Goal: Develop a self-assessment process for correctional agencies to review their staffing, programming, classification, disciplinary, and work assignment processes for potential racial disparity.

Project Activities: Field test the process in four jurisdictions to assess the usability,

relevance, and results of the assessment and modify it, as needed. Create an instructional “handbook” to assist agencies in

conducting and interpreting the self-assessment checklist for their jurisdictions will be developed.

Products:1. Agency self-assessment checklist; 2. Handbook; and 3. Report documenting the checklist, field test findings, and key

indicators of racial disparity.

2.Field test the process in four jurisdictions to assess the usability, relevance, and results of the assessment and then modify it accordingly.

3.Develop an instructional “handbook” will be developed to assist agencies in conducting and interpreting the racial disparity self-assessment process for their jurisdictions.

4.Distribute handbook and self-assessment checklist to ASCA membership;

5.Ask Agencies complete the self-assessment tool and submit the data to ASCA for compilation into a national report.

Project Activities continued:6. Host focus groups among agencies with promising practices to

identify potential strategies and draft sample policies/procedures to avoid disparities generated by correctional polices and procedures.

7. Prepare report to document:1. Racial disparity assessment process;2. Prevalence of racial disparity across agencies with respect

to staffing, programming, classification, disciplinary, and work assignment processes; and

3. Strategies for eliminating racial disparity generated by correctional agency policies and procedures.

8. Disseminate handbook and national report nationally. Products:

1. Agency self-assessment checklist; 2. Handbook; and 3. Report documenting the checklist, field test findings, and key

indicators of racial disparity.
