Composer NotesWhen asked to write a hymn for the rededication of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Odessa, Texas, I immediately turned to the James Quinn treasure trove (see Hymns for All Seasons, OCP edition 30132863) and found this “sending forth” text. What drew me to these words was the wide variety of occasions for which this text would be appropriate: Christ the King, priesthood, Church, mission, Christ as Servant-King, Word of God, and many more.

This piece was originally written in a larger concertato setting, complete with extended instrumental introduction and a broadened, re-orchestrated fifth verse. For this edition, the instrumentation has been condensed and interludes shortened, but we have kept the option of broadening the final verse (see the asterisk in the score).

The piece should always be sung and played with joy, confidence, and determination, reflecting how we are to go out into the world for and with Christ.

—Luke Rosen

Textwriter NotesThis recessional hymn [text] speaks of the life of the Christian as king, priest, and prophet. It is in effect a poetic commentary on Chapter IV of the Constitution on the Church (Vatican II), esp. on the nn. 34–36.

The last stanza is on the theme of the Church as “the sacrament of unity for the whole human race” (cf. Chapter I of the Constitution, n. 1).

—James Quinn, SJ
