Putting together a publication that can meet theneeds of the readership can be quite challenging. But based on the phone calls and emails we receivedin the weeks after the Spring Issue was mailed, wecan only conclude that we are meeting that chal-lenge. The most common word used was “Wow!”

We appreciate the warm reception of the newformat but it is mainly due to the dedication of thevolunteer staff of the DIGEST and you, the reader.

Our readers also indicated that they enjoy read-ing about and connecting with former colleagues; achance to renew acquaintances. It enforces that theMP Corps may be small but it is still large enough tolose touch with our past comrades.

The DIGEST staff is looking at how we can keepyou, the reader, connected through the DIGEST, thewebsite and now our Facebook page. These are all‘soft’ ways to stay connected but the best way torenew acquaintances is through our yearly Re-unions.

This year marks the 36th Reunion of the RMPOand Little Rock plays host. The volunteers, headedby Carroll Dunn, have put in many hours to ensurea great venue. Jane will be attending the Reunion asJohn has work commitments.

As with anyReunion, someretired MPs won’tbe there and thisyear our own LTCPeter Slusar willbe one. Pete is onour TAPS list thisissue, having losthis battle with pancreatic cancer. He will be missed.

Last issue we ran a story of CW3 Ken Hamilton,a new member, and sad to say, also on our TAPS listthis issue. Ken, too, lost his battle with cancer.

On May 5 John attended the wreath laying at thePentagon to honor those who perished in the 9/11attack. “It was nice to see several old friends whowere fellow survivors of the attack and still work inthe building, despite their injuries; as well as meet-ing the Vice President, Mrs. Biden, and SecretariesGates, Napolitano and Rumsfeld.” As we approachthe 10th Anniversary of the start of this War on Ter-rorism we give special thanks to those Soldiers andFamiles who sacrificed so much and so often to en-sure our safety.

Through our Reunions and The DIGEST, we areable to reconnect with one another.

Thanks for a great publication. And yes, I turned 70 and am re-tired – retired. I take my ordersfrom my five grandkids.

Arnie DaxeCOL (Ret)Burke, VA

I have truly enjoyed receiving theDIGEST over the years. I retiredin 1965 after over 22 years ofservice with a magnificent groupof officers and men. Just nevertook the time to acknowledge thegood work of those who so dili-gently put the publication to-gether. I’ve moved fromWashington State in my now 88th

year to be with two daughters andtheir families.

Dale DormanMAJ (Ret)Rexburg, ID

(COL Pat Lowrey) My heartfeltthanks to you for your warm andvery kind words about mybeloved husband, Nick, who willforever be in my heart. I amgrateful for your support and forbeing in touch with me at thisvery sad time. Please accept theenclosed contribution in appreci-ation of a great DIGEST.

My sincere thanks to all who sentme prayers and expressions ofsympathy in memory of mybeloved husband, Nick. My familyand I will forever miss him.

Mrs. Jenny GreenNorthville, MI

Thanks for stepping up in relief ofPat and Peggy Lowrey. The serv-ice they provided, and which younow provide, is greatly appreci-ated. I wanted to provide an up-date for the next printing of theDIGEST.

After 24 moves in my 32 yearArmy career, I though I could set-tle into one place in retirement. But alas, my current employer feltotherwise. I have been trans-ferred from the Honolulu(Hawaii) Field Office to the Hous-ton (Texas) Field Office of the Fed-eral Bureau of Investigation. I amthe Administrative Officer forHouston where the office is threetimes larger than Honolulu withthree times the challenges. ButVickey and I are glad to be here

and will settle in quite nicely.

I have included a donation inhonor of all former members ofthe 25th Military Police Company. We will be holding our annual re-union in Branson, MO this year,22-25 September. Anyone want-ing details can contact Dave Wil-son at [email protected].

Thanks again for all you do for themembership. Take care.

Brigitte and I were sorry to misslast year’s reunion, but at the timewe were on a 69-day Asia/Aus-tralia cruise. It was a trip of a life-time. Every port we stopped at,

the people greeted us with enthu-siasm and friendliness. It is un-fortunate that one of the ports westopped at (Sendai) seemed totake the brunt of the tsunami. Somuch has changed in Saigon/HoChi Minh City, that it was hard torecognize any of the downtownarea. It was so modernized. All inall, we’d do it again. That is, if wehadn’t adopted a rescue dog.Warm regards and our wish foryour success as the new Editors ofthe DIGEST.

Heartfelt appreciation for all thatyou do to unselfishly serve ourRetired MP Officer (and spousal)community. Also, please note ourtemporary new address. On April27th, our home at Silver Lakes inCalhoun County, Alabama was de-molished by a direct hit from an F-4 tornado – part of the epicdestruction that was visited uponour state that day. Nearly 300lives were lost. Sharliss and Iwere among the very fortunate. Not a scratch. Doing fine; but, nodoubt, there ARE easier ways toliquidate!

During last fall when I was involved as a keycommittee member and photographer of the 3rdInfantry Division 4-day reunion, also held in CrystalCity mid-September, followed by the RMPO reunionend of September, I didn’t think much about the creditsI was given by the President of the Society of the ThirdInfantry Division, US Army, at that reunion.

I am a member of the 3rd ID Society, because I was aScout Platoon Leader with the 3rd Armored Rifle Bat-talion, under the 3rd Infantry Division in Wildflecken,

Germany during 1961-62.

CWO Harley Evans wasmy second in commandwhen I commanded the

2d CID in Seoul Korea in 1961.Harley was one of the very firstpolygraph operators and certainlywas one of the very best of them. Hetold me this tale which has intriguedme ever since.

When the Japs hit Pearl Harboron Dec 7th 1941 he was a Pfc atScofield Barracks. During the con-fused aftermath of the Jap attack, after he had manned foxholes on thebeaches and then returned to bar-racks, his company was called outand formed on the parade ground. His Battalion Commander and aNaval Office joined his CompanyCommander. The Company Com-mander told the men that the Navyneeded a man who knew the BlankBlank (I have forgotten the name)diesel engine. Harley said “Well Ihad been a soldier long enough toknow that it was not a good idea tovolunteer for anything, but, hell wewere at war.” So Harley raised hishand.

He was hauled immediatelyinto the Orderly Room. The NavalOfficer, who wore an eagle on hiscollar and thus outranked even theBattalion Commander, wanted toknow what Harley knew about theBlank Blank diesel engine. Harleytold him that the farm machines onthe North Carolina farm he wasraised on were powered by the

Blank Blank diesel. He had oper-ated, maintained, and even one win-ter assisted in re-building one. Aftersome questioning the Naval Officertold the Battalion Commander: “this is the man we need.”

Harley was ordered to go packhis duffle bag for a permanentchange of station and report back asfast as he could do it. He was methauling his duffle and loaded into agray sedan with the Naval Officer.

They made a fast trip to the har-bor where they pulled up alongsidea cargo ship. There the Naval Offi-cer pointed at a small vessel carriedon the stern of the ship. The nameon the smaller vessel’s stern wasOna Ona. He told Harley that hewas going to be the captain of thatNavy ship, the Ona Ona. Accordingto the traditions of the Navy rankdidn’t count. Being captain of a shipwas what counted. He would be ad-dressed as Mr. Evans, anyoneaboard that Navy ship would beunder his command. He was to re-move all insignia from his uniformand that his khakis would be uni-form enough.

Harley protested that while hehad done a little fishing on Able-marle Sound he never handled aboat nearly the size of the 35 footOna Ona. Well, the Naval Officertold him they could teach him howto handle the boat but nobody knewhow to handle the Blank Blankdiesel. He was therefore sailing that

night for ChristmasIsland where theywere going to buildan airbase so planescould be refueled andflown to Australiafrom HI.

A swabby wassummoned to carry Harley’s dufflebag aboard. The Navy Captain andHarley were piped aboard and takenimmediately to the ship’s captainwhere Harley was introduced as Mr.Evans, the captain of the Ona Ona.It was obvious that the ship hadbeen waiting for the captain of theOna Ona and would set sail imme-diately. He as told to take a bunk inthe officer’s quarters and eat in theofficer’s mess. That was a dizzy-ingly fast promotion from infantryPFC.

Harley told me that no onecould possibly have had as good aWorld War II as he did.

His job was to pull and pushbarges from ships anchored at seainto a lovely lagoon that requiredcrossing a reef on six feet of waterat mean low tide with the tug OnaOna that drew five feet of water.Even though he could eat at theseabeas’s messhall he almost exclu-sively requisitioned food for hisship and ate and lived aboard her.

The Ona Ona had a full galley,a refrigerator he kept full of beerand a freezer he kept full of icecream. Once in a while a cargo shipwould stop after being in the warzone and Harley would trade icecream and beer for Jap souvenirs. Then when a ship came from HI orthe mainland he would trade thesouvenirs for ice cream and beer. When the airfield constructionswere completed aircraft fuel and

supplies had to be barged ashore forthe constant flights to, and some-times from Australia. Back andforth across the reef he went withdays and nights spent aboard his lit-tle empire in a lovely tropical la-goon. He was a soldier living out aterrible war on loan to the Navywho had promoted him captain of aNavy ship that did what it was de-signed to do without orders or otherchicken shit.

It was just too good to be true.

But then, tragedy struck. A timeof abject terror descended. A planecarrying World War I flying aceEddie Rickenbaker, famous to everyboy of the 1920 - 1930 era, wentdown into the sea between Christ-mas Island and Australia. The clos-est Navy ship to the area was theOna Ona. The captain of the OnaOna was ordered to leave immedi-ately and sail at her flank speed of

eight knots in the general directionof Australia to the area to search forEddie. The captain protested that hecould not navigate out of sight ofland. A hundred miles out onto thebroad Pacific Ocean he would becompletely lost..

No matter. Go. Now. Search forEddie Rickenbaker. We will fly overyou and radio navigating instruc-tions to you. The radio had a rangeof ten miles.

Imagine seeing your island sinkinto the horizon as you motor off ona compass heading into the reachesof the Pacific in a 35 foot tug whosetop speed was eight knots andwhose fuel consumption at that ratewas quite unknown. The orderswere to search until relieved. No es-timate was given as to the when ofrelief. Even a mild Pacific stormwould have the Ona Ona rolling andpitching so badly that the captain

would be seasick and incapacitated. Then there were the nights alone allall alone on a wide and empty sea.

Thankfully, after twenty onedays in rafts at sea Eddie Ricken-backer was rescued by others. TheOna Ona was safely guided back tothe lagoon. Harley did not say howmany terrified days the Ona Onawas at sea on an endless mercilessocean; however, to be captain of theOna Ona never again felt as sub-limely comfortable.

I never did learn how MrEvans, captain of the Navy ship OnaOna, came to be CWO Evans one ofthe best investigators and polygraphoperators of the Army CID.

Hope you like that little yarn. Ilove it. It is difficult to rememberthat it was told to me fifty years ago.For that reason I must be forgivenfor any inaccuracy in my telling ofit.
