PRAYING THE NEWS | SEPTEMBER 6, 2020
“…you shall not kill...”
ROMANS 13:9O God, we are suffering deep wounds due to hardness of heart – hearts that fail to recognize others as neighbors and your beloved children. Hearts that don’t seek to listen, relying on power instead of understanding or kindness. Please be with all those living in fear and loss. Soften hearts to feel their pain so that, as a people, we are moved to change. May we obey your commandment to honor all life as your creation and gift. Jesus, we trust in you. Amen.
11
Pray: Lord Jesus: May your Word produce plentiful fruits of salvation in me and through me. Make me an instrument of your Spirit of Love to serve the plans of God the Father. Amen.
3 STEPS FOR CALLING OTHERS TO REPENTANCEThis Sunday's readings all speak of the need to stand up for what is holy and right and true in a way that that invites others to turn away from sin. If we don't, we indirectly play a part in the sins he or she commits, and we will be held accountable (see the first reading).
If we do take a stand against sin but without compassion and mercy and unconditional love, that too is a sin (the second reading).
Jesus shows us in the Gospel reading that in our efforts to stop a fellow Christian from sinning, it's important to rely on our Christian community for advocacy and prayer support. How?
First, we speak to the sinner. When we know that someone is harming himself and others (all sins are harmful even when we can't see the harm), if we don't try to impart this knowledge to him or her at least once, our silence is unloving and uncaring.
Once we've shared the truth, even if the sinner does not change, we're free of any guilt. But we must not stop trying, and so we take one or two others with us in a stronger effort to help the sinner understand and repent.
And if that fails, we try again with still more backing.
When every attempt to help someone has failed, only then do we quit. In reality, it's not us who's walking away. The sinner is the one who has chosen the path of separation. However, remember how Jesus treated the Gentiles and tax collectors (i.e., the outsiders, the separated ones): He never stopped loving them. He still chose to die for them.
Questions for Personal Reflection: Whose sins have greatly disturbed you lately? What have you done about it? How loving and caring have you been in handling it?
Questions for Community Faith Sharing: What bothers you about the way some people have pointed out your sins or the sins of others? How could they have been more compassionate? Share the story of a time when someone successfully led another into repentance and growth. Explain why the effort was effective.

FAITH & FAMILY FOCUS
Our time on Earth is precious. Live in the present moment.
SLCS: MODEL FOR REOPENINGPrincipal Suzanne Barto and the faculty and staff of St. Laurence Catholic School were praised by local health authorities as they reopened for on-campus learning for the 2020-2021 school year. Dr. Joe Anzaldua, Medical Director of Emergency Medical Services for Sugar Land, Stafford, and Missouri City, stated this in his report to the Archdiocese following a 2nd audit and tour of the school on 8/29/20: “Ms. Barto and her team took most, if not all, of our recommendations and brought them into a working functional reality. I am in awe of her vision, leadership, hard work and commitment to our faith community and the children it serves. St. Laurence should serve as a model school for the diocese. Even the
county health officials took pictures to serve as a model for other schools they work with during school re-openings.”
Please pray for the SLCS students, families, teachers, staff and administration during this unusual time in our parish’s history. To see the SLCS Return to School Plan and coronavirus updates, please visit stlaurenceschool.org/coronavirus.
BLESSINGS FOR WCP STAFFFr. Jaison blessed the St. Laurence Weekday Children’s Program staff as they reopened on August 12 to care for children crib through 5 years. To ensure safe-distanced play and learning, the number of children in the program was reduced this year from 235 to 99. Eliminating the 2-day and 3-day program options also made it simpler for WCP to keep a sanitized environment for the children who are there Monday through Friday.
Many of the best practices for safety and sanitization were learned over the summer when WCP was the first early childcare program permitted by the archdiocese to open for children of essential workers.
Throughout these challenging months, Becky Wilkinson stayed on as Director, delaying her retirement to ensure a smooth transition to Ban Haller, WCP Assistant Director for the past 5 years.
stlaurence.org/weekday-childrens-program
A COVID-friendly farewell event is planned for Saturday, September 19. Everyone is invited to drive by the WCP entrance of the Ave Maria Center between 10am-12pm, to wave to “Miss Becky” and thank her for her loving leadership and care for young parish families for the past 21 years. Spread the word!

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCETeens in Edge, Life Teen and Confirmation Prep learn in small groups led by adult volunteers. These Core Team members encourage and support our youth, especially important during this time of isolation. Groups will begin remotely then transition on-campus when permitted. Please contact Youth Minister Mike Cleary ([email protected], 281-265-5774) to help minister to our teens.
FAITH FORMATION THIS FALLOur Faith Formation team has worked hard to create a plan for PreK, CCE, Edge and Life Teen that adapts to the specific challenges families are facing this year. All programs will begin remotely for the first 6 weeks, then will transition to on-campus learning when it is safe to do so. Register now at stlaurence.org/registration. Once your children are registered, you will receive information about the distribution of materials beginning this week. Contact Ruba Kaiser: [email protected], 281265-5774
CCE: FLEXIBLE FOR FAMILIES A Flex Faith Formation program has been created for families with children in PreK through Grade 5. Instead of grade-specific lessons, parents can engage with children in multiple grade levels at the same time, for a family conversation on basic teachings of the Church. The lessons are easy! Be your children’s first and best teachers of the faith through these family sessions at home.
EDGE AND LIFE TEEN Teens in middle school and high school need interaction with their peers. Although they will begin remotely, all teens will be assigned to a small group and participate in virtual sessions for a lesson, discussion and support.
HOME STUDY A Home Study program is available for every grade level, PreK3 thru Grade 12. Get all the support and resources you need and set the pace to fit your family’s schedule. If you are concerned about your child being on campus for in-person learning, this may be your best option.

Q.Can I offer a Mass for 2021?
A.Sorry, but we aren’t accepting any Mass Intentions yet for 2021. Since this virus hit, we haven’t had the 7:30am daily Mass in the chapel – and not
all our Sunday Masses either – mostly because we’re not running at 100% yet. (I’m sure this will be another question, right?) When we do start having more Masses, I will move ALL the Masses we missed over to sometime in 2021. So it wouldn’t be fair to take new intentions now, right? Now, if you had a Mass scheduled back in March and we didn’t offer it, call me and we can discuss when and where to move it. We are still accepting Mass Intentions to be offered at the Seminary, if you are interested. Thanks for being understanding about this.

This column in the Sunday bulletin is a place that parishioners may ask for intercessory prayer in their time of sickness.
How it works:• Call the parish office during business hours (281-980-9812)• The sick person must be a parishioner of St. Laurence• Request must come directly from the person (or a close family
member, such as spouse or parent)• Ask for your name to be added to the PRAY FOR THE SICK list• Your name will appear on the list for 4 weeks• Need prayer longer than 4 weeks? Simply call back and your
name will be added for another 4 week periodNot a parishioner?Ask for the name to be added to the Book of the Sick. Anyone in need of prayers for healing may have their name written in the Book of the Sick. These intentions are prayed for at every Mass. The Book of the Sick is located near the statue of St. Joseph in the church. You may write the name in the book yourself, or if you are not able to come to the church, we are happy to do it for you.
Almighty God, as we ask your help for our brothers and sisters who are ill, we ask you to help us to be healing people in our time and place. May your love touch others through us, and may we help all people to live in peace. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
