I am plagued by a quote from a book I’m reading. Erwin McManus wrote, “Our future is not to be found in our preservation but in our investment.” That scares me because so much of our efforts focus on preservation. We long to preserve our youthful figure and appearance, a losing battle, to be sure. We want to preserve our wealth, our health, our intelligence, our way of life. Just name it and preservation seems to be the order of the day.
But we cannot preserve. Jesus taught this when he spoke of the transient nature of wealth in a realm where thieves steal and moths and rust destroy.
This relates to church life as well. We cannot take a snapshot of current church life and expect it to be the same, to be preserved, for the future. The world is changing. We are changing. And trying to preserve the living Body of Christ of 2017 (or any other year) for a future reality is like catching fireflies in a jar — beautiful and reminiscent of a good moment, but fleeting. Their light will flicker and fade, as will a church that is not allowed to adapt, progress, and remain alive to the moment.
The future of Forest Hills UMC is not to preserve who and what we are right now for future generations. Instead, the future of Forest Hills is to invest in the qualities and practices Jesus prized — love, truth, hope, faith, obedience, worship, prayer, fellowship, generosity, service. As we invest ourselves in these things, and as we strive to sow these in others, Forest Hills future will be secured — not preserved.

Forest Hills UMC receives many donations given in memory or in honor of loved ones. Acknowledgment of Forest Hills’ gratitude is sent to each person who makes a donation. A letter of recognition identifying who gave a donation is also sent to the person or the family of the person who was honored/remembered. Here is a list of all who have been honored and remembered through a donation to FHUMC this past month.
SKI TRIP: JANUARY 18-21The Pre-Fit for Ski Trip attendees will be held in the Youth Room from 5:30pm-6:30pm on Wednesday, January 10th.
There will be no Senior High youth the evening of the 21st, but the Junior High will meet at regular times.
Beginning on January 7th, we're asking that all youth enter and exit through the Ministry Center's rear door for Sunday night programming. Senior highers can still exit to their cars or rides through the double doors by the playground, but must enter through the Ministry Center. We're doing this in an effort to in-crease security around the building during those program hours by limiting the number of unlocked doors to one and never leaving it unsupervised. This should also make pick-up of Junior Highers a bit easier!
The staff of Forest Hills UMC thanks you for your generous financial gifts this holiday season towards the staff Christmas bonus. Your love and support mean more to us than words can express. Thank you and God bless you!
Sincerely,
Brant

HOLY LAND TRIP MEETINGSunday, January 7 at 2:00 p.m. in room 97
It’s almost time to board the plane to Israel. Before we do, let’s meet one more time to review the details of our traveling. Bring yourself, your questions and an adventurous spirit as we prepare for the journey of a lifetime together.
Thank you very much for your financial contribution ($736.80). Your gift has helped My Vision for Refugees, Inc. provide hope, education, health services, nutrition, and emotional support to former refugees and orphans of the West African civil wars. It also supported our community outreach to the poor, sick and vulnerable in the N'zerekore, Guinea, community.
Your support means the world to the children we provide for at our orphanage in Guinea, Home of Hope; and you make a difference every time you give. We are grateful and appreciate your kindness.
Sincerely, Samuel Johnson

FINANCIAL REPORT
Our two trips to help in the Atlanta Processing Center were a success, introducing 7 new participants to the joy of volunteering there during the Christmas season. Carolyn Scarborough, Susie Greene, the Sherwood family and Brenda Lambert’s sister and daughter are now experienced shoebox processors, and can tell you all about the experience! They also gained valuable insights about what to pack in shoeboxes and why it is so important to use standard size shoeboxes, either
LOAVES & FISHES OFFERINGLoaves and Fishes Ministry is the focus of our Missions offering for the month of January. It originally started in 1967 in the basement of Tattnall Square Presbyterian Church as a food and clothing ministry. It has now morphed into an organization that assists individuals and families as they transition from learned helplessness to learned resourcefulness. From their office at 651 MLK Jr. Blvd., Loaves and Fishes helps with the necessities of daily living we might expect, like food, clothing, medicine, laundry, showers, and diapers. They also help with ID’s and birth certificates. Something like a birth certificate is so simple for us, but imagine….without your birth certificate, you cannot get an ID and without an ID, you cannot get a job, you cannot cash a check, you cannot go to the doctor, you cannot get a place to live… Without an ID, you cannot be a part of modern society. If you have renewed your Driver’s license lately, you know that it involves bringing several documents to prove who you are and where you live. And don’t forget the $32 you have to pay for the new 8 year
licenses. It is quite a task even if all your documents are safely stored in a box in the closet. Now what if you didn’t have a closet? What if the only way to keep up with your birth certificate was to keep it in your wallet or your pocket? Now imagine your wallet is stolen and with it your ID, birth certificate and Social Security card. How in the world would you begin to get them all back? Especially if you have no money and no transportation. At Loaves and Fishes they help their clients navigate the difficult road back to having a valid ID that is needed for so many essential parts of being a productive member of society. Besides providing the funds needed to get a birth certificate and ID they also help them track down all the documents and applications that they need. This is the first step that many must take to get back on the road to self-sufficiency. For over 50 years Loaves and Fishes has been ministering to the people of Middle Georgia. Without help from donors and volunteers, none of this would be possible. By supporting their mission, you are taking a stand against the epidemic of homelessness in our region. cardboard or plastic. On the days we volunteered, shoeboxes in Atlanta were going to Benin, Burkina Faso, and Congo. Although we did not get to process our 360 shoeboxes, on our last trip we did get to process some awesome boxes from our neighbors at Mikado Baptist Church. Although our church efforts are finished for 2017, now is a great time to find bargains on special items to fill next year’s shoeboxes!

MINISTRY UPDATES
Forest Hills, you continue to impact our world both locally and internationally! We have heard from Rise Against Hunger regarding the 40,000 meals you packed in August. They have traveled much
farther than many of us ever will to feed people in Honduras and Swaziland. RAH went through their partner Salesian Missions, an organization that nourishes lives through food assistance and other services in Honduras. In Swaziland the meals are part of a multi-country school-feeding initiative through Adventist Development and Relief Agency. The Southern Africa region has been hit hard by the most powerful El Nino on record. This food will provide life-changing aid through region wide school-feeding programs. The expected outcomes of the initiative are to improve nutrition for school-age children, increase enrollment and attendance rates at schools and further involvement of staff, the local community and private sector in the project. You’re feeding the children at home and overseas. Thank you.
We are so grateful for our community partners. State Bank employees packed over 1,100 of our 1,545 bags of foods for Christmas break. Junior League of Macon also helped to pack Christmas bags. Our volunteers are enjoying a much needed Christmas vacation along with our school children. We will resume packing the week of January 7.
