What an amazing week of dressage.

Last month, the NSW Dressage Championships returned to AELEC, Tamworth after an 8-year absence and what an event it

was! Over 200 riders and 250 horses competed over the 5-day event from preliminary all the way through to the FEI levels.

The 2019 event saw increased numbers in AOR classes over most levels and we were extremely pleased with the support of the

FEI classes – the open PSG class had a record 32 entries! It was great to see a growing number in the pony classes as well –

particularly the lower classes offered great competition.

Thank you to all competitors for supporting the event and to those travelling from further afield; it was great to see you and we

hope you enjoyed your time at Tamworth – please visit us again ���� There was a great QLD contingency and I am slightly

disappointed to say that they took out the State of Origin Challenge winning 4 of the 5 days!! Come on NSW, we can do better,

bring on 2020!!

For many of the Organising Committee it was their first time being involved in an event of this scale and I would like to thank each

and every one of them for their dedication, determination and passion to make this a great event for competitors, officials,

sponsors, traders and spectators alike – I’m 100% confident you’ve achieved to do this, congratulations and thanks again team!!

We wish to sincerely thank all the officials – an integral part of any competition – thank you for giving us your time and expertise!

To the judges whom we asked to use the Paperless Scoring System (a new experience for many); we are very sorry for the stress

this may have caused at times but at the same time we’re extremely proud of being leaders in our field and embracing new

technology. The experiences we’ve encountered and the feedback that was able to get back to the Nominate team was invaluable

and will enable the System to be continually upgraded.

We introduced some new aspects to States this year – some which worked well and others not so much ha ha. The Grand Prix

Freestyle was moved to the Sunday morning, starting at 10am. This and the VIP High Tea which was held offering people an

opportunity to watch the Freestyle from a fully catered ringside seat, was a great success.

The local FM radio station came and broadcasted live on the Friday afternoon which was also very well received – thank you

Katherine Farrell and Zanna Northam for representing our sport at ‘The Huddle’ our weekly radio sport show!!

The BBQ on the Saturday afternoon was well received but the live band didn’t attract any interest which surprised me a lot as

they’re very good…. Having the traders down near the stables with greater access to the competitors (and crew) was another great

move.

All traders reported they’d had a great turnover even with the terrible weather on the first couple of days. The 5-day duration

proved very long and we will attempt to bring this back to 4 days next year.

Last but definitely not least, we wish to thank all our fabulous sponsors for supporting the event. We couldn’t do it without you,

particularly as we continuously aim to keep the event affordable for all competitors, ensuring as much as possible to create an

even playing field. Our most sincerest gratitude goes out to Sally Hart from Horse First who as the 2019 Naming Right sponsor

was just fabulous to work with!!! Thank you Sally for believing in our vision, providing support at every opportunity and your

unstoppable enthusiasm throughout the 5 days ���� ���� Our ‘gamble’ on doing things a bit different and offering the Trainer Rugs

has definitely paid off as all Champions are absolutely over the moon with their beautiful Thermatex rug!

Tamworth Dressage Club will be hosting the NSW Championships again in 2020 from Thu 27th

to Sun 30th August at AELEC – HOLD THE DATE & see you then

Wrap-up

What a way to finish of the 2019 training competition season.A fabulous weekend of dressage, good company in a friendly atmosphere.

Saturday was an extra special day for our club!

We love and appreciate our amazing TDC team so it was with absolutepleasure that our hostess with the mostess Margaret Finucane was

presented with lifetime membership.

We think it is safe to say that anyone who has attended a TDC event overthe past 10 years would have had the pleasure of experiencing Margaret's

caring and welcoming nature.

Margaret's contribution to our club has been unwavering and without herdedication many of us would most likely have gone hungry and thirsty.

It is with a sad heart that we also announce that Margaret will be hangingup her apron as hostess for the club at the end of 2019. She is an

extremely busy woman with many family and friends are now seeking moreof her time and culinary delights.

We can't thank Margaret enough for donating her time to our club and wewish her all the very best for the future.

Foal Care

1. DRENCHING- Internal Parasites

Foals should receive their first drench between 8 to 12 weeks of age, using a benzimidazole (i.e.

oxfenbendazole or fenbendazole) based, dual-active (i.e. also contains pyrantel or morantel) drench. This

should be repeated every 8 to 12 weeks thereafter, alternating between the benzimidazole dual-active

drench and an abamectin-morantel dual active drench, up until 9 months of age.

From 9 months of age onwards the horse should be drenched every 8 to 12 weeks with a ‘mectin’ (i.e.

ivermectin or abamectin) based, dual-active (i.e. also contains pyrantel or morantel) drench, up until 2

years of age.

To determine the most effective drench class to be used on your farm, manure worm egg counts should

be performed by your veterinarian every 2 to 3 years.

It is important from an individual horse’s perspective to maintain an appropriate internal parasite

management program, however from a whole-herd perspective it is also crucial to follow a program

similar to the one outlined above to prevent the development of drench resistance.

A program of regular drenching using the most efficient drenches is the single most important aspect of

worm control.

2. VACCINATIONS

First foal vaccinations are advisable at the age of 12 weeks.

AGE VACCINATION

12 WEEKS - Equivax 2 in 1 (Tetanus & Strangles)

- Salmonella

- Duvaxyn (Equine Herpes Virus)

14 WEEKS - Equivax S (Strangles)

16 WEEKS - Equivax 2 in 1 (Tetanus & Strangles)

- Salmonella

- Duvaxyn (Equine Herpes Virus)

22 WEEKS - Duvaxyn (Equine Herpes Virus)

6 MONTHS - EquivH (Hendra Virus)

Booster Vaccinations

- 6 monthly: Equivax 2 in 1 (Tetanus and Strangles)

- 12 monthly: Salmonella and Duvaxyn (Herpes) & Hendra

Things to remember when considering vaccinations:

- These diseases can be severe and fatal;

- They are reasonably common;

- Protection following vaccination is generally excellent provided regular boosters are given;

- The cost of the vaccination is very cheap compared to the cost of attempted treatment for these

diseases and the value of the horse.

3. EXTERNAL PARASITES

The main external parasites are

- Lice

- Biting insects

- Ringworm

Foals should be routinely observed for these parasites during routine handling and day to day

observations.

Lice

- Lice infestations can cause itchiness, roughness of coat and loss of condition.

- They are most common in winter when the coat is longer.

- They can be controlled through clipping and then washing with an insecticide such as Gamma Wash or

Asuntol.

Biting insects

- Mosquitoes, sand flies and stable flies in the search for blood will bite the foal. This may result in a lump

that can become itchy, sore and infected.

- Controlled using insect repellents

Ringworm

- Usually displays a circular pattern that is hairless or has short broken hairs

- Lesions may spread to any part of the body

- All equipment that comes into contact with the fungus can carry and spread it.

- Isolation protocols are necessary to prevent further spread.

- It is potentially a zoonosis

4. FOOT/HOOF CARE

Basic foot care should begin soon after the foal is born. (We generally recommend that a farrier attends

the foal for an assessment within 10 days of being born. If that foal has angular limb deformities, a farrier

may need to visit sooner.)

** Regular trimming by a farrier is essential.**

5. DENTISTRY

- Usually not necessary on a foal until the permanent teeth have appeared (their first visit from the dentist

should be around 12 months old)

- Exceptions may include those foals with over or under shot jaws.

A thorough general health routine is key to prevention of unnecessary treatment and disease. If you are

unsure what is the best fit for your foal, contact your local veterinarian to assist with a health plan that

suitable for your foal
