Our VisionFollowing the final closure of Wye College in 2009 much of the Campus been disused pending proposals for re-use and redevelopment
A masterplan, based on the Neighbourhood Plan, has been prepared to identify future development and take a holistic view of connectivity (ie footpaths), traffic, parking and the potential environmental impact of re-using the extensive previously developed land and buildings following the closure of the college.
formerwye college
Current masterplan
Kempe Centre• Former College Library now established as successful Wye School
• New sports hall and extension recently completed
• Playing fields. Multi Use Games area and car parking provided on 9 acre site
Main Campus Listed Buildings• Restoration plans have been established in close consultation with Historic
England and ABC Conservation Officers
• These will remove unsympathetic modern adaptations and extensions and fully restore the most historically valuable parts – removal of asbestos has recently been completed
• The future maintenance costs and longevity of the buildings will be assured through the residential use
• Public access will be created to the most historically important elements including the Jacobean staircase where the Ancient Briton Statues will be permanently re-instated the Old Hall, Chapel and courtyards
• A new Heritage Centre situated on the High Street frontage will be made available at a peppercorn rent to preserve the archives and provide public access to learn about the history of the buildings
Ancient Briton Statues
High Street (Wolfson Lecture Theatre)• Planning permission has now been granted for
conversion of the existing historic buildings
• The modern single storey Lecture Theatre building is to be replaced by a sympathetically designed new house
• The portacabin in the car park will be replaced by 2 mews houses
• The existing permitted footpath through the site is to be retained for continued public use
Occupation Road• A number of small business continue to operate or have
been established south of Occupation Road
• WyeBugs have relocated from the North of Occupation Road to unused premises to the south
• The former BCP Certis glasshouses are now a thriving operation producing a range of organic vegetables
Progress so far
What’s next?
ADAS • The former Government Buildings complex
to the north of the campus has been cleared of accessible asbestos and the extensive glasshouse research buildings made safe
• Sadly it has become a magnet for anti-social behaviour requiring dog patrols - the existing buildings have been vandalised, and are unsightly in their present condition
• Planning has now been submitted for demolition of the existing buildings/remediation of the site and construction of 20 homes
• The new homes will significantly reduce the amount of built form, compared to the existing, and proposals have been carefully designed to reduce and enhance the visual impact
Occupation Rd • The proposed masterplan
envisages improving the visual impact from the Pilgrims Way as it approaches Wye
• A planning application for 40 new homes has been submitted on the former WyeBugs site which reduces the amount of built development below that of the existing buildings
• Proposals envisage redirecting cars where possible through the new development and away from Occupation Road
• Scheme will enable extensive soft landscaping adjoining the northern boundary of Occupation Road providing a soft transition as the path enters the village
