Keeping it Royal

What a time to be producing a Wedding Supplement. Kate and Wills are about to get hitched and couples throughout the world

will be looking to the royal duo for fashion tips, do’s and don’ts and hints on how to tactfully swerve the less popular relatives. We know as much as everyone else (i.e. very little as Folio went to press) but that’s not going to stop us having a good old guess, as well as look at

the variety of Royal Wedding novelties around.Royals or no, the centrepiece of any Folio supplement is our wedding

shoot where we call on Bristol and Bath’s most innovative suppliers to produce a wonderful look for two budding models. This season we’ve gone for the “classic contemporary” theme, and all participants have pitched in wholeheartedly with ideas and expertise. Thanks especially to photographer Matt Lincoln for his hard work and creativity in interpreting the theme and, of course, all the suppliers who gave their creative best. Also to Hannah Chapman who worked devilishly hard on the day.

Elsewhere, Rachel Nott gives us a countdown to gorgeousness, Niki Whittle looks at fashion for brides of all shapes and sizes, while Melissa Blease tours many of the West’s most glamorous wedding venues.

We hope you’ll keep this supplement throughout the planning of your nuptials and use it as an essential guide for suppliers and ideas.

The VenueThe fabulous location for our photoshoot was Bristol’s Goldbrick House, where all rooms are licensed for weddings/civil ceremonies, and everybody’s big day is unique. “We don’t have wedding ‘packages'," explains weddings manager Katherine Minton. “What the couple want depends entirely on them. We do all sorts of different parties, from champagne teas and wedding breakfasts to afternoon barbecues.” And with a host of different rooms for evening entertainment, the house-party feel means cosy corners for intimate chats as well as dance-floor spaces.

Goldbrick’s couples tend to want to “break the mould a bit”, says Katherine. “They’re looking for a relaxed, informal venue, but with high standards of service and food. A beautiful, boutique-style wedding, modern classic with a vintage twist, rather than a typical hotel-style wedding.”

Bespoke food-and-wine tastings ensure you get exactly what you want, all supported by Goldbrick’s two AA rosettes. “Menus are modern British, but people don’t always want to go for the norm. Our talented chefs happily accommodate each client, and cater for vegetarians and vegans. Menus offer lots of choice, so guests can order on the day – none of that messy pre-ordering. We love the challenge!”Goldbrick House 69 Park St, Bristol. Ffi: 0117 945 1950, www.goldbrickhouse.co.uk

T he unique collection of boutique-styled rooms at Bristol’s Goldbrick House provided the perfect backdrop for our spring wedding photoshoot. We chose a

classic-contemporary theme for the day with two different ways of interpreting it. The unique collection of boutique-styled rooms at Bristol’s Goldbrick House provided the perfect backdrop. Our beautiful bride wore a vintage lace dress in ivory taffeta, her hair styled into elegant sophistication with a modern twist. The groom wore an understated brown suit contrasting with an exuberant floral shirt. Later, with her hair styled more softly, she changed into a contemporary strapless oyster dress in dolce silk, while he was all in white. Our dream team of local experts provided subtle jewellery, stunning modern flower arrangements and a simply gorgeous cake to add those all-important finishing touches.

The restaurant at Goldbrick House can be configured as an intimate ceremony venue.

The DressesOur gorgeous dresses, both by Essense of Australia, came courtesy of Bristol wedding shop Anne Harding. All Anne Harding dresses are available to hire as well as to buy – an approach that’s proving hugely popular in the current economic climate.

The empire-line vintage-style lace dress (£1,099) is made from ivory taffeta with pewter lace overlay and lace cap sleeves. “It’s such a lovely shape when you see it on,” says owner Kerri Foster, who took over from Anne a few years ago. “The lace is really fashionable, with its fitted style and cap sleeves.”

The second dress – an oyster colour in dolce satin (£1,299) – brings a more contemporary look: “Strapless and A-line, there’s a more modern twist, with pintucks through the front of the skirt,” says Kerri. “The Essense range is fantastic. With the couture fit and attention to detail, they’ve been a world leader in bridal fashions for 14 years now.”

With a Designer Day with Essense (www.essensedesigns.com) coming up at Anne Harding on Saturday 2 April, you can preview the new collection for yourself, with discounts on the day.Anne Harding 90-92 Shirehampton Rd, Stoke Bishop, Bristol. Ffi: 0117 968 3074, www.anneharding.com

The PhoTograPher“For me, it’s about preserving people’s memories years after the event,” says our photographer, Matt Lincoln. “I want people to look back at the photos and instantly be taken back to that time, that feeling, that emotion.”

Matt takes what he calls “a photojournalism approach. I cover the day as it is, without controlling people and without dictating. It’s about capturing moments in a dynamic and creative way, while also putting my own style on things. I always meet and talk to people beforehand, to find out what they want and get a sense of where they’re coming from as a couple. I want to produce pictures that reflect their personalities.

“Most people usually want a certain amount of formality, such as group family shots – they keep parents and grandparents happy! I try to do this very efficiently, spending perhaps 45 minutes on it, so that it doesn’t eat into the day too much and people aren’t getting bored – because that will come across in the pictures.”

Matt offers a comprehensive range of different packages to suit all budgets, from albums to coffee-table books. “I can tweak things to suit different people almost indefinitely!” he laughs.

As one of his many satisfied couples, Faith and Richard, put it, “I cannot thank Matt enough for his professional, personable service and the truly beautiful and creative photographs he took for us to remember our wedding day.”Matthew Lincoln Photography Ffi: 0117 230 1974, 07929 765929, www.matthewlincolnphotography.co.uk

Our more vintage look sees Adam in a two-tone grey and brown suit with a fabulous floral shirt and tie from Marc Wallace, while Angela wears an empire line lace dress in ivory taffeta from Anne Harding.

The hair“I work instinctively,” says Sam Bell, owner and lead stylist of Bristol’s Hair at 58. “You get a feel for the bride and your creativity starts to happen. Here, I’ve gone for elegant sophistication with a contemporary twist, a vintage style mixed with an Audrey Hepburn look. It complements the lace on the dress – and it’ll stay up all day!” For the incredible shine, Sam used natural Aveda products - Brilliant Spray On Shine and some Air Control spray.

The most important thing with a wedding, says Sam, is the whole look. “For the hair, you have to take everything else into consideration, too. Each wedding is completely individual and should cater for the needs of the bride rather than following any particular trends. And it’s really important for the bride to understand exactly what her hair is capable of. Our model Angela’s hair is extremely thick and long – we were trying not to be too theatrical, hence the classic look.”

For the second look Sam has taken back sections down to create a looser, softer, more natural and modern style. “It’s more intimate and romantic, as the dress is quite structured and intense.”Hair at 58 58 Cotham Hill, Bristol. Ffi: 0117 973 7793, www.hairat58.co.uk

The JewelleryIf you’re looking for something special to wear on your big day, then look no further - Diana Porter Contemporary Jewellery have everything a bride could hope for. Not only do they cater for classic tastes and brides who want something more unique, but they also re-work old jewellery.

“It’s quite fitting having an engagement ring with your grandmother’s diamond in it,” says Diana. “Especially in this climate, people are being a bit more economical with what they spend.” By re-working an existing item, the bride can have something new for their wedding day, combined with the memories and sentiment of an heirloom piece.

When choosing the jewellery for our photoshoot, subtlety was the order of the day. “I chose each piece to try to complement the dresses,” explains Diana, “rather than distract from them.” Among the pieces chosen were a Diana Porter 18ct white gold and five white diamond ring (from £1,234) and a Diana Porter 18ct white gold and eight white diamond ring (from £1,442). The Make-up“Brides want to look natural,” says beauty therapist Kirsty Patch from Hair at 58. “You want to be the perfect vision of yourself on the day. To decide on eyeshadows, I looked at eye colour, skin tone, the colour of the flowers. Because Angela is dark-skinned, I wanted her cheeks to stand out, so used a ‘pinkier’ tone. And the same with her lips – I wanted to keep things on the natural side, not use something too bright.” Aveda’s naturally derived, botanically based, ethically sourced products – renewable, sustainable or organic - fitted the bill perfectly.Hair at 58 58 Cotham Hill, Bristol. The FlowersFrom table decorations to scenic displays, buttonholes to bouquets, flowers represent freshness and joy - the emotional foundation of any wedding. These beautiful displays were provided by Bristol florist Edith Wilmot, who responded imaginatively to the theme of the shoot by creating a modern arrangement.

The bride’s chic and original hand-tied bouquet used Candy Prince tulips and Memory Lane roses as the focus, delicate pink Astrantia and silver Brunia, all highlighted by dark Dracena Compacta leaves. The graceful vase arrangement added a touch of elegance, mirroring the bride’s flowers: it included a touch of spring with pink Prunus.

Simplicity and style were the hallmarks of the groom’s buttonhole - a single Memory Lane Rose with Brunia, framed by Dracena.

“This year’s modern bride prefers the hand-tied bouquet for its ease of use and elegance,” say Edith Wilmot, who offer free, no-obligation wedding consultations, “while traditional brides prefer the shape and design of the shower bouquet. Large-headed roses are always popular, with contemporary foliage bringing the bride’s bouquet up to date, but look out for opulent peonies and hydrangea making a show at this summer’s weddings.”Edith Wilmot 31a Zetland Rd & 5 Carlton Court, Canford Lane, Westbury on Trym, Bristol. The ModelsLeading UK Bristol-based model agency Mustard provided our stunning models, Angela and Adam, for our photoshoot. Along with male and female models, Mustard represent classic models, child models and model families as well as actors and presenters, hair and make-up artists and stylists.

“When you hit your mid-twenties, weddings start coming at the rate of one a month!” says our groom Adam Reeves, who’s been modelling since he was 18. “This year it’s my oldest niece’s wedding and one of my best friend’s civil partnerships, and another good friend is getting married, too. If I were to get married, I’d want to blend modern individuality with tradition – something almost theatrical that, visually, people would remember. Having Scottish blood in me, I see myself in a kilt, but a modern one with a twist. What we’re wearing today is quite traditional and formal, but there’s a theme of individuality – like the floral motifs on the cuffs – that bring it together and make it work really well.”Mustard Model Agency The Media Centre, 1 Riverside, St Annes Rd, Bristol. The CakeWhen you think of weddings, you think of cake. And the design you choose can say a lot about who you are. Clifton Cakes provided the stunning Brooch Cake for our photoshoot: a simple design that oozes style and sophistication. The elegant decoration of white fondant icing, ribbon, diamante brooch and fresh flowers covers a delicious chocolate sponge with a Belgian chocolate ganache filling in the lower tiers and a fresh raspberry filling in the top tier.

“With our iced cakes,” says owner Frances, “we do very traditional designs with a contemporary twist, but we specialise in all sorts of chocolate cakes with wacky designs!” And what about the increasing trend for cupcakes at weddings? “Oh yes, cupcakes are still really popular. Since we’ve opened our shop people are coming in every day for them.” And the possibilities, when it comes to decorating cupcakes, are endless, whether you want flowers for a garden wedding, contemporary patterns in chocolate for a modern wedding or traditional coloured icing for a whimsical wedding.Clifton Cakes 3 Glentworth Rd, Clifton, Bristol. Ffi: 0117 927 7693, www.cliftoncakes.co.uk

The SuiTS“You generally want to keep things slick and well tailored for weddings,” says Bath and London gents’ outfitter Marc Wallace, who certainly has his finger on the style pulse when it comes to today’s groom. “Catwalks are going slightly looser on jackets, but that’s not appropriate for weddings. Cuts have been very slim over the past few seasons – grooms’ fashions are basically skinny trousers and narrow shoes playing with a bit of colour. Patent leather is in, three-piece suits are really big, and tiepins are coming back in fashion, with lower-cut waistcoats. Grey and pewter are big colours – a quite sharp Rat Pack look with a Mod twist.”

Our first suit is pure wool. “Dyed wool creates that texture in the yarn – and the yarns are different colours to achieve that two-tone look.” Our second look is what Marc Wallace calls “overseas fabric – for those getting married in the Caribbean! With white linen or lightweight wool, or cotton-striped seersucker, you might put an open shirt and jacket with it. You could wear a three-piece suit, then take off the jacket and waistcoat.”Marc Wallace 8 Edgar Buildings, George St, Bath. Ffi: 01225 466155, www.marcwallace.com

Wedding BellesTake time to understand your body shape, says Niki Whittle, and you’re well on your way to finding the perfect dress

On your wedding day you want to walk down the aisle confident that you look utterly fabulous. You want all the attention on you - and why

shouldn’t you? It’s one of the few days when it’s OK - in fact it’s expected - that everything is about you (oh, and the groom, of course). So getting the right dress is vital, but if you’re going to find ‘the one’, it will need to suit your shape and personality.

Understanding your body shape is fundamental to dressing in a flattering way. There are four basic body shapes: pear, column, hourglass and apple. Some of us will fit into more than one category, but this doesn’t matter - the secret to successful styling is understanding your figure and its proportions, and choosing styles of clothing that will even them out and show off your positives.

Stop spending so much time trying to cover up what you don’t like about your figure, and instead take a step back to discover your positives so that you can start to enhance these. Once you understand your shape, you’ll be able to put together the perfect dress – one that not only makes you look utterly gorgeous, but makes you feel amazing, too.

So, if you’re starting out on the search for your special dress, read on. Here’s our selection of beautiful wedding dresses to suit a variety of different body shapes, plus some top tips when it comes to styling yourself.

Pear ShapesPear-shaped women have a fabulous tiny waist, tend to carry their weight on their bottom half, and have shoulders that are narrower than their hips. It’s essential to wear garments that show off your petite top

half and tiny waist. Avoid bias-cut dresses as they will emphasise your hips and make you appear wider than you are.

1This dress from College Green Bridal is great for pear shapes. The halterneck broadens her shoulders,

and the ribbon in the empire line draws the eye to her narrowest point, creating a beautiful silhouette.

2 This stunning dress - Forever by Suzanne Neville, available from Carina Baverstock Couture - is

another perfect choice for pear-shaped frames. The neckline will broaden shoulders, and the bow detailing cinching in the dress will enhance a fabulous waist.

Most jewellers are well aware that diamonds are probably a girl’s best friend, which is why they make sure they’ve got lots of lovelies on display

when couples come knocking on their door. Here we take a look at the jewellery that will make your wedding day just that little bit more sparkly.

At Clifton Rocks you’ll find jewellery by both national designers and local artisans, making for an exceptional contemporary collection. Clare Chandler, an expert when it comes to advising customers on choosing the right ring for the right occasion, has noticed that coloured stones in wedding and engagement rings are proving popular at the moment. “Instead of diamonds,” she says, “customers are opting for other stones, such as blue, green or pink sapphires, rubies, emeralds or aquamarines.” You can also commission a piece to be made in Clifton Rocks’ onsite workshop, with models created in all metals and the stone matched to personal taste. The store even offers the exclusive service of making rings that complement an already existing engagement ring, or can make modifications so that it fits with the tone and style of your ceremony.

Julie Anne Palmer, another talented designer operating in Bristol, has been involved in the industry for 32 years and has exhibited her work in London, New York and around Europe. She took time out of her busy schedule to talk about current trends in wedding jewellery: “The trend for wedding and engagement rings is undisputedly white gold or platinum. Palladium, a relatively new metal for the jewellery trade, is now able to be hallmarked and is proving very popular. It has the hardness and whiteness of platinum, but because there’s much more of it available to be mined in the world, the

price is the about the same as 14ct gold, and less than half of platinum.” She’s also noticed a penchant for inherited family jewellery. “Jewellery is very sentimental, and using family gold and stones enriches the experience of having a new piece of jewellery that’s also part of your past.”To jewellery connoisseurs, the name Nicholas Wylde is synonymous with style and class. Mainly based in Bath, Mr Wylde has been known to create rings, trinkets and charms for renowned TV and sports celebrities and his services have even been employed by a member of the royal family. One of the UK’s leading independent jewellers and goldsmiths, this boutique not only boasts an extensive range of gold and

silver products but also specialises in exclusive commissions and restyling of existing jewellery. The workshop on the premises also provides an efficient repair service.

If you’re after a more mainstream choice to declare your love for your

special someone, there are plenty of venues out there that fit the bill. The designs from the Links ‘Love Note’ collection, for instance, are created from a set of heart motifs, with the ring and pendant sets made from interlocking hearts that swivel and rotate to reveal an engraved hidden message of your choosing. Azendi have released a series of heart-themed, lustrous charms, such as white gold heart stud earrings and emerald white gold heart pendants, while family-owned business Pravins also feature heart-shaped products, including a gold pendant with matching earnings and a white gold and diamonds pendant set. Finally, no list of glossy luxury trinkets would be complete without a special mention of Swarovski, with its dazzling rings and refined crystal bracelets making fine gifts for your special day.

6 months to go…A regular facial is a brilliant habit to get into. Rather than seeing it as a frivolous treat, regard it as essential skincare and relaxation. After all the abuse we dole out with heavy make-up, sunshine and harsh air-conditioned or heated offices, we owe it to our skin to give it a regular treat. The Orangery in Bath offers a range of facials to suit your skin, but we love their Aromatic Facial (£40) which will leave you feeling relaxed and glowing. And while you’re there, why not consider a course of IPL permanent hair reduction, to leave your pins (and anywhere else…) silky smooth and hair-free for life? Prices start from £300 for a top lip up to £1,500 for full legs.

5 months to go…If you haven’t already done so, now’s the time to establish a good skincare regime. If you’re overwhelmed by the choice of products out there, SpaceNK is a great place to start. With various exclusive and many organic ranges to choose from, all handpicked by SpaceNK’s founder Nicky Kinnaird and desired by the most-discerning women worldwide, you may spend considerably more here than you would in Superdrug, but the feel of the products on your skin and the effects you’ll see will be well worth it.

4 months to go…Most brides-to-be will admit that the whole process of organising your wedding is one of the most stressful experiences of your life. So it’s vital that you take care of yourself and remember what the purpose of getting married is all about – the two of you. Take regular time out, once a month, to connect with each other and enjoy a relaxing spa day at the Lido Bristol (10am-4pm or 4pm-10pm, £80pp) where you can chill out together in the hot tub, enjoy a treatment, or sit in the tea room reading magazines in the name of relationship building! Or try out Thermae Bath Spa’s ‘Time for Two’ weekday offer of a four-hour spa session, two-course meal,

20-minute Kraxen Stove for two and either Watsu for two, full-body massage for two or Thermae facial for two (£180).

3 months to go…Beautiful smiles go hand in hand with beautiful wedding photos, but if your teeth aren’t as pearly as they could be (thanks to that coffee, tea or red wine addiction), a course of professional teeth whitening is an easy way to improve your smile. Ennerdale House Dental and Cosmetic Centre get the best results from their at-home teeth-whitening treatment which involves wearing custom-made whitening trays every day or night for two weeks. Prices start from £300 with discounts available if you join one of Ennerdale’s Foundation Plans.

2 months to go…If you feel your complexion could do with a boost – perhaps you have some hyperpigmentation or acne-scarring that you’d love to banish for good? – try a course of microdermabrasion. Fresh Clinics’ medical-strength microdermabrasion really is the

business, exfoliating the top layer of skin to reveal plump, fresh skin beneath. And it’s so fast, you can even get it done in your lunch break – don’t you just love multi-tasking?

1 month to go…Getting ever closer to that special date, it’s time to turn your attention to your hair and make-up. Make an appointment with your hair salon to discuss your preferred look and double-check they’re booked for your big day! Frontlinestyle in Bath offer complimentary consultations for hair and make-up, so you can discuss the look you want. It’s a good idea to take

along tear-sheets of looks you like so that the stylist can get a feel for what you’re after. After FLS have sent you a quote that you’re happy with, you’ll have a practice session lasting around two hours in which around three styles are tried out, so you can pick the one you love! Make-up trials are always photographed at FLS to see how your make-up will show up in your wedding photos.

On the day…Relax, keep smiling and enjoy your day!

The clock is ticking and we’re only a couple of months away from what’s set to be one of the biggest public events of the decade. We are, of course, talking about the royal union of Prince William and Kate Middleton – and speculation on what the latter will be wearing at

the illustrious event has so far been rampant. There have been rumours that Bruce Oldfield will design Kate’s wedding dress, but, as we go to press, the acclaimed couture fashion designer has yet to confirm whether the allegations are true. He’s reported as predicting that the gown will have sleeves and a veil and that it will be modest: “You can’t walk down Westminster Abbey strapless…”

Another possible contender – as reported in The Observer – is Issa, the London-based fashion company. Miss Middleton has been seen wearing the label’s ‘draped’ dresses on numerous occasions, including during the announcement of her engagement to Prince William. Daniella Helayel, Brazilian-born Issa founder and designer, has admitted that Kate’s engagement dress was a career highlight but hasn’t yet claimed the wedding dress coup.

“It’s fascinating to speculate as to the style that Kate Middleton will choose for her wedding dress,” says Bath Fashion Museum manger Rosemary Harden. “The news that there will be a number of young attendants at the royal wedding suggests that Kate’s dress may well have a long train. I wonder, too, if the fact that the wedding is in April, a month when it can still be a little chilly, will mean that the dress will have long sleeves…?”

Inevitable comparisons with Princess Diana’s wedding dress are also being made. However, Jackie Sweeting of local wedding-wear supplier Special Day and Appletons has been quick to debunk rumours of similarities between Miss Middleton’s dress and that of her late mother-in-law. “I don’t think the style of dress will be like Diana’s,” she told wedding planner publication West Weddings. “The gown I can imagine her in is a fitted gown to the hips and then flowing out with a train.”

As with Charles and Diana’s wedding back in 1981, an extensive variety of merchandise is being released to promote the big event. Kate and William have already given their personal consent to a range of commemorative china (handmade plates, cups, pillboxes) featuring the couple’s intertwined initials in gold and silver, accompanied

by a stylish amalgamation of hearts, doves and ribbons. The Queen has also given her seal of approval to the production of a £5 Alderney coin inspired by photos of Kate and William at a sports event. And the Lord Chamberlain’s office has finally decided to approve the addition of an official tea-towel to the royal wedding memorabilia, despite some initial reluctance.

Closer to home, Bristol-based Pieminister have conjured up two royal wedding-themed pies to be released during British Pie Week (7-13 March). The Kate & Wills pie, available at Sainsbury’s stores, consists of British beef, wine, bacon, pearl onions, mushrooms and a dash of brandy. The Royal Pear pie, meanwhile, sold in selected Waitrose stores, is made with poached pears, rum and Fairtrade chocolate. Both pies will also be available in Pieminister outlets and independent shops in Bristol, London and elsewhere.

While the royal wedding will no doubt be broadcast in pubs, restaurants and assorted venues around the Bristol and Bath area, you’ll also able to watch the ceremony up on the BBC Big Screen in Millennium Square on Bristol Harbourside. As well as the wedding itself, they’ll be showing the couple’s balcony appearance and other live highlights throughout the day. Best of all, any spectators out there named William and Kate will gain free entry to At-Bristol on 29 April!

Some women have their wedding planned out in their head from a very young age. Most men, on the other hand, spend most of their lives with no clue what to even wear on the big day. With this in mind, Folio is here to help all those

would-be grooms out there in need of some vital wedding fashion tips!

First stop, Moss Bros Hire. Among their range of styles you’ll find Arundel and Bourneville. The former consists of a dark and distinctive three-quarter-length jacket, a Valentina waistcoat and a day-collar shirt with white accessories (a white tie on a white shirt can add a romantic flourish to the morning coat). The Bourneville model also features a three-quarter-length jacket but opts for a brown, warm chocolate colour, which goes well with oyster and cream wedding dresses. Or you could always go for Royal Ascot: tailored from the highest-quality fabric, with a light morning tail that helps you to stay cool and look relaxed, this is best worn with a tie and buff waistcoat.

Luxury lifestyle store Harvey Nichols is also a fitting choice when it comes to choosing your wedding outfit. Along with classic wool and mohair-blend suits (see below), you can also choose from a wide range of accessories (such as the Duchamp cufflinks, pictured right) and elegant shoes. The latter include Paul Smith brogues and high-shine, lace-up leather shoes by Prada, which feature a silver tone logo detail at the side (below right).

With a tasteful range of blazers, dress jackets and waistcoats, Cardiff's Slaters also have a good reputation for providing a personalised and affordable formal hire service online. Choose from dinner suits, eveningwear, Highlandwear

and the recently added Asian formalwear, which comprises sherwani suits, churidar bottoms and mojdi for your feet, all at reasonable prices. Simply order a formal hire brochure online and have it delivered to your doorstep.

If you’re already kitted out for the nuptials but are still lacking a decent tie for the ceremony, then a quick stop at TM Lewin is probably in order. This gentlemen’s retailer has a good selection of handmade silk-woven wedding ties (including the Caramel Scroll wedding tie, pictured above). All TM Lewin products are on half-price promotion from Mon 7 March, so you may also want to check out the store’s range of formal men’s suits (pictured right) and waistcoats, which are perfectly suitable for wedding events.

Finally, Howick Menswear are launching a new formalwear collection exclusively at House of Fraser. The range incorporates 10 suiting options, as well as an abundant variety of city-style shirting and fashionable, embroidered ties. Suiting is single-breasted with two buttons, double-vented and made of 100 per cent pure wool. The collection comes in a classic colour palette of black, navy and charcoal, with a traditional city or tonal pinstripe for added distinction, and there’s a carefully designed assortment of silk ties to go with the suits.

However, if all this seems too formal or expensive for your tastes, there are many other inventive ways to dress for your wedding. If you have a bit of a dark side, you could always whip out your black attire and leather coat for a gothic-style ceremony. Or if you feel like living the fairytale experience, why not dress up as Disney characters? At the end of the day, it’s your wedding and the choice is entirely yours! And perhaps hers, too…

FUNKY CAKESThough it never ceases to inspire gasps, the classic white three-tier wedding cake has almost become something of a cliche. The same couldn’t be said of the stunning range of chocolate spectacles from Bristol-based Chocolate Delores. Formerly chief designer and chocolatier at the UK’s leading organic cake company, Lizzie now makes her range of these “fun, funky, very luxurious, and extremely delicious” cakes for weddings and events. They’re almost too beautiful to eat… but someone usually manages to do so. (Wedding cakes from £250, based on portion size; chocolate stilettos from £10.)

DRESS YOUR VENUEl “We’re all familiar with the usual things that need to be done as soon as we announce our engagement,” says Kathryn King, owner and professional stylist at

Ambience Venue Styling Bristol. “Set the date, book the venue, buy

the dress… But so many brides don’t think about

how they dress their venue to complete their vision for their big day. It’s more than just whether to have chair covers or

not, or about arranging floral

centrepieces with your florist. The way you dress

your venue can transform your wedding venue into something

totally personal and unique.” Kathryn will carry out a free design consultation at your venue to discuss themes and colours, taking into account bride and groom’s personalities and how they want their venue to look, from statement centrepieces to swags and starlight backdrops.
