THIS WEEKS NEWS

Maserati Ghibli Undergoes Climatic Wind Tunnel Testing

With brand new engines and a new architecture, the

Maserati Ghibli is pretty much covered for a premium

drivetrain. But that and a nice interior still mean nothing

if you can't see out the car on a cold day or are

uncomfortably hot in the summer.

After all, owning such a prestigious Italian brand of car

has to come very close to customer expectations, which

are set high by German cars like the Audi A6 or BMW 5

Series.

To ensure the new Ghibli sedan can take both the hot

and the cold, Maserati engineers subjected it to harsh

weather testing in a wind tunnel that can replicate

different driving conditions.

This video reveals the work undertaken in the climatic

wind tunnel in which unusual weather conditions are

recreated. The tunnel is able to generate temperature

shifts close to 100°C (from below -30°C to more than

60°C).

New Jersey Race on F1 Calendar After All

Congratulations, New Jersey – you now have a Grand

Prix! Formula One has just published the calendar for

the 2014 world championship, and the Garden State is

one of four additions, along with Austria, Russia and

Mexico, to the schedule. New Jersey is one of several

venues listed as "provisional," meaning it is still

subject to circuit approval.

Regardless, this is a major step forward considering the

NJ race was originally scheduled for 2013 but was first

pushed back because the track wasn't ready in time, and

then canceled altogether due to funding issues.

Now resurrected, the New Jersey Grand Prix of America

will take place June 1, 2014 "on a temporary street

circuit along the Hudson River in Weehawken and West

New York, with the New York City skyline as its

backdrop," according to F1. Its addition gives America

two grands prix, with the other being the United States

Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin,

Texas (scheduled for November 9, 2014). (Lauren-

Hear the Ferrari 458 Speciale Roar!

Starting on the powertrain, the Ferrari 458 Speciale

features a modified variant of the regular 458 Italia’s 4.5-

liter V8 engine. In Speciale guise, it delivers a total of

597hp and 398lb-ft of torque thus making it the most

powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine ever produced by

Ferrari. What’s more, Ferrari claims that thanks to it

delivering 133hp per liter, it has the highest ever per liter

output of a road-going naturally aspirated engine.

Maximum power is achieved at 9000rpm while max

torque is reached at 6000rpm.

The Ferrari 458 Speciale tips the scales at just 1290kg

and Ferrari consequently claims a sprint time to

100km/h in just 3 seconds and the car can then hit

200km/h in just 9.1 seconds. What’s more, Ferrari

claims that the Ferrari 458 Speciale can sprint around

the Fiorano test track in just 1:23.5 seconds thus

making it 1.5 seconds faster than the standard car and

just .5 seconds slower than the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta.

From a styling and aerodynamic perspective, the

design of the Ferrari 458 Speciale was largely dictated

by aerodynamics but Pininfarina was involved in

creating the Italian supercar’s completed look. That

‘look’ consists of new front and rear bumpers, new

side sills, new rear diffuser and redesigned rear grille

as well as dual exhaust pipes rather than the three of

the regular Ferrari 458 Italia. The Ferrari 458 Speciale

then features a dramatic blue and white stripe

stretching down the middle.

Pirelli Signs on to Supply F1 Tires Through 2018

Formula One is never without its controversies, and one

of the major issues this year revolved around tires.

Earlier in the season, Pirelli's rubber was prone to

failure, but the Italian tire supplier worked with the

individual teams to design new compounds and issue

guidelines on how best to use them to avoid trouble.

The measures seem to have done the trick, because the

tires have held their own in the latter part of the season,

and after negotiating individual agreements with each

other the teams, the FIA has renewed Pirelli's contract to

continue supplying the series with tires moving forward.

Although the FIA hasn't revealed how long Pirelli's new

contract is good for, F1 business site Pitpass.com

reports that it will carry Pirelli through until 2018. It's

anyone's guess as to what might happen after that, but if

Pirelli continues to improve its compounds and keeps

the relevant parties happy, it could carry on for some

time.

Goodyear continuously supplied tires to certain teams

from 1959 through 1998, but that was when F1

allowed numerous rubber companies – including

Bridgestone, Firestone, Michelin, Dunlop and others –

to supply the shoes on which Formula One ran. (Noah

Ferrari Reopens Wind Tunnel after 18-Month Refurb

Ferrari is not a company used to being behind the

curve, but if you've been wondering how the Scuderia

has lost so much territory on the Formula One circuit

to a relative newcomer like Red Bull, part of the

answer could come down to its wind tunnel.

Seriously, the wind tunnel? Yes, the wind tunnel.

Aerodynamics play an increasingly vital role in F1

racing, and while Red Bull has one of the best in the

business, Ferrari's hasn't been running right for some

time now.

A year and a half ago Ferrari shut down the galleria del

vento at its headquarters in Maranello, citing problems

with "correlation" - that is, a major discrepancy between

the results it got in the wind tunnel, in CFD computations

and on the racetrack. Having narrowed the problem

down, the Scuderia embarked upon a major overhaul.

It's been using Toyota's facility in Cologne, Germany, in

the meantime, but as team principal Stefano Domenicali

put it, not having your own wind tunnel on premises "is

like playing basketball with one hand behind your back."

Now the renovations reportedly complete, however, and

Ferrari will begin using its wind tunnel again next month.

With Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull so far in the lead, it

may be too late to fix this year's car to any meaningful

effect. But while the design of next year's car may

already be close to finalized, getting the aero up to spec

could mean the difference between putting Ferrari back

on top or letting it slide even further. And with two former

champions forming a crimson-clad "dream team" next

season, the new facility couldn't have come any sooner.

VW Loses $6.27 Million for Every Bugatti Veyron Sold

For every Bugatti Veryon that’s sold, Volkswagen

loses US$6.27 million, according to an analysis by

Berstein Research. Since the supercar was introduced

in 2005, the Volkswagen Group knew that it will be

sold. However, they proceeded to launch the car as it

is a technical showcase. But it’s only now that we

realize just how much of a loss the group incurred.

The figure that Berstein Research quoted is very high

and is hard to believe. It makes us think that the

Veyron must be so significant that the group still sells

it despite the huge losses. Volkswagen has made

other sacrifices though. For example, the Phaeton

(which has been on sale since 2001) represents a loss

of US$38,252 on every unit.

In addition, every purchase of the Renault Vel Satis

resulted to US$25,459 loss. Other losses include

US$20,927 for the Peugeot 1007, US$10,247 for the

Audi A2, US$6,376 for the Jaguar X-Type, US$6,080

for the Smart ForTwo, US$4,826 for the Renault

Laguna, US$3,712 for the Fiat Stilo, and US$1,962 for

the first-gen Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

The model that had the biggest loss overall is Daimler's

Smart with US$4.55B between 1995 and 2006. Coming

in at second place is Fiat with a loss of US$2.86B for the

Stilo produced from 2001 to 2009. At third place is the

Volkswagen Phaeton with a loss of US$2.71B, Peugeot

1007 built from 2004 to 2009 with US$2.57B, first-gen

Mercedes-Benz A-Class US$2.32B, Bugatti Veyron and

Jaguar X-Type with each representing a loss of

US$2.31B, Renault Laguna made from 2006 to 2012

with a loss of US$2.1B, Audi A2 with a US$1.93B loss

and the Renault Vel Satis which stood for a loss of

US$1.61B during production (2001-2009). (Andrew

Ferrari 458s Win Grand-Am GT-Class Championship

Alessandro Balzan is 2013 Rolex Series GT Driver Champion

On September 28, 2013 Ferrari ended the Grand-Am

Rolex Sports Car Series on a high note by sweeping the

GT-class Championship at Lime Rock Park, CT.

Alessandro Balzan, driver of no. 63 Scuderia Corsa

Ferrari 458 Italia became the 2013 Rolex Series GT

driver champion and secured the Rolex Series team

championship for Scuderia Corsa. Somewhere out

there, former Ferrari factory driver and supporter Mario

Andretti must be celebrating the result.

Ferrari is no stranger to the podium, this is the second

consecutive season that the manufacturer has won the

Rolex Series Manufacturer Championship – scoring

two wins, four pole positions, and 13 podium finishes

in the season. However, the race was not without any

incidents.

Balzan survived a heavy-hit that came from another

GT-class car coupled with a late-race restart, causing

him to finish in second position. Following closely

behind was no. 64 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia

that was driven by Jeff Westphal and Johannes van

Overbeek.

“I was never relaxed during the race since things were

always happening in front of us, behind us, or next to

us,” said Balzan. “The DP’s were passing us and

sometimes it was a nightmare because you know that

you are leading the championship but you also know

that you are losing so much time in traffic. I am very

happy for the team. Everyone at Scuderia Corsa,

really deserved it. It’s really crazy to think we are

champions in the first year. I have to thank Giacomo

because he believed in me, otherwise I would have

never gotten the seat. I’m a 100% Scuderia Corsa

product, and it is a dream for a little Italian driver

coming from Italy that is now living in Modena.”

The LaFerrari On The Nurburgring Is A New Level Of Aural Delight

Ferrari still has the LaFerrari at the Nurburgring. Pump

up the volume, because this is, by far, the best thing

you'll hear today.

It is odd to see Ferrari officially testing at the

Nurburgring, since almost all of their testing is done at

the Fiorano test track.

We've heard that Ferrari is testing the car at the 'Ring

because they want to beat the 6:57 lap time set by the

Porsche 918 Spyder. But if they don't beat that time,

don't expect an official laptime to ever be released by

the folks in Maranello.

Instead, expect them to just say they were there for

development testing... And to make the locals' heads

explode with the sounds of V12 Hybrid glory echoing

through the mountains.

Maserati Sees Vehicle Sales Jumping to 16,000 this Year

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Italian luxury carmaker

Maserati expects its sales to jump to about 16,000

cars this year from 6,300 last year, its chief executive

said, boosting the brand's profit margin by a "high

single digit" percentage.

Should the forecasts prove correct, Maserati would

smash its previous sales record of 9,000 cars in 2008.

The company aims to sell 50,000 cars in 2015.

Selling more Maseratis is an important piece of brand

owner Fiat's plan to return to profit in 2016 in Europe,

where it lost 700 million euros ($928 million) last year

in a shrinking market.

The sales growth is coming from the launch of the

110,000 euro ($150,000) Quattroporte sedan and the

new Ghibli model, an entry-level sedan starting at

66,000 euros, CEO Harald Wester said at the

Frankfurt car show on Tuesday.

Forbes Friday Market Report October 4th, 2013

For More Information Please Contact Craig Forbes at (678) 802-5000 or [email protected]

"The product is key in this business. If you offer a real

alternative in an attractive segment, you can attract the

customers," he said, adding he saw 2013 revenue

jumping to at least 1.2 billion euros from 634 million last

year.

Maserati had about 17,000 orders at the end of July and

20,304 at the end of August, he said. July and August

orders show that Maserati is adding 3,000 new requests

per month.

Wester is counting on the upcoming Maserati sports

utility vehicle, the Levante, to sell about 20,000-25,000

annually when it is launched in 2015, he said on

Tuesday.

Wester said new customers were "coming from other

premium brands," but could not provide a breakdown.

In China, the biggest market for the new Quattroporte,

the average buyer age is 37 years old and 40 percent of

the customers are women, he said.

Maserati will have 320 dealerships worldwide by the end

of 2013, up from 250 at the end of 2011. Wester is

targeting 420-450 by the end of 2015.

"If Europe doesn't recover, it won't make sense to invest

a lot in the European dealer network," he said.

Maserati's profit margin should grow by a high single

digit percentage in 2013, Wester said.

For 2014, the executive said he is targeting sales of

40,000 cars and sees revenue "at two and a half times

2012."

"Our goal is to have a double digit profit margin in

2014," he added. (Jennifer Clark)

Ferrari GTO Becomes Most Expensive Car at $52 Million

The red competition car, formerly owned by the

Greenwich, Connecticut-based collector Paul

Pappalardo, was acquired by an unidentified buyer in

a private transaction, said three specialist traders who

independently confirmed the purchase and price to

Bloomberg News. Recently, the car has been owned

by a Spanish collector, the car website

www.barchetta.com said.

The price is a 49 percent increase on the record for

any auto, achieved last year for another 250 GTO.

Values of classic cars, particularly Ferraris of the

1950s and 1960s, continue to grow, attracting new

enthusiasts, investors and speculators -- and

prompting fears of a bubble in the market.

“Today the GTO is considered the top car to own,” the

California-based dealer Don Williams of Blackhawk

Collection said in an interview. “It’s like the Mona Lisa.

It has a mystique. If you have a GTO, you have a

great collection.”

Forbes Friday Market Report October 4th, 2013

For More Information Please Contact Craig Forbes at (678) 802-5000 or [email protected]

The car was acquired by Pappalardo in 1974, restored

and subsequently driven by the collector in many historic

races, including the 2002 Le Mans Classic, before being

sold on.

“We don’t confirm these things,” Pappalardo said when

telephoned last night. “I have no comment.”

Stirling Moss

The Italian marque’s 250 GTO, created in 1962 to

compete at the Le Mans 24-Hour and other Grand-

Touring car races, is the world’s most desirable and

expensive car. Only 39 were produced. An apple-green

version, made for the British race driver Stirling Moss,

was sold privately for a record $35 million, Bloomberg

News reported in June 2012.

The latest record-breaking GTO, chassis number 5111,

has a distinguished competition history, having won the

1963 Tour de France road race with the French driver

Jean Guichet at the wheel.

New buyers have been attracted by classic cars’

investment potential, as well as the chance they give to

participate in concours and racing events.

The bellwether auctions in California timed to coincide

with the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

raised a record $301.9 million in August. The total, which

included $27.5 million for a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S

NART Spyder convertible, was the highest for a series of

classic-car sales anywhere in the world, according to the

Michigan-based Hagerty database.

Pink Floyd

The highest prices for investment-grade autos have

been achieved through discreet private sales. Owners

of other Ferrari GTOs, who include Pink Floyd

drummer Nick Mason, have recently received offers

between $40 million and $50 million from prospective

purchasers, dealers said.

Mason was among the GTO owners convening for a

50th-anniversary get-together in France in July 2012.

He was joined by the Goldman Sachs banking scion

Peter Sachs; Rob Walton, chairman of Wal-Mart; and

Lawrence Stroll, the financier who built Tommy Hilfiger

into a global brand in the 1990s.

“It’s a cult car,” the London-based Ferrari dealer Joe

Macari said in an interview. “If you’re a billionaire, you

feel you have to have one. I don’t understand the

appeal of them. They’re not very beautiful and they

never won Le Mans. I’d rather have a Testa Rossa.”

The HAGI F index of private and public sales of rare

Ferraris was up 54.52 percent for the year, the

London-based Historic Auto Group said in a report in

August.

Sustainable Rises

“Nothing goes up like that in the mid-term,” HAGI

founder Dietrich Hatlapa said in an interview. “Price rises

of 55 percent aren’t sustainable in any market. We’re not

saying the market is going to collapse. It will probably

average out over time.”

Hatlapa said that prices of the rarest Ferraris have risen

at an average annual rate of 15 percent for more than 30

years.

The current excitement in the classic Ferrari market has

been confirmed by other individual owners.

The Belgian-based collector Johan van Puyvelde

exhibited an unrestored 1948 Ferrari 166 Inter-Sport

Corsa competition car in the Salon Prive concours show

at Syon House, London, last month.

That Ferrari had been bought from a Californian private

seller for between $2 million and $2.5 million last year.

Van Puyvelde was recently offered $4 million for the car,

the Belgian collector said in an interview.

“It is a bubble for certain cars,” said van Puyvelde,

surrounded by well-heeled Salon Prive visitors, enjoying

their complimentary Pommery champagne and

barbecued lobster lunches. “The people who buy the top

things do use them. The market is driven by genuine

enthusiasm. They want to take part in events like this. I

don’t think that many people are buying just for

investment.” (Scott Reyburn)

Maserati V6 Motorcycles by Chris Barber

Remember Chris Barber? He's the guy behind the

Desmohog Harley/Ducati hybrid, the AlfaBeast and the

Hill Climb Special. Well, he's at it again, three different

specials this time, all based on the Maserati V6. Not

your everyday custom motorcycles, from a builder who

likes to mix and match.

The Maserati V6 is more compact than the V6 engine

he used in the AlfaBeast, and Chris is going to keep

the moving parts hidden away for a very clean look. If

everything works out as planned, we'll see a street

fighter, a hardtail bobber and a replica of the Laverda

V6.

The Maserati Barber will have a wheelbase of 1620

mm and I hope will weigh less than 700 lbs.

Transmission is via a 6-speed Baker Frankentranny,

fitted with a kickstarter, the clutch assembly is Jims

driven by a custom made 58 link primary chain.

Oil in the transfer housing and primary drive case is

shared with the sump oil; oil blown from the rear crank

journal will enter the transfer housing and flow out to the

sump, maintaining the same level as the sump. A Ducat

ST2 alternator and rotor are housed in the case on the

end of the transfer box.

As I told Chris, I like the way he thinks. Based on his

track record with past builds, this should be interesting.

I'm looking forward to progress reports and I bet you are,

too. (Paul Crowe)

Ferrari Eyes DTM for Marciello

Ferrari's top young protege Raffaele Marciello could

compete in the DTM next season.

Ex-Ferrari Formula 1 chief engineer Luca Baldisserri,

who is the boss of the Ferrari Driver Academy that

mentors Marciello's career, said that the 18-year-old

would combine any DTM campaign with a step up the

open-wheel ladder.

Marciello is in the fight for the Formula 3 European

Championship title, and leads main rival Felix

Rosenqvist by 9.5 points with six races remaining.

Regarding the FDA's plans for Marciello for 2014,

Baldisserri said: "I think there are three options. One is

GP2, because it's the same tracks as Formula 1 and

the same tires, so he can get used to the Pirelli

behavior.

"Then there is the World Series by Renault, which is a

very good package, a lot of down force, really good

tires with a lot of grip in the corners and a good

championship. And then I think there's DTM as well. In

terms of professional qualities of the teams, it's the

closest to Formula 1. And for a young driver, having

the possibility to have some rhythm with a really

organized and professional team is important.

"A program in DTM would be a shame for a driver like

'Lello' on its own, but not if it's coupled with another

championship."

Baldisserri added that the choice of manufacturer is

not important, although Marciello's Prema Power

team-run F3 car is powered by Mercedes engines.

"For us it's not a big deal," he said. "We are focusing

on the driver." (Marcus Simmons)

Make Your Boring Car Sound Like a Ferrari with This App

For those of you stuck with a ride that doesn't sound

anything like a purebred sports car, London-based RjDj

is about to release an app that will give those of you with

dreary sounding four-pots the thrill of listening to the

engine sounds from something more audibly pleasing.

According to the company, Vroom! The Car App is more

than just a paid app that makes noises mimicking stuff

like a 12-cylinder Ferrari. They say it detects when you

accelerate or take a corner or hit a bump to adapt the

noise accordingly. Actually, its creators say it's ideal for

"everyone who has a Fiat but wants a Ferrari," so

everyone who just bought a base Fiat 500 but didn't

have the cash for an Abarth are now in luck.

In the video released by RjDj, some kids are convinced

this guy's old VW Polo is as much of a Ferrari as his red

hat is.

The app goes on sale Thursday in the Apple appstore,

and RjDj says a version for Android is on its way. While

this is the worst kind of autoposeurism, we can't wait to

try it out in some cars that are audibly challenged.(Zac

AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY

How Forced Induction Works

Air. Fuel. Spark. Take one away from your car and

you’re going nowhere fast. Increase one, air for

example, and things get interesting. More air equals

more power — the very principle behind forced

induction. By compressing intake air prior to feeding it

into the combustion chamber, forced induction squeezes

more air in, along with a correspondingly greater amount

of fuel. This results in bigger booms. Bigger booms

equal faster, more powerful rotations at the crankshaft.

In terms of horsepower and torque this is a good thing:

forced induction engines will always up the ante over

their naturally aspirated equivalents.

Two systems, supercharging and turbocharging, make

this all happen. They differ chiefly in how they generate

boost: where a turbocharger is spun by exhaust gases, a

supercharger is powered by a pulley via the crankshaft.

But before we examine their differences, discuss why

they aren’t used everywhere and try to figure out if one

is better than the other, let’s take a look at some

boosting basics that apply to both systems.

Boost Basics

Boost describes the amount of pressure that a forced

induction system creates. A typical system found in

that new whip you’ve been eyeballing typically creates

around six to eight pounds per square inch (psi) of

extra pressure. Compared to a naturally aspirated

engine, that boosted beast sucks in almost 50% more

air. For the reasons we mentioned above (namely,

bigger booms) this enables smaller displacement

engines to punch above their weight class, with 4-

cylinder engines making horsepower usually reserved

for 6 and 8 cylinder blocks, while hitting smashing EPA

targets in the process. Sadly, there are some

limitations.

The problem lies in the air-to-fuel ratio (AFR) that a

motor can handle. An optimum AFR would provide just

enough air to burn all of the available fuel. This

completely efficient combustion is called a

stoichiometric mixture, or stoich, and has an AFR of

13:1 — thirteen parts air to one part fuel. But

stoichiometric mixtures burn extremely “hot” and can

damage engine internals when the hammer’s down.

Forbes Friday Market Report October 4th, 2013

For More Information Please Contact Craig Forbes at (678) 802-5000 or [email protected]

Under high load, engines cycle at faster RPMs

(revolutions per minute) and simply can’t dissipate the

extra heat. This creates knock, or pre-detonation, which

causes compression levels within the cylinder that are

too high. To keep it together, engine management

software causes engines to run on the rich side to keep

cooler (cylinder) heads. In a forced induction engine

similar solutions are applied to cool those bigger booms

and soothe scorching cylinder walls. It’s also why your

force-fed whip pines for premium at the pumps.

The Spin on Turbos

As an engine performs its normal cycle, exhaust gases

exit through the exhaust manifold. In a turbocharged

engine, these gases are re-routed to pass through and

spin a turbine. The spinning of this turbine creates a

vacuum, which sucks in and compresses air prior to

forcing it into the intake manifold of the engine. As the

engine spins faster, so too does the turbo, thereby

forcing even more air into the motor. Unused air is

released through a bypass.

Turbocharging has been around almost as long as the

automobile. Though patented in 1905 by Swiss engineer

Alfred Büchi, it took some time before an exhaust spun

turbine found a home under the hood. The 1962

Oldsmobile Jetfire was the first to feature a force-fed

engine, with the fabled Corvair Monza Spyder following

suit shortly thereafter. Unfortunately, high compression

and knock caused reliability issues and the turbo was

torched after just one model year. BMW was the next

manufacturer to experiment with exhaust driven

induction almost a decade later with its iconic 2002

Turbo.

Turbo lag — the time it takes to spool up an exhaust-

driven turbine — is the main difficulty associated with

turbocharging. To hit optimal boost, the turbine must

spin at or above a certain RPM. This only occurs when

the right amount of exhaust gases pass through the

system. During lag a car may feel almost anemic and

then, all of sudden, full power kicks in. It almost feels

like you’ve been rear-ended.

Modern turbos temper lag with technology — for

example, twin-turbo set-ups in both sequential and

parallel formats. In a parallel format, two smaller

turbos on each exhaust bank spool quickly and

combine to create the same amount of oomph of a

larger, lag-prone, unit. Sequential systems use

complicated plumbing to allocate one turbo to spin

under all conditions, with the second unit bypassed.

Then, at a predetermined RPM, the second unit spools

to life to serve up the full Monty.

Variable Geometry Turbochargers (VGT) are highly

effective at mitigating lag. VGTs act like a small turbo

under low-load to deliver an efficient flow of power. As

your right foot gets heavier, the turbine’s vanes shift

position and the powerband increases in a linear

fashion until you hit the redline, shift, and do it again.

Because of their minimal lag and inherent low boost

thresholds, VGTs are extremely efficient at doling out

optimum boost throughout the rev range; this also

makes them pricey and rare.

Supercharged, And at the Ready

A supercharger (also called a “blower”) is powered by a

belt, similar to the accessory drive belt that turns your air

conditioning unit. As the engine’s crankshaft spins, so

does the supercharger. This spinning creates a vacuum

that sucks in and compresses air which is then forced

directly into the intake. The direct-drive relationship of

the supercharger and engine create a very linear

powerband. Superchargers’ direct-drive design means

that boost is instantaneous, and by compressing and

delivering a fixed volume of air in direct relation to

engine RPMs, optimum boost is available at any and all

throttle positions. That linear relation also means that the

amount of boost created at 6,000 rpm is double what’s

made at 3,000 rpm.

Mercedes-Benz was the first to feature a blown-motored

(supercharged) car in 1921. Dubbed the Kompressor (a

name still used today), it was the first road car to feature

forced induction. Other manufacturers quickly followed

suit, giving birth to an era of homologation specials,

including the iconic Blower Bentley.

In general, superchargers suffer because they must

“steal” power from the engine they’re strapped to in

order to perform — sometimes requiring up to half of an

engine’s naturally aspirated horsepower. The

supercharger on top of a top fuel dragster needs the

punch of a Bugatti Veyron’s full power just to start

spinning. In all cases the power developed by the

supercharger will create a net gain effect, but it also

translates to efficiency concerns when used in normal

vehicles.

Most manufacturers, even Mercedes’ AMG division,

have started moving away from supercharging in favor

of exhaust-driven experiments. A turbo’s reliance on

kinetic energy that would otherwise be wasted through

the tailpipe means there is no need to create

additional EPA-robbing emissions to generate boost.

Plus, with the various technological improvements

made with turbochargers and other engine internals

such as direct injection, manufacturers can achieve

power gains without the sacrifices that traditionally

sidelined forced induction. It was once said that in the

search for horsepower, there’s no replacement for

displacement. Fortunately for all us fossil-fuel-burning

lead-foots, that is simply no longer the case. (Matt

Neundorf)

HELMET FITMENT

Size and Fit

A helmet needs to fit you properly to provide optimal

safety. First and foremost, the helmet should be snug on

your head. It might take some getting used to, but a

snug fit is incredibly important. If it’s loose on your head,

this can cause serious problems, especially in a crash.

When you put the helmet on, it should provide a bit of

resistance. Remember, if it goes on too easily, it will

come off easily, too. Once it’s on your head, it shouldn’t

twist too far to either side, or move back and forth or up

and down on your head.

Pressure should be firm and uniform around your

head. You shouldn’t be able to stick your fingers very

far between your head and the inside of the helmet. If

you can, try a size smaller.

Still, you want your head to feel comfortable in the

helmet. “Snug” does not mean that you should feel like

you’re putting your head in a vice. When you get the

chance, try wearing the helmet for 10 minutes or so, to

make sure it’s comfortable. You shouldn’t be in pain,

and if discomfort becomes distracting, there is a

problem.

Keep in mind that sizing may vary from one brand to

another. If you usually wear a Medium in one brand,

you shouldn’t just trust that you’ll wear a Medium

universally. Whenever possible, try different sizes on.

Another way to make sure you’re getting the right size

is to check the size measurements for the

manufacturer you are considering. (Sizing charts: Arai,

Bell, Stilo.) Measure the circumference of your head

just above the eyebrows to the back of your head.

Measure several times, and use the largest

measurement you come up with. Compare this to the

manufacturer’s sizing chart to see what size helmet

you should order.

Also, if you’re going to wear a balaclava with your

helmet, take the measurement while wearing one.

If you have trouble finding a helmet that fits uniformly,

there are options to get a proper fit. Try extra padding.

You can adjust your fit with crown, cheek, and ear pads.

Many simply attach to the inside of your helmet with

Velcro.

Features And Pricing

With helmets, as with most things, you get what you pay

for.

You can get away with spending just a few hundred

dollars on a new helmet. The most basic helmets will

provide you with the certification you need to go racing,

with enough comfort that you can stand to wear the

helmet long enough to race. For less than $800 you can

even get a helmet with some vents, lightweight

construction, HANS anchor systems, communications

equipment, and maybe even a basic forced air

compatibility.

As you go up in price, in the $1000 to $2000 range, the

helmets become more sophisticated. Ventilation

improves, and the increased airflow will make the helmet

more comfortable to wear. Better materials also mean

increased comfort, but may even include upgraded

safety technology. Often, more money means a better

design, so the helmet will probably offer some

aerodynamic benefits.

At $3000 and up, you will be buying a state-of-the-art

helmet. Often, these will feature carbon fiber

construction, and will be incredibly lightweight. You will

have increasing options for ventilation, visibility, and

interior fit. Expect anti-fog technology in the visor, and

impact safety that goes above and beyond the

required Snell certification. You’ll have more options

for communications technology, with improved sound

and noise reduction. In this price range, you should

feel absolutely comfortable wearing the helmet for

extended periods of time, with a good fit, optimal

temperature, increased visibility, a low weight, and

very little fatigue.

And, yes, you can spend even more on a helmet. At

$7000 and up, you’ll be able to pretty much completely

customize your helmet. In this price range, you’ll be

working with someone to set up a helmet exactly the

way you want it, built to your specifications for a

perfect fit, specific accessories, and, of course,

excellent safety.(WRS)
