Precautions•If your car was parked in direct sunlight

resulting in a considerable rise intemperature inside the car, allow the unit tocool off before operating it.

Moisture CondensationOn a rainy day or in a very damp area,moisture may condense on the lenses insidethe unit. Should this occur, the unit will notoperate properly. In such a case, remove thedisc and wait for about an hour until themoisture has evaporated.

To maintain high quality soundIf you have drink holders near your audioequipment, be careful not to splash juice orother soft drinks onto the unit and CD. Sugaryresidues on the unit or CD may contaminatethe lenses inside the unit, reduce the soundquality, or prevent sound reproductionaltogether.

About Video CDs and Super VCDsA compact disc that contains moving pictures.The picture data uses the MPEG 1 format(Video CD) or MPEG 2 format (Super VCD),worldwide standards of digital compressiontechnology.Video CDs and Super VCDs also containcompact audio data. Sounds outside the rangeof human hearing are compressed while thesounds we can hear are not compressed.Super VCD is recognized as the superiorstandard and this format includes many of thefeatures of DVD-Video.

There are 2 versions of Video CDs.• Version 1.1:

You can play only moving pictures andsounds.

• Version 2.0:You can play hi-resolution still pictures andenjoy PBC (Playback Control) functions.

This unit conforms to both versions.

Notes on CDsA dirty or defective disc may cause sounddropouts while playing. To enjoy optimumsound, handle the disc as follows.Handle the disc by its edge. To keep the discclean, do not touch the surface.

Do not stick paper or tape on the disc.

Do not expose the discs to direct sunlight orheat sources such as hot air-ducts, or leavethem in a car parked in direct sunlight wherethere can be a considerable rise in temperatureinside the car.

Before playing, clean the discs with an optionalcleaning cloth. Wipe each disc from the centreout.

Do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner,commercially available cleaners, or antistaticspray intended for analog discs.

Notes on discsIf you use the discs explained below, the stickyresidue can cause the CD to stop spinning andmay cause malfunction or ruin your discs.

Do not use second-hand or rental CDs thathave a sticky residue on the surface (forexample, from peeled-off stickers or from ink,or glue leaking from under the stickers).

There are paste residue.Ink is sticky.

Do not use rental CDs with old labels that arebeginning to peel off.

Stickers that arebeginning to peel away,leaving a sticky residue.

Do not use your CDs with labels or stickersattached.

Labels are attached.

Notes on CD-Rs and CD-RWs•You can play CD-Rs (recordable CDs) and

CD-RWs (rewritable CDs) on this unit.However, depending on the conditions of therecording equipment or the disc itself, somediscs may not be playable on this unit.

•You cannot play a CD-R/CD-RW disc if it isnot finalized (finalization is necessary for arecorded disc to be played on the audio CDplayer).

When you play 8 cm CDsUse the optional Sony compact disc singleadaptor (CSA-8) to protect the CD player fromdamage.

Replacing the lithium batteryWhen the battery becomes weak, the range ofthe card remote commander becomes shorter.Replace the battery with a new CR2025 lithiumbattery.

Notes on lithium battery•Keep the lithium battery out of the reach of

children. Should the battery be swallowed,immediately consult a doctor.

•Wipe the battery with a dry cloth to assure agood contact.

•Be sure to observe the correct polarity wheninstalling the battery.

•Do not hold the battery with metallictweezers, otherwise a short-circuit mayoccur.

WARNINGBattery may explode if mistreated.Do not recharge, disassemble, or dispose ofin fire.

Caution alarmIf you turn the ignition key switch to the OFFposition without removing the front panel, thecaution alarm will beep for a few seconds.If you connect an optional power amplifier anddo not use the built-in amplifier, the beepsound will be deactivated.

Getting Started

Resetting the unitBefore operating the unit for the first time orafter replacing the car battery, you must resetthe unit.Remove the front panel and press the RESETbutton with a pointed object, such as aballpoint pen.

NotePressing the RESET button will erase the clocksetting and some memorised functions.

Detaching the front panelYou can detach the front panel of this unit toprotect the unit from being stolen.

1 Press (OFF).

2 Press (OPEN), then slide the front panelto the right side, and pull out the leftside of the front panel.

Notes• Do not put anything on the inner surface of the

front panel.• Be sure not to drop the panel when detaching it

from the unit.• If you detach the panel while the unit is still

turned on, the power will turn off automaticallyto prevent the speakers from being damaged.

• When carrying the front panel with you, use thesupplied front panel case.

Turning the unit on/offTurning on the unitPress (SOURCE) or insert a CD in the unit. Fordetails on operation, refer to page 10 (CD ),page 13 (Video CD/Super VCD), and page 18(radio).

Turning off the unitPress (OFF) to stop CD playback or FM/AMreception (the key illumination and displayremain on).Press (OFF) for two seconds to completelyturn the unit off.

NoteIf your car has no ACC position on the ignition keyswitch, be sure to turn the unit off by pressing(OFF) for two seconds to avoid car battery wear.

How to use the menuThis unit is operated by selecting items from amenu.To select, first enter the menu mode andchoose up/down ((+)/(–) of (PRST)), orchoose left/right ((–)/(+) of (SEEK/AMS)).

Setting the clockThe clock uses a 12-hour digital indication.

Example: To set the clock to 10:08

1 Press (MENU), then press either side of(PRST) repeatedly until “CLOCK”appears.

1 Press (ENTER).

The hour indication flashes.

2 Press either side of (PRST) to set thehour.

3 Press the (+) side of (SEEK/AMS).

The minute indication flashes.

4 Press either side of (PRST) to set theminute.

2 Press (ENTER).

The clock starts.

After the clock setting is completed, thedisplay returns to normal play mode.

NoteIn the initial setting, the clock indication appearswhile the unit is turned off.When the D.INFO mode is set to ON, the time isalways displayed (page 22).

The operating procedure of Video CDs/SuperVCDs is different from that of CDs. For details,refer to page 13 (Video CD/Super VCD).

Listening to a CD

1 Press (OPEN) and insert the disc.

2 Close the front panel.Playback starts automatically.

If a disc is already inserted, press (SOURCE)repeatedly until “CD” appears to startplayback.

When the last track on the disc isoverThe track number indication returns to “1,”and playback restarts from the first track of thedisc.

2 Press (ENTER).

Video CD/Super VCD

The operating procedure of CDs is differentfrom that of Video CDs/Super VCDs. Fordetails, refer to page 10 (CD).

Watching a Video CD/Super VCDDepending on the Video CD/Super VCD,some operations may be different or restricted.Refer to the instructions supplied with yourdisc.

NoteThis unit switches the colour system, PAL/NTSC,according to the TV. (See “Changing the soundand display settings” on page 22.)

1 Turn on the connected mobile colour TVand select the video input so that youcan view the pictures from this unit.

2 Press (OPEN) and insert the disc.

3 Close the front panel.Playback starts automatically.

TipThe menu screen may appear on the TV screen,depending on the Video CD/Super VCD. To playthe disc interactively, follow the instructions onthe menu screen. (See “PBC (Playback Control)functions” on page 14.)

If a disc is already inserted, press (SOURCE)repeatedly until “VCD”/“SVCD” appears tostart playback.

PBC (Playback Control) functionsWhen playing Video CDs (Ver. 2.0)/ SuperVCDs with PBC functions, you can enjoysimple interactive operations, operations withsearch functions, etc.PBC playback allows you to play Video CDs/Super VCDs interactively, following the menuon the TV screen.

1 Start playing a Video CD/Super VCD withPBC functions.

2 Press (PBC ON/OFF) on the card remotecommander.

3 Press either side of (PRST) to select theitem number you want.Press the (–) side of (SEEK/AMS) to returnto the previous menu screen, and press the(+) side of (SEEK/AMS) to go to the nextmenu.

4 Press (SELECT/ENTER) on the cardremote commander or (ENTER) on theunit.Follow the menu instructions on the screenfor interactive operations.

During playback, press (RTN) on the cardremote commander to return to the precedingselection screen.

Notes• Refer to the instructions supplied with the disc,

as the operating procedure may differ accordingto the Video CD/Super VCD.

• When the PBC function is turned off, playbackrestarts from the first track of the disc.

• When you replace the disc, the PBC function willbe turned off.

Selecting the language (Super VCDonly)With Super VCDs on which bilingual soundsare recorded, you can select the language youwant while playing the Super VCD.

Displaying the subtitle language(Super VCD only)With Super VCDs on which multilingualsubtitles are recorded, you can change thesubtitles whenever you want while playing theSuper VCD.

3 Press the (+) side of (SEEK/AMS) to selectthe subtitle language.Each time you press the (+) side of(SEEK/AMS), the subtitle changes asfollows:

Changing the soundsSome discs are recorded in MultiplexBroadcast with different sounds recorded onthe left and right channels. For these discs,select the channel that plays the sound youwant to hear. The selected sound will beplayed from both speakers.


2 Press either side of (PRST) repeatedlyuntil “STEREO” appears.

3 Press the (+) side of (SEEK/AMS) to selectthe sound.Each time you press (+) side of(SEEK/AMS), the item changes as follows:

Creating a programme— Programme Memory

Memorising only thedesired stationsYou can preset up to 18 FM stations (6 each forFM1, FM2, and FM3), up to 12 AM stations (6each for AM1 and AM2) in the order of yourchoice.

1 Press (SOURCE) repeatedly to select thetuner.

2 Press (MODE) repeatedly to select theband.

3 Press either side of (SEEK/AMS) to tunein the station that you want to store onthe number button.

4 Press the desired number button ((1) to(6)) for two seconds until “MEM”appears.The number button indication appears inthe display.

NoteIf you try to store another station on the samenumber button, the previously stored station willbe erased.

Memorising stationsautomatically— Best Tuning Memory (BTM)

The unit selects the stations with the strongestsignals and memorises them in the order oftheir frequencies. You can store up to 6 stationson each band (FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, andAM2).

• If a CD is not in the unit, only the tuner bandappears even if you press (SOURCE).

Receiving the memorisedstations

1 Press (SOURCE) repeatedly to select thetuner.

2 Press (MODE) repeatedly to select theband.

3 Press the number button ((1) to (6)) onwhich the desired station is stored.

TipPress either side of (PRST) to receive the stationsin the order they are stored in the memory (PresetSearch Function).

If you cannot tune in a presetstation

Press either side of (SEEK/AMS) to searchfor the station (automatic tuning).Scanning stops when the unit receives astation. Press either side of (SEEK/AMS)repeatedly until the desired station isreceived.

NoteIf the automatic tuning stops too frequently, press(MENU), then press either side of (PRST)repeatedly until “LOCAL” (local seek mode) isdisplayed. Then press the (+) side of (SEEK/AMS) toselect “LOCAL-ON.” Press (ENTER).Only the stations with relatively strong signals willbe tuned in.

Tips• When you select the “LOCAL-ON” setting,

“L.SEEK” appears while the unit is searching fora station.

• If you know the frequency of the station youwant to listen to, press and hold either side of(SEEK/AMS) until the desired frequency appears(manual tuning).

If FM stereo reception is poor— Monaural Mode

1 During radio reception, press (MENU),then press either side of (PRST)repeatedly until “MONO-OFF” appears.

2 Press the (+) side of (SEEK/AMS) until“MONO-ON” appears.The sound improves, but becomesmonaural (“ST” disappears).

3 Press (ENTER).

To return to normal mode, select“MONO-OFF” in step 2.

In the Motion Display mode, all the items arescrolled in the display one by one in order.

Using the rotarycommanderThe rotary commander works by pressingbuttons and/or rotating controls.

Adjusting the soundcharacteristicsYou can adjust the bass, treble, balance, andfader.You can store the bass and treble levelsindependently for each source.

Attenuating the sound

Press (ATT) on the rotary commander orcard remote commander.“ATT-ON” lights up for a while.

To restore the previous volume level, press(ATT) again.

TipWhen the interface cable of a car telephone isconnected to the ATT lead, the unit decreases thevolume automatically when a telephone call comesin (Telephone ATT function).

Changing the sound anddisplay settingsThe following items can be set:

Boosting the bass sound— D-bass

You can enjoy a clear and powerful basssound.The D-bass function boosts the low and highfrequency signal with a sharper curve thanconventional bass boost.You can hear the bass line more clearly evenwhile the vocal volume remains the same. Youcan emphasize and adjust the bass soundeasily with the D-BASS button.

Adjusting the bass curve

Press (D-BASS) repeatedly until thedesired bass level (1, 2, or 3) appears inthe display.

To cancel, select “D.BASS-OFF.”

Cleaning the connectorsThe unit may not function properly if theconnectors between the unit and the frontpanel are not clean. In order to prevent this,open the front panel by pressing (OPEN), thendetach it and clean the connectors with acotton swab dipped in alcohol. Do not applytoo much force. Otherwise, the connectors maybe damaged.

Dismounting the unit

1 Press the clip inside the front cover witha thin screwdriver, and gently pry thefront cover free.

2 Repeat step 1 on the left side.The front cover is removed.

3 Use a thin screwdriver to push in the clipon the left side of the unit, then pull outthe left side of the unit until the catchclears the mounting.

4 Repeat step 3 on the right side.

5 Slide the unit out of the mounting.

Troubleshooting guideThe following checklist will help you remedy the problems you may encounter with your unit.Before going through the checklist below, check the connection and operating procedures.

Problem

No sound.

The contents of the memoryhave been erased.

Indications do not appear in thedisplay.

No beep sound.

Cause/Solution

•Cancel the ATT function.•Set the fader control to the centre position for two-speaker

system.•Rotate the dial clockwise to adjust the volume.

•The power cord or battery has been disconnected.•The RESET button has been pressed.t Store again into the memory.

Con el fin de evitarlo, abrael panel frontal presionando (OPEN), acontinuación, sepárelo y limpie los conectorescon un bastoncillo humedecido en alcohol. Desmontaje de la unidad

1 Presione el clip del interior de la cubiertafrontal con un destornillador fino, ylibere dicha cubierta con suavidad.

2 Repita el paso 1 en el lado izquierdo.La cubierta frontal podrá extraerse.

3 Emplee un destornillador fino parapresionar el clip de la parte izquierda dela unidad; a continuación, tire del ladoizquierdo de la unidad hasta que elenganche salga del marco.

Ausencia de sonido.

Se ha borrado el contenido dela memoria.

•Cancele la función ATT.•Ajuste el control de equilibrio entre los altavoces en la

posición central para sistemas de 2 altavoces.•Gire el dial en el sentido de las agujas del reloj para ajustar el
