COUNCIL COMMITS
TO FULL CONSULTATION
Your local Ward Lib Dem Councillor
Darren Fower welcomed the news the city
council has now agreed to undertake full consultation on plans to introduce a
play area, situated behind homes in Gildale, in the area known as
Cuckoos Hollow, before further action is taken.
Members of the South Werrington and North Gunthorpe FOCUS
Team have, over the past few weeks been working hard on behalf of local
residents at meetings to discuss the proposals. Cllr Darren Fower raised the
issues, put to him by local people and also sent a letter, to each and every
home in Lakeside and Gildale to guarantee that they were aware of the
council’s intentions. A few weeks ago, Darren – along with other interested parties – were invited to
get involved in looking at the possibility of a play area in Cuckoos Hollow, after learning
that Werrington had been allocated funding for two potential play areas. The
understanding is that a value of the total fund is £100,000 with £50,000 being earmarked for
each project. The funding is coming from central government, via the Playbuilder
Programme. Organised nationally through the Department for Children, Schools and
Families.
Commenting, Cllr Darren Fower said, “From the start, my brief has always been
to ensure that local people are aware of the continually changing plans. The latest proposed
drawing for this area has already changed”.
“The concept is now much more about a landscaped area, rather than having play
equipment, located within the woodland between Cuckoos Hollow and the residential
areas. Residents had feared the scheme would be rushed through and whilst this may not
have been the intention of the city council, the fact remains that no decision about Cuckoos
Hollow will now be pursued, until the full consultation process has been undertaken,
alongside other
anticipated proposals.”
* Depending upon the
response the local community
gives, we could see work
on this area start late 2009.
Consultation exercise is
hoped to be completed by
March*.
* FOCUS believes it is
fundamental that the people
actually living within this area
should have their say on
whatever is planned!

Following calls for action
to the FOCUS team we can now report:- REPAIRS
have finally taken place
to the deteriorated
channels in the road along
The Steynings, leading from
Amberley Slope. Other
Roads that have recently received treatment include
Corfe Avenue & Storrington Way footpaths and
the council have assured us Staverton Road will
be resurfaced by the end of this year
ELSEWHERE:- Proposed plans for a
takeaway serving Indian food in Canterbury
Road, has finally been thrown out…. Your local
Lib Dem councillor for this area, Darren Fower,
who formally objected, told us he is now “....glad
that common sense prevailed!”
SPEEDING! Police have been monitoring
problems in recent months, along the Old Lincoln
Road & Church Street. They have promised to
discuss at the Police Panel meeting, due to be held
on 18th December 2008. Should you wish to
have your say please contact Cllr Darren Fower
who will be attending. There is a petition in
Goodman Stores (Newsagents), Lincoln Road, if
you wish to lend your support. Plus, the FOCUS
team is ‘door-knocking’ in and around the area,
gaining support for their campaign.

Residents in Ainsdale Drive & Birkdale
Avenue contacted Cllr Darren Fower about the
problem of rubbish falling out of waste and dog
dirt bins. These bins, were apparently installed at
the request of one of the Tory councillors for this
area, who completely failed to consult local
residents! Darren subsequently arranged a meeting
with those residents and the council and a new
improved waste bin will now be installed opposite
the footpath leading to Ken Stimpson School. The
dog dirt bin will be relocated onto the field.
FINALLY:- A new fence is to be installed by the
council at the rear of Campbell Drive to protect the
field. Now, the handful of unknown people who
drove their cars
onto it, will
now have to
use the CAR
PARK!
BUS STATION CHANGES……….. Following pressure from local Liberal Democrats and some environmental groups, the
developers of the massive new North Westgate shopping centre alongside Queensgate have decided to redesign the proposed new bus station.
The Lib Dem group on the city council has been holding regular meetings with representatives of the city’s urban regeneration company Opportunity Peterborough in an
attempt to ensure that, unlike some elected members, they are not ‘left out of the loop’. The
group had raised concerns about earlier designs for an ‘open plan’ new bus station which would mean that bus passengers would have to stand in the cold.
However, following pressure, the developers have now changed the plans to show that the new structure will be enclosed and therefore more comfortable for passengers.

TORY TALES IN POTTYBORO With Lib Dem national deputy leader
Vince Cable leading financial voice of reason nationally and Peterborough Lib Dems: are echoing his achievements. At the recent full council meeting the Lib Dems held the ruling Tory regime to account demanding they present their financial status. The leader of the council stated that they were “financially prudent.”. Guess what? 2 days later the city council looked set to lose £3m in the Icelandic banks chaos! The council already has millions of £’s in a contingency fund. i.e. An amount of money reserved for emergencies. So what, or why was the reason they put such a huge amount of your money in Icelandic?
Be not surprised! This same city Tory administration that spent £40k on simply looking, into the idea of a casino for our city and on personal websites for city councillors.(This amount has still not been publicly published) £3 million on transporting pupils to and from schools (for the school year 2007/08).£30k of taxpayers money to a PR company, from outside the city, to sell the idea of an incinerator to the public and last but not least £175k of local tax payers money, on installing bus lanes on the Town Bridge. Only then for the same Tory administration to eventually decide to make the lanes just temporary. That’s just in the last year!

TACKLING YOUTH CRIME National Liberal Democrats have
published their plans to tackle Youth Crime. The plan aims to deter crime and get
young people involved in positive activities that will benefit local communities. 1. Create a Youth Volunteer Force, engage with young people, involve them in community projects and give them skills to benefit them in later life. 2. Establish Community Justice Panels, where offenders admit their guilt to the community and agree on a Positive Behaviour Order as a course of action. 3. Create a dedicated Police Community Support youth officer within every Safer Neighbourhood Team, to identify and work with those teenagers most at risk of offending; 4. Put 10,000 more police on the streets using money saved by scrapping the ID cards scheme; 5. Intelligence-led stop ,search and 'hot spot policing' targeted at gun and knife crime; 6. Restorative justice programs to be run in every community specifically targeted at early intervention, with widespread use in schools and care homes.
