NO SOCIAL VISITS OR ON LOOKING ALLOWED.
Buyers please note attendance at markets MUST be restricted to those
conducting business and only 1 representative per business. Buyers will
be restricted to allow Social distancing – wear a face mask and 2m
between each buyer. Buyers must sanitise on entry to the market, on
exiting and whenever possible. Buyers must not attend with partners,
children or others. Buyers where possible should double up and buy for
multiple clients. Any buyer who does not actually secure a purchase
MUST register with the office after the sale.
Hauliers MUST ensure their name and contact details are recorded on the
entry form for the stock they are delivering.
Anyone who is knowingly ill, showing symptons of the virus, or has an
underlying health issue, MUST NOT attend.

demand for cull and plenty more could have been sold to advantage. Quality
Friesians met a storming trade to 131p/kg from RM & HM Heal with a further 11
selling in advance of 125p/kg. Top headage of £1150 from Knapp Farm Ltd with
others to £1123 from IW Lane & Sons, £1090 from RM & HM Heal and 5 more
selling over £1000. Manufacturing cows also in very strong demand and
urgently wanted. Plain types dear with nothing below 69p/kg. Beef also sold to a
flying trade to 143.50p/kg for a Lincoln from RJ & JC Banwell. Blues to
140.50p/kg from BA & CM Godwin & Sons, Angus to 128.50p/kg from Pittard

CULL EWES (102) MAX £122.50 A good entry of cull ewes with fresh buyers ensuring a flying trade for all entered. Best ewes to £122.50 from Longclose Farm of Milton Abbas with rams to £117 from S & J Wheeler. Best Suffolks over £100 with North Country mules over £90. Welsh ewes to £80, more needed each week.

PIGS (73) AUCTIONEER: WILL WALLIS 07833 453482 A smaller entry forward this week with not many quality sorts on offer and mostly Boars. Trade better than the last sale and some other reports. Times still very difficult for the pig industry, with slow sales in the UK and export non-existent.
FAT PIGS The best heavy cutters to £103 from LE Miller & Son of Bridgwater. Other pens
from the same farm to £101, £94 and £90. Others to £83 from S & S Gould of
Stalbridge. A nice run of Tamworths from Boynton Farms sold well for some
light porker weights to £69 and £67.
STORE PIGS Not many stores on offer this week due to the cold weather. Strong coloured
stores to £56, strong White stores to £46 from J Ware.
CULL SOWS AND BOARS Trade better than some other reports! The best sows to £34 from P & T Reakes. Others to £28 & £29. There is hope that paperwork is now getting sorted and the export starting soon.

CALVED HEIFERS TO £1900 CALVED COWS TO £1400
A firm trade for the right types again this week. A few more older calved cows
on offer which were less sought after than the markets before Christmas,
However, a super entry from CR & YS Bennett attracted good interest for the
younger sorts forward. Top spot was for their B & W “Panache” daughter having
calved in mid Jan and giving 32 litres which peaked at £1,900! Two cracking 4th
calvers from the same consignment sold to a strong £1,400. Finer boned calved
Holstein heifers were more difficult to place with the “best of the rest” selling to
£1,300 from the Tunley family, Cirencester. A run of more traditional British
Friesian type heifers for growing and bulling sold to £535.
Entries for Next week:12 6-7mo dairy youngstock already to hand for next
week.

CALVES (123) Starts 09.30am AUCTIONEERS: CHARLIE COLEMAN: 07494 588 013 Better numbers on the week with trade yet again increasing, calves being sent to Frome are reaping the rewards. Hundreds more could have been sold to advantage.
CONTINENTAL BULLS TO £430/HEIFERS TO £265 Only 1 corker forward which met exceptional demand to £430 for a Blue bull from the Harding family. Trade dearer again seeing Blue bulls sailing past £230 with a steer to £325 from the Osborne family. Smaller sorts still £170+. Blue heifers a stand on trade seeing the best to £265 from the Osborne’s again. Others past £200 from PHG Turner, majority smaller end calves sold well between £140 - £180. Another cracking run of Simmental and Charolais calves from the Hannam family flew seeing a Simmental bull to £270, with smart heifers to £255 and a Charolais to £205. A grand showing of Limousin really ticked the boxes seeing a smart but young bull from PHG Turner selling to £290, with others to £270, £265 and £250 from Peter Turner, who saw medium sized heifers to £185. Another ripping fast trade.
NATIVE BULLS TO £285/NATIVE HEIFERS TO £240 Trade keeps getting dearer and dearer! A marvellous showing of calves yet again in huge demand here at Frome. Topping the day, a quality run from WL Baxandall from the Isle of Wight stole the show seeing bulls to £285 and heifers to £240 and £215. Medium to best flyers past the £230 mark with plenty pushing higher with even smaller end to £170+. Heifers a serious trade seeing nearly all medium to better types pushing and exceeding £170. Smalls a vast improvement on the year with most £70+. Only a handful of Herefords with medium bulls to £160 from Perry Farms and smaller heifers to £80 from JT Jackson.
FRIESIAN TO £142 Nearly 40 Friesian types forward meeting a super trade seeing a large run from Diva Sherborne to a mighty £142, £125 and £115. Another lovely blocky British
Friesian to £115 from RT Millard. A fierce trade with calves in serious demand here at Frome, please keep them coming.

STEERS TO £1478 HEIFERS TO £1186 A Candlemas with a difference, but buyers still keen looking to source cattle
from Frome. An excellent trade from start to finish when many more could have
been sold to the advantage. Many thanks to our vendors, buyers and staff for
supporting Candlemas 2021 at Frome!
FEEDING BULLS Only a few feeding bulls forward but plenty of trade. Older 16 – 18mo bulls saw
Limousin and Simmentals from the Carey family to £818 and £640, other
younger Herefords to £585.
GRAZING COWS Plenty of trade for the grazing cows from Nigel Butler, Newbury seeing prices to
£740.
YOUNG CONTINENTAL On a day which is traditionally for the more forward cattle its not surprising to see
fewer best young continentals on offer. Those that were carrying good shape and
stature sold well as trade was flying at Frome again this week. Another top draw
consignment of 60 12 -15mo cattle from GM & S Silvester & Sons saw their
marvellous dairy bred Simmentals eagerly sought and the first bunches of steers
sold to £1055, £1020 and £935 with heifers at £880. Blue x dairy bred heifers
from the same home topped at £900 and at just 12mo too!! Outstanding single
suckled Limousin cattle from Nigel Butler, Newbury, commanded wonderful
prices which saw 10mo steers to £1,095 & £1,022. More good types from A T
Attwell 9mo at £905 & £810. Plenty of good hard types from M & S Ramm which
all sold with their Limousin steers 10mo at £770 and £772 while heifers from the
same home peaked at £800!! Hard younger SS Charolais 6-8mo from Cutts
Agriculture created keen interest and saw steers to £765. Plenty of younger cattle
for next week at our follow up Candlemas sale, see you then!!

ANGUS A grand show of nearly 40 Angus today sold to a rip-roaring trade! Topping the
day was an exceptional run from Puncknowle Manor Estate whose 14 – 15mo
steers flew to £1475, £1432, £1425, £1390 and £1315 for quality goods.
Regular 4 supporters, RC Few & Sons saw their usual well done solid steers to
£1200. A run of true Candlemas cattle from Sam Foot & team sold exceptionally
well seeing both steers and heifers straight off the chalk ready to work 23 –
27mo selling to £1070 and £980 respectively. As always, a pleasure to welcome
the Silvester family whose trip to Frome certainly paid off seeing steers to
£1085 (13 – 15mo). A marvellous consignment from Rempstone Farm saw
suckler bred 10mo steers to £890 with heifers to £630. Good to see a lovely
team of cattle from the Coleberd family (7 – 12mo) steers to a tremendous
£1070 with heifers to £660. 13mo Dairy bred steers from Manor & Auckland
found exceptional support seeing steers to a wonderful £750, with heifers to
£600. 8mo Angus x steers from the Pope family of Blandford soared to £1070
for a quality beast. Hard outwintered Dairy x heifers from Maria & Andy
Robinson ticked the boxes to £830 at only 18mo. The Flux family of the Isle of
Wight were well rewarded for their trip to see steers to £945 (18mo). A ripping
trade throughout, all grades in exceptional demand, the trip to Frome paying off.
HEREFORD A large entry of Herefords forward today which sold to a super trade for all
entered. A super consignment from Puncknowle Manor Estate enjoyed a flying
trade with 7 bunches of steers over £1300 with the top bunch achieving £1388.
Other fleshed forward Herefords to £1260 from RB Bowditch & Son and £1185
from JB Carter. Younger fleshed Herefords to £1095 from HP & J Flux and
£1080 from D Flux & C Griffin. No forward Hereford heifers entered today but a
lot of those smaller thicker types about. Best to £885 from Queen Thorne
Agriculture, £880 from RB Bowditch, £875 from J Trott & Sons who had others
to £850. A Quality run of true Candlemas Hereford heifers from Andy & Marie
Robinson caught the buyers eyes eventually selling at £805 with others to £800.
Quality feeding steers to £1042 from RB Bowditch & Son sold well to £1042,
with out wintered feeding steers from Andy & Marie Robinson looking well sold
to £1035 with others to £955. Younger, thick Hereford steers to £975 and£960
from T & RE Witchard. Harder Dairy type Hereford steers to £930 from Evershot
Farms, £892 twice from J & S Farming and Isgar & Sons who had others to
£890 and £860. Younger smaller steers to £790 from CT Baker, £720 from CA
Reeves and £695 from J & H Pounder who had others to £670. Smaller fleshed
heifers to £760 twice from BK & A Garrett & Sons and Evershot Farms. Thicker
15 – 16mo heifers from HP & J Flux enjoyed competitive bidding selling to
£745. Younger heifers to £550 from J & H Pounder with others to £545.
FORWARD CONTINENTAL What a marvellous trade! Trade on fire here again at Frome. What has to be the
highlight of the day is an exceptional run of 140 cattle from Mr Morris of the Isle
of Wight who saw his 109 20 – 21mo Blue heifers top at £1100 with others to
£1085 and £1025 resulting in a tremendous average of £986, with Limousin
heifers storming to £1075. Topping the day a quality well shaped 18mo
Limousin steer from the Brett family, who saw others to £1195. Good to see
regulars PW CC & JC Gould’s Limousin steers £1195 (28mo) and heifers to
£1080 (28mo). Well fleshed Dairy x Blues from the Flux family of the Isle of
Wight saw 18mo steers top to a tremendous £1150. A quality run from Queen
Thorne Agriculture soared to £1170 for well done Blue heifers at only 22mo, big
blocky Saler steers from the same home roared to £1120. Very few forward
Simmentals or Charolais today, this said big rangey 22mo Simmental steers
from the Bushell family sailed to £1055. Good to see Colin Virgin here seeing a
Charolais x 19mo to £930. Sweet Charolais and Blonde heifers from Mr Morris
rocketed to £1040 for both. An older but well framed Simmental heifer from the
Pope family sold well to £1186. A lovely Simmental heifer sold well to £1058
from the Garrett family. Forward cattle in big, big demand. Do make use of the
roaring trade here at Frome.

Please note with immediate effect we are having to reintroduce
Drop & Go system. Vendors are asked to unload their stock onto
the loading bays, pass over their paperwork and then leave. Please
ensure any instructions are clearly identified on the entry form.
If you transport Cattle or Sheep, you must read this
and act! The deadline for replies is 25th February 2021
DEFRA have a “Consultation on improvements to animal welfare in
transport December 2020”. Within its proposals Government wants
to:
introduce maximum journey time limits for cattle and sheep of 21
hours, including time spent in market.
introduce minimum post-journey rest periods of 7 days for cattle
and 48 hours for sheep.
require no livestock or horse journeys to be allowed to take
place if the forecast external temperature for the journey is outside
a temperature range of 5-30oC, unless the vehicle is able to
regulate the internal temperature within a 5-30oC temperature
range for the duration of the journey by means of a thermo-
regulation system.
require head room heights for Dairy Cattle of 20cm, Beef Cattle
of 30cm, Sheep of 22cm and Pigs 9cm.
As you are aware Defra and Welsh Government have a
consultation open on “improvements to animal welfare in
transport”.
I am pleased to advise that the deadline for submitting responses
has been extended until 25th February.
It is imperative that all members respond to the consultation, which
