NOTES

• One of the responses to the social model of health came at the World Health Organization’s first International Conference on Health Promotion held in 1986 in Ottawa, Canada.

• Came up with some guidelines that would help organisations and key stakeholders incorporate health promotion ideas into their strategies, policies and campaigns.

• Until then, there was no framework to guide them in the development of health promotion strategies. The resulting framework was known as the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, often referred to as the Ottawa Charter.

HEALTH PROMOTION

• Health promotion, as defined by the World Health Organization, is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. Health promotion therefore focuses on prevention rather than cure and uses the causes of disease as the starting point rather than diseases themselves.

The Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion was developed from the social model of health ...

Underlying the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion are a number of prerequisites for health.

These are the fundamental conditions and resources for health and include: peace • shelter• education • food • sustainable resourcesincome• social justice and equity. • a stable ecosystem

PRINCIPLES

Advocate – good health is a major resource for social, economic and personal development, and an important dimension of quality of life.

Political, economic, social, cultural, environmental, behavioural and biological factors can all favour or harm health. Health promotion aims to make these conditions favourable, through advocacy for health.

PRINCIPLES

Enable – health promotion focuses on achieving equity in health. Health promotion action aims to reduce differences in current health status and ensure the availability of equal opportunities and resources to enable all people to achieve their full health potential.

This includes a secure foundation in a supportive environment, access to information, life skills and opportunities to make healthy choices. People cannot achieve their fullest health potential unless they are able to control those things that determine their health. This must apply equally to women and men.

PRINCIPLES

Mediate – the prerequisites and prospects for health cannot be ensured by the health sector alone. Health promotion demands coordinated action by all concerned, including governments, health and other social and economic sectors, non-government and voluntary organisations, local authorities, industry and the media

PREZI – PRIORITY

• The Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion identifies five priority action areas for health promotion to improve the health of populations. These are:

• build healthy public policy• create supportive environments • strengthen community action• develop personal skills• re-orient health services.
