MULTICULTURAL ARTS VICTORIA
Multicultural Arts Victoria
Many special people have contributed to the development of Multicultural Arts Victoria
(MAV) over the years and Multicultural Arts Victoria would like to pay tribute to one of
these unique, generous and very special people- Mr Haneef Badrudeen.
Unfortunately Haneef passed away recently. He was a very strong supporter of MAV
and helped establish the organsation in its formative years. He was a quiet achiever
and he worked tirelessly for the community and was still an active member of MAV
until the very end. With his exceptional accountancy skills, close ties to the Sri Lankan
community, a love of the arts and multiculturalism, he has been an enormous and
positive contributor to the development and growth of Multicultural Arts Victoria and
the sector.
Our deepest condolences to his family. Vale Haneef! He will always be remembered in
the highest regard by those who knew him! His signicant contribution will never be
forgotten and was highlighted in our recent history Giving Voice which was published
to honour the work of people on the Board of Management such as Haneef. Haneef’s
commitment to multiculturalism and the arts was unwavering – he will be sadly missed
by all.
***
For over four decades Multicultural Arts Victoria has championed cultural intersec-
tions that have shaped the broader social fabric of Victoria. More than simply art for
art’s sake, MAV promotes intercultural dialogue that brings cultures together through
increased cultural literacy. Its innovative work not only improves human rights, but
increases Victoria’s economy through cultural tourism, employment pathways and
improving social cohesion.
To date the organization has demonstrated a unique capacity for innova-tion, adaption and responsiveness that forms the basis of its success. MAV performs with limited resources; It delivers a wide range of high quality programs and activities relevant to high quality cultural activity and pro-moting cross cultural exchange.

Haneef was a wonderful person who gave a lot to the various communities he was involved with and as a dedicated advocate of MAV.
Elena Di Bez Adelaide- former EO MAV
I was impressed with his humility, his strong ethics and keen support of social harmony, social inclusion and support for artists of CALD backgrounds. I valued Haneef’s financial competencies, but also his wise counsel, when confronted with difficult situations. His contribution to his own community, but also the broader Australian community, has been significant and he will be missed by the voluntary sectorthat he so faithfully served.
Mike Zafiropoulos Former MAV Chair
Haneef was truly a wonderful human being. His dedication to MAV and the community will never be forgotten.

EDITORIAL
To do this important work the organisation has needed a strong dedicated Board
of Management and team and a stable base to perform our work. After many
years of being based in Fitzroy we have recently moved to South Melbourne.
Multicultural Arts Victoria has been seeking a secure base to allow it to effectively
perform its role and activities as a peak body. MAV had been searching for
increased space as the organisation has grown signicantly over the past few
years. MAV had been operating from the Fitzroy Town Hall since 1998. In the early
70’s MAV was also located at the Fitzroy Town Hall during the organisation’s
beginnings as the Festival of All Nations. Fitzroy Town Hall holds a special place
and signicance in the multicultural history of Melbourne. Given the context and
history, it was with some sadness that we have now left the Fitzroy Town Hall. We
have fortunately found and relocated to larger premises in the City of Port Phillip
and are now based in the South Melbourne Town Hall. We thank the City of Port
Phillip for the generous support of our new home and look forward to working
closely with the City. We also thank the City of Yarra for their enormous support
over the past four decades of our organisation, artists and communities.
To mark our move and celebrate our new home in the City of Port Phillip on
January 28 MAV produced The Piers Festival in association with many of our
longtime supporters as well as some new partners – The Ofce of Multicultural
Affairs and Citizenship, Australia Day Committee, Major Projects Victoria, the Port
of Melbourne and Fitzgerald Constructions. It was a signicant festival co-ordinat-
ed by Andrea Makris and it made many extraodinary connections at many levels.
Many stories were told between generations and amongst each other reecting
what makes Victoria so special, our rich history of migration.
The MAV program over the coming months will continue to attract a broad and
diverse audience that reects the extraodinary diversity that makes Victoria so
unique. We have the Saturday Sessions at the the Speigel Tent , the Summer
Concert series at Faireld, Black Harmony Gathering and the Emerge Fes-
tival in June and July showcasing the talent and tremendous contribution made
by refugee and asylum seekers to our community. The Festival attracts record
numbers each year and is coordinated by Jess Fairfax.
Emerge on the Goulburn and Ballarat Harmony Fest 2012 are partnership ini-
tiatives of the Emerge Cultural Hubs. We also have Heartlands – our partnership
with AMES which is a valued initiative to support the artistic output and career
aspirations of refugee visual artists.
Multicultural Arts Victoria is inspired by the work of the artists and communities
around us and their commitment to sharing their culture through art in all its
forms. Facilitating such diverse talent and passion, and helping Victorian audiences
to be a part of it, is extremely rewarding for MAV and our many collaborators and
supporters.
We therefore dedicate this rst 2012 edition of Folio in honour of Haneef Badru-
deen to acknowledge his passion, commitment and signicant contribution to
multiculturalism and Multicultural Arts Victoria.
Multicultural Arts Victoria will continue to produce amazing work and build
social cohesion in the community to honour the amazing work of its founders like
Haneef. Thank you Haneef.

On Saturday 28 January 2012, Multicultural Arts Victoria’s Piers Festival brought
the Port Melbourne piers precinct to life with a spectacular display of music,
dance, food, historical displays, the tall ship Enterprize and more. This wonderful
celebration of Melbourne’s diversity tied in with Victoria’s Australia Day activities
to highlight our state’s rich history of migration. The Piers Festival attracted over
ve thousand people, many of whom had taken the rst steps into their new lives
on these very same piers.
Station Pier at the Piers Festival
Originally called Railway Pier, the heritage listed Station Pier ofcially opened in
1854 and played a pivotal role in the lives of gold seekers and early settlers. As
part of the Piers Festival, Station Pier offered an Open Day, where people were
invited to stroll along the pier to the Cruise Terminal building, the original arrival
point for many migrants. Here, they could learn about the history of the pier by
viewing the Immigration Museum display and the photographic exhibition by
Georgia Metaxas. Metaxas’ collection of prints documented the ‘Blessing of the
Waters’ ceremony that has been hosted by the Greek Orthodox community at this
site for over three decades. Visitors were also treated to an incredible cinematic
journey as they watched Dall’Italia All’Australia, a 1924 journey from Italy to
Australia accompanied by live music ensemble I Viaggiatori.
Princes Pier at the Piers Festival
Princes Pier, adjacent to Station Pier, was completed in 1916 and also played a
signicant role in Victoria’s multicultural, wartime and maritime history. Its 1935
gatehouse is heritage listed and the pier was recently restored for public use by
Major Projects Victoria (contracting Fitzgerald Constructions). Mr Romeo D’Amato,
one of the Directors of Fitzgeralds, has held the restoration project close to his
heart for many years. Mr D’Amato’s own parents arrived on boat Australis at
Princes Pier in the early 1960s and like many other visitors to The Piers Festival, his
family have a log-standing, emotional connection to the site.
With glorious weather to show off the newly restored Princes Pier, the celebrations
began with roving entertainers including animal puppets, Chinese lion dancers
and African drum and dance weaving their way around the food and craft market-
place. Tall ship Enterprize berthed at the pier and offered boardings and sailings
throughout the day. This was a signicant event, as this was the rst time a vessel
had berthed at Princes Pier in 24 years.
The cultural program on mainstage began from 4pm, with Minister Kotsiras
and other dignitaries offering a warm and festive welcome. The program included
a quality and diverse range of acts including Arte Kanela, the Shljivovitz
Orkestra, Sol Nation and Verchovyna Dance. The Melbourne Ska Orchestra
delivered a highly entertaining set with an exciting countdown to spectacular
reworks between the piers. A tting end to a wonderful celebration of migration
and diversity.
The Piers Festival is proudly produced by Multicultural Arts Victoria and supported by the
Ofce of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship, the Australia Day Committee (Vic), Major
Projects Victoria, Immigration Museum and Fitzgerald Constructions.

The Celtic Ceilidh: Australia Day at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl
It is an unfortunate fact that in the myriad of multicultural celebrations across
Victoria, the Celts are sometimes forgotten! With a culture that spans back to the
second millennium BC, Celtic populations have spread out over many centuries
and across many countries, yet their languages and traditions remain distinct and
strong.
This year’s Australia Day concert at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl presented a
spectacular celebration of Celtic culture that was enjoyed by thousands. From
traditional dances to contemporary tunes, the Celtic Ceilidh, programmed and
produced by Multicultural Arts Victoria, offered something special for the young
and the young at heart.
The Celtic Ceilidh concert began with an uplifting performance by Kinja that
combined beautiful Celtic vocals and violin with Indigenous percussion and did-
geridoo. Kinja are Ron (a descendant of the Wamba Wamba tribe of Swan Hill, Vic)
and Sarah (whose roots are Scottish) and their performance offered a poignant
gesture of reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures on this
important day. A ceremonious and powerful march by two of Melbourne’s oldest
and most prestigious highland pipe bands drew the attention of everyone present
at the Bowl. The Williamstown RSL Highland Pipe Band and Melbourne City
Highland Pipe Band performed with air and precision, doing justice to their
100+ years of patronage.
Australia’s biggest Celtic-rock export, Claymore, proved once again that they
have what it takes to work a crowd. Having played to worldwide audiences in the
tens of thousands for over two decades, there were many at the Celtic Ceilidh who
knew all the lyrics to their classic songs and were not afraid to show it. Combining
good old fashioned rock’n’roll with the timeless sounds of bagpipes and Celtic
melodies, Claymore offered a great fusion of old and new that brought everyone
at the Bowl to their feet.
A spectacular dance display continued to wow the crowd, with Cosgriff, Rabusin,
Glen Brae and Meincke dance schools collaborating to create a kaleidoscope of
colour and movement across the venue. The star of the show, ARIA Award winning
Damien Leith, stole the hearts of many with his beautifully crafted songs and
heartfelt renditions of Celtic ballads. One could tell he had put a lot of thought in-
to his set and the quality of the music left everyone feeling uplifted and inspired.
Celtic culture is alive and well in this land and this year’s Australia Day concert re-
inforced the strength of their culture and the pride in their traditions to be enjoyed
for generations to come.
Proudly produced by Multicultural Arts Victoria in association with the Australia Day Commit-
tee (Vic) and Arts Centre Melbourne.

Righteous is based on the premise that the arts are a powerful medium to con-
nect with youth. The main principle of Righteous is to encourage positive youth
participation and leadership. It provides necessary skills and experience and is
an important step in creating opportunities for young people in the process of
resettlement, connection to country and their advancement in the community. In
December 2012 MAVs youth stream produced a forum and a festival in City of
Melbourne’s Signal.
The two part program youth event Righteous was held in Melbourne City on the
north bank of the Yarra River at Signal. Righteous is designed to create aware-
ness and discussion around human rights and celebrate our diversity, held on the
United Nation’s International Human Rights Day.
Rights at the Round Table is a forum designed for young people to speak up
and discuss ideas and expectations around human rights. In 2012 gender roles
and equality were explored and discussed as a group. This forum was hosted by
Alia Gabres (Centre for Poetics and Justice) with guest speakers Robbie Thorpe
and Nasro Yussf. These key speakers represented the First Australians and cultur-
ally diverse Australians and covered a broad range of topics including marriage
rights, women’s role in land rights and intercultural relationships.
Rights by the River is a music and dance event celebrating and showcasing
Melbourne’s diverse young talent on stage. Special guests from Sydney, Radical
Son, joined Melbourne forces for Rights by the River and local heroes Fresh Mob
featured and launched their compilation CD as a nale to the program.
Dancehall, and hip hop with Indigenous and Afro avours resounded over the
urban banks of the Yarra and young performers gave an incredible show proving
once again Melbourne’s young music scene is as rich as it is diverse.
We revisited the one and only MASSIVE hip hop choir a year on from their debut
at Righteous 2010 and also welcomed Rising High Studios to the stage. Daddy
Dizzy hit us with the Hood-Star mixtape release, South Sudan massive 249 Ent
blazed onto the scene and favourite rap collective Dig Deep contributed towards
this fantastic festival. Zimbabwean dancehall king Apprentice with Dark $Paid,
killa moves and a danceoor by Culture Crew and Fresh of the Block battled it
out B Boy and B Girl style.

Established in 2005 with a small pilot project involving ve African groups from
the Horn of Africa funded by VicHealth, Visible has connected over 300 artists from
diverse refugee and emerging culturally diverse communities with some of Mel-
bourne’s most versatile and talented artists/ producers. Visible was created to pro-
vide a ‘step up’ in the community and music industry for recent arrival and refugee
communities. Some of the musicians involved in Visible have ultimately become
strongly established performers and now feature in groups including Dereb The
Ambassador, Diafrix, The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, Grrilla Step and
Kimbaya. The nal product of the program, encompises the recording, release and
launch of a CD. Last November, the Visible Six CD was launched at CERES.
After the original date of November 26 was washed out, we remained determined
to make the Visible CD Launch happen, which in the end took place on Decem-
ber 3 at CERES Environment Park from 2-6.30pm. The event launched the Visible
Six CD, the culmination of a year long music mentoring program with artists from
emerging and refugee communities.
In 2011 the Visible music mentoring program linked over 50 artists with 8 estab-
lished producers and musicians to record a track, receive promotional material
such as photos and video footage, performance opportunities at the Emerge
Festival and other events happening throughout the year, publicity through radio
and print, and the opportunity to attend music business skills workshops.
The nal product of the program, the Visible Six CD, features the 13 produced
tracks from the artists and groups involved in the program and transverses 12
different cultures and many styles of music. The CD includes traditional music from
Ethiopia, Congo, Somalia and Burundi, and contemporary styles from Sri Lanka,
Colombia, Comoros and Pacic Islands, Rwanda and South Sudan.
The CD Launch attracted an audience of around 200 and brought together over 10
different cultures to share music, dance together and learn about Victoria’s diverse
communities. It offered a supportive environment for emerging artists to perform
and get audience feedback, building condence in their music and stage craft as
well as a great promotional tool to get a kick start in the industry.
The lineup included: Bitsat Seyoum – original Ethiopian songstress, Jerusa-
lem Gospel Rumba – Congolese Gospel and sweet harmonies, Mirakle Gotti
– global Hip Hop with a message, Macc-Toó – Melbourne’s one and only female
Rwandan Hip Hop artist, Infaas – Sinhalese Rnb and Hip Hop, Anbessa Gebrehi-
wot – traditional Ethiopian roots music & the Burundian Drummers – traditional
Burundian drums, dance and chants.
The Visible Six CD may now be purchased through Multicultural Arts Victoria or
digitally downloaded on iTunes. More info: [email protected]

Multicultural Arts Victoria’s Contemporary Cultures is a new stream that focuses
on the multiplicity of creative approaches and provides pathways for experimenta-

approaches to cultural traditions and contemporary arts practice.
Following up the 2011 motiroti Food Sharing Workshop in partnership with
Melbourne Festival, MAV has been running a series of food sharing workshops
with a group of artists and creative people from diverse cultural backgrounds. The
last workshop delice was held on Saturday 4 February 2012 and saw Stella Hen-

Range/Terrain is about dreaming big, to look at the possibilities of the terrain and the textures. We talk of soundscapes by the river. Mystics in the forest. Taking over a shop with a sign that says Colony Bar – and just imagine what you’ll see there. It is aimed at providing a creative environment for artistic exchange, risk, dialogue and engagement with each other and the community in which they will reside. The project will provide an open lab environment that emphasises cross art form engagements in consultation and collaboration with the local arts and non-arts community. By employing experimental and hybrid art forms and aesthetically diverse art practices, Range/Terrain seeks to generate innovative reconsiderations of genre and audience engagement.

neighbouring countries around the globe at Faireld Amphitheatre through out Febru-
ary. The Faireld Summer concert series presented a myriad of diverse yet local talent.

Music for the People @ Shore Reserve, Pascoe Vale SouthSaturday 25 February
Music for the People (MFTP) opened the Brunswick Music Festival this year and ex-
tended the festival beyond Brunswick and into the surrounding Moreland suburbs. The
MFTP 2012 program offered kid’s activities, market stalls and a myriad of music and
dance. From bellydance with Underbelly to Serbian dance with Kolo; from cumbia
with Madre Monte to gypsy with the Shljivovitz Orchestra, the crowd were treated
to a fantastic party atmosphere. The Public Opinion Afro-Orchestra took the show
out in spectacular afro-funk style and left us all looking forward to the full festival
season. Presented by Moreland City Council in partnership with Multicultural Arts Victoria.
