When l ow position vacuum pipes are connected they must not be pinned together , thuswhen uncoupling is being performed the pipes wi l l par t automatically.

PROTECTION OF SIDINGS TEMPORARILY IN THEPOSSESSION OF THE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT.

Whenever an Engineering Depar tment requires t o take possession o f the whole or anyany por tion o f a siding i t must be closed to traffic i n the fol lowing manner:—

I. Arrangements f o r possession m ust be agreed between the Engineering Depar tmentman-in-charge of the work and the local Traffic Supervisor and they must reach a clearunderstanding as to what is required and the time of the possession.

2. W her e the whole siding can be closed to traffic, the points must be set to prevent theentry of vehicles, and clipped and padlocked in that position. I f the points are workedFrom a Signal Box or ground frame, reminder appliances must also be used.Where only a por tion o f a siding requires to be closed t o traffic, a suitable baulk oftimber must be securely fastened across the rails and a red danger signal showing i nthe direction from which vehicles approach must be provided.

3. W her e necessary, arrangements must be made t o pr otect both ends o f the siding.4. I n the case of mechanised hump shunting yards the local Traffic Supervisor must advise

the Control Tower Operator or person in charge of the hump, and any other Inspectorsor staff affected, where necessary, at both ends of the yard. T he points must be set toprevent vehicles enter ing the affected siding and reminder appliances must be used.The points leading t o the affected siding must also be cl ipped and padlocked and ared Danger Signal exhibi ted. I n the case of double-ended sidings, this must be doneat both ends.

5. T he times the possession is taken and withdrawn must be recorded.6. I n the case of sidings used for repairing vehicles or for loading or unloading traffic, orleading t o a goods shed, should i t not be possible t o close the siding, i n addi tion t o

observing the provisions of Rule 112, clause (a) , a Handsignalman must be appointedwho must place detonators on the rails at a sufficient distance from the men at workin the siding or goods shed, and also give effective warning o f the approach o f avehicle or vehicles.

Street Level Crossing, the staff in charge of the train must first close and padlock the gatesacross the pedestrian subways and then operate the tw in red flashing road signals as fol lowsto control road traffic:—

( I ) Turn master switch w i th key provided t o energise road signal controls.(2) Press 'Start' plunger to cause road signals and warning bel l t o operate.

When the train has passed over the level crossing:—(3) Press 'Stop' plunger to terminate road signals and warning bel l operation.(4) Restore Master switch.(5) I f the 'Stop' plunger fails to stop the operation of the road signals and bells—restore
