    The *asic cheme

The &asic TO system is ery sim!le. There #ill &e t#o one ga! linemen and t#o t#o ga! linemen

in the four do#n lineman system. There #ill also &e one of these to each side so that the defense has

    a t#o ga!!er and a one ga!!er on each side of the foot&all. /o# let's loo at ho# you determine

    #hich DL !lay #hich techni$ue.

The sim!licity of the system lies in the lac of s!eciali%ation. 4 used to &e a coach that eery !layer

had to hae a 6s!ecial6 7o& or $uality &ut hae $uicly found out that this leads to a large teaching

!ro&lem. !eciali%ation though it sounds cool can and #ill frustrate you as a coach. The more

generic you can &e #ith your coaching the more you can accom!lish #ith your !layers. This is the

old tri!le o!tion coaches a2iom of 6ulti!licity through sim!licity6. 4n DL terms this means haing

t#o ends and t#o tacles not a strong end #ea end nose and tacle. *oth the tacles and ends

should &e interchangea&le meaning that these !layers should &e a&le to !lay &oth the strong and #ea

    sides of a formation e$ually.

O so no# that the lac of s!eciali%ation has &een addressed #e can no# focus on the first !art of

!laying DL alignment. The alignment in the TO system is ery im!ortant. The one ga! lineman

aligns in a 6looser than normal6 alignment. o for the DE this #ould mean that if he #ere to

normally align in a fie techni$ue he #ould align in a seen techni$ue 3een if there #asn't a tight end

!resent). The t#o ga! lineman aligns ery tight almost head u! on the OL. o if a DE #ere to &e in a

fie techni$ue he #ould align #ith his nose on the outside eye of the offensie tacle 3OT). The

reasons for this ariation in alignment #ill &e discussed later.

    The #ay the

    TO system

    #ors is ery

    sim!le. For the

    interior linemen

    if you are in a

    t#o techni$ue or

    higher you t#o-

    ga!. 4f you are

    in a t#o-eyetechni$ue or

    lo#er then you

    one-ga!. o in

    our &ase oer

    front the

    #easide tacle

    is in a one

techni$ue and he is a one ga!!er meaning he #ill more than liely align in the 8 ga! 3#ider than a

normal one techni$ue) and is only res!onsi&le for the 8 ga! getting u!field and #recing haoc. On

the strong side the strong tacle is in a three techni$ue so he is a t#o-ga!!er. The t#o-ga!!er #ill

    align much tighter than a normal three techni$ue and #ill utili%e the t#o-ga! techni$ue. 8ll the DE's

hae to do is as themseles this sim!le $uestion 64s the ga! inside of my alignment acant or

occu!ied 3you can use o!en or closed either one #ill suffice). 4f the ga! is o!en then the DE is a t#o-

    ga!!er. 9o#eer if the ga! is closed then the DE is a one-ga!!er 3as sho#n a&oe).

The one ga! lineman is $uite sim!ly summed u! in one !hrase...!ass rusher. :hen you coach the one

ga! lineman the main goal is to get off the foot&all get u! field and disru!t &locing schemes ia

    !enetration. /o# 4 no# many of you die-hards are going 6Oh yeah #ell 4'll 7ust tra! your ass6.

:ell it isn't $uite that easy ho#eer that is the main focus of coaching the one ga! !layer. The one

ga! !layer should aoid &locs and get u! the field. 4f the !layer is the one techni$ue thin

!enetration and disru!tion. The DE is sim!ly turned loose and allo#ed to rush around the corner.

    /o# 4 no# #hat you are thining ho#eer there are &loc reactions.

The one ga! DL is ery sim!ly !ut to maintain the ga! they are aligned in. The reaction to the &ase

reach and !ass set are all the same get u! field and rush around the corner. The only thing that

changes on the do#n &loc is the angle of attac that the DL #ill tae to the foot&all. :hen the OL

do#n &locs the one ga! DL #ill get into 6chase6 mode and come flat do#n the LO. 4t does notmatter ho# the one-ga!!er handles the tra! &loc. :hen in dou&t he is to s!ill if he can ho#eer if

he &o2es this is not a !ro&lem either. That is the &eauty of the system let the one-ga!!ers go and

#rec haoc. That's it; The one ga! techni$ue is ery aggressie and ery sim!le #hich allo#s you

to teach &oth the one ga! and t#o ga! techni$ues to your DL.

1 ga! DE reaction to &ase reach and !ass set

    1 ga! DE reaction to do#n &loc 3chase)

    The t#o ga!!er is also eery &it as sim!le as the one ga!!er. The t#o ga!!er is only a t#o ga!!er on

!a!er meaning he aligns in one ga! &ut is res!onsi&le for another. :hen coaching the t#o ga! DL

" ga! DE s. &ase reach and !ass !ro &locs

    " ga! DE s. do#n &loc

The only t#ea to this scheme is that of the t#o ga! DE. The t#o ga! DE against a !ass set #ill still

&ull rush &ut #ill not #or inside until he's on the same leel as the foot&all. This allo#s this DE to

still ee! contain on the =* if he #as to roll or scram&le to the t#o ga! DE's side. Once the DE sees

the foot&all and can react to it then he maes his inside moe.

:hen the defense aligns regardless of the front the DL no# their assignment &ased on the status of

their inside ga!. 4f their inside ga! is o!en then they are a t#o ga!!er. 4f the inside ga! is occu!ied

then they are a one ga!!er.
