Training of Trainers Workshop Manual
Foreword
The Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS) seeks to protect
and promote health in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by training competent
practitioners in all health fields. Training of trainers (ToT) program is
a critical aspect of achieving the highest quality postgraduate medical
studies.
From this standpoint comes this innovative ToT on the Go program (which
will be followed by other specific related programs) to develop the skills
of trainers in the health fields related to teaching methods and methods
of continuous assessment.
It’s my pleasure to welcome all the training programs and hospitals that
have actually started or (completed their preparations) for hosting the
program and holding training workshops, in attendance or virtually, under
the supervision of the Training Department at SCFHS.
I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to the ToT Advisory
Committee and the assistant administrative staff for their hard and
fruitful work, which resulted in the momentum of this qualitative
transformation in transferring the ToT on the Go program to become
under direct responsibility for the training programs and accredited
hospitals, and I hope I see all the programs, hospitals and institutions
approved by The Saudi Commission for Health Specialties has become
registered centers that offer this program (in all its current and future
formats) independently and under the supervision of SCFHS over the next
few years.
With my sincere wishes for luck and success,
Dr. Sami Abdulrahman AlhaidarExecutive Director of Training

Training of Trainers Workshop Manual
Dear Colleagues,I am delighted to invite you to join this innovative journey of train of the trainers (ToT) program. As many of you already know, this initiative has started in the year of 2017 under the name of the ToT on the Go. Since then dozens of workshops have been sponsored and conducted by the training unit of the SCFHS and over one thousand participants have been trained and dozens of healthcare staff have become ToT facilitators. Since the ToT on the Go inception, the vision was clear to the training unit at SCFHS that this program alone is not enough (other advanced ToT programs to come), and that the SCFHS will eventually transfer the responsibility of organizing, conducting, and improving such ToT programs to the accredited postgraduate residencies (PGR) and hospitals. Indeed, this mission has started with a dozen of hospitals and PGR who have hosted the ToT on the Go.The ToT on the Go is an intense yet participant oriented one-day or at most two separate half-days’ workshop within a given week. It aims to address the specific learning needs of the participants of the hosting PGR or hospital. The program must include the latest cutting-edge scientific recommendations in teaching, learning, workplace-based assessment, and feedback. It is delivered in an engaging learner-centered approach utilizing the adult learning principles. Further, it will foster building long-lasting professional relationship among the participants, the facilitators, the organizers, and leaders who are key to hosting the program. I urge you all to visit the training unit webpage on the SCFHS website and learn more on how to request and host ToT on the Go workshop in your center and become a registered ToT on the Go center. The webpage also contains resources like the ToT visual guide, references to the ToT on the Go workshop, ToT quality assurance guide and checklist, the facilitator and participant guides templates, and much more.
Once again, welcome on boardand I wish you enduring success in this journey!
Message from the ToT Chair

The training unit at SCFHS would like to thank Dr. Baraa Al Ghalyini for her extraordinary work and achievements as the first director of the ToT program whom she also contributed greatly to this manual. Moreover, the unit extends its sincere appreciation to Dr. Hesham Al Babtain as he continued the journey as the director of the ToT program in 2019 and early 2020 where it started the current momentum of enabling and empowering the residency programs and the hospitals to become ToT registered and conduct it in all its formats hopefully independently under the supervision of the training unit at SCFHS. Special appreciation to the advisory committee members listed here who represent the master mind of these innovative initiatives:
Prof. Mohammed Al Rukban Dr. Souad Al Subaihi
Dr. Reem Al Affari Dr. Shadi Al Moziny
Dr. Hadi Al Enazi
Finally, the training unit would like to extend a very special appreciation to the administrative specialists who act as the lifeblood of the ToT program and without their professional support and dedication the journey would have been impossible to continue:

Normally, in this workshop there will be total of 50 - 60 participants whether conducted face to face, virtual, or blended. It is preferably that the participants are all homogenous in terms of their profession to tailor the instruction and delivery methods and to receive more in-depth and useful feedback from the participants and the quality assurance experts of the SCFHS. In classical face -to- face workshops, each 25 – 30 participants will be grouped in color-coded teams: Orange and Green. In situations like COVID -19 pandemic, the number of participants in face – to – face ToT on the Go workshop can be as minimal as 16 - 20 participants to mitigate the risk of infection while maximizing the benefit. To maximize the benefit (while considering unusual circumstances like COVID -19 pandemic), workshop activities will vary between small and large group activities. The day will start with an orientation session to welcome all participants, introduce them to workshop facilitators and walk them through the workshop agenda. Participants will then be divided to two groups to participate in one of the interactive workshop sessions (Teaching or Assessment) then they will swab in the afternoon. Below, please find a detailed description of the workshop:Orientation SessionThe day will start with an orientation session to welcome all participants, introduce facilitators, walk you through the day, explain details of each station and answer questions.

Goal Objectives Pre-workshop reading Materials &Resources
Prepare participates to create teaching and learning opportuni-ties in a busy clinical practice.
Introduce participants to a broader scope of teaching methods, which can be applied in different clinical settings like ambulato-ry, bedside and during procedures.
Participants will be introduced to “1 min Preceptor” teaching model by reading the educational materials sent to them prior to workshop, then demonstrate skills using this model through interactive activities.
Appreciate the importance of using the most appropriate teaching technique in different settings; those, which address psychomotor skills and direct observa-tion, are being few examples.

Feedback & workshop evaluation
Your big day, or ToT on the Go workshop, is ending. This last and very important segment of the day is a large group activity where volunteer members from each team will share the take-home messages from both sessions and discuss them with the entire group. To maximize the benefit and sustain the learning outcomes of this workshop, participants will be expected to complete post-workshop self-reflective activities and send it back to ToT training committee. Further details will be provided to participants during the orientation session.
Feedback is an important component in this course; please ensure to complete the feedback form before leaving for the day. The quality assurance team from the SCFHS will provide a written feedback to the ToT on the Go workshop organizers within five business days from the end of the activity and this will provide useful insights for further improvement.
