AC & D Farms is a family-owned farm that startedsmall by selling garden pro-duce at the Capital CityPublic Market in Boise. In2013 they opted to serve thelocal community by opening aseason, 7-day a week farmstand at the corner of NW1st Avenue and Highway 95in Fruitland. The largestmajority of the produce isgrown on the farm and theyalso support neighboringfarms and fruit growers. Out-of-season crops that arebrought in are only grown inthe U.S.

Chapter Food Pantry, FourRivers Healthy Communityand Community in Action.The Four Rivers CommunityGarden (FRCG) was estab-lished in 2008 by dedicatedcommunity members work-ing for garden education, toimprove the local food supplyand to address hunger. Since2008 the garden has taughtmany folks about gardeningand annually donates hun-dreds of pounds of produceto the Next Chapter FoodPantry. The volunteers arean enthusiastic and busygroup of folks committed toteaching and learning, contin-ued improvement in the gar-den, and increasing fresh veg-etable production for theNext Chapter Food Pantry.As an incentive for volunteer-ing, garden workers can alsoharvest a portion of the freshproduce for home use. Thegarden is a peaceful and pro-ductive place to spend time,to learn, and has become areal asset to our local com-munities. Volunteers anddonations are welcome.

In 2009, a garden was startedin the vicinity of the PayetteHead Start School. There wasa vacant lot that was hard tomaintain so the CommunityGarden was begun. It was theintent to have it available toanyone in the community thatwanted to help with a gardenthat would benefit the low-income of the area. The gar-den called Share the Harvestis managed by the staff of thePayette County Center withvolunteers to help with themaintenance. To sign up as avolunteer, please go to thePayette County Center. Aportion of produce that isharvested is sold through alocal farmers’ market. Thesefunds are used to purchasematerials, seeds, and plantsfor the garden for the follow-ing year. The goal of WICAPis to have the garden be com-pletely self-sufficient and usedby the community.

Food Pantries are a place whereindividuals and families in need(those who are at or below 185%of the Federal Poverty Limit) canaccess 3 to 5 days of food suppliesto supplement other householdresources. They are typicallystaffed by volunteers (often associ-ated with one of the area's manyfaith-based organizations); openmultiple times during the monthand, at their best, work from a phi-

losophy of "Manage the Product,Not the People." Many Pantriesthroughout the region are "shop-ping-style" programs that offerhouseholds the variety and selec-tion of what they can really use(and what family members willactually eat), while substantiallyreducing waste. Most Pantry sitesallow access up to 12 times peryear (once a month). While eachof these organizations encourages

open communitywide access,Pantries should be contacteddirectly for questions regarding IDrequirements and service bound-aries. (Note: Programs supplied byOregon Food Bank do not requireSocial Security information as apre-requisite for receiving foodassistance.)
