Much of this instruction goes on at senior centers - of course, I mean senior citizen, not 12 th grade. Since I’ve never been much of a dancer, I had to wonder if, at this age, I’d be able to keep up and remember the steps. But I gained confidence from my inspiring ninety-year-old instructor and I remembered: I WAS A CHEERLEADER! Back in the day, I successfully performed routines in front of crowds. I can do this! Now, I’ll admit I’m not great and some days my feet are a bit sluggish but I’m meeting lovely people, having a lot of fun and getting a little better each week. Thinking about being a cheerleader in 1973 made me realize that as president of the Alumni Association, I’m still a cheerleader for the school. All FHHSAA members are on this virtual squad, aren’t we? But even though the current students appreciate our support, we can always cheer a little louder. If you want your voice heard, simply remember to keep your membership current and consider upgrading to gold or silver lifetime status where your name will be enshrined on our plaque outside the school library. Spreading the word to other proud grads that they’re welcome to join the Alumni Association also helps us grow stronger and louder. A Message from the FHHSAA President

Dear Alumni Association Members,

45 years after graduating high school, I decided to start taking tap lessons (as well as some salsa and country line dancing classes.) Much of this instruction goes on at senior centers - of course, I mean senior citizen, not 12th grade.

FORT HAMILTON HIGH SCHOOL Celebrating 75 years of “Excellence in Education.”

August, 2019

Dear Alumni:

Greetings from the Fort. We hope that 2019 has been a good year for everyone. Following is some information of interest about SY2018-19 and items to look forward to in SY2019-20.

We are proud to further strengthen our performing arts program by adding a second theatre teacher who will provide new expertise and support to our drama academy. The third drama academy class from cohort 2023 will join us in September, and we have wonderful productions ahead. The Joffrey Ballet Academy continues to ‘wow’ audiences and gain larger audiences (watch for announcements to THE NUTCRACKER SUITE in December, 2019) and the instrumental and vocal programs prepare students to perform at the highest level while building a lifelong love for music.

In late June we hosted a successful graduation at the Coney Island Amphitheater for the Class of 2019. Senator Andrew Gounardes ’03, a standout graduate of FHHS, was the keynote speaker and encouraged grads to give back to their community. The majority of graduates have a post-secondary plan and many will make good use of scholarships to prestigious schools such as Yale, MIT, and others. With increased staff assistance, students had more time and support in school to conduct career exploration and complete college applications. A full year of Fort Shadowing, an initiative launched in spring 2018, provided nearly 500 seniors (50%) with one or more opportunities to “shadow” a profession/ business. Over 90 partners spanning the fields of medicine, finance, education, broadcasting, law enforcement and more, hosted seniors for a career experience. The program will continue in SY2019-20 with even greater support from a dedicated career counselor who will join the College and Career Office supporting students with post-secondary plans.

Our athletic program thrives at Fort Hamilton HS, and our staff and facility support every team, season after season. The pool renovation finished in November 2018 after a lengthy closure for both FHHS and the community. The track and field renovation begun in spring 2018 lasted throughout SY2018-19, and all teams practiced and hosted home games elsewhere. Fortunately this didn’t deter our girls’ lacrosse team from winning the city championship!!! As of August 5, 2019, the School Construction Authority turned the new track and field back to the community, and we look forward to having our teams take the home field later this month.

The external work on our roof and parapet wraps the school in scaffolding well into 2020, and we invested in air conditioning for our library and quick print center to improve the quality of study in these heavily used spaces. We work hard to maximize our space, 192% over capacity with almost 4,600 students, and utilize all funds to benefit students.

We stand firm in our commitment to provide students a safe and secure environment that prepares them for college and career.

Respectfully,

Kaye Houlihan

Let’s hear from our members! Send your news to [email protected]

Sally Frishberg is a Holocaust survivor who taught at Ft. Hamilton from 1958 to 1991. She continues to educate youth, lecturing and working to make the world a better place by sharing her story and promoting empathy and tolerance. On May 30, she was honored with an award at the Tour For Tolerance’s program, An Evening of Remembrance. The FHHS Tiger Battalion Junior ROTC Color Guard led the Pledge of Allegiance at the event which was held at The Bridge.

Harry Drake ’62, a SHINE Program volunteer (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders), was featured in a November, 2018 article in Florida NewsLine: http://www.floridanewsline.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/TCL-NOV-2018-36-lo-res.pdf . Giving unbiased advice on Medicare and health insurance, has been a rewarding endeavor as he enjoys guiding others in what can be a confusing process of selecting the right plan. For more information, Harry can be reached at [email protected]

Susan Nilsen Kupsch ’73 welcomed her third granddaughter, Lena Marie Jensen on April 28.

Della Chen ’19, after enjoying the summer with her closest high school friends, will be attending classes at the University at Buffalo

Robert Dagher ’19 has continued working at the Veterans Administration Hospital where he is in the 5th year program.

Juan Carlos Franquiz II, ’19, a Joseph Graffagnino Scholarship awardee, also received the Joffrey Ballet Academy Dance Award. He will be pursuing a BFA in dance at SUNY Purchase.

Kayla Hernandez ’19 is now attending Boston College, studying psychology with a minor in leadership and management.

Ana Maria Oliynyk ’19 will be attending Macaulay at City College, pursuing a BA in earth and atmospheric sciences along with a double major in studio art, and a minor in journalism. She hopes to combine art, journalism, photography, and the environmental sciences into a strong platform of advocacy for the environment and the many issues concerning it.

Tidbits from

Dr. Alice Cury Farkouh ’57, principal of FHHS 1989-1999, just published A Different Angle to Teaching and Learning Algebra 1. It’s a compilation of motivational lessons for teachers and students. She also penned the autobiography Never Say You Can’t.

Dr. Farkouh told a New York City daily newspaper, “My passion is teaching and then carrying this to another level by helping educators convey this passion to their students.”

Alice is a past president of the FHHSAA and a former editor of the newsletter. She is a gold level lifetime member of the Association.

BY TED GENERAL

Cathy Gigante Brown '77, published her fourth novel, Better than Sisters. It’s a coming-of-age story that takes place mostly in Bay Ridge, however, names/places have been changed. The heroine’s high school, Fort Adams, is reminiscent of FHHS. Readers may recognize similarities to fellow students, teachers and locations. This book blurs the lines between women’s and young adult fiction.

Cathy is a talented editor and writer who has her own public relations firm, has written for several publications and is a life member of the FHHSAA.

Henry Stewart ’01 has a new book titled, How Bay Ridge Became Bay Ridge. It traces the history of the southwest Brooklyn community that sits on the western tip of Long Island. Henry previously authored True Crime Bay Ridge.

He is deputy editor at Opera News, a member of Brooklyn’s Community Board 10, and first vice president of the Bay Ridge Historical Society. Henry’s grandmother, Doris Hansen ’46, his father, David Stewart ’72, and his mother, Robin Johnson Stewart ’73 are also FHHS alumni.

Two Brooklyn streets have been co-named in memory of Fort Hamilton graduates: Christopher Mega ’49, at 80th Street & 10th Avenue and Larry Morrish ’63, at 101st Street & Ft. Hamilton Parkway. Mega was a former state assemblyman, state senator and judge. Morrish was a highly regarded community leader and civic activist. Both are FHHS Alumni Hall of Fame members.

OOPS Due to an editing error, the print edition and early electronic version of our previous newsletter mislabeled the Class of 1978 (as the Class of 1977) as they celebrated their 40th reunion. Online editions have been corrected. We apologize for any confusion and hope to get it right when they celebrate their 45th reunion.
