These three words are on our minds, aren’t they? The turn of the calendar to August always brings a mix of excitement and sadness as summer gives way to another fresh start. This year, as you may know, I am joining the back-to-school crowd one more time. In the spring, I was accepted into Duke Divinity School’s Doctor of Ministry program. I will attend class in person for three weeks a year (August 15-19, January 2-6, 2017, and May 15-19, 2017) and then work online evenings and weekends between sessions. Since my pre-class work has already begun, I find that when I am not buried under a pile of books wondering, “What have I done?” I am very excited about what I am reading and learning already. The focus of the program is on Congregational Leadership and there is no doubt that this work will help me grow as a leader for the days ahead. This time around, I have set goals for myself. Generally, I want to work hard, do my best, and be sure that my studies through Duke enhance my work as the pastor of this church. While those seem reasonable, I am ashamed to say that I didn't think much about my goals in previous years when I went back to school. Back then, just getting though classes seemed like enough. But now, looking back, I could have done so much more than survive had I been more intentional with my plans and purposes. So, what about you? As many go back to school, are you thinking about what the year ahead may hold? As we turn to the second half of the calendar year and face the beginning of a new church year, what goals do you have? What do you want to see happen in the year ahead? How might the days ahead look different, better, than days past? These are the kind of questions we need to ask if we want to see positive things happen for ourselves in the year ahead. While these questions certainly apply as we approach our individual school and work, they are also helpful in two additional ways. These are the questions we can be asking ourselves as a church, and these are the questions you can be asking yourself about your spiritual life. As I think about the church year that is on the horizon and seasons in the life of Oxford Baptist that lie ahead, I hope we all will ask these questions in order to continue to work at becoming a church that is more fully, truly, and joyfully engaged in practicing our faith. When we do this, when we set the first goal as engaging in the practice of our faith, the goals and outcomes that emerge will lead to further joy in our faith and energy through our fellowship. Back to school can be a wonderful time, especially when we take the time to make a good plan for what lies ahead. May God be with us as we all go Back to School.
Peace, Chris

Children's Sunday School Kick-Off Join us August 28 at 9:45 am in the fellowship hall to kick-off the new school year as our kids (babies through sixth grade) promote to their new classes in Sunday School. We'll share in a light breakfast and introduce the Teachers, and then the children will go to their classes for some games while the parents stay for fellowship and conversation about our children's spiritual needs. Even if your child has never attended before, we'd love to see you this year as we learn to 'Shine On' for Jesus! Contact Natalie Aho at [email protected] with any questions.
Summer is coming to an end, and the new Church Year will soon begin. With that also comes the elec-tion of new deacons. The SAMPLE ballot will be avail-able Sunday, Aug. 28, so please review it. If you have removed your name in the past and would like to have it on the list again, please contact the church office on or before Wed. Sept. 7. New Deacon ballots will be available Sunday, Sept. 11.
