Local resident and FOCUS Candidate in this years local election, Sheila Walsh, says she would like to offer a big thank you, to all the residents and neighbours who gave their support to her and the FOCUS Team. As a debut candidate, Sheila impressed, by coming a close second, speaking with hundreds of people and receiving more votes than the previous Independent councillor, who had been on the council for some 30 years! Sadly, the Lib Dem FOCUS Team missed out by just 8% of the vote and we are encouraged that 63% of voters in this area did not vote Tory. Furthermore, 52% (approx.) of local residents entitled to vote, did not even bother to cast their vote!!? Commenting, Sheila said, “I would also like to say thank you to the voluntary deliverers, campaigners and supporters for their time and effort. The South Werrington & North Gunthorpe FOCUS Team will continue to keep people informed, and will be out and about in the coming weeks, completing the final quarter of the ward, as part of the 2007 residents survey, as our surveys are not just electioneering claims!” The first ever Liberal Democrat councillor for this area, Darren Fower added: “There are some good people around here and they know I am disappointed by this result. That said, we have already secured the services of new deliverers for the FOCUS and campaign helpers. I would like to thank those who supported us and we will continue to work on making the difference, holding the Tories accountable and making sure this area has a voice at the Town Hall!” * Since the election in May, we’ve secured several new volunteers to help keep you to date with what’s happening around here. POLITICS IS A FUNNY OLDGAMEThe Tories may have cancelled their secondclass postal service with the Post Office, spent£40k+ of local taxpayers money looking into aCasino for the city, even though most insiderswere confident Peterborough had no chance, increased the unfair council tax by 28 %, sincethe 2001/02 financial year, mortgaged off ourlocal schools, literarily stopped children fromhaving play time at the New Academy, sold offcommunity schools, like Bretton Woods, reduced and closed community facilities, bars, sport centres etc, spent £6 million on externalconsultants, in previous years, to give advice tosenior officers and departments, on how to dotheir jobs better?? Oh! And then they closeddown all but two public toilets in the city, spentaround £70k of tax payers money on one setof female toilets in the Town Hall and £100’sof thousands of £’s on work to “enhance” toiletsat the Car Haven and Northminster Road, withthe latter being a 136 days late and £15k overbudget. Under the Tories, we have seen 1131homelessness application received between 1April 2006 and 30 November 2006 andapplications expected to increase by some 60%,a reduction of support for the Citizens AdviceBureau and a shopping list of promises andfairytales for the future i.e. Masterplan. Yet, theTories now control over 70% of councilseats!??

FACT: Unlike the Tory and “Independent” candidates,SHEILA is the only one who lives in the ward!!!!!

STORRINGTON WAY LEFT WAITING?? Residents have complained after being left to wait on a delayed promise, by the Toryrun council, regarding resurfacing work of the pathway in Storrington Way (Werrington). Cissbury Ring and The Steynings, have already hadtheir pathways resurfaced some time ago. But residents of Storrington Way are still waiting. Speaking on the issue, Cllr Darren Fower said,“Under the Tories, this city council can make the mistake of painting double yellow lines along the road of Storrington Way, only to come backtwo days later and rectify the error. However, when it comes to action that benefits the direct community they seem less capable? Thepathways are in a disastrous state.” The issue has now been passed onto the relevant council department and the FOCUS Team has asked thatresidents are kept in form as to when action will be taken to re-surface the pathway.

CALL FOR ACTION ONOLD LINCOLN ROAD

In April 2007, Tories and “Independent” councillors forWerrington failed to support a motion by Cllr Darren Fower, calling for the City Council to look at rectifying road safetyconcerns along the Old Lincoln Road, north and south of the CockInn.

For over a decade, residents have complained of increasesin traffic, near misses, larger vehicles becoming more prevalent, talk of significant housing development in North Werrington, theneed for re-surfacing work to occur south of the Cock Inn and aneed for crossing measures as a result of the council taking awaythe lollipop lady.

Commenting, Darren said, “Many local residents findcrossing the road difficult. There are insufficient drops in the kerb, decaying pathways and no proper crossing facility. While localmotorists continue to complain of blind spots, pot holes andspeeding vehicles showing little or no regard for the VehicleActivated Signs (VAS).

“There is a need for the council to get into the practice ofprevention rather than reaction for the good of the community!”

Worth Noting:* Recently, the FOCUS Team discovered the council has nointention of using any data generated by the VAS, to determinepeak times of speeding etc!* You can now lend your support by signing the first eve on-linepetition calling for the council to take action, visit:http://campaigns.libdems.org.uk/page467
