Rajasthan

Rajasthan is facing acute water scarcity, with a per capita annual water availability likely to fall below 450 m3 by 2050. The State has to deal with erratic rainfall and a growing imbalance between demand and supply of water. Groundwater resources, on which 90% of the drinking water supply relies, are depleting at an alarming rate, leading simultaneously to growing water quality problems. To address these issues, Government of Rajasthan has decided to engage in a broad water sector reform following the principles of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), with the support of the European

Union. The key principles promoted in the new State Water Policy are: • integrated and multi-sectoral approach to water resources planning, development and management • shift from supply-driven engineering approach to water demand management • bottom-up approach including empowerment of Water User Groups to manage their own water

resources The objective of EU SPP programme is two-fold: 1. State wide water sector reforms leading towards integrated and sustainable water resources

management 2. In selected pilot areas of Rajasthan, local communities / authorities are executing their responsibility

and achieving (a) equitable access to safe, adequate, affordable and sustainable water supply (b) conservation, stabilization and replenishment of surface and groundwater
