~1 Corinthians 1:23
Alter cloths are white; symbolizing for us the glory of God revealed in the humanity of Jesus.
Welcome to all! This week’s focus:
“For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not
because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life.”

THE ORDER OF SERVICE
I. WE PREPARE TO MEET OUR LORD THE INVOCATION We invoke (“call upon”) the name of our Triune God.
PASTOR: We begin our Savior’s worship service today in the
name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
ALL: Amen!
OPENING HYMN: #222 [Red Hymnal]
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION OF SINS We come before God recognizing that we are sinful and daily need His forgiveness.
P: We have come into the presence of God, who created
us to love and serve Him as His dear children. But we
have disobeyed Him and deserve only His wrath and
punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and
plead for His mercy.
ALL: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from
conception. In countless ways I have sinned against
You and do not deserve to be called Your child. But
trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me
according to Your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my
sin, and take away my guilt.
P: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By
the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus
Christ, He has removed your guilt forever. You are His
own dear child. May God give you strength to live
according to His will!
ALL: Amen!
II. WE PRAISE OUR LORD
LORD, HAVE MERCY KYRIE

PRAYER OF THE DAY
P: Let us pray . . . through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and
reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Congregation (speaks): Amen.
III. OUR LORD SPEAKS TO US
1ST SCRIPTURE LESSON ~ ISAIAH 55:1-11
Isaiah speaks about the thirst for the Word of God and its worth
compared to everything else in our lives. What “riches” are “free”?
1 "Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you
who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and
milk without money and without cost. 2 Why spend money on
what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will
delight in the richest of fare. 3 Give ear and come to me; hear
me, that your soul may live. I will make an everlasting covenant
with you, my faithful love promised to David. 4 See, I have made
him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander of the
peoples. 5 Surely you will summon nations you know not, and
nations that do not know you will hasten to you, because of the
LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has endowed you
with splendor." 6 Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on
him while he is near. 7 Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil
4 | P a g e
man his thoughts. Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have
mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.
8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways
my ways," declares the LORD. 9 "As the heavens are higher than
the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my
thoughts than your thoughts. 10 As the rain and the snow come
down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the
earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the
sower and bread for the eater, 11 so is my word that goes out
from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish
what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
RESPONSIVE READING OF PSALM 33:11-22
P: Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,
C: the people he chose for his inheritance.
P: From heaven the LORD looks down and sees all mankind;
C: from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth--
P: He who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they
do. No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes
by his great strength.
C: A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great
strength it cannot save.
P: But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those
whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death
and keep them alive in famine.
C: We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield.
P: In him our hearts rejoice,
C: for we trust in his holy name.
P: May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD,
ALL: Even as we put our hope in you!
2ND SCRIPTURE LESSON ~ JOHN 8:12-20
The Pharisees thought they had Jesus trapped in not having more than
His own testimony about Who He claimed to be. However, Jesus
teaches that His Father through the Word of God testifies about Him.
Why does Jesus say “If you knew Me, you would know my Father also?”
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light
of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but
will have the light of life." 13 The Pharisees challenged him, "Here
you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not
valid." 14 Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my
testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am
5 | P a g e
going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am
going. 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no
one. 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not
alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. 17 In your own Law
it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. 18 I am one
who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent
me." 19 Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not
know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would
know my Father also." 20 He spoke these words while teaching in
the temple area near the place where the offerings were put.
Yet no one seized him, because his time had not yet come.
P: Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it!
OUR CONFESSION OF FAITH ~ THE APOSTLE’S CREED The Apostles’ Creed is a summary of Christian faith as taught by the Apostles. We boldly
confess what God has taught us to believe.
I believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under
Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He
descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the
dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right
hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come
to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church, the
communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the
resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

SERMON MEDITATION read/watch sermons and services online at www.fdllutheran.org Jesus said, "…Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!" ~Luke 11:28
2 Corinthians 5:1-10 For we know that if our earthly house, this tent,
is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made
with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this we groan,
earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from
heaven, 3 if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found
naked. 4 For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not
because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that
mortality may be swallowed up by life.
5 Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also
has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. 6 So we are always
confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we
are absent from the Lord. 7 For we walk by faith, not by sight. 8
We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from
the body and to be present (at home) with the Lord. 9 Therefore
we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well
pleasing to Him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment
seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the
body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

1992 - 25 years ago… Eric Williams, Daniel Sullivan, Matthew Eserhut, Rebecca Abel, Robert Shine 2012 - 5 years ago… Deborah Bernthal, Tyler Kern, Christian Heider …these young men and women, in the presence of God and this congregation affirmed their sinfulness and need of Christ’s Word of truth, life, and salvation. They professed their belief in the Triune God -Father, Son, and Spirit and affirmed their faith as a member of His Holy Christian Church as well as a member of this congregation. They professed to hold all the canonical books of the Bible to be the inspired Word of God, as studied in Luther's Small Catechism, to be the true and correct teachings of God’s Word. And all promised to God and the witnesses, to faithfully continue in this pure confession of God's Holy Word, and to suffer all, even death, rather than fall away from it. May we all remember our vow and promise to the Lord today: "I do so intend, by the grace of God!"

Daily Bible Readings for Home Devotions Mon Psalm 47 Jesus’ Ascension was victory parade, homecoming, and coronation—which give import to this milestone in our Church Year calendar. Because Jesus is seated on His holy throne as King over all the earth, He reigns over the nations for our benefit, supervises history so as to advance His Kingdom of grace, and keeps us prepared for our grand reunion with Him and all His saints. Sing praises to God! Tues John 17:17-26 Among the great gifts of God is His Word, the legacy of Scripture, the delivery system by which Jesus imparts Himself to the human race and by which His Spirit does His work of conversion (20). Jesus keeps us close to Him (sanctified) as we abide in His Word. “God’s Word is our great heritage, and shall be ours forever. . . .” Wed Ephesians 4:7-16 Repeat: Jesus returned home when His earthly tour of duty was over—so that from home-base He could supervise His Kingdom, covering the various needs of His people and bringing us up to speed as His representatives during times of controversy (14). Each of us does his part for the common good; do we not (16)? Thurs Isaiah 55:6-11 Although God keeps some of His thinking to Himself, He tells us that He loves us despite our sins (6-7). This in itself validates the superiority of His way of thinking. As rain is superior to irrigation, and seeding is superior to cloning (10), God’s seed of the Word produces superior results in human hearts and lives. Fri John 8:12-20 Since most humans don’t know God well enough to make proper identification of Jesus, He clarifies that He is the world’s sunlight (12), so closely united with the Father that they function as One. Deduction: he who sees Jesus aright sees God aright (16-19). Sat 2 Corinthians 5:1-10 When homes are destroyed by tornado, flood, or fire—that’s bad news. However, it’s good news that when our earthly house, this tent (of our body) is destroyed (by death), we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this temporary housing we groan, aching for the day when we move into permanent housing. Jesus has already paid off the mortgage, the Holy Spirit has delivered it into our hands (5), and so we walk by faith, confident—yes, well pleased—to vacate our body and move in with the Lord (8). God works ahead of the curve. Hallelujah!
