I am excited to serve as your faculty host for this course. Your entire nine-day expe-rience is my responsibility, though it’s the many others that will make it successful. Entrepreneurship & Innovation is designed to teach basics concepts and terminology from a theoretic perspective, offer practical techniques from an applied real-world perspective, and share the tricky and specific how-to’s in China. The course is con-ducted with a focus on participant interaction, both among the participant-group and with lectures and company-hosts. I hope that you do join use for this course and that you have endless positive memories from it. Perhaps most importantly, it is my personal mission and the primary objective of the course to make sure that we fully prepare you for doing business with and within China – as you will see and learn, it is a very complex and dynamic environment!

Peking University

Founded in 1898, Peking University was originally known as the Imperial University of Peking. It was the first national university covering comprehensive disciplines in China, and has been a leading institution of higher education in Chi-na since its establishment. It also served as the highest administration for education at the beginning of its founding. In 1912, the university adopted its present name. At the end of the 20th century, the Chinese government put Peking University at the top of its agenda for promoting higher education, with the aim to build a world-class university in the 21st Century.

Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School (PKU Shenzhen), primarily focused on full-time graduate education, is an integral part of PKU’s progression toward becoming a world-class university. PKU Shenzhen’s goal is to build a world-class international PKU campus in Shenzhen, a pioneer city leading China’s Reform and Opening-Up Policy, while adhering to the academic principles of “New Frontiers, Interdisciplinary Studies, Applied Research and Interna-tional Standards.” PKU Shenzhen is a graduate education institution comprised of eight schools: School of Electronic and Computer Engineering; School of Chemical Biology & Biotechnology; School of Environment & Energy; School of Urban Planning & Design; School of Advanced Materials (in-establishment); HSBC Business School; School of Trans-national Law; and Humanities & Social Sciences.

Peking University HSBC Business School was founded in 2002 with the intent of advancing PKU’s involvement in global finance research and establishing a first-tier business graduate program in southern mainland China. PHBS enrolled its first class in 2004, and began accepting international students in 2009. Since then, the school has ex-panded to offer Full-Time Master’s programs, Dual-Master’s programs with several partner universities, an Executive MBA program, and numerous Executive Development programs. On August 30th 2008, HSBC recognized the sig-nificant potential of the business school and awarded the school with a 150 million Renminbi grant. As a symbol of appreciation for HSBC’s generosity, the school officially changed its name to Peking University HSBC Business School. Currently PHBS enrolls over 800 Master degree students, over 100 MBA students, more than 350 EMBA, and oversees 1,000 EDP professionals. The school strives to provide a comprehensive, transnational educational experience, and is constantly expanding upon the research and international exchange opportunities for its students.
