1. Opening Remarks Erik Coleman with the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention provided opening remarks and

started the meeting at 10:02 a.m. Erik just recently returned from the U.S. Virgin Islands where he was helping their Public Health

agency in responding to Hurricane Maria, he briefly spoke to this before introducing the meeting with a little bit of background for everyone. He read off the FSTF mission and lead introductions around the room.

o Note: Those on the webinar could not hear around the room introductions. Consider optimizing webinar/meeting integration regarding room discussion for those who are not there in person.

2. Regulatory Updates Natalie Adan provided a legislative update for FY2018, the legislators will be in session starting

in January for 40 days. She also summarized the current and ongoing grants the GDA has had and thanked DPH for all their support with our work on the standards for manufactured food and retail food.

Brandon Sauceda provided an overview of what the Georgia Food & Feed Rapid Response Team is for the first-timers/new people attending the meeting.

Galen Baxter talked about some of the things DPH has been working on this past year, and will be working on in the coming year. They are currently in year three of the retail food safety standards (VNFRPS), working to increase industry outreach, which has turned in series of webinars with GRA, working on helping retailers create emergency operating plans prior to a natural disaster, lot of movies filming here in GA, GA now enrolled in NEARS.

Hope Dishman gave a highlight overview of outbreaks in Georgia since the beginning of 2017, including both foodborne and animal related. Many were collaborative responses across several agencies in terms of the investigations, sampling, testing, etc.

4. GaFSTF Grant Update Georgia received its task force grant in Fall 2015 so we are now in Year 3 (final year) of the grant

with $10,000 to use for the year for task force mission related goals. Approximately 150 people attended the 2017 2nd Annual Food Safety & Defense Conference this

past year. The public presentations have been shared on the task force website here. Last year, Tori Stivers applied for Task Force Travel Grant funds and was able to attend

HACCP training in Connecticut, as well as the International Association of Food Protection’s annual conference. Jason Reagan, Jessica Badour, Craig Nielsen and Natalie Adan were all able to use some additional travel funds to support their attendance to the Association of Food & Drug Officials of the Southern States annual conference in August 2017.

There is funding available for travel grants again this year. Travel grants are available for regular members to use for any food safety/public health related conference, meeting, seminar, or training, or even to other states’ task force meetings.

o Note: This information needs to be added to the website, but is also routinely shared with the members via email updates.

5. Group Discussion and Updates from Members: Volunteers needed! The task force is establishing two workgroups, please email Jessica to sign

up for either. Those who signed up at the meeting will be getting an email soon about next steps. Details:

i. GaFSTF Event Planning Workgroup – beginning ASAP, through 2018 events (dates TBD) with phone conferences every 1-2 months for discussion. Volunteers will work with the GaFSTF Executive Committee and assist in planning all FY18 events, which will likely include two (2) events; a day-long food safety and defense conference and a regulatory training. Each member of the group should be prepared to provide feedback and ideas for potential speakers and topics for a conference, and be prepared for task assignments relating to event planning for any FY18 events and/or trainings of the task force.

ii. GaFSTF Website & Mobile App Development Workgroup – beginning ASAP through the close of the current grant year (08/31/18), with meetings TBD by workgroup members. Volunteers will review the current GaFSTF website pages and mobile app content, and provide recommendations for updates, content changes, page development and other general suggestions for improvement. The final work product will be an outline of all suggestions, with written development of any new content, to include updated links, new resources, events/trainings, etc.

Elizabeth Andress introduced herself; she is with UGA’s National Center for Home Food Preservation. She may have upcoming webinars some of our membership may be interested in; she will share that information when it becomes available.

GaDPH is planning a tabletop training exercise in Feb. 2018. While the topic of the training is currently top secret, invitations to participate will be coming soon.

6. Save the Dates: Dates for the 2018 3rd Annual Food Safety & Defense Conference are still to be determined –

save the dates will go out as soon as we have a confirmed date/location. Volunteers are welcome for a small planning committee (see above, in Updates & Announcements) to help guide the process for the next Food Safety & Defense Conference. If you would like to be a presenter or help plan the next conference or meeting, please reach out to Jessica and Priya.
