1. TAVETA TOWNIt’s in Taveta Town during the first world war of 1914-1918 that the first shot was fired in anger in the early morning of 15th August, 1914. This first shot ignited the land action of the East African Campaign that saw the British face off with the German Schutztruppe leading to a 20 month occupation of Taveta by the Germans.

It was also in Taveta town where The Taveta Chronicle was first published in 1895. This was the first periodical published in the East African main-land and the second newspaper to be printed in the British and German spheres of East Africa.

2. SALAITA HILLThe Germans fortified Salaita Hill in Taveta when they invaded British East Africa on 15th August 1914. They then organized raiding parties out from Salaita to the Uganda Railway. This was 11 days after the declaration of war in Europe. This was a strategic site for the Schutztruppe, making Taveta the gateway into North Eastern German East Africa.

3. COMMONWEALTH WAR GRAVESThe county has four Commonwealth World War 1 Cemeteries located in Voi, Maktau and Taveta Towns.TAVETA MILITARY CEMETERY 177VOI CEMETERY 136MAKTAU INDIAN CEMETERY 15TAVETA INDIAN CEMETERY 1

4. MAKTAUMaktau is a small town located halfway between Voi and Taveta. In 1916 it accommodated over 20,000 British Empire troops and claims the first airfield in East Africa. Only the Maktau Indian Cemetery remains as evidence of the crucial role this small town played during the First World War.

5. MASHOTI FORTMashoti Fort is located within the Sarova Taita Hills and Salt Lick Wildlife Sanctuary on a ridge linking Mashoti Hill to the Taita Hills, some 50 meters off the Voi Taveta Road. The fort was built by the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in late 1915 complete with trenches. The site is well eroded today but clearly visible and easily accessible.

Dress Code

Mombasa is a multi-cultural city with a relatively relaxed dress code, but the majority of residents are Muslims who adhere to certain dressing standards, especially for women who wear a buibui, a long black dress that covers their body and a hijab. One should avoid transparent and overly revealing clothing.

Swahili people

Mombasa has a diverse cultural make-up, from Arabs to Indians, Af-ricans to Europeans, but majority of the local people are Swahili speak-ing Muslims, so learning some basic words in Swahili might come in very handy. Although English is widely used, you may also find some peo-ple who can speak Chinese, Spanish, German or Italian.

Greetings

Most social interaction begins with a greeting. It’s advisable to shake hands when greeting rather than hugging.

Photography

Photography of the State House, government institutions and military installation is prohibited. One should always seek permission from locals before taking their pictures.
