Former hospice volunteer now gets the care she gave For Eileen Hobbs, hospice care means enjoying the breeze from her back porch, swapping stories with visitors, and time for crossword puzzles. Eileen, 89, became a patient of Coastal Hospice over a year ago, after spending more than two decades volunteering for the organization. “Volunteering with hospice has been a labor of love,” Eileen said. “Now it’s reversed. . . I’m not used to being waited on. I took care of so many people when I volunteered.” When asked how she got involved with Coastal Hospice, Eileen said she heard about it during one of her night classes. When her husband came home from work at night, she would take time for herself to learn new skills and subjects to fill her love of learning. One night someone from hospice spoke to a class and took down everyone’s names and phone numbers, she said. “The next thing I know they called me to volunteer . . . I don’t know that I had a choice,” Eileen said with a smile. “The first

patient I visited was a man who lived by himself, but wanted someone to come in the mornings to cook him scrapple. So that’s just what I did.” The mission of Coastal Hospice is to pro-vide dignity and quality of life to all who have Continued on Page 4

We have exciting news to share about the Stansell House After a little over a year of construction and renovations, we have received the certificate of occupancy for the Macky and Pam Stansell House of Coastal Hospice. Our Worcester County-based staff moved in March 5th and are now settling in to their new workspace. Several committees and volunteers have conducted meetings and trainings in the community room. Most im-portantly, we anticipate welcoming our first patients to the Stansell House in May. The project has been a labor of love for the Board of Directors, Steering Committee, Building Committee, and all those involved. The project saw some directional and struc-tural changes along the way, but with the expertise of our contractor, Whiting-Turner, and other top-notch professionals, the Stansell House will soon open its doors. Thanks to the generous fundraising and support from our community and donors like you, we have raised over 80% of the necessary

funds toward the project. We are now just putting finish-ing touches on the house, completing décor and furnish-ings. The donor wall is up, and patient rooms are being stocked and supplied. We are elated to have the honor of opening the first ever hospice residence on the Lower Shore — for patients who cannot live independently, because they either have no one to care for them at home or their caregiver may be frail themselves. At the Stansell House, patients will have 24-hour care provided by medication technicians as well as a specialized team of doctors, nurses, aides, social work-ers and counselors to offer the physical, emotional and spiritual needs that come with the end of life. They will be safe. They will be loved. Our home will be their home. If you haven’t seen the building, we invite you to ride by the next time you’re in the area. Go into the south entrance of Ocean Pines, turn right at the 4-way stop, and drive all the way to the end of the road to The Point development. The building is at the very end of the road. We know you will appreciate the waterfront view of the bay and the serene natural setting that our patients will soon experience.

Q What resources are available to help caregivers?A Caring for a loved one when they are sick is hard work. With it comes a lot of emotions. Some of these emotions are positive — love, connection, gratitude. Others may be negative — guilt, resentment, fear. All of these feelings are a natural and normal part of being a caregiver. They are also a reason to reach out for help when a loved one is ill. Getting help caring for your loved one embraces and increases the positive emotions and reduces the negative ones. There are many examples of how hospice care helps families do this in the last stage of their loved ones’ lives. For example, having a nurse come to your home and teach you how to care for your loved one can improve your confidence in caregiving and minimize frustration and anxiety. Letting a hospice aide bathe your loved one throughout the week and assist with light housekeeping reduces your workload, giving you back time and energy. Social workers can help family member communicate with one another about their needs so that other family members can fully grasp the situation and pitch in. They can even make suggestions that involve family members who are out of town so that everyone can be involved. For example, a long-distance loved one can arrange for meals to be delivered by family friends. Social workers, hospice chaplains and grief counselors are trained to help you cope with the emotions related to serious illness and impending loss. They can help you express and, when possible, resolve them in healthy ways that will reduce the emotion’s intensity. Coastal Hospice often communicates regularly with long-distance caregivers, updating them on their loved one’s health and making suggestions on how to best support their loved one and local members of the family. This helps reduce the anxiety of not being able to be physically present and allows long-distance caregivers to take an active role in their loved ones’ care. And when all of it becomes overwhelming, respite care may be available at the Coastal Hospice at the Lake inpatient facility. These are all only a few examples of how Coastal Hospice can help families enjoy their role as caregiver more and reduce the negative feelings that may also go along with it.

Welcome to our new 2019 Board of Directors

Coastal Hospice is pleased to welcome the organization’s new board of directors for 2019, including two new members. Stephen R. Farrow, formerly the board’s vice chair, assumes the chair position from immedi-ate past chair, Michael P. Dunn. Michael E. Shrader is now vice chair; Richard M. Laws is treasurer; and Byron Braniff is secretary. New members of the board include Parisa Gholamvand and Andy Kim, both of Salis-bury. Gholamvand is a residential and com-mercial real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage while Kim is a Certified Public Accountant and the principal at Kim & Associates, PA. They join returning board members Colleen “Cam” Bunting, David “Buddy” Dykes, Roger L. Harrell, Madalaine Leszcz How, Barbara C. Long, Wiltssy Payero, Robert M. Purcell, An-thony S. Sarbanes, and Margaret M. Whitten.

Parisa Gholamvand Andy Kim Nancy Stewart, access department manager of Coastal Hospice, was recently recog-nized as a “Hospice Champion” by the Hospice Veteran-Partnership of Maryland for her dedication to the We Honor Veterans Program. We Honor Veterans Program is a hospice service that increases access and improves the quality of care for veterans in the community. Together, the Department of Veter-ans Affairs and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization developed the program to empower hospices to meet the unique needs of veterans and their families. Coastal Hospice was recently designated as a Level 4, the highest level of partnership. “I am extremely honored and proud to receive this recognition on behalf of Coastal Hospice,” Stewart said. “We are so fortunate on the Lower Shore to have such a generous community who understands the importance and special needs of veterans at the end of life. I am able to grow this important program through the dedication of our volunteers.” Because of Stewart’s commitment to the program, approximately 17-18 percent of Coastal Hospice patients enjoy We Honor Veterans ceremonies. That’s approximately 80 percent of all veterans served by Coastal Hospice. “Nancy almost single-handedly drove the implementation of the We Honor Veterans Program at Coastal Hospice,” said Coastal Hospice President Alane Capen. This is the first year the Maryland coalition has held a Hospice Champion Awards ceremony. The recognition celebrates individuals from hospices who inspire compassion, caring and leadership within the organization. Hospice-Veteran Partnerships are coali-tions of the Department of Veterans Affairs facilities, community hospices, state hospice organizations and others working together to ensure that excellent care at the end of life is available for our nation’s veterans and their families.

Although based in Salisbury, Coastal Hospice has a long history of serving the residents of Dorchester County through a dedicated team of healthcare professionals and volunteers. The organization increased its presence in Dorchester with a new office location in Cambridge. Located at 216 Dorchester Ave., the office serves as a central hub for a team of nurses, social workers, aides, spiritual coun-selors and bereavement counselors that serve Dorchester County. Coastal Hospice officially became the sole hospice provider in Dorchester County in 1997 and serves an average of 130 patients a year in the area. The Dorchester Coastal Hospice Team has thrived thus far, in large part, thanks to a passionate team of local volunteers. These volunteers make an important impact by visiting with patients and their families in their own homes or at a facility, and offer the support they need by running errands, providing companionship, fixing lunch, or giving caregivers a much-needed break. The new Cambridge office provides a much-needed central meeting space for the Dorchester volunteer network, while also allowing the medical teams more time to focus on serving patients and the community. “Striving to enhance service has driven us to improve our pres-

Over 50 attendees joined the Coastal Hospice staff including Cambridge Mayor Victoria Jackson-Stanley who addressed the crowd and welcomed the orga-nization to Cambridge. The Dorchester Volunteers also attended the event in full-force to show their support for Coastal Hospice.

life limiting illness. Eileen exemplified the mission in her work as a hospice volunteer. Before she knew it Coastal Hospice called her regularly to visit two to three patients a week. Over the years, Eileen has made many friendships with staff, volunteers and patients of Coastal Hospice. When her nurse switched to a different team, the nurse and team took Eileen out to lunch to make it a happy occasion. Just the other day she got a call from her original volunteer coordinator, Heather Nann, who

stays in touch every few weeks because their friendship grew over the past 22 years. “She said that I’m the only one whose phone number she remembers because she called it so often,” Eileen said. As her body moves through aging and nears end of life, Eileen enjoys telling stories of her days with hospice as a volunteer. She is also letting go of small possessions and tokens to those who can appreciate them after she is gone. She is grateful for her new nurse who helped recently her find the right home for a special ring from her mother. Eileen’s grandfather ran a farm for nuns of Saint Gertrude Academy in Caroline County in exchange for her daughter, Eileen’s mother, to attend the school. Her mother kept her school ring and passed it down to Eileen. “I thought they would be interested in the ring because it is 100 years old. . . I’m trying to give away the little things that will mean something to others,” Eileen said. Eileen’s nurse helped her contact the school to tell them about the ring. Last week, nuns from the academy visited Eileen and gave her fresh flowers from their campus in exchange for the ring. While life is a journey and the end of life is its own special process, some things never change and for Eileen, that means not having her picture taken. “The volunteer coordinator always took pictures, but she knew not to take my picture. She would say don’t take Eileen’s picture. I don’t want to make her mad because she volunteers to see so many patients,” Eileen said, laughing. “They always called me. . . I loved it.” And now, she enjoys her visits with her own volunteer.

At Coastal Hospice, our social workers provide family counseling, advanced care planning, and connec-tion to the resources patients, families, and caregivers may need to make their journey easier and more comfortable.
