WARRNAMBOOL’S GEOLOGY: A NOT SO SOLID PAST - DR JOHN SHERWOODThursday 19 August 6.30pm

The city of Warrnambool sits on rocks built up over the last million years or so - a very short time in geological terms. A marine embayment has slowly infilled. As it did so the region has been rocked by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, giant megafauna roamed the area and have left their footprints as evidence and some parts of the city have been flooded by sea levels higher than now. At times Warrnambool has not been a coastal location at all but many kilometres inland as sea levels fell. Evidence of all these changes, and of the presence of people is preserved because of the wonderful self-cementing limestones of our area.
