At Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center , your home-educated students will love discovering the sights and sounds of the 17th and 18th centuries while learning about their nation’s history. And you will love the variety of curriculum-based education programs offered for a range of grade levels – all taught by trained museum educators. Home-educator programs will be offered on March 1, 2, 5 and 6, 2007, with advance reservations. Each program features a one- hour classroom component for students, followed by a guided tour for students and their families of the museums’ outdoor interpretive areas. All programs address Virginia and United States standards of learning for history and social studies. Students can enroll in one of three programs at each museum, according to grade level. All programs are available all four days. Jamestown Settlement Visit re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village and James Fort, replica 1607 ships, and a riverfront discovery area. Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 2 - Living With the Indians Students handle and analyze clothing, bone tools and pottery of the Powhatan Indian culture. Program times: 9:15 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Grades 3-6 - Cultures at Jamestown Students compare and contrast the Powhatan Indian, English and African cultures that came into contact during the 17th century. Program times: 9:15 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Grades 7-12 - Voyage to Virginia Students learn about the 1607 voyage to Virginia by FOR HOME-SCHOOL STUDENTS at JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT & YORKTOWN VICTORY CENTER exploring period navigational tools. Program times: 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Yorktown Victory Center Visit the re-created Continental Army encampment and 1780s farm. Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 2 - Colonial Life Students examine tools and materials used on a small Virginia farm to explore life of a typical Tidewater farming family. Program times: 9:15 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Grades 3-6 - Revolutionary Virginia Students analyze primary sources and reproduction artifacts to learn about lives of ordinary 18th-century Virginians. Program times: 9:15 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Grades 7-12 - Life of a Private Students explore a Continental soldier’s haversack, clothing and weapons to relate to the experiences of people during the American Revolution.
