Department Spotlight: MS Health Sciences

It is amazing how fast this summer is going by and I hope that your summer has been awesome. I am looking forward to hearing about your adventures upon your return. Make sure you are using this time to recharge your bat-teries so you are ready to hit the ground running in the Fall!!

Dr. William Sorensen Why would you want to study

Health Sciences? Four reasons.

First, when you study Health Sci-

ences you are practicing science.

Science is a self-correcting tradition

of collaboration, brain-storming,

observing nature, checking observa-

tions, admission of biases, and con-

clusions. There is little else in hu-

man history that packs this type of

growth and excitement.

Second, when you study the Health Sciences you study a huge

majority of ALL the sciences, from what is labeled “basic” sci-

ences (biology, chemistry, physiology), to more epistomologi-

cal sciences (anthropology, education, sociology), and even

decision-making sciences (marketing and economics, psychol-

ogy, statistics). This is a unique opportunity to find or create

cross-pollinations across different types of disciplines.

Third, when you study the Health Sciences you are investing in

yourself, not only in knowledge but also in building communi-

cative skills, along with in ensuring a place for yourself in a

rapidly growing market. In a 2007 article, Forbes magazine

reported that of the top 30 fastest growing jobs, 17 of them

are health-care related. This labor statistic, along with the trend

to focus more on prevention rather than treatment of illness,

will open doors for the Health Scientist in a rapidly shifting jobs

market.

Fourth, the Health Sciences will make a life-long learner out of

you. These are four reasons why you should consider a degree

in Health Science.

Message From the Chair of Health & Kinesiology

I just wanted to give you a quick update

on some of the new changes you will no-

tice around the Department this Fall. First,

we have hired two new faculty, RJ Cowan

and Dr. Neil Dong, and they will be join-

ing us this Fall. Dr. Dong will be teaching

Biomechanics and Mr. Cowan will be

teaching many classes within the Depart-

ment. Make sure to stop by their offices to

say hello and congratulate them on their

new positions. Second, there has been

additional changes made to the advising

for students. Please make sure to visit our

website: www.uttyler.edu/hkdept to learn

more about the changes. Third, is that we

will now have a H&K Wellness Center

housed within our building. This will pro-

vide an awesome opportunity for Intern-

ships, Independent studies and class re-

search projects! The new equipment

within this facility is just AWESOME and I

can’t wait to share it with you. Finally,

there will be many more opportunities in

the Fall for students to engage with Fac-

ulty outside of class time! I am really push-

ing for more activities for you, from De-

partment cookouts to advising and library

presentations and even some really fun

competitions like the Great Urban Chal-

lenge! My goal as Department Chair is to

make sure that we offer as many opportu-

nities for your success as possible; how-

ever, please remember, no matter how

many opportunities we provide, the re-

sponsibility is still on you to take advan-

tage of them! Looking forward to seeing

you in the Fall!

Tip of the Month

I believe the best way to increase

your understanding of course ma-

terial during a semester is to visit

your Professors’ office hours!! I

believe in this so much that the

H&K Department will be DOU-

BLING faculty office hours during

the 2010-2011 Academic Year!

This time is for YOU!!! Use it!!!
