senior English Classes

Planning Guide Folder):

● Naviance helps students research colleges and careers
● Naviance allows the College Office (as well as teachers and
guidance counselors) to know the colleges the student is
applying to, so that the following documents may be sent to
them electronically:
(1) High School Transcript
(2) Secondary School Report
(3) Counselor Letter of Recommendation
(4) Teacher Letters of Recommendation
**Naviance is NOT a college application. Students need to
apply using the CUNY, SUNY, Common Application, etc.
College Application Process
Step 1: Read the College Planning Guide
Step 2: Complete “Student Questionnaire” on Naviance
(if requesting a counselor letter)
Step 3: Enter all colleges to which you are applying in the
“colleges I’m applying to” section on Naviance
Step 4: If necessary, request Letters of Recommendation
from teacher(s)
Step 5: Start your online applications
(CUNY, Common App, SUNY, others)
College Application Process
Step 6: Send your ACT/SAT scores to all your colleges
Step 7: Fill out the FAFSA, TAP, & CSS Profile (if applicable)
Step 8: Print out and bring the following documents to the
College Office on or before your designated date:
○ FHHS Transcript Request Form (white)
○ “colleges I’m applying to” page from Naviance
Step 9: Submit your college applications online
Step 10: Check your e-mail and postal mail for your decisions
○ The following must be completed by all seniors who have submitted a college application:
1) Transcript Request Form
2) List of colleges that you’re applying to on Naviance
○ Seniors will print these out, attach them together, and bring them to the College Office on or before their Designated Date during Document Collection Week, November 13 - 21.

Building a College List
○ Students at Fort Hamilton H.S. generally apply to:○ Up to 6 CUNY colleges
○ 5-15 additional colleges (SUNY, Private, and Out-of-State colleges/universities)
○ Use the tools on Naviance to determine both admissibility and fit
○ Student’s final college list should be balanced academically and financially
○ Include Reach, Target, and Safety schools
○ Include Financial Safety

College Application Fees
○ Colleges will not review a student’s application until
he/she pays the application fee or has a fee waiver approved
○ To be eligible for an application fee waiver, students must receive free or reduced lunch. Online lunch forms can be completed at:
www.applyforlunch.com
○ CUNY fee waivers will be distributed starting October 29th
○ Common App fee Waivers: Once the student has requested a fee
waiver on Naviance, the College Office will verify the student’s
lunch eligibility and approve/submit the fee waiver.
SAT & ACT Exams
○ Many 4-year colleges require either ACT or SAT scores
○ Last time to take either exam is December
○ You are responsible to send your scores electronically
through the SAT/ACT websites
○ Class of 2018 ACT National Average Scores:

After the above deadline dates have passed, the Naviance Student system will be TURNED OFF and students will no longer be able to add colleges onto the system. Any changes/additions require special permission from the College Office.
