Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study. As an apprentice you’ll:

work alongside experienced staff gain job-specific skills

earn a wage and get holiday pay study towards a related qualification (usually one day a week)

Apprenticeships take 1 to 4 years to complete depending on their level.

2. Levels of apprenticeship

An apprenticeship has an equivalent education level and can be:

Intermediate - equivalent to 5 GCSE passes Advanced - equivalent to 2 A level passes

Higher - can lead to NVQ Level 4 and above, or a foundation degree

If you need more experience

If you feel you’re not ready for an apprenticeship, a traineeship is a course designed to prepare you for one.

You can apply for a traineeship if you’re:

eligible to work in England unemployed and have little or no work experience

aged 16 to 18 and qualified below Level 3, or aged 19 to 24 and qualified below Level 2

A traineeship is a course to get you ready for work or an apprenticeship. It can take up to 6 months.

You’ll get:

help with English and maths (if you need it) a work experience placement lasting at least 6 weeks

You won’t be paid, but your employers can sometimes give you expenses for things like travel and meals.

Our next 16 – 25 Fairbridge Programme is scheduled to start on Monday 19th October. After this we only have 1 more course before Christmas (16th November).

Fairbridge starts with a week long Access course (Monday – Friday) which includes a two night residential at the end of the week (Wednesday and Thursday evening). Young people take part in a range of activities during their Access course including climbing, raft-building, archery and hiking. These activities are designed to help young people to develop soft skills like confidence, motivation and team work skills. The residential is held at Butchers Coppice in Bournemouth and we will be camping. Every young person that completes the Access course gets a certificate and we hold a mini celebration event on the Friday afternoon to award the group for completing the week. After successfully completing the Access course, young people then progress on to our Follow-On programme. At this stage young people are able to choose the activities they want to take part in based on the kinds of skills they’d like to develop with us. We offer a programme of activities that include adventurous (biking, survival sessions, geo-caching for example) and non-adventurous activities (like art, drama, music and cooking sessions). We offer young people six of these sessions initially, ensuring young people sign up to sessions that will really benefit their personal development, after which we review whether they feel ready to progress onto their next challenge or whether they would benefit from some further support on Fairbridge. Throughout their time on our programme, young people are supported 1:1 (every 3-4 weeks) by a dedicated Programme Executive. In their 1:1s young people will be encouraged to think about what it is they would like to work towards (job, apprenticeship, college, university or even volunteering) and are given support to work towards their goals. Apprentice Activity Instructors

As an Apprentice Activity Instructor you will be working towards gaining your Level 2 NVQ certificate in Activity Leadership. To do so you will be keeping yourself busy as you assist with the instruction of a range of activities - including canoeing, archery and climbing; as well as being responsible for the correct storage, maintenance and testing of equipment; whilst completing set work that will be monitored for the duration of the course by Locomotivation. Requirements of the role are: No specific qualifications are required for this role as full training will be provided. But you must be enthusiastic and have the ability to communicate effectively with customers of all ages. You will need to be able to prioritise your workload and complete work within set within timescales. For insurance purposes applicants must be a minimum of 18 years old.

Activity Instructors

As an Activity Instructor you will be the one to take groups of all ages on their adventures at Girlguiding’s Training and Activity Centres! Ensure safe and effective operation is upheld at all times, by regular maintenance and testing of equipment, you will be responsible for the planning and leading of activity sessions, which range from abseiling to archery, canoeing to rock climbing and much more! Requirements of the role are: Two NGB qualifications/a recognised equivalent (see site for details) OR significant experience along with the ability to work as part of a team and on your own initiative. For insurance purposes applicants must be a minimum of 18 years old.

Trainee Activity Instructors

As a Trainee Activity Instructor you’ll train onsite, building your experience and confidence, so that once qualified you’ll be responsible for the instruction of sessions, for groups of all ages, at one of Girlguiding’s three Training and Activity Centres. Your day to day duties will be determined by your line manager and will depend on the training qualifications you have, but could include activities from archery to zip wires! Requirements of the role are: You must be enthusiastic and willing to undertake the appropriate training to gain new qualifications. You will need the ability to communicate effectively with customers of all ages, run safe and enjoyable activity sessions and work as part of a team and on your own initiative. National Citizen Service Youth Options is delivering the National Citizen Service (NCS) across Southampton this summer. We still have some spaces left in our August programmes. The course is for ALL 16 and 17 years olds (school years 11 and 12) and is a 4 week programme including 1 week activity residential (Staying at Runways End residential centre, Aldershot), 1 week ‘university experience’ life skills residential (staying Solent Uni halls, and finally 2 weeks planning and delivering a social action project in their community. The whole 4 weeks only costs £50 (bursaries available) and has lots of elements that really enhance any young person’s CV.

What is it?

National Citizen Service (NCS) is open to all 16 and 17-year-olds in England.

It helps you build your skills for work and life, while you take on new challenges and meet new friends.

It runs in the spring, summer and autumn. You’ll have a short time away from home and take part in a team project that will help your community.

NCS brings together young people from different backgrounds and helps them develop greater confidence, self-awareness and responsibility. It encourages personal and social development by working on skills like leadership, teamwork and communication.

Participants develop a social action project to deal with a local issue they’re passionate about, and spend 30 hours putting the project into action in their community.

Zoologists study animals and their behaviour. If you are good at science, interested in animals and want to know more about them, this could be an ideal job for you.

To become a zoologist, you will need to be able to carry out detailed work in an accurate and organised way. You will need patience and the ability to concentrate for long periods. You’ll also need strong communication and IT skills.

You will usually need a degree in a subject such as zoology, animal ecology, animal behaviour or conservation.

Zoologists work in a wide range of areas including: developing and testing new drugs improving agricultural crops and livestock disease and pest control conserving endangered habitats and species animal welfare and education developing policies and enforcing regulations for government agencies You would usually have a specialism, for example ecology (animal environments), herpetology (reptiles), entomology (insects), parasitology (parasites) or paleozoology (fossil remains). Your tasks would vary depending on the particular job, but could include: carrying out field and laboratory research studying animals in their natural environment or in captivity identifying, recording and monitoring animal species gathering information and interpreting it using complex procedures, such as computerised molecular and cellular analysis, and in-vitro fertilisation producing detailed technical reports giving presentations and publishing information in journals and books supervising technicians

Children (under 16 years of age) are not allowed to work:
