SAFETY SUMMARY

The following safety precautions must beobserved during all phases of test set-up, testhookups, testing, and test-lead disconnects.

Do Not Service or Test AloneDo not perform test procedures or serviceunless another person is also present who iscapable of rendering aid and resuscitation.

Avoid Contact with High VoltageBecause electrical utility stationenvironments contain high voltages andcurrents, there is always the possibility ofpersonal contact with an unexpected lethalvoltage generated by magnetic inductionand/or electrostatic leakage from nearby livecircuitry. When test units are connected todeenergized (“dead”) power lines, regardlessof how short they are, always discharge thelines before attaching any test lead. Becauseof the possibly deadly consequences ofphysical contact with such high-voltage lines, engineers and technicians must always treatelectrical equipment and hookups as though alethal condition will eventually occur. Therefore, no matter how unlikely it mayseem, never assume anything about the safetyof any test setup.

Ensure the safety of personnel by checkingfirst-hand to eliminate all possible hazards!

Do Not Test Inductive Winding ResistanceBecause the DMOM-200 produces testcurrents up to 100 amperes, it is able to buildup large magnetic fields in iron-coretransformers. The interruption of such testcurrents can produce a high voltage spikethat can cause severe injury, death, and/orequipment damage. Therefore, do notattempt to measure the resistance of iron-coretransformer windings (use equipmentdesigned specifically for that purpose).

Do Not Modify Test EquipmentBecause of the added risk of introducingadditional or unknown hazards, do not installsubstitute parts or perform any unauthorizedmodification to the DMOM-200. Toensure that designed safety features aremaintained, it is recommended that allDMOM-200 repairs be done at VanguardInstruments Company or by an authorizedrepair-service. Unauthorized DMOM-200modifications can create unknown safetyhazards and will void the warranty.

Follow Exact Operating ProceduresAny deviation from the operating proceduresdescribed in this manual may create one ormore safety hazards, damage the DMOM-200 or cause test errors; VanguardInstruments Co. assumes no liability forunsafe or improper use of the DMOM-200.

1.0 INTRODUCTION1.1 ApplicabilityThis manual applies to the Model DMOM-200™, part number VIC-9000-100, which ismade by Vanguard Instruments Company.

1.2 Supersedure NoticeThis manual is the basic issue for the ModelDMOM-200 and does not supersede anypublished document.

1.3 General DescriptionThe DMOM-200™ is a Digital Micro-OhmMeter for precisely measuring non-inductiveresistances from 1 micro-ohm to 300 milli-ohms. Applications include resistancemeasurement of circuit-breaker contacts, bushing joints, or any other low resistance. It is field-portable, rugged, and easilyoperated by first-time users having littletraining (its microprocessor-driven, whichautomates many functions). It has a 16-keypushbutton pad for entering test parametersand control functions, and a 4-line by 20-character LCD readout for displayingcontrol-option menus, measured resistancevalues, and related identifying data. TheDMOM-200 has a built-in thermal printer, which prints test data on 2.5-inch-widethermally sensitive paper.Operation requires little more thanconnecting the test leads to an unknownresistance and selecting the test parameters; It requires no calculation of lead-loss, hand-written notes, or the memorizing of detailedroutines. Operators select the test current(10 to 200 amperes) and test time (5 to 60seconds). Measured resistance data isdisplayed and can be printed on the thermalprinter. The measured resistance data canalso be stored (up to 63 records of 96readings each) in FLASH EEPROMmemory; Operators can recall the storedresistance-measurements and related data ata later time for review and printing.

1.4 Functional DescriptionDMOM-200 operation is based on theelectrical relationships described by Ohm’slaw: R=V/I, where I is a known test currentand V is the voltage across the unknownresistance (e.g., breaker contacts). Since thetest current through the unknown resistanceis known and voltage across it is read by themicroprocessor, the resistance is calculatedusing Ohm’s law.The DMOM-200 test voltage is suppliedby a filtered direct-current power supply. Aprecisely regulated constant-current sourcecontrols the current ramps up/down time andthe test current. The dc test current (10 to200 amps) slowly ramps up/down, whichvirtually eliminates magnetically inducedtransients; thus, the risk of inductivelytripping a circuit-breaker’s bus differentialrelay is virtually non-existent.DMOM-200 voltmeter test leads are runseparately from the current-bearing testleads to the resistive load; thus, voltages aremeasured at the terminals of the resistancebeing measured, eliminating error from theI•R voltage drop in the test current cables. The DMOM-200 makes precise micro-ohm measurements possible withoutcalculating compensation for test-current-lead resistance errors.

1.5 Furnished Test Accessories The DMOM-200 is supplied with a powercord, a roll of 2.5-inch-wide printer paper, and one 35-foot test cable set with quick-disconnect plugs to the unit and heavy-dutyalligator clamps to the load. Heavy-dutywelding-type C-clamps (see Appendix B)are also available as optional accessories (C-clamps allow test- lead connection to a widevariety of bushing sizes, bus bars, and manyother junctions that require low-contactresistance).
