Maths:Arithmetic starter:

1) 739 ÷ 2 = 369.52) 845 x 5 = 4,2253) 87.39 ÷ 3 = 29.134) ¾ of 435 = 326.255) 82 x 46 = 3,7726) 9,263 ÷ 5 = 1,852.67) 6,674 x 9 = 60,0668) 9,504 x 73 = 693,792

Percentages:

Calculate the following percentages. Remember: there are multiple ways to ‘build’ the percentage – sometimes it is worth working backwards from 100%.

1) A farmer harvests 850kg of parsnips. 30% go to the local market and 50% go to a local supermarket. What mass of parsnips are left? 170kg

2) A plumber has 150m of pipes. The plumber uses 20% fitting a central heating system, and then 25% of what is left to fit a bathroom. How much pipe does the plumber use to fit the bathroom? 40m

3) A library has 2500 books. 40% of the books are fiction. How many books are not fiction books? 1500

4) A cyclist rides 460 miles each week in training. She covers 30% of the miles in one ride. How many miles are left after 1 ride? 322 miles

5) A charity raises £1740 at an auction. 20% of the money was raised by auctioning one item. How much did the rest of the auction raise? £1,392

6) Janek’s height increases by 10% each year for two years. At the beginning of those two years, he was 120cm tall. How tall is he at the end of the two years? 145.2cm

7) There are 450 chairs in a school. 80% of the chairs are in good condition. Of the remaining chairs, 40% need to be thrown away. How many chairs need to be thrown away? 36

Literacy:Personification creative writing task:‘Personification’ is when you give an animal or object qualities or abilities that only a human can have. Below are some examples:

Lightning danced across the sky. The wind howled in the night. The car complained as the key was roughly turned in its ignition. Rita heard the last piece of pie calling her name.

Your task today is to describe one object, using as much personification as you can. Think about all of the different things you can say to make the object seem more ‘human’. Try to consider the physical appearance of the object as well as human characteristics or traits that might relate to it. You should be aiming to come up with at least 10 sentences that use personification to describe your chosen object.

Feel free to send your work to the email. I would like to read some of your ideas if possible! I’m also interested to see what object you decided to describe. If it had been me, I would have gone for an oven or a fridge…basically something relating to food!

Languages:

The two resources for this task can be found on a separate document on the home learning page. Students should be attempting to create full sentences in French either verbally or in a written format (or both). To do this, they will need to combine the ‘conversation’ worksheet as well as the ‘shopping items’ worksheet. As this was not an area we had managed to reach yet during the school year, it should just be about experimenting with the pronunciation of words and attempting to combine set phrases to create a sentence. If you are brave enough, film yourself doing it and send a video to the email address. Don’t worry: you can’t be worse than me at French. I was shocking at school (although I somehow managed to scrape a B in my GCSEs).

Quiz Question Answer:  James and Lily Potter
