Condensate drainage for air conditioning systems
Condensate drainage using a self sealing device
Note this technical solution is in addition to previously published technical solutionsrelating to split system installation and condensate drainage methods and may also beused for applications such as high efciency ducted heaters and evaporative coolers.

A self sealing device is, in effect, awaterless trap which is designed to closeafter waste discharge and prevent theadmittance of foul air into the building. It offers the advantage, in the case ofcondensate drainage, of continuing toprevent foul air entry during times oflittle or no ow when a conventionalwater trap seal may evaporate.
The device is designed for 40mmupvc pipe and can be installed in thevertical or on grade position but must
be within a building, accessible and outof direct sunlight. An adaptor tting(available from the manufacturer, orregular ttings) may be required for theupstream end of the valve to providefor the connection of 40mm pipe or atundish. (See g.1 opposite.)
Permitted locations
1(a) Via the discharge pipe beneath asink, trough or vanity basin.
A junction and device is installedby the sanitary plumberin the verticalsection of discharge pipe (50mm or40mm) below the trap seal of the xtureand the self sealing device is installed inthe vertical position as high as is practicalto the underside of the benchtop. Thedischarge pipe, device and condensatedrain must be adequately supported. Atundish is required on the top of thedevice to provide a physical air gap(20mm) in the condensate drain. (See
g. 2 opposite.)

Alternatively the drain may discharge
to the dishwasher connection point ona 50mm xture trap using appropriateexible hose and ttings providing all theconditions described in 1(a) can be met.(See g. 3 opposite.)
2. Waste or vent in a roof / ceiling space.
The condensate drainage from an airconditioning or heating appliance maybe discharged to a vent pipe via a selfsealing device located in a ceiling or roofspace. The junction and device is to be
installed by the sanitary plumberandmust be supported in accordance with AS3500. It is preferable for the device to beinstalled in the vertical position with an airgap provided over a tundish. (See g. 4opposite.)
If it is not practical to install the devicein the vertical position, it is acceptable inan on-grade position as long as a tundishincorporating an air gap is provided. (Seeg. 5 below, opposite.)
In the case of ceiling space
installations, test the system under fulloperating conditions to ensure there is nosplashing or spillage from the tundish onto the ceiling.
