The reconstruction of the evolutionary history of man is a topic in continuous evolution, to use a pun, as evidenced by changes in the interpretive scenari-os that sometimes attain the discovery of new fossils. The book is dedicated to those recoveries that in the histo-ry of paleoanthropological research have sort of been "milestones":ie fossils. They have not found an easy acceptance in the scientific environ-ment, due to the disruption of consol-idated and widely shared ideas that they embodied, and the messages that they carried with them. Fossils"against the tide", then, but also ideas "against the tide" born by men with insights and stubborn de-termination that have marked the his-tory of the discipline. In the various chapters the reader will find outlined in popular form and following a histor-ical record, the scientific and cultural context in which the various fossils came to light, the difficulties they en-countered before they received credit and, in the final part, readers will be offered an overview of the state of current knowledge.Starting from the discovery of the Ne-anderthal man and ending with that of the Hobbit, a singular small hominid whose remains were found recently in Indonesia, the volume is to cover a

The AuThorVincenzo Formicola has a degree in Biological Sciences and has been teaching and researchingin anthropol-ogy at the University of Pisa from the early '70s. His academic career began at the Institute of Anthropology and Human Paleontology, was completed in 2010 at the Department of Biolo-gy. During this time his research was pointed towards the study of the pop-ulations of Europe by modern humans during the Upper Palaeolithic, and the analysis of aspects of biology, culture and behavior of the last populations of hunters and of the first European farmers. The results of this activity are several scientific publications which appeared in prestigious international journals, promotion and participation in excavations of sites of archaeologi-cal interest, and invitations to interna-tional symposia. Included among the most relevant scientific contributions are works on the calculation of stature starting from ancient skeletal remains , the evolution of stature in European

prehistory, mortuary behavior of early modern humans and the relationship between economics, lifestyle and state of health in the populations of the past.Currently he is involved in populariz-ing science through the organization of conferences for the general public and the drafting of museum guides in the sections dealing with the Natural History of Man.

The book guides the individual pas-sionate about archeology, the curious traveler, but also the college student or professional archaeologist, on a fascinating journey to discover the most ancient prehistory of modern Turkey. Despite the rigor of the scien-tific data, the book is in fact conceived as a story and a real guide that can provide both a general introduction to the historical and cultural aspects of the prehistory of the Anatolian penin-sula, and a framework of each archae-ological sites and museums that have returned and retain traces of human cultures which have been developed between the Lower Paleolithic and the end of the Neolithic eras.

As there is currently no archaeological Italian / Turkishdictionary, this appendix of the book will be useful for students not only in their professional activity.

The authorAndrea De Pascale is archaeologist, Curator of the Archaeological Muse-um of Finale (Finale Ligure Borgo - SV). He graduated in Conservation of Cultural Heritage (archeology) at the University of Genoa, receiving from the same university a PhD in Histor-ical Sciences. He carries out several research projects in Italy and in Tur-key, in which he deals with prehisto-ry and proto-history, environmental archeology, archeology of artificial cavities, and history of archaeological research. His participation in national and international scientific meetings through reporting is intense, in addi-tion to holding conferences, seminars and lectures at cultural institutes and schools of all levels. He pays particu-lar attention to the divulgation of sci-ence, curating events for the Science Festival of Genoa and writing articles for magazines like Archeo, Middle

Ages and The Art Newspaper. He is an Honorary Inspector of the Minis-try of Heritage and Culture, a mem-ber of the Research Center of Genoa Underground cavities, and of the Na-tional Commission of the Italian Spe-leological Society, as well as a deputy representative of the International In-stitute of Ligurian Studies at the Italian Institute of Prehistory and Early His-tory. He is also the co-researcher of four volumes, and author of over 100 articles about monographs, confer-ence proceedings, Italian and foreign journals.

The AuThorOttorinoTosti was born in 1950 in Genoa. In 1973 he began to devote himself to spe-leology, an activity that he practices to this day by researching and exploring caves in the limestone mountains of the Maritime Alps and the Apuan Alps. In the late 1990s he became interested in caves located in glaciers, an interest that led him to discover the interiors of the biggest known glaciers in the Alps. In 2008 he arrives in Eastern Greenland for the first time, where he pro-vides a platform for speleology research in the glaciers of Angmagssalik, which should be the first of their kind conduct-ed by Italians in this remote area of the planet. In 2009 he travels to the northern Andes in search of the remains of the Inca civilisation, which reached their period of greatest splendour and wealth in this re-gion. Of these two worlds he appreciates

the natural and primitive environments, but particularly the simple and genuine in-habitants. This consequently establishes within him the desire to help populations that live in difficult conditions and that are losing their original culture due to the pressure placed upon them by the West-ern world. In 2008, upon his return from his first trip to Greenland, he creates the “project ItaliAmmassalik”, with the inten-tion of promoting knowledge about this forgotten Arctic world and create a bridge between their world and ours. The project becomes an association (www.italiam-massalik.it) in 2009 once it reaches a size that can no longer be managed by a sin-gle person. Since 2008 he has made three other trips to Angmagssalik and has come to gain a good knowledge of the place, its history, and its traditions. He continues his explorations of the underground worlds. He coordinates the association he initially promoted, as President and, through con-ferences and exhibitions, he disseminates knowledge of the Inuit of Angmagssalik.

He therefore ob-serves and writes down, bordering on obessiveness. After that - it is stronger than him - likes to recount to whomev-er comes within range, even by email. He is sixty-two years old, and sixty years ago he might have been able to become Brazilian if his father had decided to continue teaching in Reci-fe, where they went when he was a baby. Much later, for professional rea-sons, he lived in Japan and China, as well as in Kyrgyzstan and Syria. From 2010 to 2014 he was based in Skopje. The shift away from fragmented sto-ries meant for a small circle of listen-ers and readers, to a more structured, real guide aimed at a wider audience, was short.

THE AUTHORSSilvia Maraone was born in Milan in 1975, along with her twin. She en-counters Bosnia in 1993, after her family accommodates a boy and a girl from Mostar for several months. Having just turned eighteen she be-gins to do volunteer work in the refu-gee camps in Slovenia. Today she is a cooperating project leader in Bihac, with the NGO ICEI. She has taught Serbian-Croatian-Bosnian and holds classes on urbicide and divided cities for students taking urban sociology courses at the Cattolica and the Po-litecnico.Anna Scavuzzo, born in 1976 in Mi-lan, is part of a family that betrays an Italic hybridization, from Liguria to Sic-ily, with some stops in Calabria. She approaches Bosnia in 1992. For years she watches what happens beyond the borders, participating in fundrais-ers for materials, scholarships, and work groups. Meanwhile she grows and lives in the world scout of AGES-CI and has different educational expe-

riences and volunteer service. In 2002 she sets foot in Sarajevo for the first time as a scout with Project Saraje-vo, and since then she continuously returns. With her scout uniform, but not only.With a degree in physics, she has taught for young and older students with great satisfaction and enjoyment, at least on her part. She is currently holding, in a confident manner, the position of city councilor in Milan. As one of the women of the orange revo-lution she is committed to preventing it from fading away.

A research path that has been open since the 1970s from historic ecology of European origin has developed a specific historical approach inspired by the local or topographical histori-cal experiences to problems of envi-ronmental and cultural conservation. This historical approach has rare-ly been adopted in the countries of southern Europe due to the choice of local history that has essentially be-come foreign to historical-geographic continental research, and also due to the managerial and political problems that emerge as a result. The "nature" of the mountain is ex-plored in this volume from different points of view. Grouping together geographers, historians, archaeolo-gists and naturalists has generated a collection of essays organized into three parts: methodological discus-sions, research as teaching, a choice of sites of historical and environmen-tal interest of the Ligurian and eastern areas of the Piedmont plain. Meetings and clashes emerge as frameworks for research and teaching activities of groups of students belonging to the University of Genoa, Eastern Pied-mont, Nottingham and Toulouse.For years, the practice of research has been proposed as a didactic moment experimenting with different discipli-nary approaches, tools and methods of local history and historical ecolo-gy. For the first time we have a book that tackles without preconditions the is-sue of the role played bythe bless-ed Don Gnocchi during the years of resistance. A period of Italy’s histo-ry whichis in many ways heroic, but also controversial. Those were years in which the greatest minds of the country and the most generous hearts paved the way, sometimes paying with their lives, for a better Italy that inspired one of the most modern con-stitutions in the West.Certainly among these were resistant Catholics, who spent their lives to restore freedom, dignity and a sense of the state to the citizens that had been oppressed and humiliated by a brutal dictatorship. It would be enough to simply remember the “white” partisans of the OSCAR network, the organization Visconti di Modrone, the Green Flames, and the police that remained loyal to the legit-imate government, among whom the activities of the resistant Don Carlo Gnocchi, "rebel for love", were carried out that cost him an arrest and prison in San Vittore by the German SS. His anti-fascism was undeclared and not exhibited, rather it lived as the scope of testimony in the name of evangelic

humanism and the Christian faith. An anti-fascist experience as a spiritual direction and free of any ideology, created from the idea of living in a priesthood that was not separated but attentive to the social and institution-al affairs of its people. This valuable book does justice to many contra-dictory judgments, expressed often without adequate knowledge of this delicate but important period in the life of Don Carlo Gnocchi, which instead has been the premise for the creation of the Work of charity that today bears his name.

The AuThorDaniele Corbetta (Inverigo 1943) studied with Mario Apollonio, Gi-useppe Billanovich, Emanuele Sev-erino, Sante Graciotti. He has dealt with the twentieth century and Slavic studies, writing on Italo Svevo and the Russians, Clemente Rebora, Piero-Jahier. He has taught Literature in the training colleges of Lecco and Erba and in the commercial technical insti-tute of Erba. He is a member of the Istituto di Storia Contemporanea P.A Perretta, Como, of the national net-work INSMLI, for which he has coor-

The eastern border can be considered as a space in which, for centuries, there has been an intertwining and overlapping of multiple borders of po-litical, cultural, religious, and eventu-ally, of a national, nature. As a part of the Adriatic and in essence the outset between the Italian peninsula and the Balkans, this place is not only physical but also a gap between Western and Eastern Europe in the general sense. Just as a fracture surface, the eastern border remains certainly a character-istic crux in the history of Italy. Geo-graphically located from the shores of the river Isonzo to the watershed of the eastern Alps, it holds the Karst region (Trieste and Gorizia) and the Istrian peninsula until the Fiume and the Dalmatian coast, with its achipel-ago of islands up to Cattaro. In exact harmony with border contrasts which occurred in Europe between the sec-ond half of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century, the history of the Italian eastern border continues as an emblematic attempt to fix within a region, diverse and heterogeneous peoples for events and a hegemonic frontier.with limited variation since it has always been fixed on ideological terms of perpetually difficult demarca-tion.In a more general historiographic pan-orama on the issue, the book aims to establish itself as an accessible tool to a non-specialist public interested

From the peace of Campoformio to ferment ir-redentists of the late nineteenth cen-tury, from the claims that followed the Great War to the fascist policies and the Istrian exodus, there is an explo-ration of the international diplomatic scene with its implications - before and after - the Second World War to follow the evolution of contention for defining borders (thanks to a num-ber of Italian and foreign references).The author considers the many en-dogenous and exogenous aspects in constant action in the affected area, going back to the most recent, after the crisis of Yugoslavia, and exam-ining the relations with the European Union, the inter-state cooperation and cultural policy in place between Italy, Slovenia and Croatia.

The authorGiorgio Federico Siboni (1979) graduated cum laude in History of the Age of Enlightenment (2003), the Eu-ropean Master's Degree and Title Ad-vanced Studies in History of legal and political institutions (2004), PhD in Eu-ropean Society (2009), and is a grad-uated archivist-palaeographer (2009) . He cooperates with the University of Milan (Department of Archive). He is the Senior editor of the quarterly "Coordinamento Adriatico", and the director of the international magazine "Nueva Illustracién."

He is vice president of the Associazi-one Magna Carta Verona -Scipione Maffei, coordinator diliMes Club Vero-na (old quarter), and ordinary member of the Societa Storica Lombarda. He performs the role of commissioner for the scientific national project Genesis and changes in structures of territorial power in the Adriatic, as well as the role of delegate at the Miur-Gruppo on the history of the north-east Adriatic exiles. His research focuses mainly on the eighteenth century and the rev-olutionary and Napoleonic age.

THE DIRECTOR’S BATON

The authorNelida Milani Kruljac was born in Pula (Istria) in 1939. She served for years as deputy head and head of the Italian section at the Faculty of Arts in Pula. For a decade (1989-1999) she served as editor of the quarterly cultural magazine La Battana, com-ing out for the Edit Fiume publishing house.In 1991 Sellerio publishes her work Una valigia di cartone (Mondello prize 1992). The collection of short stories L’ovo slosso-Trulo jaje, published in Zagred for Durieux (1996), proposes some of her most significant accounts along with the translation into Croa-tian. In 1998 the publisher Frassinelli publishes Bora, which Milani co-au-thored with Anna Maria Mori, a jour-nalist for “La Repubblica”. In 2006 a collection of short sto-ries Nezamjetne prolaznosti (Subtle steps) is released in the series “Istria attraverso i secoli”. In 2007 the pub-lishing house Edit of Fiume publishes her Crinale estremo, a collection of short stories, and in 2008 Racconti di Guerra comes out in the series “Pas-saggi de II Ramo d’Oro di Trieste”. Milani has published books, essays and articles with a sociolinguistic character, focusing her interests on

the learning of a second language, as well as on issues relating to cul-tural identities, with interdisciplinary research on languages and cultures in the multiethnic society of Istria. In 2004 she was appointed with Order of Merit “star of solidarity”, by the Presi-dent of the Italian Republic Carlo Aze-glio Ciampi.

The critic Sergio Pent wrote that Die-go Zandel is "a writer who knows how to renew certain tendencies of the so called border literature, but with long strides into an international dimension that is still not common in Italy"

That this is so is also demonstrated by the seven stories gathered here, whose referencesare realities of dif-ferent geopolitical contexts - the Pal-estinian / Israeli relationship in "Il fratello", Greece's post-colonels in "La vendetta", Ceausescu's Romania in "The Romanian consul", the Medi-terranean in "Duca Lamberti in croci-era" - while, even if set in Italy, other stories deal with those borders that cross our consciousness, in a strong-ly noir dimension as in "In Memoriam" and "Traguardo di sangue", with the only exception being the surprising "Hot Pink ".The stories gathered here were writ-ten at different times and, therefore, are different in the motivations that inspired them as well as the contexts. They are proof that when a writer has a strong character, he always find in the materials he uses an underlying unity that constitutes his personal nar-rative figure.

THE ROMANIAN CONSUL

The authorDiego Zandel was born in the Ser-vigliano refugee camp in 1948 by parents from Rijeka. He is the author of the novels Massacro per un presi-dente (Knopf, 1981), Una storia Istria-na (Rusconi, 1987 Finalist at Naples award 1987), Crociera di sangue (Knopf, 1993), Operazione Venere (Knopf, 1996), I confini dell'odio (Arag-no, 2002), L'Uomo di Kos (Hobby & Work, 2004), Il fratello greco ( HACC, 2010), I testimoni muti (Mursia, 2011), Essere Bob Lang (HACCA, 2012). To-gether with Giacomo Scotti he wrote Invito alla lettura di Andrić (Mursia, 1981). His stories appear in several anthologies. They are translated in Greece and Croatia.

For years now publishing has sen-tenced to death (along with theater) the most noble, the most fascinating and the oldest form of human ex-pression: the narrative. Ever since man has had speech, he has felt the need to tell: the verbal story is man-kind’s first form of literature. The sto-ries, passed down by word of mouth, have built a memory, a wisdom, a vision, an enchantment. captured, was operating a charm an-nulling time and space. Giacomo Scotti is a writer of the Ital-ian minority in Istria and Rijeka. He has become, since he is not, a na-tive writer, like Nelida Milani or Laura Marchig, just to mention the names of two authors published by our pub-lishing house. In Italy he is particular-ly known for his history books, some debated, others illuminating an other-wise unknown reality. That year he re-established his res-idence in Italy, first in his hometown and then in Trieste where commuted between Italy and Croatia, weaving intense cultural relations. Among his works, in addition to great poems and essays, we have to mention "Raccon-ti di una vita" published in 2001 for LINT, Trieste, and the latest volume "Racconti fra due mondi"edited by Edit, Rijeka, in 2013 picking the best of Scotti's fiction of the last fifty years. Emerging among the several volumes of stories for the young are "Favole e leggende dell'Istria", "Favole e leg-gende del mar adriatico" (Santi Quar-anta, Treviso) "La grotta del vento" (Erri De Luca's preface) published in Naples, and "Dalla terra al Cielo" edit-ed by Asterios, Trieste in 2006. Among the most recent and popular works of Scotti itthe autobiographical novel “Per caso e per passione”deserves to be mentioned, edited in 2012 by Lint, the same publishing house of Scotti’s famous Scotti volumes:"GoliOtok", "ri-tornoall’Isola Calva" (expanded into four editions) and" Lager in mezzo al mare" which have revealed one of the lesser-known tragedies of the war: the one that, along with the tens of thou-sands of Yugoslav anti-Stalinist com-munist, involved several hundreds of Italians in Istria, Kvarner, in Friuli and Trieste between 1948 and 1956.Thanks to his literary production, to

the credits obtained for divulging the Italian literature in the former You-goslavia and in other cultural fields, Scotti has been given several awards in Italy and abroad. The most recent ones include the international awards “Scritture di frontiera Umberto Saba” (Trieste, 2004), the “Calabria” in 2005 and 2013 and the “FulvioTomizza” of Lyon Club Trieste- Europein 2006. Scotti has received the honorary citi-zenship of theComune di Monfalcone (Sigillod’oro, 2005) and the decora-tion"Commendatore dell’Ordine della Stella della Solidarietà della Repub-blica Italiana" (2006).
