4 AU Football

The 2006 Aurora University football team has a muchdifferent make up than last season’s Spartans who finished5-5 overall and 5-2 in the Illini-Badger Football Conference.A much younger Spartans team will have to come togetherunder second-year coach Rich Duncan.

The keys for the 2006 Spartans will be the replacementof nine defensive starters, effectively establishing the rungame and making plays on special teams. Duncan believesthis will be a much smoother process because this is his sec-ond year with many of the players. “Our kids will be morecomfortable and they know what is expected of them,” stat-ed Duncan.

The defensive side of the football will see many newfaces getting playing time, that Duncan and DefensiveCoordinator Rob Erickson expect to be up tempo and forcepressure. With the loss of many key seniors from the 2005season, Coach Duncan looks for players to fill the void.Brandon McIntosh returns to AU for his senior season atdefensive end and will anchor the defensive line along withsophomore defensive linemen Harvey Van Cleave III andMarcus Goedken. Juniors John Dahman and DominikChandler and freshman Pat Funk look to pressure opposingquarterbacks as well.

Senior linebacker Chris McAndrew, who moved to line-backer after playing the three previous seasons at runningback, and junior linebacker Brent Baker (19.0 tackles, onesack, one forced fumble), will be a key player in the defen-sive midfield. Freshmen Michael DeVries and DaveGesiakowski will vie for playing time harassing opposingoffenses. Senior Austin Deer (39.5 tackles) will lead the sec-ondary with sophomore Matt Meyer; Juniors Eric Scott andNick Gniedziejko and freshman Tony Musaraca will join tocause havoc in the defensive backfield along with Deer.

Like the defense, the offense is looking for players tograsp opportunities and breakout seasons. With the loss ofsenior quarterback Andrew Hornung due to injury, Duncanwill depend on a trio of freshmen quarterbacks to run theAU offense. Matt McGary, Matt Nelleman and David Manny

all will compete to see a good amount of playing time inorder to find the right man for the job. Protecting thesethree young quarterbacks will be a strong group of offensivelinemen. In the mix for a starting job are returning startersseniors Nick Koch (All-IBFC First Team) and Mike MurphyJr.. Also, sophomores Ryne Haberkorn, Don Robinson,Casey Schmit and freshman John McBurrows look to helpgive time to the young quarterbacks in the passing game.

The offensive linemen will open holes for a solid groupof running backs. Led by junior Brent Harner (63 yards on29 attempts). Duncan believes the run game will be a hugefactor to this year’s team and will establish the physical styleof play AU has been known for over the years. Harner will bejoined by sophomore Dan DeBosschere and a group offreshmen looking to prove that AU has a balanced attack onoffense. Those freshmen include Cody DeGrush, RyneReder and Rick Howell. Senior Nick Paxson (159 yards on30 attempts) will return as the Spartan’s fullback. JuniorAaron Harmon (3 catches for 70 yards) will assume the roleof Tight End.

The group of young quarterbacks will be throwing to agroup of talented wide-receivers. Senior Danny Mackinson(234 yards on 19 catches), junior Travis Paro (switching overfrom running back) and sophomore Corey Cowan will dotheir best to get open for their young quarterbacks. Alsolooking to help in the receiving game, are freshmen RyanMilus, Zach Sitter and Aaron Snyder.

The Spartans special teams will have a new look as wellin 2006. Sophomore Mike Lund will assume the puntingduties and he will be joined by senior James Unger (19-27pats). Freshmen Nate Rapp, Matt Kletti and Andrew Price allare battling to handle the kickoff and field goals duties forthe Spartans.

The 2006 Spartans will look to turn their youthful exu-berance into an Illini-Badger Football Conference champi-onship and another trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Eckhart Hall

Aurora University traces its origins to the 1893 founding of a seminary in the small town of Mendota, IL. Though established initially to prepare graduatesfor ministry, the institution soon adopted a broader mission and moved to anew campus on the western edge of the nearby community of Aurora. With thischange came a different name and a growing enrollment. In 1985, the institutionwas rechristened Aurora University.

In 1992, the Aurora and George Williams College traditions blended when thetwo institutions entered into the affiliation agreement that paved the way for amerger eight years later.

Today Aurora University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association to award degrees at the baccalaureate, master’s,and doctoral levels. The institution enrolls approximately 4,000 degree-seekingstudents a year on its Illinois and Wisconsin campuses.

The Aurora campus offers undergraduate and graduate programs throughthe College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education and the College ofProfessional Studies (including the Dunham School of Business, School ofNursing, School of Social Work and School of Health and Physical Education.)The graduate programs offer areas of specialization, leading to master’s degreesin business administration, mathematics, recreation administration, teachingand social work, as well as a doctorate in education.

At AU, academic programs are enhanced through learning opportunities. TheDunham Scholars Program incorporates service learning and extracurricularactivities into its business curriculum. The Honors Program offers studentsadvanced coursework, innovative seminars and participation in special events.May Term is a three-week program offering opportunities to study abroad, research a science topic on campus or travel to Chicago to explore the city’s cul-ture.
