For those who are studying or qualified in a medical or healthcare field, this customized internship will provide you with
unparalleled access to a range of hospitals or clinics in the rural region of Limuru, Kenya. With exposure to departments
such as obstetrics, gynecology, ICU, HIV/AIDS counseling and care, emergency, radiology/imaging, critical care,
orthopedics, oncology, general wards, anesthesiology, and even operation theaters, you’ll gain knowledge and expertise
from the doctors and nurses you work alongside daily.
The key challenges in Limuru, Kenya are inadequate resources, staff
shortages, overcrowding, and lack of infrastructure. Our interns play a
valuable and meaningful role in providing efficient services to patients and
lessening the load of the doctors and staff.
There are four possible hospital or clinic placements, all of which tend to
the wide variety of health issues within Limuru town. Doctors and nurses
work long hours, tending to up to 350 patients from morning into late night.
And although they do incredible work with the limited resources and hands,
it is a large burden to carry.
With limited healthcare facilities in Limuru and a significant need for care,
medical professionals may specialize in a specific skill but find themselves
catering to all sorts of health issues and working in makeshift emergency
units. As an intern with previous knowledge, you will offer much needed
support and skills to the staff.
During your internship, you will work alongside professionals in areas such
as neurosurgery, oncology, anesthesiology, and others, making for a unique
internship placement.
Before you take the steps to become an intern, we believe it is important to ask some
key questions of yourself and us to ensure that this internship is right for you.
Expand upon your current clinical skills and knowledge through practical
experience in a real-world environment.
Gain experience with infectious diseases and emergency situations (e.g. you
will encounter advanced cases of dengue fever, malaria, HIV, tuberculosis,
malnutrition, and cholera).
Assist in the hospital’s emergency unit, which will highlight the challenges of
providing adequate care with limited drugs and technologies.
Challenge your own communication strategies and work with support on your
soft skills such as flexibility, self-confidence, and work ethic.
Widen your knowledge base by being exposed to fields beyond your field of
study.
Learning about a healthcare system with practices, resources, and conditions
that are very different from your current situation.
Gaining experience and insight into different departments (e.g. You can choose
to alternate between surgery, natural or caesarean births, in-patient care, etc.).
Understanding and gaining firsthand knowledge, at a grassroots level, of the
sociocultural issues that affect patients. You will have the option to plan and
facilitate healthcare workshops at local schools and childcare centers in order
to understand Kenya’s unique healthcare needs and educate locals as a way to
improve public health.
Working alongside highly qualified doctors and nurses who are happy to
involve and engage interns in their learning curve. The hospital staff really enjoy
the volunteers and are happy to offer any direction or answer any questions
when needed.
Having a mentor for regular one on one meetings to discuss your personalized
goals, fulfilment of expectations, and provide a grounded view of the issues
facing healthcare in government funded facilities.
Effectively applying your experience to a wide variety of ages, backgrounds, and
cultural backgrounds.
Gaining amazing experience for your CV and a new-found perception of East
Africa and the world.
You will spend 2 - 4 months living on our project base in the rural town of Limuru, Kenya. Volunteers from around the world travel to take part in our short-term
community development volunteer programs, which are centered around public health and education empowerment.
In addition to the hospital work, you will support these community projects by assisting our teams on the ground to provide home based care for vulnerable groups and
create workshops and curriculums to educate the wider community about public health.
You will work alongside Kenyan doctors and nurses at a hospital or clinic, which is assigned prior to your
arrival and based on your field of study, existing skills, and overall interests. You may choose to spend
your time in multiple departments or select one specific area of interest. Your options include obstetrics,
gynecology, ICU, HIV/AIDS counseling and care, emergency, radiology/imaging, critical care, orthopedics,
oncology, general wards, anesthesiology, and operation theaters. Accompanying medical professionals
from Monday to Friday, you will be exposed to a wide range of public health issues found within Sub-
Saharan Africa and gain first-hand experience in patient care, treatment, and preventative medicine.
If you are interested in expanding your medical skills outside of a hospital or clinic environment, let us
know. Interns are able to join the wider African Impact team and medical volunteers in the rural
communities surrounding Limuru, facilitating health-based workshops, as well as participating in home-
based care. Many chronically ill or elderly patients are unable to make it to the local hospital or clinic, so
this type of outreach is extremely important for their welfare. Through this community outreach, you will
get a unique opportunity to immerse yourself within rural Kenyan life, as well as work with a wide range
of cultures and demographics.
While working alongside local doctors and nurses as you
complete your daily tasks, you will be guided and instructed
where needed. This ensures that you feel confident in your
placement and secure in knowing that you are advancing
your skills and experience level in your chosen field(s).
In addition to this, you will have weekly check-ins with an
assigned doctor throughout your internship, ensuring you
get quality mentorship that will provide additional context to
the tasks you have been assigned, and an opportunity to chat
through any concerns or queries.
If you wish to do the internship as part of your course work,
please submit the requirements and placement hours in
advance so we can tailor the internship to suit your needs.
As a requirement for this internship, you must be studying in the healthcare
or medical field, or have graduated with a professional degree from medical
school. Before your arrival, you must submit a CV which will be used to assess
where your placement will be.
Although not all your patients will have the ability to speak English, the English
language is used for all hospital operations and used to communicate
between staff. You will need to have a reasonable fluency level to
communicate during the placement.
You should be motivated and passionate about the placement you are in. As
the hospital setting can be high intensity, we are looking for someone with the
enthusiasm and tenacity to keep up with the demand and contribute towards
staff efficiency
As our interns are placed in professional facilities, we expect a level of
professionalism from them. The internship is designed to boost your career
and personal goals, so we ask that your behavior reflects that.
If you meet all of our requirements and are willing to grow and learn in the medical field, please forward your
CV/Resume to us and request an application form!
