The Lanna culture is strongest in the
north of Thailand, around Chiang Mai

AVIATION
Not Taking No for an AnswerAir New Zealand wants the AustralianCompetition & Consumer Commission(ACCC) to demonstrate consistency whenmaking its final ruling on the airline’sapplication for a Cooperation Agreementwith Air Canada. The proposed deal would involve Air Canadaand Air New Zealand jointly promoting andselling direct flights between Sydney andVancouver (operated by AC) and Aucklandand Vancouver (operated by NZ).The Australian competition watchdog lastweek signaled that it would knock back theproposal because it was concerned theagreement was likely to reduce competitionon the Australia-Canada route and would bedetrimental to Australian consumers.
Air NZ is said to be struggling to understandhow the ACCC had formed its preliminaryview and would be making furthersubmissions ahead of the final determination. The airline’s Group General ManagerInternational Ed Sims noted the fact thatQantas had a code share relationship withSouth African Airways on the ‘highlyuncompetitive’ Johannesburg route and acode share with Japan Airlines.“The ACCC would seem to be ignoring thereality of the global economic meltdown andthe fact that this year more than two dozenairlines around the globe have collapsedwhile those remaining take the knife to theirbusinesses, including axing non-profitableand marginal services,” Mr Sims said.
