80 COLLINS STREET ADDITIONS AND REFURBISHMENT MELBOURNE Project Architect

DENTON CORKER MARSHALL ARCHITECTS PTY LTD This project was initiated by the new owners of the 51-storey office tower at 80 Collins Street, Melbourne, for consideration by the buildings primary tenant in evaluating a continuing leasehold. As a result the project was fairly complex in that it had to consider renovation and upgrade of the existing building and building services to meet Victorian Government Property Group benchmarks, including ESD objectives, as well as remain attractive to commercial tenants. The project scope included a full assessment of alternative occupancy options, including churn strategies and options for additional floor area. This included an assessment of existing building services and upgrades as part of each development option. The project identified two key options. The first option retained existing services and structure in plant rooms by limiting development over basement areas and using steel structure. The second option provided significant additional floor space to the lower floors of the existing tower but required the removal and replacement of existing building services and existing basement structure. Deliverables included a detailed design report including full consultant input and design drawings and renderings. A 3D conceptual model was also produced to assist with assessing urban design impacts of each proposal.

DESIGNINC BRISBANE This project comprised renovation and refurbishment of the iconic ‘70s beachside hotel ‘Surfair’, the addition of 80 units in two blocks, convention centre, gaming, restaurant and café facilities, upgraded back of house and new landscaping and pool. The complex caters to various modes of operation as well as separating gaming and bar patrons from hotel guests. The restaurant and convention centre are provided poolfront address with ocean views overlooking. The complex has set a benchmark standard for hotels in the area. BRISBANE STORYEY BRIDGE CLIMB FACILITY BRISBANE Design Architect

DESIGNINC BRISBANE This project conceived of a long metal-clad tube mounted withinthe lead span of the Bridge, 10 metres above ground. Climbers and visitors access the facility via lifts or stairs from the ground. This allowed the operator to retain valuable site area for temporary bus and vehicle parking. Once inside, climbers are processed, provided with safety trainingand instruction and depart for and return from the climb. Café and other front of house facilities were also provided within the tube. Administration of the company was housed in a second floor mezannine. Despite stringent heritage protection of the Bridge, the proposal found favour with the Lord Mayor and City Council, being approved without dispute as per the original concept. This design concept was the winning submission within a limited consortia EOI process. The added value provided to the client’s brief set it apart from other entries. The building looks set to become an iconic part of Brisbane’s architecture.

MCGOWAN RESIDENCE WHITSUNDAYS, QUEENSLAND Project Architect

3 bedroom residence with ocean views at the Whitsundays. The client sought unique designs for a house that could be built in two stages. The solution developed comprised a tube towards the rear of the excavated site area to be built first, with a major addition including 2 level tower, double height informal living and bridge link to be constructed later. This allowed the client to occupy this wonderful site and construct the remainder of the house at a later date. For the final design, a long steeply elevated driveway winds up toa view of the house presenting as a ‘tower’. This ‘tower’ comprised open-air car spaces at basement level, sunken lounge at first and master bedroom and ensuite at second. Once at the house, a traverse up stairs sunk deep into the site presents the entry, set back against the dry stone retaining walls cut into the site. Once inside, stairs link up to bedrooms at the upper level. The master bedroom is separated from the remainder of the house through an upper level bridge link floating over the double height informal living area. The master bedroom is sufficiently elevated to gain full views to the valley and ocean views beyond over adjacent trees. Setting the building into the site improves potential for naturally cool earth to cool the house.

4 bedroom residence in an established Brisbane suburb. The client sought an innovative solution for a steeply sloping well vegetated small lot. The client required separate living quarters for friends and family if required, that would integrate with the main house when not in use. This requirement led to an innovative solution where two two-bedroom apartments could integrate to form a single 4 bedroom house when required, with a single stair. When in use in the integrated mode, the kitchen for the second apartment functions as a bar and preparation area for a kids play or rumpus area. The master bedroom was located on the top floor, with access to a private roof top terrace and spa. The second bedroom and main bathroom is also located on this level. Living spaces are located on the lower floor with access to carports and street entries. Third and fourth bedrooms are located at the lower level with direct pool access.
