TheFordsonE83W,alsosoldlaterundertheThamesbrand,wasa10cwt(halfton)lightcommercialvehiclefromFordbuiltattheDagenhamplantintheUnitedKingdombetween1938and1957.ThevanwassoldinAustraliaastheTenTen,andtheE83WwasavailableinvariousformsaroundmuchoftheworldasBritainstrovetoexportafterWW2.Insomecountries,the'cowlandchassis'onlywasimportedandlocalbodiesbuilt.

TheE83Wwasaimedatthesmallhaulage,tradeandmerchantmarket,withmanyalocalFordsonbutcher'sorgrocer'sdeliveryvanbeingfondlyrecalledbythebabyboomgeneration.A'Utilicon'estatewagonconversionwasavailableintheUK.Vansarethemostcommontoday,alongwithbuilders'pickups,whichwereflatbeds.Manyrustyvanshavebeencutdowntomakeawoodenbackpickup,flatbedinotherwords.Therarestbyfararethesteelbackstepsidepickups,withonly10or20knowntoexistintheUK.Duringandafterthesecondworldwar,manyspecialistvariationssuchasmobilecanteens,icecreamvansandevenfirepumpswerebuiltontheE83Wchassis.

TheE83Wwaspoweredbythe1172ccFord10hpsidevalveengine,witha3speedgearbox,andwasheavilygeareddownintherearaxle.ThismadetheFordsonmuchslowerthanthesaloons,withaneffectivetopspeedofnotmuchover40mph.Apartfromthe10hpengine,theE83WsharesfewpartswiththeothersmallFords,whichdoesmakethesparesalittlehardertogetholdof.Thefrontandrearaxlesaremuchheavierthanthesaloonand5cwtvancomponents,andsharesomepartssuchasbearingsandotherinternalswiththecontemporaryFordV8models(Models62andE71APilot).TheheadlampsweresharedwiththeE27Ntractor,forwhichtheywereanoptionalextraonly.

TheE83Wwasasimpleandslowbutsturdyandlovablelittlecommercial,whichcontinuedtoservewellintothe1960singoodnumbersinmanypartsoftheworld,andwhichsurvivesinreasonablenumberstoday.
