St. Mary’s Church of England Primary Academy
Fortnightly Newsletter
Friday 28th April 2017
We hope you all had a lovely half term break and enjoyed the sunshine while it lasted. It seems the weather has taken a nose dive and we have gone back a few seasons!
Collective Worship Today in Collective Worship we said our goodbyes to Lyanne Young who has been with St Mary’s for 13 years. We wish her all the best for the future and she promises she won’t be a stranger, so look out for her when she visits. We also introduced our new value for this term which is ‘Hope’. Good News We are pleased to announce that Mrs Millan has shared with us some exciting news. She is ex-pecting her first child which is due in November. I am sure you will join us in wishing her well and sending her congratulations.
IMMERSION DAY AT ST MARYS
EYFS
In Early Years our new theme is ‘Spring’ which was chosen by the children. We started the week off having a Spring
walk and looking for signs of spring and finished the week by having some little visitors into Early Years. Thank you
Meadow and Mrs Bannard!
Year 1
The Year 1 pupils were immersed into a world of castles! This term we are learning about William the Conqueror, the
Battle of Hastings and Rockingham Castle. The children would like to share their thoughts on our new theme so far.
"I liked making flags for our castle and painting our portcullis."
"We learned about jousting. It is when the knights go on horses and they try to push each other off their horses with
their poles."
"I liked dabbing the paint onto the walls of our castle."
"I found out the ramparts are where the knights stand to protect the castle and so they can see who is coming!"
"I liked making swords out of cardboard. I drew it first then cut it out carefully."
"I enjoyed reading the castle book and we saw them shooting arrows through the holes in the walls."
"I liked colouring the horses in the knights."
Year 2
We had a brilliant time on immersion day finding out more about Ancient Egyptians. We looked at hiero-
glyphics and used this to write our own names and decode messages. We also had a look at Egyptian Death
masks and created our own masks. During the afternoon, we created Egyptian tablets where we used
our learning about hieroglyphics to write a message within clay. Finally, the children explored the famous
pyramids and created sandpaper art work. The children had an exciting day and are looking forward to find-
ing out more about the Ancient Egyptians.
IMMERSION DAY CONTINUED
Year 3/4’s
Year 3/4 had an exciting first day back. There had been reported sightings in the local area of a mysterious crea-
ture. Steve, from the Education Group, captured the animal and brought it in to show us. It was a dinosaur! The
whole year group had a great time meeting the dinosaur and learning about fossils and the possibility that dinosaurs
could come back. At the end of the day, we met a baby dinosaur. Please check out our class blogs to read the news re-
ports we wrote.
Year 5— Review by Ruby Duggan
For our immersion day this term we learned about the outbreak of World War Two and how it affected children in
Great Britain. We found out about air raids and how it would feel when the loud screaming air raid siren went off to
warn you German bombers were coming. Even in Burton at our school they had an air raid shelter so they would be
safe from bombs and bomb debris. We made our own gas masks and boxes from card and used them to act out what
happened when the air raid siren went off all those years ago! It was fun but quite scary at the same time!
Year 6
Year 6 will start their new theme after SATS.
E-Safety Information – April 1 2017
Are there any tools to help me support my child online?
Filtering options can be found within websites and services themselves, for example on YouTube or 'safe search'
settings can be applied to search engines such as Google or Bing. There are even some search services designed for
children (such as Yahoo! Kids). Parental controls can be password protected, so it’s advisable to choose a strong pass-
word and not share it. Parental controls and filters are a good starting point but it is important to recognise that they
are not 100% effective. They are a great help, but not a solution, and work best in combination with parental supervi-
sion and engagement, to help your children understand how to stay safe online. As children grow and develop, so do
their online needs, therefore you may want to periodically review your parental controls to accommodate this.
Remember stay SMART online!

E Safety Parents Session
Please find attached to the newsletter a poster regarding the above event which is taking place in the school
hall on Friday 19th May 9.30am to 10am.
We look forward to seeing you all there.
Worry Teddies
Look at these amazing creations!
These adorable teddies have a zipped mouth for children to ‘swallow’ written worries and keep them under control!
Do you have any unwanted balls of wool that you would like to donate to school, so that we can make lots more of these teddies?
Or, can you knit and would you like to help us make some teddies?
Please speak to the Pastoral Team (Mel Barron, Carol Lipscomb or Emma Campbell) know if you can help in any way.
Thank you!

SPORTS AT ST MARYS

Our sports days have now been arranged for the dates below. We would love to see as many parents, grandparents,
carers, aunties and uncles etc to come along and support the children. It will be a similar format to last year with tradi-
tional races based on agility, balance and coordination. The children have been practicing for this in their PE sessions
and will be racing against other children with the same ability to make it fairer. We will also be celebrating other quali-
ties such as passion, self belief, respect, teamwork and honesty. You can arrive at the Latimer Close gate where a sign-
ing in sheet will be in operation from 1.15pm. We look forward to seeing you all there.

KS1 CAREER DAY
On Friday 23rd June we will be holding a KS1 Careers event. The children have decided they would like to know more
about career opportunities for when they are older. We would really like your help and support with this. If you
would be willing to give us some time on this day to talk to the KS1 children about your career, Mrs Reynolds will be
really grateful to hear from you. Please can you contact or email the office on [email protected] to express your
interest and a rough outline of your career.
Year 2 Trip to The Space Centre
Last half term Year 2 visited The National Space Centre as part of their 'Explorers' Connector theme. The children had a
fantastic time learning all about space and what it takes to be an astronaut. They explored the many interactive hands
on galleries, watched a show in the 360 degree planetarium, took part in solving puzzles and experienced the Rocket
Tower. The children were really enthusiastic throughout the whole day and enjoyed taking part in the activities. Thank
you to all the adults who helped to make the day a success.

THE TALENTED CHILDREN OF ST MARYS
On the last day of the Easter Holidays, Ella Pither, Yr 5, took part in a pantomime at The Castle Theatre, Wellingbor-
ough.
It just so happened to be her 10th birthday and what a way to spend it!
She attended a '2 day workshop', the weekend before the performance, which she thoroughly enjoyed and made some
new friends.
She was very good on stage as a villager and made her family very proud.
Well done Ella we are all very proud of you!
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR GOVERNORS
We thought it would be nice to introduce you to our Governors. Today is the turn of Mr Currall.
Hi, my name is John Currall and as you are probably aware I work at St Marys CE Primary Academy as a Lunchtime
Supervisor and I also open up the gates for all of the parents at the end of the day. I am a man of many talents and I
am not sure if you are also aware but I am also a Governor at the school. I first became a Parent Governor back in
2013 and today I am now a Community Governor.
You may be asking “What does a Governor do?”
Please see attached to this newsletter a breakdown of what a Governor does.
For me being a Governor is an honour and a very rewarding one at that. I take my role very seriously. Both of my
children have attended St Marys and it is a very special school.
If anyone would like to discuss possibly becoming a governor in the future please do not hesitate to come and talk to
me.
