Week 1 — Tivy 46, Fredericksburg 0

Tivy rolls in season opener

FReDeRICKSBURG — It tookTivy quarterback Parks Mcneilfour incomplete passes to get his

rhythm. After that, Fredericksburg wastoast.

Mcneil, making his first varsity start, rebounded from those early misfires to

complete 14 of hisnext 19 throws for230 yards and fourtouchdowns, and sen-ior running backJacob Camarilloadded a pair of scor-ing runs and a touch-down catch as theAntlers rolled past theovermatched Billies46-0 Friday night inboth teams’ 2011 sea-son opener at Battlin’Billies Stadium.

Camarillo finishedthe night with 98yards of total offense, helping key an Antlerattack that blisteredFredericksburg for589 yards, whileTivy’s defense limitedthe Billies to just 131total yards and turned

back Fredericksburg’s lone scoring threatwith a three-play goal-line stand at the 1-yard line midway through the first half.

38-yarder late in the second quarter thatset up a 1-yard touchdown run by ColtonTucker just before halftime.

“I see a lot of good things coming outof our offense,” Tivy coach Mark Smithsaid. “I think it will continue to grow andget better and better, and no doubt I hopeit will give our whole team some momen-tum and a lot of confidence.”

That confidence grew early Friday. After its first drive sputtered, Tivy scoredon its next four possessions while limit-ing Fredericksburg to minus 16 yards onthe Billies’ first four series. Mcneiltossed a 3-yard touchdown pass toCamarillo at the 7:19 mark to get theAntlers on the scoreboard, and foundsophomore wideout Tyler Ahrens openover the middle five plays into Tivy’snext series for a 30-yard scoring strike. Will Cowden’s two extra point kicks putthe Antlers up 14-0.

“This was my first starting varsitygame,” Mcneil said. “It was a little bitslow in the beginning, but once I gotsome confidence going I was able to hit

those touchdowns.”Tivy scored twice

more before the quar-ter was over.Camarillo turned ashort pass fromMcneil into a tackle-busting 21-yard touch-down catch with 3:08left in the period, andsenior Kason Fornesdid the same on theAntlers’ next posses-sion, hauling in asideline pass andweaving all the wayacross the field beforecutting back up themiddle for a 46-yardscoring romp. Cowdenfollowed both TDswith successful PATsto put Tivy ahead28-0 at the end of thequarter.

Fredericksburg threatened to score forthe first and only time of the night whenPaco Martinez returned the ensuing kick-

off 81 yards to the Antler 4-yard linebefore Tivy’s Kenny edmonds deniedhim a score with a touchdown-savingtackle. Fredericksburg quarterback DillonReeh then moved the Billies to the 1 witha 3-yard run, but Tivy’s defense turnedback the Billies’ next three stabs at thegoal.

“You have to start first with Kenny

edmonds not giving up on the kickoffreturn,” Smith said of the stand. “Heturned on the jets and made a good stop, and it gave us an opportunity. When youget goal line stops like that, that’s a bigmomentum swing for you.”

Tucker’s 1-yard touchdown run at theend of the second quarter sent Tivy intothe break leading 34-0, and Camarillo

added a 10-yard TD run late in the thirdquarter to make it a 40-0 game.

Mcneil found senior Braedon White allalone down the right sideline for theAntlers’ final score, a 31-yard touchdownconnection three minutes into the fourthquarter that capped the night at 46-0.

Tucker added 144 passing yards toTivy’s offensive total, Ahrens finishedwith four catches for 91 yards, and Forneshauled in three passes for 82 yards.

Senior Ferris owens led Tivy’s defensewith 10 tackles, Jaden Ayala recorded twosacks, and Brennon Scheidle recovered aFredericksburg fumble.

Week 2 — Tivy 48, San Antonio Madison 7

In a series dominated by high-scoringaffairs, Tivy’s offense was only toohappy to continue the tradition.

The Antlers’ defense, however, was hav-ing none of it.

Tivy quarterback Parks Mcneil spear-headed a 484-yard offensive showing bythe Antlers, rushing and passing for 395yards and seven touchdowns, while Tivy’sdefense held no. 9 area-ranked Class 5ASan Antonio Madison to a solo third-quar-ter touchdown in a 48-7 rout of the visitingMavericks Friday night in non-districtaction at Antler Stadium.

Tivy limited Madison to 68 first-halfrushing yards and held Maverick runningback Marquis Warford, who was comingoff a 193-yard rushing effort againstCibolo Steele a week earlier, to just 84yards on the ground in improving to 2-0 onthe year.

The Antlers forced four turnovers on thenight, with senior linebacker Ferris owensrecording an interception and a fumblerecovery. Senior Zach Qualls also pickedoff a pass, and Alan Young set up a firstquarter Tivy scoring drive with a fumblerecovery.

keys and going,” owens said of theAntlers’ defense, which gave up 69 pointsto Madison three years ago and 34 in lastyear’s meeting, but has surrendered justseven points in two games this year.“When we see something in the game orwhen people try to change things, we canshift on the fly and just go.”

Mcneil, operating behind a solid frontline, was nearly flawless early Friday asTivy scored on its first three possessions, and would have added more points on thefourth if not for an off-target field goalattempt. Mcneil’s 60-yard touchdown runless than two minutes into play and WillCowden’s extra-point kick gave theAntlers a quick 7-0 lead, and Tivy drove65 yards on its second series, a nine-playaffair capped by a 3-yard touchdown pass

from Mcneil to Jacob Camarillo.Cowden’s PAT extended the Antlers’ leadto 14-0 with 5:25 left in the first quarter.

Tivy’s defense limitedMadison to just 12 yards onthe Mavericks’ first series, andforced a turnover on the sec-ond when Young chased downa Maverick fumble at theAntler 38-yard line. Six playslater, Mcneil cracked the goalline on a 12-yard touchdownrun with 3:25 left in the quar-ter, though the Antlers’ edgestayed at 20-0 after Madisonblocked Cowden’s PAT kick.

owens and Qualls kept the Mavericks atbay in the second quarter with two take-aways, and Mcneil found Camarillo openon a 6-yard scoring toss in the final minutethat, along with Camarillo’s 2-point con-version run, sent Tivy into halftime leading28-0.

“We came out of the chutes last Monday

and worked hard all week, because weknew what we were facing,” Mcneil said.“We just prepared, prepared, prepared. We

tried not to look at the scoreboard inthe first half and just kept poundingaway.”

Mcneil added another scoringrun on a 1-yard dive midwaythrough the third quarter, andCowden’s PAT made it a 35-0 game before Madisonfinally dented the score-board. Justin Jones’ 29-yardTD pass to Shawn Mullerwith 2:54 left in the thirdquarter and Garrett Karlson’s

PAT kick cut the Maverick’s deficitto 35-7, but the Antlers came rightback with an 11-yard touchdownpass from Mcneil to Braedon Whitein the final 14 seconds of the quarterfor a 41-7 lead after Madison blocked theextra point.

Mcneil, who finished the evening 21-of-

32 passing for 197 yards, threw his fourthtouchdown pass on Tivy’s next possession,

a 17-yarder over the middleto Tyler Ahrens, andCowden’s PAT capped thescoring at 48-7.

Mcneil added 198 yards tolead the Antlers’ rushingattack, while White pacedTivy’s receivers with sevencatches for 69 yards andKason Fornes added fivegrabs for 48 yards.

The Antlers return to actionFriday against defending

Class 5A Division II state championCibolo Steele (2-0). Game time is 7:30p.m. at Lehnhoff Stadium in Cibolo.

Week 3 — Cibolo Steele 38, Tivy 26

CIBoLo — What Cibolo Steelecouldn’t get done in three yearswith former All-State turned

University of Texas running backMalcolm Brown, the Knights accom-plished Friday night with the big play.

or rather a trio of big plays. The defending Class 5A Division II

state champions, playing for the first timein their four-year series against Tivy with-out Brown, rode three long scoring plays, including a 69-yard touchdown pass onthe final snap of the first half, to a 38-26win over the Antlers in non-district actionat Lehnhoff Stadium — Steele’s first-evervictory against Tivy.

In a clash of state-ranked powers, theno. 6 Knights rallied twice from behindin the first half to lead 14-10 at the break, then watched no. 9-ranked Tivy comefrom behind twice in the second half toknot the score at 24-24 midway throughthe fourth quarter before Steele put thegame away with a 14-2 edge in the clos-ing minutes in improving to 3-0.

“We played a good team and we madesome crucial errors at key times,” Tivycoach Mark Smith said after watching histeam drop to 2-1 in a sometimes error-filled performance that saw the Antlersthrow two interceptions and get whistledfor six penalties, including a big personalfoul call on an early fourth-quarter Steelescoring drive. “The pass before halftime,a personal foul on a fair catch — thingslike that are where we have to grow upand get better. We needed something likethis to find out what we’re truly about.”

Tivy grabbed a 7-0 first-quarter leadafter a beautifully executed 11-play open-ing series that saw junior quarterbackParks Mcneil complete four passes tothree different receivers before scoring ona 1-yard plunge at the 8:37 mark.

Bradley Mitchell’s extra-point kick wasgood, but Steele quickly showed its big-play capabilites when sophomore runningback Justin Stockton busted a handoffoutside and down the right sideline for a68-yard scoring romp. evan Kotzur’sPAT kick knotted the contest at 7-7.

Defense took over from there, withSteele intercepting a pass and driving tothe Tivy 16, only to see a field goalattempt blocked by the Antlers. Tivy also

ended a Steele driveearly in the secondquarter when defen-sive back Jaymeozuna fell on aKnight fumble, butthe Antlers couldn’tscore again until latein the half, this timeafter driving 71 yardsin nine plays.Mitchell’s 35-yardfield goal with just :06

remaining put Tivy up 10-7 heading intothe break.

or so it seemed. In a stunning turn-around, Steele quarterback TommyArmstrong dropped back into the pocketand launched a 69-yard rainbow toMatthew Mayle, who hauled in the passin stride at the goal line as the quarterexpired, and Kotzur’s kick gave theKnights a 14-10 halftime edge.

Steele upped its leadto 17-10 on its firstpossession of the thirdquarter when Kotzurdrilled a 37-yard fieldgoal, but Tivy cameright back. SeniorColton Tucker, replac-ing Mcneil at quarter-back, completed fourconsecutive passes, including three toKason Fornes for 30

yards and one to Jacob Camarillo for 13,

to fuel a 68-yard drive that Tucker cappedwith a 7-yard touchdown pass to Fornes.Mitchell’s PAT pulled Tivy even at 17-17.

Armstrong broke loose for a 48-yardscoring run late in the quarter and a 24-17Steele lead, but Tucker knotted the con-test at 24-24 midway through the fourthquarter with a 41-yard touchdown run upthe middle that saw him beat a trio ofKnight defenders to the goal.

Steele answered on its next series after aTivy personal foul penalty on the kickoffgave the Knights good field position atthe Steele 46-yard line. Five plays later,Jordan Stern’s leaping dive into the end-zone put Steele back on top 30-24, but theKnights’ extra point attempt went awry on

a bad snap. Tivy’s T.K. Walzer scoopedup the loose ball and returned it 65 yardsfor 2 points, cutting the Antlers’ deficit to30-26.

Unfortunately, Tivy wouldn’t get anycloser. Stockton, who finished the nightwith a game-high 192 yards rushing on 17carries, scored his second touchdownwith 3:39 left to play, and Armstrongadded a 2-point run that put the Knightsup by a comfortable 38-26 margin.

Steele then held Tivy’s final drive tofour plays, and drove to the Antler 9-yardline in the closing minute before kneelingout the clock.

“We did a lot of good things, and we hada chance going into the fourth quarter to

win it,” Smith said. “We just let it getaway from us.”

Armstrong rushed for 143 yards andcompleted six passes for 122 yards to leada 515-yard offensive showing by Steele.

Tucker finished 16-of-29 passing for148 yards and ran for 42 more, andMcneil added eight completions for 65yards and nine carries for another 55.

Fornes paced Tivy’s receivers with eightcatches for 82 yards, while Mayle ledSteele with four receptions for 100 yards.

Tivy returns home Friday to facedefending Class 4A Division I statechampion and no. 1-ranked Lake Travis(3-0). Game time is 7:30 p.m. at AntlerStadium.

Week 4 — Lake Travis 56, Tivy 14

In a dominating performance, four-timedefending Class 4A state championLake Travis showed clearly why an

unprecedented fifth title may be its for thetaking later this fall.

The no. 1-ranked Cavaliers, led by a436-yard offensive performance from jun-ior quarterback Baker Mayfield, disman-tled no. 9-ranked Tivy Friday night, scor-ing four touchdowns in a seven-minutespan in the second quarter en route to aneventual 56-14 pounding of the Antlers innon-district action at Antler Stadium.

Mayfield threw for 303 yards and threescores and ran for another 133 yards andtwo touchdowns, and senior wide receiverGriffin Gilbert accounted for 155 yardsand two TDs as the Cavaliers improvedto 4-0 and handed Tivy its worst defeat in20 years.

Lake Travis rolled up 643 yards of totaloffense while holding the Antlers to 254— Tivy’s lowest output in a game since2006 — and picked off four passes.

“That’s what you call a good ol’ butt-kicking,” said Tivy coach Mark Smith, who was still an assistant coach at Seguinthe last time an Antler team lost by 42 ormore points, a 53-7 setback against AustinWestlake in Tivy’s 1991 season opener.“We haven’t been on the end of those in along time. They’re a good football team, and we definitely didn’t play well enoughto win.”

came late in the quarter when Tivy defen-sive lineman Randel o’Bryant pulleddown a tipped pass and rumbled 49 yardsfor a touchdown with 17 seconds remain-ing. Brad Mitchell’s game-tying PAT kickknotted the score at 7-7, but the Antlers

wouldn’t be close again as LakeTravis scored on its next fourpossessions to take a command-ing 35-7 halftime lead. SeniorColin Lagasse started the flurrywith a 2-yard touchdown run lessthan a minute into the secondquarter, and set up a second scoreon the Cavaliers’ next series witha 62-yard run to the Tivy 11-yardline. Sophomore Varshaun nixonscampered the remaining dis-tance on the next snap to make it

a 21-7 game.

Mayfield added a 21-yard scoring runwith six minutes left in the quarter, andfound Zach Austin open for a 55-yardtouchdown pass with 4:47 left until half-time.

Tivy got untracked on its first possessionof the third quarter, marching 77 yards in12 plays. Mcneil capped the series with a2-yard touchdown keeper, but Lake Travisended any Antler comeback hopes fourplays later when Mayfield found Gilbertopen over the middle for a 33-yard TDpass and a 42-14 lead.

Mayfield added a 2-yard scoring runwith 1:00 left in the quarter, and ZachJoiner capped the Cavaliers’ output with a6-yard touchdown run with 8:21 remain-ing in the fourth quarter.

“We showed tonight that we have a waysto go,” Smith said. “Hopefully we can get

back to the team we saw against Madison(a 48-7 Tivy victory Sept. 2). That’s whatwe need to work toward. We just have tofind a way to get back up off the ground, but knowing these kids and what they’reabout, I think we’ll find a way.”

Mcneil finished the night with 111 rush-ing yards, and senior Jacob Camarilloadded another 67 on 10 carries to lead a173-yard rushing night for the Antlers.

Lagasse totalled 93 yards on the groundfor Lake Travis and nixon chipped in 51yards.

With Friday’s setback, Tivy capped non-district play at 2-2. The Antlers beginDistrict 28-4A action Friday at Uvalde.Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Week 5 — Tivy 54, Uvalde 7

UVALDe — After two weeks offrustrating losses to a pair ofdefending state champions, Tivy

headed to Uvalde last Friday on a mission... and the unfortunate host Coyotes paidthe price.

Antler quarterback Parks Mcneil threwthree touchdowns in the first quarter alone,

sophomore TylerAhrens added threescores in relief undercenter, and Tivyshrugged off the pasttwo weeks’ disap-pointment with a 54-7thrashing of Uvalde inboth teams’ District28-4A opener at theHoney Bowl.

The Antlers rolledup 404 yards of

offense in the first half alone and scored onsix of their first seven possessions inbuilding a 41-7 halftime lead, while Tivy’sdefense held Uvalde’s initial four series tojust 15 yards as the Antlers began theirdefense of 2010’s 6-0 run to a District28-4A title in impressive fashion.

“We’ve got a good football team, but wejust went through a stretch where we did-n’t play well enough against Lake Travisand (Cibolo) Steele,” Tivy coach MarkSmith said following Friday’s blowout.“They were two good football teams, andthere’s no doubt our non-district schedulehelped get us ready for the district battlesahead. ons, and we need to act like it and play likeit.”

Tivy did just that against Uvalde, scoringfour plays into its first possession whenMcneil found Braedon White wide openbehind the Coyote secondary for a 39-yardtouchdown pass. Brad Mitchell’s extra-point kick gave the Antlers a quick 7-0lead.

Mcneil hooked up with senior KasonFornes on Tivy’s next two series, hittingthe 6-foot wideout for touchdown passesof 9 and 16 yards, and Ahrens, stepping inat quarterback in the second quarter, found

Fornes open again for a 49-yard scoringpass and a 28-0 Antler lead with 6:36 stillleft until halftime.

“Kason is one of the best route-running receivers I’ve evercoached or been around,” Smithsaid. “He does a great job, andhe wants to score every time hetouches the ball. If we just keepgetting the ball in his hands, he’sgoing to do something with it.”

Ahrens took over from there, closing the half with a pair oftouchdown runs, the first a 1-yarder and the second a 15-yardromp in the final seconds thatsaw him hurdle Uvalde’s final defenderjust before crossing the goal line.

“I just took off running and got some

great blocking,” Ahrens said of the TD,which sent Tivy into the break up 41-0. “Isaw the guy at the end and just kind of

jumped for it, and it worked out.”The Antlers backed off in the

second half, throwing just onepass over the final two quarters, but still put up points on Mitchellfield goals of 22 and 27 yardsand a 55-yard interception returnfor a touchdown by nardoAlmendariz midway through thethird quarter.

Uvalde avoided a shutout in thefinal 1:39 when Cory Raley con-nected with Jaryd Murdock on a

10-yard touchdown pass.“You hate to give up a score, but the kids

ought to feel good, and I feel good about

where we’re at,” Smith said. “We just haveto continue to get better.”

Mcneil finished the night with 167 yardspassing on nine completions and added101 yards rushing on six carries, whileAhrens chipped in 119 yards rushing on13 totes and competed four of five passesfor 97 yards.

Fornes led Tivy’s receivers with fourcatches for 97 yards, White finished withthree catches for 67 yards, and Ahrenshauled in three passes for 59 yards.

Week 6 — Tivy 28, San Antonio McCollum 0

Without a doubt, San AntonioMcCollum’s unbeaten recordwas a motivating factor for

Tivy Friday night.“Knowing that they were coming into

our home 5-0 gave me goose bumps,”Antler senior Jacob Camarillo said. “Weknew that we were going to be the teamthat beat them, and we were going toscore more than 14 points doing it.”

Camarillo did hispart, ripping off a 68-yard touchdown runin the second quarterthat swung momen-tum in a close gameTivy’s way, and soph-omore Tyler Ahrensadded 126 rushingyards and three touch-downs in his firstvarsity start as theAntlers knocked

McCollum from the unbeaten ranks, 28-0,in District 28-4A action at AntlerStadium.

Tivy’s defense, which came close to ashutout a week earlier against Uvalde, held McCollum to just three yards on theCowboys’ first three series and a season-low 265 yards on the night, and recordedtwo turnovers on a fumble recovery byJosh Sutherlin and a fourth-quarter inter-ception by Ferris owens as the Antlers’moved atop the 28-4A standings with a 2-0record and improved to 4-2 on the year.

more than 14 points in any of its first fiveoutings, dropped to 1-1 in loop play and5-1 overall.

“I’m pretty happy with the way we’replaying right now,” Tivy coach MarkSmith said. “McCollum’s a good footballteam, and I feel good about doing whatwe did tonight. We’ve still got a fewthings to get better at, but we can be asgood as any team we’ve had here.”

Tivy’s opening drive stalled at theMcCollum 21, but Ahrens moved theAntlers 56 yards on their second series, hitting Kason Fornes for a 33-yard gainand Braedon White for another 12 beforescoring on a 4-yard run with 5:53 left inthe first quarter. Brad Mitchell’s first offour extra-point kicks put Tivy up 7-0.

Camarillo upped the Antlers’ edge earlyin the second quarter, taking a first-downhandoff outside and down the right side-line for a 68-yard TD romp that movedTivy’s lead to 14-0.

“We were struggling offensively andneeded something to happen at that

point,” Smith said. “We ran a little powerplay and he took it (to the end-zone). It was good to see Jacobbreak out a little bit.”

Ahrens’ 10-yard touchdownrun with 2:27 left in the quartermade it a 21-0 game, and theAntlers took that lead into half-time after a late McCollumdrive to the Tivy 12 ran out oftime.

Tivy capped the night’s scor-ing on its first possession ofthe third quarter, moving 48yards in nine plays. Ahrens rushed for

gains of 13, 14 and 11 yards and foundFornes open for an 11-yard completionbefore reaching the endzone on 2-yardrun at the 7:26 mark.

“I had great blocking from my line anddownfield from my receivers all nightlong,” Ahrens said. “All I had to do wasfollow the blockers and it was right there. The line kept opening up big holes, and Iwould have had to be blind to miss them.”

McCollum threatened just once moredown the stretch, moving to afourth-and-1 at the Tivy 10 on thefirst play of the fourth quarter, buta bad snap and 15-yard tackle fora loss of Cowboy quarterbackAlex Rios by Tivy’s nardoAlmendariz ended the Cowboys’best scoring chance. McCollumnever got out of its own end ofthe field again.

Week 7 — Tivy 37, San Antonio Brennan 31

SAn AnTonIo — After spotting SanAntonio Brennan a two-touchdownlead Saturday night, Tivy needed

every big play it had to knock off theupstart Bears.

Fortunately, the Antlers got just enoughto win.

Tivy quarterback Parks Mcneil threw forthree touchdowns and ran for a fourth, defensive back nardo Almendariz chalked

up a key fourth-quarterfumble recovery, andsophomore Josh Appelbatted away a last-ditch fourth-downpass by Brennan quar-terback Dillon Gatianwith just over a minuteto play as the Antlersrallied to knock off theBears, 37-31, in a bat-tle of District 28-4Aunbeatens at the Dub

Farris Athletic Complex.Senior Kason Fornes hauled in two

touchdowns, and Jacob Camarillo added104 yards rushing, including a 26-yardscoring romp in the second quarter thatjump-started the Antlers’ comeback asTivy improved to 3-0 in district play andmoved into sole possession of first place inthe district standings with three loop gamesremaining.

Brennan dropped to 2-1 in 28-4A actionand 4-2 overall.

“I’m proud of our kids and their resilien-cy and the way they fought back,” Tivycoach Mark Smith said after the Antlersgift-wrapped a pair of early scoring drivesfor Brennan. Back-to-back interceptionsby the Bears’ Fabian Acuna and GrantWatanabe on Tivy’s first two series led toscoring runs of 3 yards by Jesse Jenkinsand 4 yards by Joshua Luna, the latter put-ting Brennan up 14-0 with 5:15 remainingin the first quarter.

“They could have really cratered there inthe first quarter when we went down 14-0,but they found a way to fight back andmake the plays we needed to win thisgame,” Smith said.

Tivy began making up ground in the sec-ond quarter when Camarillo capped a nine-

play, 79-yard series with his 26-yard scor-ing dash at the 8:11 mark, but the Antlers’deficit stayed at 14-6 after Brennanblocked the extra-point kick.

Mcneil and Fornes hooked up for theirfirst touchdown of the night five minuteslater, a 12-yard pass that Mcneil followedwith a 2-point conversion run to knot thescore at 14-14.

Brennan regained the lead two plays laterwhen Aaron Beaugard took a sweep 64yards down the right sideline, but a 47-yarddash by Camarillo on Tivy’s next series set

up a 4-yard touchdown run by Mcneilwith 1:44 left in the quarter, and BradMitchell’s PAT kick sent the two teams intohalftime tied at 21-21.

The back-and-forth struggle continued inthe second half. Mitchell nailed a 24-yardfield goal midway through the third quarterto put Tivy ahead 24-21, and the Antlersturned back a Brennan drive at the Tivy 13-yard line later in the period when JesseHernandez recovered a Bear fumble, butBrennan’s David Gonzales knotted thegame again with a 20-yard field goal at the

7:41 mark of the fourth quarter. It took Tivy just three plays to pull ahead

when Mcneil found Tyler Ahrens slantingover the middle for an 83-yard touchdownpass. Ahrens fought off a hold by aBrennan defensive back to make the catch, then outraced the Bears’ secondary to theendzone for the score.

Mitchell’s extra-point kick put Tivy up31-24, but the Antlers hadn’t even caughttheir breath before Brennan’s Cameron

Crockett hauled in the ensuing kickoff andtook it 71 yards to paydirt. Gonzales’ PATagain pulled the Bears even at 31-31.

Brennan threatened again after Watanabeintercepted Mcneil at the Tivy 32 with5:07 left to play, but Luna coughed up theball two plays later and Almendarizpounced on it to give the Antlers new hope.

“I saw him (Luna) coming my way, and Iwas just trying to get off my block and

make the tackle when I saw the ball comeloose,” Almendariz said. “Fortunately Iwas able to get on it.”

Tivy made the most of the gift three playslater when Mcneil hit Fornes over the mid-dle for a 65-yard touchdown and a 37-31edge.

“Kason is our go-to-guy,” Mcneil said.“When you’re in trouble, he’s the guy youlook for, and he came through big for us.”

The Antlers’ extra-point attempt sailedwide, opening the door for a Brennan win,and the Bears promptly marched from theirown 35 to a second-and-6 at the Tivy 28,but a 3-yard loss on second down and an

incompletion on third down put the Bearsin a fourth-and-9 hole with justunder two minutes to play.Gatian then tried to find an openreceiver down the right sideline, but Appel knocked the passaway at the last second and Tivywas able to run out the clock forthe victory.

“I thought this would be atough, hard-fought game and itwas,” Smith said. “Brennan wasprepared, and they gave useverything we needed andeverything we wanted. Hopefully this will

help us.”Mcneil finished the night with eight

completions for 199 yards and addedanother 165 yards rushing to lead the

Week 8 — Tivy 53, Medina Valley 13

Kason Fornes looked slightlyuncomfortable with a crown onhis head, an accoutrement

required after being named Tivy’s 2011homecoming king during Friday’s pre-game activities.

The 6-foot senior wide receiver lookedmuch more at home with a football in hishands.

Fornes hauled in five passes for 118yards and three touch-downs and took anend-around 33 yardsfor a fourth score, andthe Antlers wrappedup a 15th consecutiveplayoff berth with alopsided 53-13 pound-ing of Medina Valleyin District 28-4Aaction at AntlerStadium.

Junior Parks Mcneilpassed for 222 yards and four touchdownsand ran for a fifth, and Tivy’s defenserecorded six turnovers — three intercep-tions and three fumble recoveries — as theAntlers stayed unbeaten atop the 28-4Astandings at 4-0 and improved to 6-2 onthe year.

“It’s always nice to get those earlypoints,” Tivy coach Mark Smith said afterhis team scored on five of seven first-halfpossessions, including four in a row inbuilding a 35-6 halftime edge. “I think alot of times our kids feed off of ouroffense. I don’t like it to be that way, but Ithink they kind of do, and when our of-fense starts fast, I think it gets everybodymore into the game. no doubt when youcan jump out early, its a good thing.”

Mcneil started Tivy’s homecomingparty early, hitting senior Jacob Camarilloall alone down the middle for a 67-yardtouchdown pass just three plays into theAntlers’ opening possession. The first ofBrad Mitchell’s six extra-point kicks putTivy up 7-0.

The turnover bug that plagued MedinaValley all night hit the Panthers later in thequarter when Steven DeLaFuentecoughed up the ball after making a 10-yard catch at the Tivy 35-yard line.

Mcneil quickly dialed Fornes for a 15-yard passing gain and added two runs foranother 17 yards before Fornes took ahandoff 33 yards down the sideline for atouchdown and a 14-0 Antler lead with3:51 left in the first quarter.

“Kason’s a special kid,” Smith said ofFornes, who reached the endzone on fourof the seven times he touched the balloffensively. “He’s got a nose for the end-zone, and he’s got better speed than peo-ple realize. He does a great job of runningroutes and finding open space. He under-

stands how to find theopen holes in coverages. When the quarterback canget him the ball, he can doa lot of good things withit.”

Tivy found itself with theball again less than aminute later after seniorlinebacker Ferris owenspicked off a Medina Valleypass, and Mcneil neededjust one snap to find

Fornes open over the middle on a 47-yard TD strike. Mitchell’s PAT kickput the Antlers ahead 21-0 headinginto the second quarter.

Another Medina Valley turnover, this one a fumble by Adam Stein thatDiego Heredia recovered at the Tivy45, led to a two-play drive that Mcneilcapped with a 42-yard touchdown runand a 28-0 lead with 9:47 left in thesecond quarter.

“We work on turnover drills every week, and it paid off for us,” Smith said.

Medina Valley’s Ben Mata snapped theshutout with a 61-yard touchdown run atthe 7:53 mark, though the Panthers deficitstayed at 28-6 after a failed extra-pointkick, and Tivy came right back with aseven-play, 66-yard scoring drive high-lighted by Mcneil’s 18-yard TD pass

to Fornes with 5:29left until halftime.Mitchell’s PAT kickmade it 35-6, a leadthe Antlers maintainedinto the break.

Medina Valley’sturnover woes contin-ued in the second halfwhen Tivy’s Jaymeozuna picked offStein on the Panthers’third play, and Mcneil

and Fornes hooked up for the final time on

a 33-yard touchdown pass down the leftsideline with 9:46 left in thequarter.

“It was a pretty nice night forKason — crowned the king andthen he had a great game,” Smithsaid.

Down 42-6, Medina Valley gotback on the scoreboard whenDeLaFuente hauled in a 30-yardhalfback pass from JonathanGroff for a touchdown in theclosing seconds of the quarter, but the Panthers’ comeback

hopes didn’t extend beyond Groff’s extra-point kick. Tivy’s Shannon Carringtonscored on an 8-yard run with 9:14 remain-ing in the fourth quarter, and Mitchell

saved a botched snap with a 2-point conversion run to put theAntlers up 50-13.

A fumble recovery by Tivy’sWestin Brown on the ensuingkickoff led to the Antlers’ finalscore, a 36-yard field goal byMitchell with 6:44 left to play, and Brown ended the Panthers’next series with an interception.

But it wasn’t easy. The host Indians, 0-3 in district play

Harlandale’s nextseries.

“We had a chanceearly in the first quar-ter to maybe take thelife out of them, andwe gave it back withan interception,” Tivycoach Mark Smithafter watching histeam hold Harlandaleto just three second-half points. “I’m

proud of the way the kids fought back. This was the kind of game we need to getready for the playoffs.”

Harlandale got another gift on the ensu-ing kickoff when Josh Sorder recovered aTivy fumble at the Antler 26, and fourplays later Harlandale’s Brandon Ramonfound nathan Ibarra open for a 24-yardTD off the halfback pass. Gomez’s PAT

late in the third quarter that cut the Indians’deficit to 21-17.

Harlandale wouldn’t get any closer.Mcneil found Fornes open for a 10-yardtouchdown completion with 5:06 left inthe fourth quarter, and Field stepped infront of a Cardenas pass on Harlandale’sensuing series, returning it 25 yards to pay-dirt to cap the night.

“I just saw the ball coming at me, andhonestly I didn’t think I was going to makeit,” Field said. “We knew at halftime thatwe had to get focused and play a lot better. We were able to come back and finish itout.”

for them to leave a lasting impression anda lasting legacy on this program and thethings that they’ve done. To be part ofback-to-back district championships andgo undefeated both years is something spe-cial, and it’s something they should bevery proud of.”

Tivy and Champion traded scores earlyand often in Friday’s showdown. Mcneildrove the Antlers to back-to-back touch-down drives of 53 and 66 yards, cappingthe first with a 21-yard scoring run and thesecond with a 66-yard scamper, but theChargers answered both with long TDdrives of their own. Champion’s Alexoestreich capped a 65-yard opening

Charger series with a 3-yard touchdownrun, and Champion senior running backDavid Rogers offset Mcneil’s second TDwith a 34-yard touchdown burst up themiddle early in the second quarter thatevened the score at 14-all.

Tivy scored again midwaythrough the quarter with an 11-play drive. Mcneil hit Fornestwice for completions of 21 and11 yards, and carried the ball fivetimes for 36 yards before JacobCamarillo took a handoff twoyards for the touchdown. BradMitchell’s third extra-point kickgave the Antlers a 21-14 lead with6:08 left until halftime, andMitchell later added a 25-yardfield goal in the final 13 seconds afterteammate Tyler Ahrens made a spectacu-lar diving catch on a 45-yard pass from

Mcneil. Mitchell’s kick sent Tivy into thebreak leading 24-14.

Champion would never get any closer asthe Antlers clamped down in the secondhalf. Rogers, who rushed for 148 yards

over the first two quarters, waslimited to just 13 yards in thesecond half against a toughTivy defense, while Mcneilkept the offensive pressure up.Mcneil’s 5-yard touchdownrun with 3:50 left in the thirdquarter and another MitchellPAT moved the Antlers’ lead31-14, and Mcneil capped twofourth quarter drives with scor-ing runs of a yard each to makeit a 45-14 game.

“Parks is doing the things we need to besuccessful, and people are stepping up andmaking the plays they need to,” Smith

said. “Parks is coming through like achamp.”

Rogers tacked on a final 4-yard touch-down run for Champion with 3:11 remain-ing to close the scoring at 45-20.

Mitchell finished the night a perfect 5-for-5 on extra point kicks, while sopho-more Aaron ozuna picked off a pass ondefense and nardo Almendariz added afumble recovery.

“It feels good to have back-to-backtitles,” Fornes said afterward. “We’veworked hard all year, and it paid off. Itwas definitely a heated game. They’reBoerne, we’re Tivy, and there’s alwaysthat rivalry going.”

The Antlers, off this week, will beginRegion IV-4A bi-district playoff actionnext Friday at home against District 28-4A’s fourth-place seed, new BraunfelsCanyon.

Region IV-4A Division II Bi-District Playoffs — Tivy 41, New Braunfels Canyon 22

An early 28-point scoring surgegave Tivy a big cushion Fridayagainst new Braunfels Canyon,

but it was a season-long touchdown driveby the Antlers in the second half thatsealed the deal in a 41-22 Class 4ADivision II bi-district playoff win over theCougars at Antler Stadium.

Tivy sophomore Billy Field’s late third-quarter interception ofa Canyon pass at theAntler 3-yard linetook the air out of aspirited comeback bidthat saw the Cougarsnarrow their deficit to28-14, and Tivy shutthe door with a 12-play, 97-yard scoringseries capped by jun-ior quarterback ParksMcneil’s 6-yard touch-

down run with 9:36 left to play.Brad Mitchell’s extra-point kick gave

the Antlers a commanding 35-14 lead, andTivy added another score four minuteslater to lead 41-14 before surrendering alate touchdown in the final 1:53.

“That was a huge interception and ahuge drive,” Antler coach Mark Smithsaid after watching his team improve to9-2 and secure a fifth consecutive area-round playoff berth. “They had capturedthe momentum in the third quarter, andthat interception woke us up. It kind ofturned the momentum back our way.”

Mcneil finished the night with 296 totaloffensive yards, passing for 171 yards and

two scores and rushing for another 125yards and two TDs, while the Antlers’defense forced four turnovers, all of whichled to Tivy scores.

“It’s a start,” Smith said of the win.“now we’re one of 32 (teams), and we’vegot to try and get to one of 16.”

Tivy hit Canyon (7-4) with a big scoringbarrage early. After holding the Cougars’first series to a three-and-out, the Antlers

drove 77 yards in six plays, the last aquick pass from Mcneil to Kason Fornesthat Fornes turned into a 32-yard scoringromp down the left sideline. Mitchell’sfirst of five extra-point kicks put theAntlers up 7-0.

Tivy quickly added two more scores onCanyon miscues. Senior Zach Quallsscooped up a fumble caused by teammateJesse Hernandez’s jarring hit on Cougar

running back Bryce Dunman and returnedit 27 yards for a touchdown, and JohnWilliams’ fumble recovery on Canyon’snext series set up an 18-yard touchdownpass from Mcneil to Fornes and a 21-0Tivy lead with 6:25 still remaining in thefirst quarter.

ered by Kenny edmonds, led to a 10-play,66-yard scoring drive that Mcneil cappedwith a 2-yard TD run early in the secondquarter. Mitchell’s PAT upped the Antlers’edge to 28-0.

Canyon finally got on the board later inthe quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run byDakota Billings, and Kyle Hoegenauer’sPAT kick sent the Cougars into halftimedown 28-7.

Canyon opened the second half with afailed onside kick, but Gage Hadlock’sinterception and 51-yard return of aMcneil pass three plays later set up a2-yard touchdown run by Tanner Hill.Hoegenauer’s extra-point kick cut theCougars’ deficit to 28-14.

Canyon threatened again on its nextseries, driving to a fourth-and-6 at theAntler 27, but Cougar quarterback AustinDay’s lofting pass toward the endzonewas picked off by Field.

“I saw the receiver, and the quarterbackwas looking right at him, so I just mademy jump on it and luckily was able to get

the ball,” Field said.Mcneil and senior Jacob Camarillo

went to work from there, with Mcneilrunning for 54 yards and Camarilloadding another 39 to spur the Antlers’game-clinching 97-yard scoring drive.Mcneil’s 6-yard TD scramble with9:36 left in the fourth quarter gave Tivya three-touchdown edge.

“That was a good drive, very wellengineered,” Smith said. “I thoughtParks responded well after throwingthe interception, and the kids did well.”

Tivy scored again four minutes later ona 1-yard touchdown run by Halton Franks,

offsetting a late 3-yard TD run by Billingsand 2-point conversion by Hoegenauer toclose the night.

“It got a little hairy there at the start ofthe third quarter,” Smith said. “We let

them kind of come backon us, but our defensestepped up and did somegreat hitting.”

Fornes led Tivy’sreceivers with four catch-es for 80 yards and twotouchdowns, and sopho-more Tyler Ahrens added73 yards on four recep-tions.

The Antlers return toaction Friday with an

Region IV-4A Division II Area Round Playoffs — Tivy 21, Vandegrift 16

ConVeRSe — The biggest tackleof Kenny edmonds’ and AlanYoung’s high school careers could-

n’t have come at a better time.The Tivy duo’s fourth-down stop of

Austin Vandegrift’s Brandon Brown at theAntler 5-yard line with no time remaining

turned back a franticfinal-minute drive bythe Vipers Fridaynight and lifted theAntlers to a heart-stopping 21-16 win inRegion IV-4A Divi-sion II area-roundplayoff action atRutledge Stadium.

Forced into a fourth-and-long situationafter edmonds sackedViper quarterbackDakota Prukop at the25-yard line one playearlier, Vandegrift triedto catch the Antlerssleeping. Brown, trail-ing across the middle, hauled in Prukop’s20-yard throw be-neath Tivy’s deep cov-erage, but edmondsand Young chased himdown before he could

reach the end zone.“We made some huge plays defensive-

ly,” Tivy coach Mark Smith said afterwatching his team improve to 10-2 andsecure a berth in this week’s regional

semifinals against Port Lavaca Calhoun.“We kind of had a letdown in the thirdquarter, but we found a way to come upwith stops when we needed to. I’m proudof our kids.”

Tivy needed a big defensive effort on anight when the Antlers’ offense sputtered.Junior quarterback Parks Mcneil ran for131 yards and one touchdown and passedfor another 93 yards and two scores, butwas intercepted twice and suffered astretch of 11 incompletions in a row.

Sophomore Billy Field recorded a season-high eight punts, one of which wasblocked.

“I thought overall defensively we playeda great game,” Smith said. “our plan wasnot to give up big explosive plays, and wedidn’t. This is the kind of game we oughtto expect and want, and it showed a lot ofcharacter for our kids to come out andfight like they did.”

Vandegrift drew first blood after Viperlinebacker elliott Byrd blocked a Field

punt early in the first quarter. Prukopclosed a quick 21-yard scoring drive witha 5-yard touchdown run at the 8:14 mark, and Rand Fredrickson’s extra-point kickgave Vandegrift a 7-0 lead.

Tivy stormed right back with an 80-yardseries capped by Mcneil’s 3-yard touch-down keeper and a Brad Mitchell PATkick with 4:00 left in the quarter, thenquickly found itself in scoring position

again after sophomore J.T. White blockeda Vandegrift punt deep in Antler territory.Three plays later, a scrambling Mcneildrilled senior Kason Fornes with an 18-yard touchdown pass just inside the endzone stripe, and Mitchell’s kick put Tivyahead 14-7.

Fredrickson’s 20-yard field goal midwaythrough the second quarter cut Tivy’s leadto 14-10 at halftime, an edge the Antlers

held until early in the fourth quarter.Field’s interception ofPrukop — his secondpick in as many weeks— set up a nine-playAntler drive thatended when Mcneilsidestepped a strongViper rush longenough to find seniorBraedon White openon a 25-yard TD con-nection less than aminute into the final

quarter.

Mitchell’s third PAT kick gave theAntlers a 21-10 lead, butVandegrift wouldn’t stay down.Prukop drove the Vipers 87 yardsin 11 plays, scoring on a 2-yardkeeper up the middle with 7:04remaining, though the Vipers stilltrailed 21-16 after Yuron Shear’s2-point run attempt came up short.

Vandegrift’s defense shut downTivy’s next two series in four playseach, the latter giving the Vipersone last shot at their own 33-yardline with 1:37 left to play. Prukopcame up big on a third-and-8 with a 26-

yard run, and a 15-yard facemask penaltyagainst Tivy gave the Vipers a first downat the Antler 19. Back-to-back 4-yardgains by Shears and Prukop moved theball to the 11, but a key holding penaltyput Vandegrift 10 yards back, andedmonds crashed through the line on thirddown to drop Prukop for a 4-yard loss.

edmonds and Young then wrapped upthe win on the final play withtheir clutch tackle.

“We brought in an extrasafety, and then we just wait-ed on the goal line because weknew they needed a touch-down to win,” Young saidafterward. “I was just tryingto come up and make the play, and fortunately we were ableto get there.”

Region IV-4A Division II Semifinal Playoffs — Tivy 50, Port Lavaca Calhoun 43

SAn AnTonIo — It took a “Gameof the Year” performance to win theGame of the Year, and Tivy quarter-

back Parks Mcneil obliged. The Antlers’ versatile junior capped an

already spectacular showing with a stun-ning final series, driving Tivy 52 yards injust over a minute and scoring on a game-winning 24-yard touchdown run in thefinal 31 seconds as the Antlers rallied to

knock off fifth-rankedPort Arthur Calhoun50-43 Friday night inan epic Class 4Aregional semifinalshowdown at theAlamodome.

Mcneil, who fin-ished the night com-pleting 17 passes for336 yards and twoscores and rushed foranother 216 yards and

four TDs, hit key throws to seniorBraedon White for 19 and 6 yards in theclimatic series, and added a 2-point con-version run to close out the scoring asTivy improved to 11-2 on the year andearned a berth in this week’s Region IV-4A final against Corpus Christi Calallen.

“Parks really stepped up tonight,” anemotional Mark Smith said of his quarter-back, who’s had to endure a season ofcomparisons to former Tivy All-State sig-nal-caller Johnny Manziel. “That guy’scaught more flak this year than anybody, and tonight he showed his own grit, showed his own courage, and he made hisown mark on this team and what this sea-son is about.”

In a game that featured 1,235 yards oftotal offense, Mcneil personally account-ed for 552, putting up videogame-likenumbers that offset an equally gutty per-formance by Calhoun. The Sandcrabsnever led in Friday’s showdown until thefinal 1:33, and only then after Calhouncoach Richard Whitacre decided to foregoa game-tying extra-point kick followingJoseph Bargas’ 6-yard TD run and optedinstead to try for two points. nickMcCrory’s bulldozing conversion run putthe Sandcrabs up 43-42, but Mcneil’s late

heroics overcame the effort.“Thank God for the 2-minute drill,”

Smith said. “We end every Wednesdaypractice with that, and I think it helped ourkids be prepared for this moment. We toldthem all week it was going to come downto the fourth quarter, and if we could getinto the fourth quarter we could win it.I’m proud of the way our kids stepped up.They did a super job.”

Mcneil’s outing was complemented bystrong showings from White and fellowseniors Kason Fornes and JacobCamarillo. Fornes finished the night witheight catches for 163 yards, and Whitehauled in five throws for 113 yards, in-cluding a pair of touchdowns.

Camarillo racked up 93 total yards and a

score, and senior Colton Tucker addedtwo catches for 39 yards, including a key 17-yard catchon fourth down that kept athird-quarter Antler scoringdrive going.

Seniors Ferris owens andRandel o’Bryant led Tivy’sdefensive effort with crucialfumble recoveries, both ofwhich led to Antler TDs, andsenior defensive back AlanYoung set up another scorewith a partially blocked punt.Tivy thwarted a last-ditch Calhoun drivewhen senior running back Daniel Brooks,an oklahoma commit, was driven out ofbounds at the Antler 30-yard line as time

expired.“We knew we were going to do it

tonight,” o’Bryant said. “It wasTFnD all the way.”

In a preview of things to come,Tivy and Calhoun both put up firstquarter scores. Mcneil capped a94-yard opening drive by theAntlers with a 30-yard touchdownkeeper up the middle that saw himcrash over Brooks for the final twoyards before reaching the end zone.Brad Mitchell’s first of six PATkicks gave Tivy a 7-0 lead.

Region IV-4A Division II Finals — Corpus Christi Calallen 45, Tivy 15

SAn AnTonIo — The forecastedthunderstorms never materializedSaturday afternoon, but that didn’t

stop lightning-quick Corpus ChristiCalallen running back Marcus Price fromraining on Tivy’s 2011 playoff run.

Price ran for 257 yards and four touch-downs, and the Wildcats blew open a tightearly game by scoring on five consecutiveoffensive series en route to a 45-15 winover the Antlers in the Class 4A Region IVfinal at Comalander Stadium.

Calallen finished the day with 530 yardsof total offense, offsetting a 433-yardshowing by Tivy as the Wildcats improvedto 13-1 on the year and earned a berth inthis week’s Division II state semifinalsagainst Region III champion Manvel(14-0), a 38-35 winner over La Marque inother playoff action Saturday.

Tivy quarterback Parks Mcneil passedfor 328 yards and onetouchdown againstCalallen and ran foranother 66 yards and ascore, but the Antlersturned the ball overthree times, two ofwhich led to Wildcatscores, and gave upthree touchdown runsof 40 or more yards incapping 2011 seasonplay at 11-3.

“They made the plays and we didn’t,”Tivy coach Mark Smith said before payingtribute to longtime Calallen coach PhilDanaher, “Phil’s been doing this a longtime, and you’ve got to take your hat off tohim. He knows what he’s doing, and he did

it better than us today.“We missed a lot of tackles and didn’t

make the plays that we needed to offen-sively,” Smith added. “When you do that, you’re normally going to lose. I didn’tthink it would be like this. I thought itwould be a tight game, but they kind oftook it to us there in the second half.”

The two teams traded long opening-drivescores, with the Antlers moving 80 yards in13 plays and Calallen 68 yards in 11 snaps.Brad Mitchell’s 23-yard field goal at the

7:30 mark gave Tivy an early 3-0 lead, butJake Brearton capped the Wildcats’ ensu-ing series with a 36-yard field goal fiveminutes later that knotted the score at 3-3.

Tivy ended Calallen’s next two posses-sions on turnovers after senior nardoAlmendariz recovered a Wildcat fumble atthe Antler 1-yard line and teammate JoshAppel intercepted a pass at the Calallen 35,but the Antlers couldn’t convert either mis-cue into points.

Calallen, on the other hand, was able to

capitalize on a late second-quarter Antlerfumble, driving 80 yards in 11 plays.Price’s 5-yard touchdown run around leftend and a Brearton PAT kick with just 27seconds left until halftime put the Wildcatsup 10-3 ... and marked the beginning of afive-TD outburst by Calallen.

Wildcat quarterback Preston Dorsey, who compiled 219 yards of total offense onthe day, ripped off a 42-yard scoring run-
