sectors, to source organic produce in
Wales.

The environmental benefitsOrganic farming makes a positivecontribution to mitigating climate changeand protecting the environment by reducingpollution and supporting biodiversity:• Organic crop rotations and fertility building
restores soil fertility and organic matterand compensates for carbon losses dueto cultivation. In the long-term organicfarming increases soil carbon storage;
• Organic farms do not use syntheticfertilisers, pesticides and herbicides andso significantly reduce fossil energyinputs per hectare and reduce thegreenhouse gas emissions associatedwith their manufacture;
• Organic livestock are mainly grass-fedfrom the farm’s own resources, withreduced reliance on feeds producedelsewhere;
• Research studies have confirmed thepositive impact of organic farming onbiodiversity. This is a result of reducedfertilisers and pesticide use, diversecropping systems and positive hedgeand field margin management onlowland farms.
Why source Welsh organic food?The Welsh organic food market is growing strongly in terms ofproduction, processing and marketing. Demand for Welsh-grownorganic food is increasing among consumers, retailers, hospitalityand food service sectors and public procurers.
This directory aims to help commercial buyers, particularly inthe sustainable food procurement and hospitality catering sectors, by providing information about Welsh-based suppliersof organic food and the range of products they offer.

Cynllunnir systemau hwsmonaethda byw organig i leihau straen a phwysauhaint ar anifeiliaid, gan leihau’r angen iddefnyddio gwrthfiotigau a chyffuriau eraillyn rheolaidd mewn modd ataliol.
Ansawdd bwyd ardystiedig Mae cynhyrchu a phrosesu bwyd organigyn cynnig bwyd o ansawdd da mewn moddcynaliadwy, gan osgoi defnyddiogwrthfiotigau, bioladdwyr, hyrwyddwyr twf aGMOs. Bwyd masnach deg ac organig dilysMae ffermio organig wedi bod ar y blaen oran datblygu safonau cymdeithasol uchel argyfer cynhyrchu bwyd, yn enwedig trwyfentrau Masnach Deg ac Amaethyddiaethwedi’i Chefnogi gan y Gymuned.
Ar y cyd â’i bartneriaid yn Ardal yr Iwerydd,mae Grwp Llywio Canolfan Organig Cymruwedi mabwysiadu Siarter RAFAEL, alofnodwyd hefyd gan y Gweinidog dros yrAmgylchedd, Cynllunio a Materion Gwledigyn 2006. Mae’r siarter yn diffinio bwyd dilysfel bwyd lleol, cynaliadwy, pobl-ganolog,nodedig, o ansawdd da, iach, diogel acolrheiniadwy. Yng Nghymru, y rhai sy’nymgofrestru â’r Siarter yw cynhyrchwyr,proseswyr a dosbarthwyr organig, cwmnïaubwyd SME (mentrau bach i ganolig) acymgeiswyr yng nghystadleuaeth Bwyd aDiod Cymru: Gwobr y Gwir Flas sydd wediennill gwobrau a chlod.

High standards of animal welfare Organic farming standards prohibitintensive factory-farming methods andorganic farming has high standards ofanimal health and welfare. The standardsrequire producers to ensure that animalhousing systems are welfare-friendly;permanent housing is prohibited andoutdoor, free-range systems are the norm.Organic livestock husbandry systems aredesigned to reduce stress and infectionpressures on animals, reducing the needfor routine preventive use of antibiotics andother drugs.
Certified food qualityOrganic food production and processingdelivers quality food in a sustainable way,avoiding the use of antibiotics, biocides,growth promoters and GMOs. Though it isdifficult to be definitive, authoritativecommentators accept that organic food islikely to contain lower residues ofagricultural chemicals than non-organic.
Organic food production and processing islegally defined. Any food product marketedas organic within the EU must be certifiedaccording to the provisions of EURegulation 2092/91.
Organic products are subject to a system ofinspection and certification that operatesthroughout the European Union and coversall imports from third (non-European
Union) countries. Traceability provides astrong basis for consumer trust and inmany cases this is reinforced by the use ofshort food supply chains and closeproducer-consumer links.
Fair trade and authentic organic foodOrganic farming has been at the forefrontin developing high social standards for foodproduction, particularly through fair tradeand Community Supported Agricultureinitiatives.
Along with its Atlantic Area partners, theOCW Steering Group has adopted theRAFAEL Charter, which was also signed bythe Welsh Minister for the Environment,Planning and Rural Affairs in 2006. TheCharter defines authentic food as: local,sustainable, people-focused, distinctive,high quality, healthy, safe and traceable. InWales, organic producers, processors anddistributors, SME food companies andWales Food and Drink ‘True Taste’ Awardwinners and commended entrants sign upto the Charter.

Cynaladwyedd amgylcheddol ehangachMae dulliau cynhyrchu organig yngynaliadwy yn amgylcheddol o ran eudefnydd o adnoddau a’u heffaith arfioamrywiaeth ac ecosystemau. Gall fodmanteision o ran milltiroedd bwyd yn sgilgynhyrchu’n lleol, ond nid yw cysyniad‘lleol’ wedi’i ddiffinio’n glir ac mae’n gallucynnwys systemau ffermio dwys lleol hebnodweddion cynaliadwy eraill. Mae ffermioorganig yn cynnig ‘lleol plws’ – yr hollfanteision amgylcheddol eraill y tu hwnt i laio filltiroedd bwyd.
Mae Cynllun Gweithredu i Brydau YsgolionLlywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru, Blas am Oes,yn nodi bod gan fwyd organig fanteisioncynaladwyedd amgylcheddol eang.Cydnabyddir y rhain yng NghanllawiauComisiwn yr UE ar Gaffael Gwyrdd, CynllunDatblygu Gwledig Cymru 2007-2012,adroddiad grwp 2020 ar Ffermio Cynaliadwy
a’r Amgylchedd a Strategaeth AnsawddBwyd LlCC. Cefnogir cynhyrchu bwydorganig fel cynllun amaeth-amgylcheddol yngNghymru ac mewn mannau eraill yn yr UE.
Effaith gadarnhaol yn gymdeithasol acyn economaiddMae caffael cynaliadwy cyhoeddus yncyfrannu i amcanion polisi cymdeithasol aceconomaidd, lle y gall caffael sy’ncanolbwyntio ar y pris yn unig amharu aramcanion polisi eraill megis deiet, iechyd adatblygu gwledig. Mae ymchwil yn dangosbod cyllidebau bwyd y sector cyhoeddussy’n cael eu gwario ar gynnyrch lleol acorganig yn gallu cynhyrchu manteisionariannol hirdymor yn yr economiranbarthol, gan helpu i gynnal ac adfercymunedau lleol. Wide environmental sustainabilityOrganic production methods areenvironmentally sustainable both in termsof resource use and their impact onbiodiversity and ecosystems. There may befood mile benefits from local produce, butthe concept of ‘local’ is not well definedand can include local intensive farmingsystems with no other sustainablecharacteristics. Organic farming offers ‘local plus’ – all the other environmentalbenefits beyond reduced food miles.
The Welsh Assembly Government’s ActionPlan for School Meals, ‘Appetite for Life’,points out that organic food has wideenvironmental sustainability benefits. Theseare recognised in the EU CommissionGuidelines on Green Procurement, the‘Welsh Rural Development Plan 2007-
2012’, the 2020 Group report on‘Sustainable Farming and the Environment’and the WAG ‘Quality of Food Strategy’.Organic food production is supported as anagri-environmental scheme in Wales andelsewhere in the EU.
Positive social and economic impactSustainable public procurement contributesto social and economic policy objectives,whereas procurement that focuses only onprice can cut across other policy objectivessuch as diet, health and rural development.Research indicates that public sector foodbudgets spent on local and organic producecan generate long-term financial benefits inthe regional economy and help to maintainand regenerate local communities. Organicfarming employs more people and a higherproportion of younger people. Many organicfood businesses add value to farm productsthrough local processing.
Research demonstrates that organicfarming is associated with short food supplychains and has a distinctive socio-economicfootprint. It contributes to the accumulationof social capital – co-operation andinnovation, vibrant communities, skills andknowledge networks.
The proof of the pudding ...Organic food is championed by leadingchefs, and many consumers agree thatorganic food tastes better – the way foodshould. The strength of the food tourismmarket is recognised by the WelshAssembly Government who are developingan Integrated Food Tourism Action Plan for
Wales, aiming for closer links across thewhole food chain in Wales, and raising itsprofile as a quality food destination.
Working together with the Welsh AssemblyGovernment and the Welsh Touristpartnerships, Organic Centre Wales hasproduced two organic food trails: ‘Where to

dau lwybr bwyd organig: Lle i Fwyta a Lle iAros – un i ganolbarth ac un i dde-orllewinCymru. Mae’r arweinlyfrau’n rhestruffermydd organig, tai bwyta sy’n cynnigbwydydd organig a llety o ansawdd da.Mae’r ddau arweinlyfr wedi’u dosbarthu iGanolfannau Croeso yng Nghymru a thuhwnt. Gellir lawrlwytho’r llwybrau o wefanCanolfan Organig Cymru.
Yn ôl arolwg Boddhad Ymwelwyr agynhaliwyd gan Fenter Ansawdd TwristiaethCeredigion, roedd bwyd lleol yn bwysig i45% o ymwelwyr â’r ardal. Felly, ni allprydau o fwyd sydd wedi’u gwneud âchynhwysion lleol ac organig ond gwellacanfyddiad a phrofiad yr ymwelwyr hynny ymae bwyd yn wirioneddol bwysig iddynt.
Twf cynhyrchu organig yng NghymruRhwng mis Rhagfyr 2005 a Rhagfyr 2006cynyddodd arwynebedd y tir sydd wedi’irheoli’n organig yng Nghymru 11.5%.Mae’r twf hwn yn uwch na phob gwlad arallyn y DU. Yn ôl pob arwydd fe ymddengys ybydd yn parhau gyda bron 11,000 hectar odir amaethyddol Cymru yn dechrau cael eidroi’n organig rhwng mis Ionawr 2007 amis Chwefror 2008. Rheolir dros 78,000hectar o dri hyd at safonau organig ardraws 710 o ddaliadau organig ledledCymru. Ar ben hynny, mae maint ffermyddorganig ar gynnydd ac erbyn hyn mae’rcyfartaledd dros 110 hectar o’i gymharu â94 hectar ym 1994.

Prosesu a chyflenwiMae prosesu organig yn cynyddu. Wrth ialw defnyddwyr am gynnyrch organig oansawdd da barhau i dyfu, cynyddodd ynifer o broseswyr organig cofrestredig yngNghymru o 112 ym mis Rhagfyr 2005 i125 ym mis Rhagfyr 2006.
Mewnforion a chynnyrch allan o’r tymorGall cyflenwyr organig Cymru gyflenwinwyddau maethlon, uchel eu hansawdd naellir eu tyfu’n lleol neu nad ydynt ar gael yndymhorol. Mae Partneriaeth Ardal yrIwerydd Interreg IIIB RAFAEL yn hyrwyddomasnach rhwng rhanbarthau gwledigymylol Ardal yr Iwerddon gan sefydlurhwydwaith o gyflenwyr fel y gall prynwyrsydd â diddordeb fynd at ffynonellaucynnyrch organig, ardystiedig sy’n cael eifasnachu’n deg o Ogledd Iwerddon, De-orllewin Lloegr, Ffrainc, Sbaen a Phortiwgalyn ogystal â Chymru.

Eat and Where to Stay’ – one for Mid andone for South West Wales. The guides listorganic farms, restaurants with authenticfoods and quality accommodation and havebeen distributed to Tourist InformationOffices within and outside Wales. The trailscan be downloaded from the OCW website(www.organic.aber.ac.uk/organics).
According to a Visitor Satisfaction surveycarried out by Ceredigion Tourism QualityInitiative, local food was important to 45%of visitors to the area. So meals made fromlocal and organic ingredients can onlyimprove the perception and the experienceof those visitors to whom food reallymatters.
Growth of organic production in WalesBetween December 2005 and December2006 the area of organically managed landin Wales increased by 11.5%. This rate ofgrowth surpassed every other nation in theUK and indications are it seems set tocontinue with nearly 11,000 hectares ofWelsh farmland entering organic conversionbetween January 2007 and February 2008.More than 78,000 hectares of land aremanaged to organic standards across 710organic holdings throughout Wales.Furthermore, the average organic farm sizehas been increasing and is now over 110hectares, compared to 94 hectares in 2004.
Increased salesRecent OCW market reviews found thatsales are up in each of the food sectors.Organic milk and dairy products haveshown strong growth with considerableinnovation in product development.
The Welsh organic meat market is currentlyworth £2.4 million and is growing at 3% ayear. The farm-gate value of Welshproduced organic fruit and vegetables isaround £1.8 million.
Processing and supplyOrganic processing is increasing. Asconsumer demand for high quality, organicproduce continues to grow, the number ofregistered organic processors in Walesincreased from 112 in December 2005 to125 in December 2006.
Imports and out of season produceWelsh organic suppliers are able to supplynutritious, high-quality product lines thatcannot be grown locally or are seasonallyunavailable. The RAFAEL Interreg IIIBAtlantic Area partnership is promoting tradebetween the peripheral rural regions of theAtlantic Area and is setting up a suppliernetwork so that interested buyers cansource organic certified, fair-traded producefrom Northern Ireland, South WestEngland, France, Spain and Portugal aswell as Wales.

From a best value perspective, organic fooddelivers on a range of public benefits, islegally defined, and is widely available.
Organic regulation provides a legal basis forcontract specification and overcomes theissue of Single Market rules in publicprocurement.
Although organic food is often associatedwith a premium price consumer market,opportunities exist to reduce costs throughshort food supply chains and bulkpurchasing. Buyers can investigate whetherorganic food can be sourced affordably aspart of a supply mix.
Organic Centre Wales (OCW), working withValue Wales and the Welsh AssemblyGovernment, can help to develop the use of
organic food, providing guidance onsourcing of supplies, regulatory issues, andopportunities for cost reductions.
Organic and local food has already featuredin school dinners in many schools throughthe demonstration school mealsprogramme (part of the RAFAEL project).Some organic suppliers also have contractswith public procurers to supply schoolmeals in Wales on a regular basis.

RAFAEL (Renaissance of Atlantic FoodAuthenticity and Economic Links) is an EUInterreg IIIB project, with nine main partnersfrom different regions of the Atlantic Area of Europe.
The overall aim of RAFAEL has been toenhance the identity and economy of theAtlantic Area through the concertedpromotion of authentic food.
For the RAFAEL partners, authentic food is:• local;• people-focused;• sustainable and organic;• distinctive;• high quality;• healthy;• safe;• traceable.

Partners include both public and privateorganisations and each partner has startedto develop a network of authentic foodsuppliers within their region. The regionsinvolved are South West England, Wales andNorthern Ireland (UK); Galicia, Zamora andAndalucía (Spain); Alentejo and Tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro (Portugal) and Brittany(France). RAFAELThe RAFAEL Interreg IIIB Atlantic Area partnership is promotingtrade between the peripheral rural regions of the Atlantic Areaand is setting up a supplier network so that interested buyerscan source organic certified, fair-traded produce from NorthernIreland, South West England, France, Spain and Portugal aswell as Wales.
