IntroductionBurley introduced fixedflueless gas fires to Britainin 1999. Although theconcept is relatively new inthis country, fixed fluelessgas fires have a longestablished history in Japan(where there are 40 million),the United States(approximately 20 million)and Australia.
Fixed flueless gas fires givea combination ofconvenience, efficiency andsafety which flued fires cannever equal. We haveentered an era of spirallinggas prices, gas shortagesand global warming. It isshort sighted to continuewasting energy at such arate when there is analternative product which issuperior to flued fires in somany ways.
EfficiencyMost of the heat from anopen flued gas fire or solidfuel fire goes straight up thechimney. By comparison100% of the heat generatedby a flueless gas fire goes toheating the room.
Tests commissioned byBurley compared a 2.5kWflueless gas fire (BurleyEnviron), a typical 6kW insetflued gas fire (quotedefficiency 59%), a decorativeflued gas fire and a 2kWelectric fire.
These tests showed that theflueless gas fire producedover 3 times more heat perkilowatt than the flued gasfire and over 12 times moreheat than the decorative gasfire. In other words the fluedgas fire lost over 70% of theheat up the chimney and thedecorative fire lost over 90%.
If the 15 million flued gasfires in Britain were replacedby flueless fires, the countrywould save around23,500,000,000 kilowatts ofgas every year (costing£1,600,000,000) which inturn would reduce carbondioxide emissions by over4,200,000 tonnes every year.
Safety
As Burley’s flueless gas fires do not rely on achimney, they provide an unsurpassed level ofsafety to which flued fires can only aspire. Flues andchimneys can become blocked or adverselyaffected by down-draughts. Burley flueless gas firesare designed to burn the gas extremely cleanlywithout a flue. The burnt gases are then passedthrough a catalytic converter.
Every Burley flueless gas fire has an oxygendepletion sensor which constantly monitors the airquality in the room. If the level of oxygen drops byjust 1.5%, the fire automatically shuts down.
Burley’s production method is unique. Every fluelessgas fire we have ever made has been bench run for30 minutes, during which time we monitornumerous combustion and safety criteria. Burley’srigid test criteria for combustion are four timesstricter than the European standards.
fixed flueless gas fires – how do they work?

Movement of airthrough a housewith a flueless fire
Movement of airthrough a housewith a chimney

Air movementFlueless fires gently convect heatthroughout the entire house. A small airvent regulates air into the room which isbeing heated. This heated air dissipatesaway from the fire and circulates aroundthe house.
A chimney or flued fire, by comparison, draws a huge amount of air from aroundyour house. This is warm air (that you havepaid to heat) which is replaced by cold airleaking in through windows and doors.
Catalytic convertersAll Burley flueless gas fires incorporate acatalytic converter.
This is a honeycomb which is coated withrare metals. Oxygen ‘sticks’ to the coating. If a carbon monoxide molecule meets it,the oxygen converts the carbon monoxideto carbon dioxide (which is harmless and ispresent in fresh air). Burley has NEVERhad a catalytic converter fail or needreplacing.
All Burley appliances are CE marked byinternational test houses. One of the teststhat the fires must pass is to have thecatalytic converter removed. In thiscondition it must still pass all the strictcombustion tests.
ConvenienceA flueless gas fire can be fitted inminutes rather than severalhours. It is an extremely simpleand problem free operationprovided the CORGI registeredfitter follows the installationinstructions. If it is to go in anopen chimney, then the flue mustbe blocked. Apart from that thefire just needs connecting andtesting, and the air vent fitting. When fitting a flueless fire, it doesnot need to be sealed to thefireplace opening.
Flueless gas fires do not have tobe installed on an outside wall.As no flue is required, thousandsof pounds can be saved by notbuilding a new chimney orrestoring a condemned one.
Annual servicing for a flueless firesimply consists of cleaning thefire, checking the combustion, and checking for damagedcomponents.
No problems with chimneysChimneys and flues are fraughtwith potential problems, all ofwhich will stop a flued fire fromoperating safely.
1. The fabric of the chimney couldcollapse.
2. A nest or debris could blockthe flue.
3. Atmospheric conditions oropen doors can create a downdraught.
4. Extractor fans can create adraught to reverse the pull of achimney, causing it to spill theproducts of combustion into theroom (this makes flueless gas firesparticularly popular and safe foruse in pubs and restaurants).
Burley's flueless gas fires sufferfrom none of these problems.

Corgi Registered FitterIn the UK, the fire must be installed by aCORGI registered fitter in accordance withthe installation instructions. Outside theUK, consult your dealer for regulationsapplicable to your country.
Please note – this guide is a summary. Full installation and user instructions arecontained in booklets supplied with the fireand on our website – www.burley.co.ukPlease read installation instructions beforeundertaking any structural preparationwork.

Although installation of flued and fluelessgas fires is permitted in bedrooms, Burleydoes not recommend it. Gas fires may notbe fitted in basements which do not haveat least one side open to the outdoors, orin bathrooms. If in doubt please call Burleyservice department for more advice.
VentilationAn air vent which provides not less than100cm2 free air must be installed in theroom, at least 1 metre away from the fire.A chimney, ceiling or floor vent is notsuitable.
Central heatingFlueless fires are not designed to be thesole source of heat in a room, they aresupplementary to central heating.Insufficient ventilation or background heatcould cause condensation to form oncolder surfaces.
Existing chimney or flueExisting chimneys and flues must beblocked off completely. A cavity wall box issupplied with the Environ and werecommend that this is used in all cases.
Fireplace requirementsAll inset appliances require a non-combustiblefireplace, hearth and back panel. The hearthmust extend at least 100mm from the frontand sides of the fire. All materials within200mm of the appliance must be non-combustible. All materials, including thefireplace, mantel, shelf and wall above(including any varnishes, paints etc) must berated to withstand a constant workingtemperature of 1500C. You cannot puttelevisions etc on the wall above the fire.
The fire comes with a 60mm spacer fitted tothe front trim. We recommend that this spaceris left on as it will keep the surfaces of thefireplace cooler.
FreestandingIf you would like your Environfire to be completelyfreestanding you will need toorder a ‘spacer kit’ which fits tothe back of the fire.
GuaranteeAll products come with a one-year guarantee.Return of the guarantee card will provide youwith a free second-year guarantee (conditionsapply). As with all gas appliances, the firemust be serviced annually by a CORGIregistered fitter.
Natural gas or PropanePlease specify natural gas or propane whenplacing your order as the fires are singlecategory appliances. Due to the properties ofpropane the flame picture may differ slightly.
Should you have any further questions orrequire any assistance please do not hesitateto ask your retailer or phone Burley direct.
