It is truly an honor to serve and to work with the dedicated people on our Section Board, the Committee Chairs who have been doing such a great job, and our Section Staff that holds it all together and makes it run so well. I welcome comments and ideas as it is your Section. Call me or write me if I can help answer a question, solve a problem, or just lend an ear to a friend.

Remember, the PGA offers us opportunities to succeed. It is up to each and everyone of us to utilize those programs that can help our own situation.

By Dan Hill, PGA

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Well, I have been President of our great Section for almost 6 months (18 to go) and I know a few things that I didn’t before.

8Never start a Section Meeting early.8Never start roll call at a Section Meeting by pointing to the new guy in the crowd and asking him to start.8Always introduce the Board.8The Western Montana Chapter is a long way from Seatac Airport.8It is really cool to host a Section event at your Club. (My members enjoyed it.)8Never ride with Jeffery Bobby thorough Snoqualmie Pass.

We begin the 2009 season with high hopes and with planning already started for 2010. The Board realizes the challenges ahead of us and we have begun to make changes to our programs and events that will make them work better for every Section Member no matter what Chapter they live in. Our Tournament Task force brought ideas to the Board that triggered new thought for the 2010 Tournament Schedule. You will hear more in my next article about where that is going.

We have formed an Audit Committee that will review our accounting practices and procedures at both the Chapter and Section level to make sure we are ready for an outside audit of any kind. The Audit Committee will recommend a schedule for conducting periodic professional audits of our business so we can plan and budget for them.

I urge you to take advantage of the great education opportunities that we have and thank Scott Smith for putting together a great program at the Great Wolf Lodge. A great getaway for the family and a way to improve your resume at the same time. You will love the 82 degrees inside the water park and the Howlin’ Tornado. Thanks to the Education Chairs, Scott Smith, Michael Marion, and Andy

It is requested that Members complete all Section, class, employment, address, phone, fax and email changes by close of business (5 pm ET) Thursday, April 23, 2009. This will allow time for Membership to review and apply the changes on Friday morning. PGA Headquarters will start the preliminary processing at noon on Friday April 24th.

The FY2009/2010 annual dues invoices will be created in processing that takes place on Saturday, April 25, 2009. This covers the period from July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010. Members and apprentices who have an email address on file will be notified via email that the invoices are available through the Home Page of PGALinks.com. No hard copy printed invoices are being mailed to individuals who have an email address. These individuals should log onto PGALinks.com to print, view and/or pay online. The invoice can be printed and submitted to their employer for payment. Hard copy printed invoices will be mailed through the US Postal Service to only those without an email address.

Dues are payable by June 30, 2009 to avoid suspension and late fees.

Welcome to the new online version of ForeWord Press. The goals of this move to the electronic age are to deliver you more timely content, enhance our sponsors return and to provide as efficient an operation for you as possible. Let us know what you think.

I want to say thank you to everyone who sent a thank you letter, email or note to a sponsor last year. As I walked the aisles at the PGA Merchandise Show, it really made a difference when I spoke to a National Sales Manager who was the recipient of 50 thank you notes. Times are a little challenging on the sponsorship front, your efforts made a difference! We are very fortunate to receive the support we do, the relationships you have with your reps and the recognition you show to their bosses are the key to our success.

This year has started off well with our sponsors. Sterling Savings Bank is in the second year of a three year commitment and we could not have a better partner. Not only have they been great to work with as our banker, they support three of our championships and they will be contributing over $30,000 to charity and $39,000 to YOU. How’s that for commitment to the PGA professional? Please support Sterling Savings Bank.

Be sure to review the sponsor page in this issue. We welcome a few new sponsors this year, retain most of our current sponsors and have lost just a few. New this year, Kelly Carsh will bring Ahead to the Oregon Open, Ken Allen has convinced ClubGlove and Mobile ProShop to support the Washington Open. Thanks to Matt Elmes, adidas/ashworth golf is still with us at the Washington Open. We are also working with Todd Ostrem to bring him onto the team. The golf industry is hanging in

there during these challenging times. Please support the sponsors who are going the extra mile this year.

Participation is the key to our success. Whether it is our excellent education programs, our championships, our meetings or our destination pro-ams – you make YOUR programs successful. Pick your spots and jump in with both feet. If you are really limited consider these options: 1) host a McGladrey Team Championship qualifier at your course. You will make a few bucks, bring your members to a nice event and just might end up at Pinehurst. 2) Enter the Section PGA Professional Championship, Senior PGA Professional Championship or Assistant Professional Championship. If you can only play in one championship – these are the ones. They are your championships! Ron Hass and Brian Kruhlak will welcome you to Avalon, Bill Tindall is looking forward to showing you Tumble Creek and Doug Hixson will welcome the Assistants back to site where many passed their PAT! All will be great venues. Playing and teaching separate us, so PLAY.

On the operational front we continue to cut costs. Your Board has seen the numbers of how much has been cut over the last five years. It’s amazing what your staff accomplishes as we’ve been lean and mean for a while now. We pledge to continue to purchase tools not toys, keep staff as efficient as possible with what you ask us to do, and always deliver the quality you demand. We will do it right, or not do it!

On behalf of your staff, thank you for your support and friendship. Please give me a call if you ever have a question, suggestion or concern.

Marti O’Neill and Josh Immordino, from Riverbend GC captured the title of Bushnell Pro-Assistant Champions after 39 holes of the popular four-ball format. The dynamic duo scored two strong rounds of 66-68 for a 134 total that tied with two other teams to force a playoff. Meridian Valley CC, with Greg Manley and Dusty Brett and the team of Village Greens GC, with Ryan Malby and Jess Roper joined O’Neill and Immordino for a three-hole playoff that concluded with

a dramatic putt sunk by O’Neill.

The first round started with a 12:00 shotgun start at Broadmoor Golf Club. With 52 strong teams, including defending champions Steve Prugh and son Corey Prugh of Manito G&CC and past champions Mike Gove and Eric Berry of Inglewood GC (2003 & 2004) there were many fantastic golf shots to be made.

Marti O’Neill, Head PGA Professional

and his Assistant Josh Immordino, immediately grabbed the lead after posting a first round score of 66. With fourteen teams within three strokes of the lead, the championship was still up for grabs. O’Neill and Immordino started the second round off with a bang when they eagled the first hole. The rest of the round, the duo posted birdies followed by bogeys to finish their round and forcing the playoff. Forty-five minutes later, and three holes later, Marti O’Neill and Josh Immordino emerged with the victory and title of Bushnell Pro’Assistant Champions. Congratulations for hard earned victory!

Thanks to Broadmoor GC for hosting, to all the teams that participated and to all of the PGA professionals that attended our Pacific Northwest PGA Section Spring General Meeting on Monday night. Special thanks also to Bushnell, Bolle’ and Serengeti for their sponsorships and Rep. Sally Schmitz for being on site both days. Thank you all for your support!

Perhaps at no other time has it been more critical for PGA Professionals to step up and meet the challenges of the day. With facilities of all types under more financial stress than ever, operators are looking for two things. First, they are looking to maximize rounds and revenues and second, they are looking for ways to cut expenses.

We all want PGA Professionals to be regarded as someone who is best trained and best positioned to positively impact financial bottom lines while providing great customer service. None of us want to see that position viewed as one of the highest compensated managers whose elimination from the organization chart can be judged as a sound business decision.

We have all probably been exposed to business planning where we do a SWOT

analysis. Investigating Strengths, Weaknesses, Threats and Opportunities help us understand the current situation and make plans for the future.

Interestingly, any time there is a threat there is also an opportunity. Consider this, when the housing market was red hot, how important was it to have the best realtor? Couldn’t many sellers have gotten by with a “for sale by owner sign?” In today’s market, anyone who is trying to sell their home wants to give themselves every chance of success so they seek out the highest performing realtor possible.

The analogy holds true in our industry as well. When membership is full or the corporate outings are booked months ahead it was a matter of taking care of the operation and providing great customer service. At this moment, the PGA Professional who can not, or chooses not to adapt to this new reality is at risk. The Head Professional or Director of Golf who embraces the challenge and is perceived to be part of the solution has an opportunity to put his or her training and experience to work to the benefit of the facility and their career.

Most employers are seeking the highest and best combination of people, game, and business skills in their PGA Professional. On a recent PGA Employer Council Conference Call it was observed that the PGA Professional needs to be the Manager / Marketer / Golf Professional and must be willing to “vault into the shoes of the person who has the bottom line pressure.”

The good news is that many PGA Professionals possess these skills to some extent. The better news is that PGA Professionals who want to upgrade any of these areas can improve their skills through training, professional development, and mentoring from fellow PGA Professionals. The best news is that once you clearly understand the skills employers seek and implement a plan to maximize your skills in those areas your value increases.

All of that validates the PGA of America’s description of PGA Professionals as “The experts in the game and business of golf.” One could look at the current environment as an opportunity for PGA Professionals to utilize their expertise, show their value and lead.

Finally, as you go forward this season I wish you much success and if I be of assistance in any way, please do not hesitate to call.

If you have not registered your facility to host a Local Qualifying Event in The McGladrey Team Championship, you can do so today at PGA.com/teamchampionship. By hosting an event, you will earn four MSR hours, $10 for each amateur who registers and participates in your event and the opportunity to play in your Section Team Championship for a combined purse of $13,000 up to $30,000.

The McGladrey Team Championship

The Pacific Northwest Section PGA tournament season got under way on February 23rd with the opening event of the year at The Oregon GC and Tualatin CC. The Spring Shoot-Out had a strong field of our section professionals ready to compete and show how they managed to keep up their games during the long winter. The tournament began at The Oregon Golf Club with the popular Scramble

format to jump start the tournament season. The team of Greg Manley (Meridian Valley CC) and Derek Siesser (Overlake G&CC), shot a blistering 11-under-par 61 to take a one stroke lead after carding a 29 on the front nine. One stroke behind the leaders were Cameron Fife (Persimmon CC) and Randy Potter (Wenatchee G&CC).

The final round started at Tualatin Country Club with a 9:00 am shotgun in the exciting Four-Ball format. The competition was close but Greg Manley and Derek Siesser were able to walk away with the top prize and the title of 2009 Spring Shoot-Out Champions. Scott Leritz (Royal Oaks CC) and partner Scott Erdmann (Oswego Lake CC), Cameron Fife and partner Randy Potter, and Sean Arey (Trysting Tree GC) and partner Ryan Gilmour (Corvallis CC) all tied for second two strokes back of the winners.

The Pacific Northwest Section PGA would like to thank Bob Turnquist and The Oregon Golf Club and Sean Fredrickson and Tualatin Country Club and their respective staffs for hosting our event this year and all the professionals that made this event a success.

The PGA of America annually hosts an operations survey to help provide its member professionals with key statistics and benchmarking tools relative to golf facility operations. Subsequent data is used to support state and national economic impact studies for the golf industry and demonstrate that golf’s direct impact represents a multi-billion dollar industry.

The 2009 Annual Operations Survey is available as of March under the PGA PerformanceTrak menu on PGALinks.com to the highest ranking PGA Professional at each facility, or to any member with proxy rights through PerformanceTrak. Informationgathered through this service is strictly confidential to the individual facility’s management team and is presented in aggregate with other facilities for reporting purposes.

As with PerformanceTrak, these reports provide the ability to easily review results by region, facility type and number of holes. Reports allow facility operators to compare their top-line revenues and expenses against other “like” facilities. If you would like to be set up as a proxy on behalf of your facility, work with your highest ranking professional to gain access.

Thank you to all the teams that participated in this year’s Holcomb-In-One Las Vegas Pro-Am. We had 19 teams that joined us for a fun filled week in beautiful sunny Las Vegas playing Bali Hai GC, Siena GC and the new PGA Golf Club – Coyote Springs. The players all were able to enjoy the three great tracks with weather the last two days in the mid-70’s.

Congratulations to PGA Professional Mike Gove’s team with amateurs Jeff Wilson, Eric Knapp, Josh Kechloian and Dan Murphy! They won the team title by 21 strokes over the team of PGA Professional Jeff Mehlert with amateurs Greg Hartman, Mike Ingham, Bob Mathews and Steve Barker.

Congrats to Mike Gove of Inglewood GC for winning the professional division and beating the rest of the professional field by three points. Low amateur gross stableford results go to Bjorn Bjorke of McCormick Woods GC who won by six points over Jeff Wilson of Inglewood GC. Amateur Eric Blitz of Fircrest GC slattered the amateur net field by ten points in the stableford competition over Bob Mathews of McCormick Woods GC.

Grant and Bob Holcomb along with Tony Smith of Antigua, Ed Kowachek of Sun Mountain Sports, Jason Seeman of Bushnell and Roger Landry of Imperial Headwear all sponsored this event making it our best year yet. Each participant in the event received an Antigua golf shirt, Antigua mock shirt, Antigua golf shirt, Sun Mountain Sports rain flex vest, golf glove, hat from Imperial Headwear while Bushnell provided the closest to the pin prizes for all of the par 3’s during the three day event.

Thank you Grant and Bob Holcomb for another great year. For those of you that have yet to experience the Holcomb-In-One Las Vegas Pro-Am, get your team together early for next years event!

This featured article is to clarify the posting of MSR credits for Section golf tournaments. Please take time to read the details thoroughly and completely.

Through June 15, 2008, two (2) Section approved golf events per cycle year (to a maximum of 4 MSR credits per cycle year) were allowed and they were posted as M10 (first event) and M11 (second event).

Section Events - Effective June 16, 2008, MSR credits for Section approved golf events was changed. The new rule allows participation in all approved Section golf tournaments or tournaments conducted by the PGA of America National Office to be worthy of PDP/MSR credits as defined by the Membership Committee. As a result, only one MSR code was needed and M10 was chosen.

Therefore, the M11 Activity Code is no longer valid. Do Not Use M11!! Please review your tournament schedule and advise if there are any Section Tournaments that were set up with Default Education Credits as M11 that have a play date of June 16, 2008 to current date and/or have a Credit Type other than PDP. It will be necessary to make a correcting entry prior to the posting of the Default Education Credits to reflect activity code M10. And, on a going-forward basis, please use only activity code M10 for

approved Section golf tournaments.

National Events - Effective March 2009, for events that are set up by and conducted by the National Office, the Membership Department will also set up the Default Education Credits prior to the event being opened for registration.

These events include:

2009 Professional National Championship

2009 National Assistants Championship

2009 National Senior Professional National Championship

2009 Section Professional Championship

2009 Section Assistants Professional Championship

2009 Section Senior Professional Championship

At the conclusion of each event, the Membership Department will contact each Section to determine who did not show / did not play, etc. Once the attendance roster has been finalized, the National Office will post the MSR credits; this in an attempt to avoid duplicate postings. The Section will be advised when the MSR credits have been posted.
