OVERVIEWHPA Helping People Achieve is a non-government, not for profit organisation that provides supported employment and accommodation options for people aged 16 and above, with intellectual, mental or physical disabilities.

Founded in 1963 by the late Harold Garner, HPA was established to provide educational services for people with disabilities, and later branched out to provide sheltered employment in 1968 and accommodation in 1985.

Operating in Darwin, Palmerston and the surrounding rural areas, HPA is the sole provider of supported employment services in these locations.

The company consists of five major business arms including Kokoda Industries, AusdesignsTM and Darwin Accommodation Services and supports approximately 73 people in employment and up to 45 across three models of supported accommodation, transition units and community based outreach services.

HPA has enjoyed longevity and success due to the dedication and governance of its Board.

The Board comprises seven elected members and two co- opted members who are selected for their skills in business and commitment to the provision of services to people with a disability.

Members of the Board promote a culture of competence, caring and encouragement and seek to promote a professional image in all activities conducted by HPA. Applicable standards are enunciated by the Board and implemented through a Chief Executive Officer and management team.

Funding is received from the Federal Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) and Northern Territory Department of Health and Families, sales from core businesses, revenue from fundraising, financial support from charitable trusts, service clubs and donations assist in bridging the gap between the cost of providing services and Government funding.

Other individuals and major sponsors who continue to support HPA on an annual basis include PowerWater Corporation, Darwin Turf Club, JC Electronic Security, Microsoft, Trade Building Supplies, FredBuild,

Bizlink Solutions, Merit Partners, NT Airports, Sign City, Folklift Solutions, NT Government, Channel 9, Southern Cross Television, Mix 104, Veolia, Murray Oakley and Tourism NT.

THE FUTUREHPA is developing a number of activities to improve facilities and capabilities of the organisation.

‘HPA Community Hub’ at our Winnellie site hosts our Kokoda Industries and our HPA Administration office. The development of the Community Hub will allow HPA to expand its support of the community with training and the creation of a suitable indoor outdoor meeting area.

A new planed larger showroom at Ausdesigns will allow HPA to create a ‘Day Plan Community’ facility to allow us to expand our life skills and independent living training and support for our amazing employee’s.

Extra Supervisors will be appointed to provide an opportunity for those who have gained skills to be promoted to levels where they are given greater responsibility.

This will also allow current employees to move into assistant training roles and help their peers to learn new skills.

HPA has a number of Memorandums of Understanding (MOU’s). HPA will continue to form strategic alliances to create further opportunities for people with disabilities.

HPA adheres to a series of best practice internal policies outlining management’s objectives for implementing and improving all systems and procedures. All HPA employees are trained to understand and comply with company policies including;

HPA is committed to providing services that meet both the Commonwealth and Northern Territory Disability Service Standards and has a strong focus on providing training opportunities and support for people with a disability.

In line with this commitment, HPA is currently working towards its goal of obtaining ISO 9000 Quality

Management Systems Certification.

THE BUSINESS ARMS

Services and TrainingHPA offers a variety of services and training within its business arms.

The HPA employment service, aims to create and develop employment opportunities for people with disabilities in integrated settings and provide the training and ongoing support necessary for those people to succeed in paid employment.

This is accomplished through the operation of small businesses that include people with disabilities amongst their employees and by developing support models, which enable people with disabilities to access a broader range of jobs in the general workforce.

School-work experience ( Yr 10-12)School students with disabilities are also able to participate in school to work transition programmes, which include basic work ethics, works skills and generally preparing for life after school.

HPA works collaboratively with the Department of Education, Employment and Training’s Student Services Branch to ensure appropriate placements and support.

A division of HPA, DAS Support Services assists people who have a disability with low to moderate support needs. All support services provided by DAS focus on increasing independent living skills and community participation and maximise engagement in social, community and employment opportunities.

DAS operates within the Darwin and Palmerston areas. The Company owns numerous properties including:

• A group home – Provision of permanent full-time or part-time supervised accommodation for three occupants in a residential setting.

• Training Unit – fully furnished training unit for up to 3 residents

• Self Contained Units - 6 x 1 bedroom and 2 x 2 bedroom units are available to live independently with support from an on-site caretaker and outreach support.

• 3 x 2 bedroom and 1 x 1 bedroom units are available for consumers to live independently with outreach support.

DAS also provides independent living training skills in the following areas.

• Household management

• Shopping

• Budgeting and banking

• Personal health and hygiene

• Access to transport, suitable accommodation and mainstream specialist services

• Accessing social and recreational activities

AusdesignsTM is a small industrial textile business, providing training and supported employment for people with a disability.

Conference and SouvenirsSpecialising in the design and manufacture of conference bags, gifts, homewares and souvenirs, AusdesignsTM provides a variety of unique and genuine Aboriginal printed designs as well as plain dyed cotton fabrics.

Uniforms and Work WearLocated at Palmerston AusdesignsTM operates from a factory and showroom providing screen printing, embroidery, full colour digital transfers and heat transferred designs. AusdesignsTM supplies T-shirts, hats, Hi-Vis work clothing and custom made uniforms and school clothing and corporate wear.

Industrial RagsA multi faceted manufacturer AusdesignsTM provides bulk supplies of rags for hand wiping and cleaning, clean t-shirt material, sheeting material and towelling.

Confidential Paper ShreddingA confidential paper shredding service processes large quantities of confidential documents for recycling.

Mail outs, collating, packaging and general assembly tasks are also undertaken at AusdesignsTM.

PEG (Participate, Engage, Grow) Day Program is a Centre-Based Disability Program offering choice, diversity and active participation for people with an intellectual disability.

Participants may also have a physical disability or a mental health disability. We offer community inclusion for our clients, and recognise the differing interests and abilities of all people.

The focus is on the client meeting their goals, supported by PEG staff and the client’s support network.

Since HPA’s official reopening of the newly named ‘Shoal Bay Trash & Treasure’ on Wednesday 11th July 2018, with the Support of Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis and counsellors, HPA has ensured that Darwin City Council can continue to deliver an environmentally responsible facility. Our aim is to reduce the amount of material entering the landfill at Shoal Bay with recycled materials being separated from general waste. It is also a convenient way for the community to reuse and recycle unwanted items.

You can find a wide range of different second-hand goods such as:
