ForemastForemast Alderbrook Golf & Yacht Club EST. 1965
February 2016
Every fourth year, time is adjusted with the mysterious appearance of February 29 showing up on the calendar. If you are one of those individuals who feel that you never get a break, this is your year. Just
think, an extra day to play golf, mow the grass, or wash dishes - it does not get any better than that.
Yes, 2016 is a leap year, and we are expecting it to be an exciting time for our association. The real estate market appears to be strengthening as demand grows. I was told that in 2015 approximately 36 real estate transactions took place within our community. Hood Canal Fine Homes (Alderbrook Properties) is currently beginning construction on two new model homes, which will be located between their sales office and the Clubhouse.
Golf rounds played in 2015 were up 16% over the previous year. Various committees are diligently working on issues such as long-range planning, com-munity activities, marketing and enhanced communi-cations. Your Board of Directors has contracted with Reid Realty to market several AGYC-owned parcels within the community. The sale of these properties would bring additional members into the association.
The Board approved a contract with ESA, an engi-neering firm, to begin an analysis of the community drainage system as well as possible future necessary enhancement.
The AGYC staff is busy planning and preparing for a very active 2016 as well as integrating an upgraded point of sale system in the Clubhouse operations. The 2016 annual membership meeting is currently scheduled for Sunday, May 15. There will be two Board positions up for reelection this year with the date of Sunday, April 17, set for a “Meet the Candi-dates” forum.
Our restaurant continues to diligently work on providing activities and events for you and your guests. Taco Tuesdays continue to stay busy, Open Mic on Wednesdays provides for a fun evening along with “TJ and Friends Presents” providing entertain-ment for the evening twice a month on Saturdays. A very special Valen-tine’s Day event is being planned on Saturday February 13, the day prior, and we are looking forward to seeing you there. These are a few of my thoughts and I look forward to hearing yours.

AGYC Board Meeting Summary
A copy of the complete Board minutes, along with all reports submitted at the meeting, can be seen online and in the Business Office.
The Board met on Monday, January 18, 2016, at 6:00 PM in the Clubhouse.
The House & Facilities committee received the Board’s approval to purchase a TV and DVD player for the meeting/exercise room, and shelving for the attic storage area.
Green Diamond is seeking approval to burn the de-bris piles on the forested lands near AGYC. The Board authorized Rick to contact the Dept. of Natural Resources to support this effort. (Following the meet-ing, it was learned that Green Diamond will not be permitted to burn and must find an alternate way of disposing of these piles of slash.)
A new Point-of-Sale system will be used by the Pro Shop and Restaurant beginning February 1. The tablet-style system will be more efficient, cost effective, and versatile. The cost will be based on the number of rounds of golf played.
The Board has agreed to list five lots held by AGYC with Reid Realty in Belfair.
The Annual Meeting date has been changed back to May 15, 2016. There were too many conflicts with the June date that was approved earlier.
Two new ad-hoc com-mittees were formed. One will address secu-rity concerns within the community and for members. The other will review lot assessments.
New chairs/barstools for the Clubhouse and bar areas are on order and should be here in about 12 weeks.
The next meeting of the Board will be Monday, February 15 at 6:00 PM in the Clubhouse.

Welcome to the merry month of Lincoln and Washington and St. Valentine. We should always remember the two great presidents, but we must remember St. Valentine, too,
because, as we all know, pitchers and catchers report that week. That’s why a new Mariners baseball cap would be a fitting gift for the dreamboat in your life. Ladies, take note!
From February 1 to opening day of Men’s Club is a mere sixty-six days. Sixty-six days to get ready for all of the fun and excitement that competition with a bunch of mostly old geezers brings. Be ready by send-ing in your dues for 2016 so you can begin posting March 1 or when you begin to play here at home. No posting, no big honey pots for you. A trifling $53.00 gives each member the opportunity to feel the thrill of victory or the agony of ‘da feet (primarily walkers).
Men’s Club Opening Day will begin with a meeting at 9:15am on April 6 with golf at 10am. The 2016 Men’s Club schedule of events will be out shortly and will be posted on the Men’s Club bulletin board. Copies will
be available at the meeting on Opening Day. Don’t forget the Brick Fund - a wonderful way to re-member someone special to you or a special occa-sion, like a hole in one. Contact Jim Sroke for details (898-0460)
The Snow King competition continues. Seems to me it should be called the Rain King, but what do I know. One thing I know is nobody played golf for better than a week when the course was covered with a mere 1-2 inch snowfall. However, the rain doesn’t stop play for the true mudder. And while it may be less than perfect to play in the rain, we CAN play. I guarantee they are not playing golf in northern Vir-ginia this week. My son spent seven hours shoveling off his short little driveway of the 30+ inches of snow.
The annual Bandon Dunes outing was recently com-pleted. Everyone had a good time even though Sun-day was a tad bit wet and windy. Thanks again to Justin for making the arrangements.
And last, for no particular reason except gratitude, thanks to all you veterans out there for your service. See you on the course.

Thank You Notes. Be sure to check the ladies bulletin board for notes sent to us from some of the recipi-ents of last year's Ladies Club Thanksgiving dinner fund raising program. The thanks they expressed are certainly an inspiration to repeat the Turkey Shoot event again next year.
Snow Queen. There's still time to sign up for this win-ter tournament. All you have to do is pay $5 in the Pro Shop and turn in at least 4 scores from the back nine gold tees. Unfortunately, February is the last month to get in your scores. Maybe next year we can figure out a way to extend the tournament into March.
2016 Schedule. The 2016 Ladies Club regular golf season starts on Tuesday, April 5. Official Opening Day festivities are on Tuesday, May 3. Our officers are putting the finishing touches on the rest of the 2016 schedule; it will be available later this month. Check the bulletin board and the Ladies Club section of the AGYC website for details.
AGYC Website. And talking about the website, we're looking for feedback on what information you would
like to see in the Ladies Club section. Check it out and give your ideas to Penny Shelton or Ginny Chitwood. Penny ([email protected]) Ginny ([email protected])
Indoor Games. No reason to stay home and twiddle your thumbs during the winter months - there are lots of fun activities to entertain us. Hand 'n Foot is on Tuesdays & Thursdays at 10am; Mahjong on Wednesdays @ 2:30pm and Mexican Train Domi-noes on Fridays @ 2pm - all at the Clubhouse. Just show up if you'd to play. Party bridge is at 10am in the Annex on Wednesdays. Check w/Billie Hendrick-son, 898-3633, if you'd like to play - groups of four are necessary for it to work.
Alderbrook Team Shirts. If you haven’t done so al-ready, get your shirt order in to Justin; order deadline is the end of February. The short-sleeved shirts are white, with an AGYC logo on the front. They’re per-fect for Putters Club, ladies golf, and anyone else who would like an Alderbrook logo shirt. Cost is $36 and samples are in the Pro Shop so you can try on your size.

AGYC Foremast February 2016
Jim and Jan Fitzgerald were familiar with the Hood Canal area and had rented cottages at the Alder-brook Inn when they looked at homes at Alderbrook in 1992. AGYC member and realtor Toni Determan showed them several houses, and they bought an early Alderbrook home on the 5th fairway on Fir Tree Lane. The house was built in 1971 by Hazel and John Worden. The Fitzgeralds bought the home in January 1993 from the Worden estate as a place to retire someday. One thing led to another, and last summer they sold their Kenmore home and moved here per-manently in August.
Unbeknownst to them, when the Fitzgeralds bought their home, they already knew three AGYC families through business or golf connections: John and De-lores Barrett through Jan’s father who worked in the forest products industry with John Barrett, Bill and Marge Shreve through a neighbor in their old neigh-borhood in Bothell, and Dick and Coyet Stimpson whose son Curtis was the chef at Bear Creek Country Club in Woodinville. For Jim and Jan, Alderbrook was truly a small world.
Over the years, the Fitzgeralds came here frequently on weekends or over the holidays. For many years, Jim’s father loved to organize Fitzgerald family reun-ions and a golf tournament and awards ceremony the third week of July. All of the family enjoyed com-ing to the reunions, which included picnics at the Wickiup. Jim’s father passed away four years ago, and, with him, the family reunions. They have or-dered a brick from the Men’s Club in his memory. Jim is still working as a regional manager in Oncology for Merck. His territory covers Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Montana and Alaska. Travel is a big part of his job, and he is on the road every week. Jim graduated from Portland State University with a degree in economics. He is a Portland native and grew up playing golf, but his work schedule has not allowed him to play as much golf as he would like. He and Jan are avid Duck fans.
Jim and Jan met in Eugene when they were in high school. Duck athletics are a big part of the happen-ings there. Jim’s brother played football for the Ducks, and Jim and Jan’s son, D.J., graduated from
the University of Oregon. Jim donates many hours to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. He has been a “Master Hunter” for eight years, has served on the Master Hunter Advisory Group as its Chairman for the past three years, has administered the master hunter test for four years and has taught hunter’s education for six years. Jim plans to work for three more years and then dedicate more time to his passions: anything involving the outdoors, fi-nance, reading and time with family.
Jan grew up in California and taught Special Educa-tion in Kenmore at the high school level for 18 years. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Jan was the chapter and West Central Regional Advisor for the Future Business Leaders of America, coached Special Olympics bowling and ran the scoreboard and clock for all the boys and girls home basketball games. She retired last year. Jan has played more golf than Jim in recent years, and she plans to play golf and get involved in AGYC activities after some decompression time.
The Fitzgeralds have two adult children, Megan and D.J., who were five and three years old when their parents bought the house in 1993. They both grew up playing golf using “Lost-and-Found” clubs that Head Pro Mike Fields cut down for them, and they eagerly looked forward to their Friday golf lessons with Mike. Megan played golf in high school and in Washington Junior Golf Association tournaments. She is married and living in Portland. D.J. plays golf left-handed and loves the game. He will start nursing school at Lake Washington Technical College in March.

House and Facilities Committee Sharon Ferguson, Chair
With the holiday’s behind us, and the weather still keeping us mostly indoors, your House and Facilities Committee has been looking at our facilities to see what needs attention this year and what the costs are to do these things. Just like at home, we need to take care of our investments and watch our spending at the same time. It’s not an easy task, but it is an important one.
It is hard to believe we have been in our Clubhouse almost seven years now. With all the use it gets and the cold, wet weather we have here in Union, this year our Clubhouse needs attention. There is dry rot to repair. The outside of the
building desperately needs painting, as do some of the inside walls. The carpeting is looking ragged and old, and has had some pretty big patch jobs the past couple of years, so it is time to replace it, as well.
It is very costly to maintain and repair the Clubhouse. The Board needs to decide whether funding for these repairs will come from the Reserve Fund, which is
where a portion of your dues go each month, or from another source. We will have to stay tuned to see what the Board decides to do.
In the meantime, the House and Facilities Com-mittee, working with the Activities Committee, is looking at planning some “movie nights” in the meeting room. In order for us to do this, the com-mittee is purchasing a new, large TV and DVD player with some of our fund-raising money. This will not only allow us to have fun movie events, but will allow us to have additional exercise classes, such as yoga and stretch classes, etc., which can be done with DVDs on the new TV. Additionally, when we have big sporting events, we will have another TV and room to enjoy watching them. Keep your eye on those email blasts for updates.
When the weather gets better, we will put our focus on the things that need to be done on the outside of our facilities, but until then, we are going to cozy up inside and enjoy our warm fireplace and beautiful views while experiencing the wonderful food delights of Chef Leon and his incredibly talented staff. Love to have you join us!
The next meeting of the House and Facilities Com-mittee is February 2 @ 3:00pm. Everyone is wel-come to attend.

Activities Committee By Mary Gin Kennedy, Co-Chair
The Activities Committee met twice in January to begin planning events for the next few months. The New Year’s Eve Gala was more expensive than antici-pated so the committee voted to hold several fund-raisers and contribute $500 from previous fundrais-ers to help reduce the shortfall.
The Hardware Distillery Tasting. AGYC members sampled a flight of spirits, or a signature cocktail, crafted by Chuck and Jan Morris, owners of The Hardware Distillery Co. in Hoodsport, at an exclusive tasting for members on January 28 at the Clubhouse. Light appetizers were provided by Chef Leon to cleanse the palate between tastings. These piquant liquors are made from water from the Hood Canal Watershed and from Washington State grains, fruits and honey. Curious about these local spirits, but unable to attend the tasting? Stop by the Distillery Tasting Room on Highway 101 in Hoodsport.

Marketing Committee By Carol Norbeck, Chair
Homes here are selling at a brisk pace The Marketing Committee worked diligently last year to promote interest in our community and will con-tinue to do so this year, anticipating that the brisk sales pace of 2015 will continue. Last year, 26 homes and at least nine lots, sold within the Alderbrook community.
The Marketing Committee’s activities in 2015 included:
Assisting in obtaining a new directional sign at the intersection of McReavy and Manzanita, and another at McReavy and Brockdale.
Working with Pete Skogstad to get a new sign at the Clubhouse entrance to direct guests to the restaurant.
Promoting Alderbrook Golf Course for the King 5 Best of Western Washington contest and win-ning second place.
Rejuvenating the Alderbrook Golf Facebook page and boosting the number of our followers to 1,000. When the beautiful promotional video made by Hood Canal Fine Homes was shared on Facebook, it reached approximately 9,000 people.
Hosting a well-attended luncheon for Realtors with properties for sale within Alderbrook. The realtors viewed the 50th Anniversary slide show to give them a better sense of the past and pre-sent of our community.
Putting a geocache at the The Pointe, which con-tinues to draw people into the community as they search for the hidden “treasure.”
Next year the Marketing Committee plans to put to-gether an informational packet for homeowners who have properties for sale that will enable them to work more effectively with their real estate agents. The committee also will continue to work on obtain-ing a new, more professional sign at the Golf Course entrance and to build more alliances within the Un-ion community. Additionally, the Marketing Com-mittee is available to help any other standing com-mittee with marketing.
The committee meets the first Wednesday of the month at 4 pm and is actively seeking additional members and/or just ideas and opinions from resi-dents who are not committee members. Working through committees is the best way to relay sugges-tions and ideas to the Board of Directors, and Board members appreciate the input from the community.
AGYC Travel Bug Update
AGYC’s “Travel Bug” (a poker chip ball marker) was part of the original geocache hidden somewhere around The Pointe by the Marketing Committee in mid-July.
Our travel bug spent most of the month of November at the 1-40 West Travel Bug Pris-on in North Carolina. It was retrieved on November 23, but has not been traced since then. It may be hibernating for the winter.
Stay tuned every month to follow the adven-tures of our travel bug whose mission is to visit golf courses all over the world.
Environment Committee By Ginny Chitwood
The Environment Committee is organizing a work party to rake up and clean up the area between the 17th green and the road. Everyone is invited - you don't have to be a member of the committee to join in on the fun. Date to be announced as soon as we get a clue from Mother Nature about when there will be an appropriate time.
There will be a short Environment Committee meeting on Monday, February 1st at 11am in the Clubhouse to discuss winter projects, spring clean-up, and tee baskets. Everyone is invited to this event, too!
Reminder: The Compost Center remains closed through February. It will reopen the 1st Monday of March (the 7th) from 10am to noon. The regular every Monday schedule will resume in April.

You may have heard “WatchTVEverywhere” advertised by Hood Canal Communications and did not give it another thought. If you are one of
those people who just have to have your programs, no matter where you are, this is something to know about.
What is it? WatchTVEverywhere has a lot of different definitions. For HCC, it is TV programs that are avail-able on something other than a TV set. That means your PC, laptop, iPad, iPhone or Android.
What is available to watch? Different networks make different programs available at different times. Each TV network makes its own decision about what to make available on WatchTVEverywhere. For example, the live feed of CNN is available. However, the live feed of Nickelodeon is not. Instead, Nickelodeon offers full episodes of their popular programs.
WatchTVEverywhere works anywhere you can re-ceive an Internet signal: inside your house, at the office, shopping mall, hotel, airport, vacation home, etc. Wired connections and in-home WiFi will provide the best quality. The quality of WatchTVEverywhere signals while roaming (airports, stores, etc.) will vary depending on the strength of the signal.
Be extra careful when you travel, especially outside the US. Data roaming charges may apply to networks that allow access outside the US, and they can be very expensive.
To use WatchTVEverywhere you need two things:
1) A Watch TV Everywhere account through HCC. Create one here: Https://www.watchtveverywhere.com/register.php You will need two pieces of information to register (have your latest invoice handy).
Your account number The correct spelling of the last name on the account
After you complete the registration, you will get an email with an activation link. You will need to click that link to complete the registration.
2) An internet device such as a phone, tablet, DVD or computer.
Once you have your account:
Visit www.WatchTVEverywhere.com. Click on Log In Enter your username and password
Select the TV Network you want to watch Click on the network and you will see a list of
the available programs
Almost all WatchTVEverywhere programs are avail- able on PC, laptop, iPad, iPhone and Android phones. Several TV Networks are also now available on Apple TV, Roku, and XBox. However, some TV networks have not made their programs available on all devic-es. Visit your device's app store and search by the network name for available applications.
For more information visit the Hood Canal Communi-cations website at www.hcc.net.
