Alittle bit of research revealedthat Vampires out of

Swinderby didn’t do so well inand around 1956.

On 27 July a Vampire crashed onlanding, killing the pilot. It waspossibly caused by a spanner found inthe port boom, wedging the elevatorcontrol. Three other accidentshappened the same year.

There were four incidentsinvolving the Vampire the previousyear when one pilot lost his life. whilesix Vampires were involved inincidents in 1957 with three fatalities. The Vampire was the first single-engined jet to be built with its firstflight in 1945.

While doing some clearing out recently John Burdall’s wifecame across an old newspaper cutting and he thought it might

be an interesting story for the newsletter. So did we!

It appears that on 17 September,1956 an RAF single-seater Vampirejet crashed in a field of wheat nearFosdyke Bridge and, according tothe Boston edition of theLincolnshire Standard, it ‘burst intoflames on impact, sending a pillar ofblack smoke high into the air, andthe whole machine was virtuallydestroyed before the flames wereextinguished by firemensummoned from Kirton andHolbeach.’

In her house barely one hundredyards from the crash Mrs F WBurdall was chatting to a neighbourand ran out of the house carryingher two children, Jennifer, almostthree, and John then just fifteenmonths old (pictured above right).

In the article it is claimed that thehouse was full of smoke from the

close call in ‘56

crash when John’s father arrivedhome not long afterwards, havingseen the plane plummet out of thesky.

The pilot had ejected and landedsafely in a field about half a mileaway with a small cut on his face, and waited to be picked up at Mr HJ Lineham’s house.

It could have been a tragic storybut luckily for John - and us ofcourse - we have John Burdall’sBody Repair Service on ourdoorsteps, and he helps to keep ourlocal ale houses in business, bothworthy causes, in our opinion!

Our heartfelt condolences to thefamilies of those who passedaway recently:

Farewell to thee!but not farewell

To all my fondestthoughts of thee:

Within my heartthey still shall dwell;

And they shall cheerand comfort me

Did anyone manage to putnames to all the faces?

For those interested in the recent launch of Plonk - an anthology ofshort stories from Spalding-based Red Wine Writers which features

five stories from Fosdyke’s own Terry Martin - it was a huge successwith over eighty people turning up to buy a signed copy. Bookmarksnapped up a box-full of signed copies and may still have some instock.

We’d be interested to hear from the man who came up to the tableat the end and said he was also a Fosdyke-based writer. What withChris Davison from the Moorings Cafe, Fosdyke is a veritable hive ofliterary talent!

Communityshop update

Just over ten percent ofhouseholds in Fosdyke

responded to the CommunityShop questionnaire that waspublished in the November andDecember editions of FosdykeNewsletter.

Many thanks to the twenty-seven households that took part inthe survey to see how viable acommunity shop would be. We hadquestionnaires posted through ourletter box, handed to us and alsoscanned and sent via email. Thechoice was yours, so long as wereceived them

The Plunkett Foundation, whichadvises and supports communityventures, recommends that for aproject of this nature to besuccessful at least thirty percent ofresidents need to be in favour of avillage shop. It would appear thatthe majority of residents are quitehappy with travelling outside of thevillage to buy and top up theirweekly shopping.

That’s not to say a communityshop wouldn’t work. I’m sure manyof the people who didn’t bother toanswer the questionnaire wouldtake advantage of one if it evermaterialised.

If the four families prepared tobe on the steering group would stilllike to pursue the matter please letTerry know on 260275 [email protected].

If you have any oldphotos or cuttingfrom newspaperswe would love toshare them with therest of the residents.See Copy Deadlineon Page 10 for con-tact details.

Cool downSeedlings don't have to stay as

warm as germinating seeds. Movethem away from heat as soon theyhave germinated.

Feed themIf you’re using a soilless mix

without compost, begin to fertilizeyour seedlings as soon as they gettheir first true leaves. (These leavesemerge after the little, roundcotyledon leaves.) Water with ahalf-strength solution of liquidfish/seaweed fertilizer every weekor two. Use either a spray bottle oradd the fertilizer to the water youset the trays in if you're using thewick-up method described above.

Give them roomIf the seedlings outgrow their

containers or crowd one another, repot them into larger containersfilled with a mix that includescompost. Extract the seedlings witha narrow fork or flat stick, andhandle by their leaves and roots toavoid damaging the fragile stems.Tuck the seedlings gently into thenew pots, and water them to settlethe roots.

Pet themLightly ruffling seedlings once or

twice a day with your hand or apiece of cardboard helps them togrow stocky and strong.

Toughen them upAbout one week before the

plants are to go outside, startacclimating them to the harshconditions of the outside world.Gardeners call this hardening off.On a warm spring day move thecontainers to a shaded, protectedplace, such as a porch, for a fewhours. Each day—unless theweather is horrible—graduallyincrease the plants exposure to sunand breeze. At the end of the weekleave them out overnight; thentransplant them into the garden.

3

compost to your mix to give them ahealthy beginning.

Moisten your medium in thecontainers before sowing the seeds.Next, drop seeds onto the surfaceof the mix, spacing them as evenlyas possible. Cover the seeds to adepth about three times thethickness of the seeds. Some seeds, such as ageratum, alyssum, impatiens, petunias, and

snapdragons, should notbe covered at all

because theyneed light inorder togerminate.

Lightlysprinkle

milledsphagnum

moss, a naturalfungicide, over

everything to protectagainst damping-off, a

fungal disease that rotsseeds and seedlings. In the

case of seeds that need light togerminate, sprinkle the moss firstand then drop the seeds onto themoss.

Keep seeds dampand cosy

Cover the trays with plastic wrapor glass to keep them humid andplace them near a source of heat. Most seeds germinate well at warmroom temperature. Mist with aspray bottle or set the trays intowater so the mix wicks up themoisture from below.

Lighten upAt the first signs of sprouting,

uncover and move the containersto a bright spot—a sunny window,a greenhouse, or beneath a coupleof ordinary fluorescent shop lights.

Some plants lend themselves tohome germination better thanothers. Surefire vegetables includebasil, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, chives, leeks, lettuce, onions, peppers, andtomatoes. Some reliable annualflowers are alyssum, cosmos, marigolds, and zinnias. Perennialsinclude Shasta daisies, columbines, and hollyhocks.

Re-use last year's plant trays ifyou have some around.Otherwise, any container2 or 3 inches deepwill do. Punchholes for drainageinto the bottomof containersand set theminto trays.Protect againstplant disease bythoroughlycleaning all usedcontainers: Washthem in hot, soapy water, and rinse with a dilute solution ofhousehold bleach and water. If youwant a less-irritating substitute forthe bleach, use distilled whitevinegar.

You can buy bags of seed-startermix or you can make your ownseed-starting mix by blending equalparts of perlite, vermiculite, andpeat. Add 1/4 teaspoon of lime toeach gallon of mix to neutralize theacidity of the peat. You'll eventuallywant to repot most of yourseedlings into larger containersbefore setting them into the garden. But lettuce, melons, andcucumbers are a bit fussy aboutbeing transplanted and should godirectly from the original containersinto the garden. When startingthese fussier plants, always add

This time of year there’s not a lot to do outside. I will issue myannual warning not to start cutting the grass too early in the

year. But you can start seeds of lettuce, celery, onions, leeks, andearly tomatoes indoors under lights.

The National Association ofLocal Councils is intent on

lobbying government to giveparish councils more (or shouldthat read “some”) power overwhat happens in the community.

If they succeed then it’simperative that our representativeson the parish council are doing thevery best for the village. Being aparish councillor must be quitefrustrating when good intentionsare blocked by higher authoritiesthat aren’t privy to the needs ofsmaller communities.

This year, 2015, will see parishcouncil elections across the countryand Fosdyke is no different. If youare interested in becoming a parishcouncillor then you will need tosubmit your nomination papersbetween March 24 and 4pm onApril 9.

To be a town or parishcouncillor you must be...

• a British citizen, or a citizen ofthe Commonwealth or theEuropean Union, and

• eighteen years or older on theday you become nominated forelection

• for the whole of the 12 monthsprior to nomination you must

~ • have been an elector of theparish and either occupied orowned/rented premises in theparish, or

In reply to matters arising: It’s truethat Terry Martin was asked to

attend, not summoned to ameeting, but some of our readerschose to use a more dramatic term, which is their right. As stated inprevious issues Fosdyke Newslettercan have as many as eightcontributors (excluding readers’letters). So, we’re no different than‘a lot of villages’. It’s only recentlythat Fosdyke Parish Council hasstarted supplying the newsletterwith minutes of their meetings.

For several years I was an avidbird feeder spending tens of

pounds a month on a variety ofseeds to attract as many types ofbirds as possible to our garden. This policy in the main workedwith fairly large numbers of agood mix of finches, tits, sparrows, blackbirds and thelike. Whilst I do appreciate thata lot of people inthe village do thesame thing andquite rightly gain alot of pleasurefrom this pastime,i have slowlychanged myattitude and nolonger extensivelyfeed the local birds.

Apart from themounting cost it wasnoticed that although we wereattracting for want of a better termthe nice little birds we were alsoexpanding the beasts and bullies ofthe bird fraternity i.e. Woodpigeon’s, Collared Doves , andstarlings.

I do have some sympathy for theStarlings as their numbers seem tobe in decline but I do find theirattitude is not conducive to a happygarden community. The Pigeon’sand Collared Doves on the other

hand are a different matter. Wenoticed a steady rise in the numberof these birds on fences trees andelectrical wires around the house tothe point that on one day withoutmoving from one spot in the frontgarden we were able to count 93Collared Doves. It was clear to usthat our policy of providing a goodvariety of seeds for the birds ingeneral may be causing a real

problem.We knew thatour nearneighbours were

also putting outfeed for the birdsso after thewinter two yearsago we ceasedputting out birdfeed to see whatwould be the

result. There was a distinct reduction in

the bird numbers as you wouldexpect but the variety of visitingbirds has remained constant. Thisof course could be due to the factthat our neighbours are still feedingthe birds. For us the main result hasbeen the significant reduction in theCollared Dove numbers to thepoint that this year we appear to bedown to around six pairs, with oneor two pairs of pigeon’s

Whether our actions proveanything remains to be seen.

RSPB BIRD WATCHOver the years I have taken part

in the RSPB bird watch wherebyyou note down the number of andbreeds of birds you see over alimited period on a specifiedweekend in January. I have oftenfound this somewhat frustrating inthat birds species that you know areabout never seem to appear at thetime you set to carry out yourwatch. To ease this frustration Ipropose to list here the breeds ofbirds I have seen from my gardenover the last 12 months. If othershave seen birds I have not listed Iwould be interested to know.

So that the list is not to long Ihave omitted to include the usualsuspects such as blackbirds. Tits.Finches, robins etc. which are ingood supply at present.

Gold crests, two adults andjuvenile; Cetti’s warbler; Greatspotted woodpeckers; Greenwoodpecker; Herons ; Lapwings;Barn Owls; Moorhen; Quail;Kestrel’s; Sparrow Hawks;Buzzards; Little Egret; PiedWagtails; Song thrushes; Jays;Jackdaw; Sky larks; Grey lagGeese(in field next door); fieldfare;Dunnocks and Golden Oriole (seentwice around Oldershaw’s yard) andfinally a red kite on two occasionsthis past month whilst driving onthe A1 just south of Peterborough .

to feed or not to feedthat is the question

When asked if we could knowhow much the parish

council’s Clerk earns we were toldthis would have to be looked into. The detail will be available at theparish council’s AGM, due soon, but unfortunately last year’s AGMminutes are no longer available andBoston Library claim they havenever received them.

After a great performance on10 January Fosdyke lost in

the cruellest of fashions. Athome to Sutterton they wereheading for a well earned 1-1draw that would probably havebeen a fair result but a late, latewinner saw them go down 2-1.

no drawfosdyke FC

The game started very evenlyand remained that way to the veryend. The tactics Fosdyke set outwith were working well as every

player did their bit to frustrate theirguests and create chances at theother end.

The back four kept the Suttertonforward line quiet and on the oddoccasion when they breachedFosdyke’s defensive line DavidScott was on hand to keep themout, winning a couple of one-on-ones.

The midfield took a while tosettle, but when they did, thingslooked bright. Zac Chapman waslooking a threat on the left wingand linked up well with DeclanWilson a couple of times. It wasthrough this combination thatFosdyke took the lead when Zacswung a cross in that eluded

everyone and ended up in the net. Reaching half time one up

Fosdyke were confident that theycould repeat the successes of thefirst half in the second forty-five butearly on a clever bit of play in theSutterton midfield was finished offby their striker and the score waslevel.

The remainder of the half saw atight and hard-fought affair thatlooked like it would end all squareuntil disaster struck with only fourminutes left on the clock. Failure toclear the ball gifted a visiting wingerthe chance to roll the ball in to thepath of the forward who rolled ithome to condemn Fosdyke todefeat. A bitter pill to swallow.

new year success at clubIf you stayed at home New

Year’s Eve because there wasnothing to do or you couldn’t bebothered to get a cab then ashort walk to the Social Clubwould have proved a wisemove.

With free live music (where elsewould you get that on New Year’sEve?) the shrewdest amongst ourresidents, and not just a few fromoutside Fosdyke, made the evening(and the early morning) possibly themost successful event of its kind atthe club to date.

Phatt Knappii started theproceedings with some low keysongs from their repertoire to see ifit was what the audience wantedbut when Brian McDonald fromBoston took the microphone hewound up the volume and theevening never looked back. His mixof popular songs and bigpersonality had the club rocking.

Kiya Brown also did a short setbefore McDonald was back on witha makeshift band made up ofRichie Shaw from Boston and PhattKnappii’s own guitarist TerryMartin.

There was lots of audienceparticipation and merriment as theevening progressed!

Phatt Knappii’s Liz Martin checking Brian McDonaldscredentials. She said she needed a bigger mirror!

This month the church beginsthe season of Lent –

traditionally a time of reflectionand prayer when we reflect onour life as followers of Jesus..

During Lent the story of Johnthe Baptist will be read in ourchurches. John is a fascinatingcharacter who risked being mockednot only for his eccentric dress andhis bizarre taste in food (locusts andwild honey – but also for thecontroversial things he said, callingpeople to repentance. To ‘repent’ isto turn away, to change directionand do things differently.

John called his hearers to turnaway from the mistakes of the pastand to re-orientate life in theChristian way. That is the samevocation to which God, throughJesus and his church, calls us today.

As you know, the diocese hasbegun a Year of Discipleship, running through 2015, and I’mexcited about the signs of growthand renewal in our churches whichI hope will flow from this initiative. One of the things which set Johnthe Baptist apart was that he wasprepared to talk about things thatmatter – what it is to lead a holy life, how to reflect on our experience

through a spiritual lens, how to talkabout God, and so on.

I want all of us to be able to talkfreely about our faith. My hope andprayer is that the Year ofDiscipleship will increase ourconfidence about doing that, andhelp us to find the words to sharethe love of God with those we meetin our daily lives, for our faith to beexpressed in lives of discipleshipand service, enabling us to make areal difference to the life of ourcommunities.

What’s Art Ninja? Well, it’s anew sit-com CBBC series

which started on Saturday 17January and runs for ten weeks.

If you remember Jamie Oliver’sNaked Chef and enjoyed the formatand like art you might want to giveit a look. It’s presented by Ricky

Martin from Bristol, and featuresfriends and family. His father isplayed by ... his dad, Terry Martin, who lives in Fosdyke.

He appears in two episodes, sixand eight, we think, but if yourchildren are into art it’s well worthwatching every episode. You canfind a trailer on YouTube (searchfor CBBC: Art Ninja) or iPlayer themost recent shows. The firstepisode featured an amazinghuman skate board animation! A(not very flattering) photo of LizMartin, Ricky’s mum, also appearsin the show - next to the telephone, but an actress is used for voiceovers. We’d be interested to knowwhat you think.
