In order for us to keep our big guys in the game with the type of offense we were using, we thought it would be best to go to zone. And then they had to adjust to us.”

BOWERS, BERWICK, CIGA AND WATKINS SIGN NATIONAL LETTERS OF INTENT Guards Robbie Berwick and Dayshawn Watkins along with forwards Cinmeon Bowers and Norbertas Giga have signed National Letters of Intent to play basketball at Florida State for two-time ACC Coach of the Year Leonard Hamilton and the Seminoles. The four players will bolster Florida State’s roster and is another strong recruiting class for the Seminoles who are the third winningest program in the ACC in the last eight seasons since the start of the 2005-06 season. “I am very pleased to add all four of these players to our roster,” said Hamilton. “My staff did a tremendous job of identifying these talented players and cultivating relationships with these players - all of whom will help us immediately. We have added a great combination of players who will help us as we continue to compete to hold our place among the top teams in the incredibly talented ACC. We have to continue to recruit well because this league is only going to get better and we have to continue to improve our team on an annual basis.”

Quoting Devon Bookert

“Devon is still trying to find himself, trying to become a leader of a team, trying to become more vocal. He needs to be a little more demonstrative, a little more demanding in telling this team what he wants it to do.”

Leonard Hamilton Florida State Head Coach

“We've been trying to get him to go ahead and be more assertive vocally, because he's the point guard of the team. He still has maturing to do, but like I've been telling people, I think he's one of the better point guards to come through here in the last 10-15 years."

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Ian Miller scored 22 points and Devon Bookert added 18 to help Florida State past No. 10 VCU 85-67 at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Montay Brandon added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Miller’s 22 points was a career-high and his third straight game in double-fi gures. He said cutting down on the turnovers is a work in progress. Treveon Graham had 14 points to lead the Rams who were denied their fi rst 4-0 start since the 1993-94 season. Florida State lost in overtime to Virginia Commonwealth in the Sweet Sixteen of the 2011 NCAA tournament. There would be no repeat this time as the Seminoles took control late in the fi rst half and then used an 11-0 spurt to open the second half. VCU also came in averaging more than 80 points per game and it made for a pace that was rapid from the outset. The Rams

couldn’t make shots, though, shooting just 29 percent for the game. They trailed by 30 late in the second half.

Game 6 -- Florida State 61, Northeastern 60

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Devon Bookert hit a 10-foot fade away jumper off a missed layup with 0.5 seconds to give Florida State a dramatic 62-60 win over Northeastern in the

third place game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Northeastern’s Scott Eatherton got off a desperation 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer, but it bounced harmlessly off the backboard. Aaron Thomas had 16 points to lead Florida State, followed by Robert Gilchrist with 15. The Seminoles for much of the game before taking their fi rst lead of the game with just under 14 minutes left in the game, then had to fi ght several fi nal charges by the Huskies. Eatherton fi nished with 21 points and 15 rebounds, his third double-double of the tournament. Reggie Spencer and David Walker each added 13 points. Florida State took its fi rst lead of the game at 13:43 on a basket by Robert Gilchrist that made it 41-39. But the Huskies kept attacking the Seminoles’ pressure and got a dunk by Derrico Peck to nudge back in front 50-46 with 7:32 remaining. The Seminoles came right back, and got a steal and layup by Montay Brandon, and then a driving layup by Ian Millerto go back ahead by a basket at 52-50. It stretched out to 58-52, but Florida State soon lost Okaro White to his fi fth foul at the 2:33 mark. The Huskies took advantage and cut the lead to a basket on their next trip down the fl oor on another dunk by Peck. They then tied it at 58 in on a pair of free throws by Eatherton with just over a minute to play. Florida State called timeout and took the shot clock down before getting Miller free for a short jumper. It rolled out, but Brandon was there for the tip to put the Seminoles back up. Walker was fouled on the subsequent inbounds play and then tied it again with two free throws to set up Florida State’s fi nal possession.

Game 7 -- No. 13/15 Florida 67, Florida State 66

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Ian Miller’s half-court shot hit the back of the rim as time expired and the Florida State men’s basket-ball team fell to No. 15 Florida, 67-66. The Seminoles now have a blowout victory over then-No. 10 VCU, an overtime loss to then-No. 14 Michigan and this near-victory over the Gators in the young 2013-14 season thus showing a tremen-dous amount of improvement since last year. The ̀ Noles got more than half their points off the bench at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. Miller poured in 13 points, Aaron Thomas had 12 and Michael Ojo fi nished with 10. Like Ojo, 7-footer Boris Bojanovsky had a strong game, scoring a career and team-high 14 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting from the fi eld. Bojanovsky also had two blocks. Okaro White added nine points and two block of his own. The Seminoles had just 12 turnovers offensively. For Florida, Case Prather fi nished with 19 points and Michael Frazier II had 17. The Gators shot 38 percent compared to FSU’s 42-percent clip. UF had 15 assists to Florida State’s 10. The `Noles trailed 31-28 at the half but battled back and tied the score at 66-66 with 28 seconds remaining on the clock. FSU forced a missed shot on UF’s fi nal possession but were called for a foul on the Gators’ offensive rebound and Dorian Finney-Smith hit one of two free-throws before Miller’s desperation heave nearly found the bottom of the net from half court.

Game 8 -- Minnesota 71 Florida State 61

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Okaro White had 16 points and eight rebounds and Ian Miller added 16 points and seven assists off the bench, but the Seminoles lost to Minnesota 71-61 in the 15th Annual ACC/Big 10 Challenge. Florida State shot 46.5 percent, but turned the ball over 17 times and missed 10 free throws in a foul-fi lled game. The Gophers led 52-42 midway through the second half, overcoming woeful shoot-ing with some tough defense and a couple of three-point plays from DeAndre Mathieu and Oto Osenieks to build the cushion. The Seminoles didn’t attempt a shot for the fi rst 3:07 of the second half as the turnovers kept coming. But Florida State hung around, hitting the shots they did take and clamping down on defense themselves to cut it to 57-53 on a lob from Miller to White with under six minutes to go. The lightning quick senior scored on two coast-to-coast drives and the Seminoles chipped away at the foul line to cut the defi cit to six points at halftime. The Golden Gophers grabbed 13 offensive rebounds against the bigger Seminoles to help them bounce back from a disappointing showing at the Maui Invitational. The Gophers only turned the ball over six times and hit seven 3-pointers to overcome 34 percent shooting.

Game 9 -- Florida State 77, Jacksonville State 53

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Seminoles shot 54.5 percent from the fl oor, scored 28 points in the paint and turned 16 Jacksonville State turnovers into 27 points, cruising to a 77-

53 victory at the Donald L. Tucker Center. Okaro White and Boris Bojanovsky led four Seminole double-fi gure scorers with 17 and 15 points, respectively. Montay Brandon added 14 points and Aaron Thomas chipped in 12. The Gamecocks were largely unsuccessful in their attempt to control the tempo after the Seminoles used a 20-4 fi rst half run to open up a 19-point lead, then sealed the win spurts of 10 and 11 unanswered points in the second half. There was little doubt about the outcome after the Seminoles carried a 37-20 lead into the locker room at the half. White (14 points) and Bojanovsky (10) fueled the Seminoles, who seized control of the game with a 20-4 run over an eight-minute stretch in the opening half. FSU led 10-7 before consecutive 3-pointers by Brandon and Jarquez Smith triggered a 10-0 run. The 7-foot-3 Bojanovsky scored FSU’s next six points with two free throws, a 15-foot jumper and a layup off a Devin Bookert feed to push the Seminoles’ lead to 22-9. White took over from there with consecutive dunks - on an offensive rebound and a pass from Ian Miller - before Brandon contributed a pair free throws. White’s second offensive rebound basket in an 8-0 run pushed the Seminoles’ lead to 30-11 - their largest of the opening half.

Game 10 -- Florida State 106Charlotte 62

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State defeated Charlotte, 106-62, at the Donald L. Tucker Center. It was the fi rst time that FSU had eclipsed the 100-points plateau in a single game since the program hung 108 on Campbell in 2005. Charlotte, a squad that won the Puerto Rico Tip-Off last month with a triumph over then-No. 13 Michigan, had no answer for the Seminoles’ top-to-bottom total team effort -- especially Aaron Thomas’ performance. Florida State’s sophomore swing man registered a career-best 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the fi eld and 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point range. Thomas also was effective on the defensive end, grabbing four of his seven total rebounds and notching a steal and a block. He also had two assists. For a Florida State team that shot 54 percent from the fi eld and nearly 41 percent from long range, Thomas wasn’t the only one to reach double fi gures on the stat sheet. Senior guard Ian Miller was 6-of-11 from the fi eld for 18 points while Robert Gilchrist and Boris Bojanovsky had 11 points each. Okaro White slid into the role of small forward and contributed a double-double wi0th 14 points and 11 rebounds. Montay Brandon also had 14 points. Florida State’s bench scored 52 points while the entire 49ers team scored 62. Shawn Lester scored 16 of those points for Charlotte and Pierria Henry added 13 before being ejected in the second half. The Seminoles held Charlotte to 35 percent and out rebounded the visitors 45-33. The 49ers also had 19 turnovers that led to 30 FSU points. Florida State had just nine giveaways and had 22 assists compared to just nine by Charlotte.

SUNRISE, Fla. - Florida State scored the game’s fi nal six points to defeat No. 20 UMass 60-55 in the Orange Bowl Classic. Florida State had a season-high 12 blocks. Boris Bojanovsky, a 7-foot-3 sophomore, had a career-high seven blocks in 16 minutes. Michael Ojo, a 7-1 sophomore, added two blocks, seven points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes. Florida State beat a ranked team for the second time this season. Aaron Thomas scored 18 points for Florida State and was voted the game’s most valuable player. His two free throws with two seconds left sealed the victory. Bojanovsky had three blocks down the stretch. Chaz Williams’ driving layup put the Minutemen up 55-54 with 1:51 to go, but they failed to score on their fi nal four possessions while commit-ting two turnovers, including one when Lalanne was called for hanging on the rim on a dunk. Two free throws by Ian Miller with 1:06 left gave the Seminoles the lead for good. The Minutemen shot a season-low 33 percent, and their starters were 0 for 12 from 3-point range. Their point total was a season low, 29 below their average. Derrick Gordon had 12 points for UMass, and Williams scored 10. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Sophomore swingman Aaron Thomas

scored 14 of his game-high 19 points in the second half on an array of drives and dunks, leading the Seminoles to a 67-59 victory over Charleston Southern. With its fourth consecutive victory, Florida State closed its non-conference schedule on a high note heading into the Jan. 4 Atlantic Coast Conference opener against Virginia. The Seminoles countered the Buccaneers’ 10 3-pointers with a dominating 44-10 scoring advantage in the paint. Sophomore point guard Devin Bookert delivered a career-high nine assists to go along with a game-high seven rebounds. Playing for the fi rst time in nine days, the Seminoles needed all of the easy baskets they could muster as they were just 4 of 18 from behind the 3-point arc. By contrast, the Buccaneers scored 30 of their 59 points from beyond the arc. Ultimately, the Seminoles’ inside strength and second half defense - CSU shot just 33 percent from the fl oor after the break and 36 percent for the game - proved to be too much. Florida State turned 17 Bucs’ turnovers into 23 points. The Seminoles built a 30-22 halftime lead by pounding the ball inside against the under-sized Buccaneers to the tune of a 20-4 points in the paint advantage.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Justin Anderson scored 16 points and Akil Mitchell added 11 points along with 13 rebounds to lead Virginia to a 62-50 win at Florida State in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both schools. Virginia jumped to an early 6-0 lead and never trailed. The Cavaliers led by as many as 15 in the opening half and 22 in the second half. Capitalizing on a 20-2 scoring advantage off Florida State fi rst half turnovers, Virginia built an early 28-13 lead on its way to a 30-17 cushion at the midway break despite losing the services of scoring leader Joe Harris early in the game. Anderson and freshman London Perrantes took up the scoring slack for the Cavaliers with 10 points apiece in the opening half. Perrantes fi nished with 14 points and teammate Malcolm Brogdon added 11. Harris played less than three minutes without taking a shot before being injured during a scramble for a loose ball. Florida State went the opening fi ve minutes without a score until Okaro White’s 3-point shot from the side. White was Florida State’s lone double-digit scorer with 15 points.

Game 14 -- Florida State 56, Clemson 41

CLEMSON, S.C. - Florida State forced Clemson to shoot 30 percent from the fi eld and allowed just one double-digit scorer as the Seminoles held Clemson was held to a season low for points in a 56-41 victory. The Semioles forced 18 turnovers while giving the basketball away just 11 times of their own. Senior guard Ian Miller came off the bench to score 15 points for the Seminoles, shooting 6-of-12 from the fi eld and 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Miller also added four rebounds and fi ve assists. Sophomore guards Aaron Thomas and Devon Bookert scored 10 points apiece while rookie Jarquez Smith added eight points. Boris Bojanovsky contributed a team-best three blocks on the defensive end of the fl oor and Montay Brandon had fi ve rebounds. The Seminoles had 10 steals and shot 47.3-percent from the fi eld. It looked like the Clemson defense would be too much as FSU didn’t score in the game’s fi rst four minutes. But a 13-2 run by the `Noles counteracted that slow start and the visi-tors eventually built a 16-point advantage in the second half and never led by less than nine points the rest of the night.

Game 15 -- Florida State 85, Maryland 61

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Ian Miller scored 20 as Florida State knocked down a season-high 16 three-point baskets en route to an 85-61 Atlantic Coast Conference victory against Maryland. Dez Wells led Maryland with 15 points while Nick Faust added 14. The Seminoles were 16 of 24 from behind the arc after hitting 10 in the previous four games combined. The 16 3-pointers were the third-most in school history and the most by Florida State in ACC play. Okaro White scored 15 and Aaron Thomas fi nished with 14. Montay Brandon added 13 points and eight rebounds. The Seminoles entered the game shooting 31.2 percent from three-point range and ranked No. 13 in the ACC. That team was nowhere to be found as Florida State hit 9-of-12 attempts in the fi rst half. Devon Bookert struck fi rst with the game’s opening three points from the left wing. Then it became the White and Miller show during a 20-4 run where Florida State took a 37-19 lead.

Bookert ended a Maryland 7-0 run that left the Terrapins trailing 17-15 with a triple from the right bend. White scored the next fi ve with a strong left-handed lay-up off a dribble-drive then knocked down a 3-pointer from the wing. Miller followed with a long-range bucket from the top of the key on the next possession and hit another 3-pointer from the wing for Florida State’s next points. White, Miller and Thomas took turns for the next three before it was Miller’s turn again. That was six consecutive three-point baskets for the Seminoles.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Florida State scored 13 consecutive points over the fi nal four minutes to pull away from the Miami Hurricanes 63-53. The Seminoles made their fi nal six shots, and also went 8 for 8 from the free-throw line down the stretch. Miami missed six shots in a row during the decisive stretch and went 3 1/2 minutes without a point. The Seminoles made their fi nal six shots, and also went 8 for 8 from the free-throw line down the stretch. Florida State won its third game in a row. The 14th and fi nal lead change came when Okaro White’s two free throws put Florida State ahead to stay, 52-51. Garrius Adams then blew a dunk for the Hurricanes, and that was their last chance to regain the lead. Ian Miller’s 3-pointer made it 57-51, and he added two free throws in the fi nal minute to help seal the win. Aaron Thomas led the Seminoles with 12 points. Devon Bookert and Boris Bojanovsky added 11 each. Bookert made three 3-pointers for the Seminoles, who went 7 for 15 from beyond the arc after sinking 16 3-pointers in Sunday’s win over Maryland. Florida State went 14 for 17 from the free-throw line, while Miami went only 2 for 6. Miami missed 19 of 28 3-point tries. There were no fast-break points, refl ecting the methodical pace with both teams playing stingy zones that forced a lot of long possessions and outside shots. Miami senior Donnavan Kirk shot 9 for 12 and scored a career-high 21 points. Rion Brown also had 21, but the rest of the team shot 1 for 15 from 3-point range. The Hurricanes missed 13 of their fi rst 17 shots, and the Seminoles led for most of the opening half, building an advantage of 18-11. James Kelly’s basket put Miami ahead for the fi rst time, 21-20. Kirk beat the fi nal buzzer with a basket for a 28-24 lead. Brown’s back-to-back 3-pointers gave the Hurricanes their largest lead at 43-38 midway in the second half.

Michael Ojo: Player profile Four years ago, Michael Ojo was playing soccer in Nigeria. Now, he is one of Florida State's most promising players. FSView – FSU Student Newspaper David Walker @JDavidWalker January 15, 2014 Upon meeting Michael Ojo, your hand doesn’t really get shaken, but engulfed. At 7-foot-1 and 292 lbs., every part of the Florida State center from Lagos, Nigeria seems devised with basketball in mind. On the court, in the moment before checking into the game, he stands as a statuesque personification of the “big man” archetype. When the action starts that potential crashes with reality, and the recency that Ojo was introduced to the sport is revealed. “I was playing soccer, like I used to do,” Ojo recalled. “And I met this guy who said ‘Hey tall man, what are you doing playing soccer? You don’t realize what basketball can do for you!’” It was just four years ago that Michael Ojo first found a basketball in his hands. The sport was a known commodity in Nigeria; icons like Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan are labeled as global for a reason. But the game itself, its various nuances and intricacies, not to mention its hundreds of rules, was shrouded in ambiguity to the young Nigerian. He began the arduous task of learning the sport on an outside court near Nigeria’s national stadium, playing pick-up games with locals. His skills were sub-rudimentary at best, but his physique propagated another story entirely, one that levied expectations far outside Ojo’s capacity to fulfill them immediately. Upon seeing a literal giant show up on the court one day, as if out of the sky, wonder and excitement at the sudden appearance soon inspired lofty expectations. Towering well above his peers, Michael Ojo has a body that seems predisposed for basketball, tailored to the game that values size more than anything else. But pressure to live up to potential his physique inherently possesses, and initial failures to pick up such a complex game right away led to understandable frustration. “They wanted me to know how to play basketball in, like, a month. They were like, this is Michael Jordan. But my coach said this is a process, take it one step at a time. It was really frustrating, trust me [...] sometimes you feel like you want to quit. [But] my coach [wouldn’t] let me, because he was a good guy, he was always there for me, encouraging me every time. He used to say that ‘If basketball was so easy, my grandma would be playing.’” It was this coach, Lateef Erinfolami, who would end up fostering his development. Erinfolami would not let basketball become a means-to-an-end for Ojo, at least not yet. He emphasized school and learning the game above all else, and kept his pupil oblivious to both international basketball camps and the dream of parlaying the sport into a full-ride scholarship to a college in America. It was nearly two years before the idea of earning a scholarship entered his consciousness. It was soon after he was attending his senior year at Tennessee Temple before enrolling at Florida State. Going to school in America was always a vague, out-of-reach dream for Ojo. However, it turned into swift reality after his brief introduction to basketball. His voyage has carried him far from home, a place he hasn’t returned since leaving three years ago.

“It’s something I’ve been prepared for, because I knew someday at some point I would have to leave and go fight for my future. It was something I was prepared for but it was tough. Trust me.” College basketball is a year-round endeavor and Ojo believes that he will likely have to wait until graduation to have enough free time to make a return visit. His ultimate goal of a college degree is what fuels him apart from basketball, a promise that helps ground him so many miles away from home. “My degree is something I owe my family. I promised my people, because they know American culture can change anybody to anything, so I promised them just that I would be the same person I am and get my degree. I won’t let anything distract me from school, my degree is something I promised my people and I will get it.” Well into his sophomore year and already a defensive terror, Michael Ojo is well ahead of the learning curve. Where once he was grounded, still afraid to break the only basket they had back home in Nigeria, he now soars and throws it down with unrestrained fury. He still sets his screen and lumbers to the basket in the tentative manner of one not yet completely confident in what he wants to do, but he now knows where he needs to be. He possesses a burgeoning post game and his explosiveness is being allocated and refined. Michael Ojo began his basketball journey far later than most, and has chased the promise of his professed potential from Lagos, Nigeria to Tallahassee, Fla. Basketball, a sport that always seemed imbued in his DNA, is only but a recent revelation. He has already reaped the rewards of all his hard work in the form of an education in the United States he could otherwise not afford. His degree will stand as a testament to the fulfillment of his enormous potential, regardless of whatever else happens on the court. And perhaps sometime soon, either in this season or the next, basketball will no longer be a journey fraught with trial-and-error, but an endeavor that is finally bearing fruit.

FSU senior Ian Miller enjoying career season Bob Ferrante FOX Sports JAN 14, 2014 10:52a ET TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Ian Miller is smiling and having fun. It beats the alternative, which was last season: hobbling and struggling. Miller fought through a frustrating junior season in which he battled a bone bruise on his foot. He missed six games, returning in time for the ACC schedule and could play -- but only if he didn't practice. And when he played, the results weren't great. Miller's foot was aching, and the pain affected his jumper. After resting his foot in the offseason, Miller is back to his old form. The senior scored 20 points and made 6 of 8 3-pointers in Sunday night's 85-61 win over Maryland in what was one of the best nights from the perimeter that a Florida State player has ever had. "Every night I feel like I can have a good night," Miller said. "My confidence is never lagging. (It) was one of those nights where I feel like they left me too open. My teammates just did a great job of getting me the ball in good spots. I just stuck my hand up and followed through and they were all money." Miller is enjoying a career season for Florida State, which is off to an 11-4 start and is 2-1 in the ACC heading into Wednesday's road game against Miami (9-6, 1-2 ACC). He has made 26 3-pointers, already surpassing his 2012-13 total of 24. He averages 13.9 points per game, more than doubling up his 5.3 average from last season. "You expect him to make shots," Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said. "He's a big-time player." But he's not your typical 3-point shooter: Miller also leads the team with 56 assists. Playing healthy again, Miller's minutes are of course way up, rising from 18.8 to a team-high 27.9. He now has 107 career 3-pointers and is just four away from 15th place on Florida State's all-time list. Miller is also doing it while coming off the bench in all 15 games. Florida State likes to start Devon Bookert at point guard and Montay Brandon at shooting guard, but Miller doesn't stay on the bench long. On Sunday night, he entered the game after being on the bench for the first 3:35. And 90 seconds later he had an assist and had knocked down his first 3-pointer. But this is what Miller prefers. He enjoys watching the defense and picking up on the flow of the game. When coach Leonard Hamilton calls on Miller, he's ready to go and often provides instant offense. It's certainly unconventional for the team's leading scorer to essentially be a sixth man -- and lead the team in minutes -- but it's tough to argue with the results.

"This rotation works for what we're trying to do," Hamilton said. "Sometimes it may not look quite as efficient on offense, but when you look at the big picture of a 40-minute game and what we have to do with the talent that we have, it works for who we are and what we're about." Florida State is as deep and athletic as any team in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season. The Seminoles have shown they hate to play the slow-it-down, grind-it-out pace and suffered a home loss to woeful Virginia on Jan. 4, a defeat that was a wake-up call. The Seminoles bounced back with a 15-point win at Clemson and then a 24-point rout of Maryland. Florida State loves to use its aggressive defense to create transition baskets. And even in the half-court offense, the Seminoles have the ability to score in the post or on the perimeter. On Sunday, Maryland tried to guard the post. And the Terrapins paid the price. Florida State made 16 three-pointers (Bookert and Aaron Thomas each added three 3s), setting a school record for the most shots made from beyond the arc in an ACC game. Oddly enough, the Seminoles were 16 of 24 from 3-point range and just 11 of 30 from inside the arc. Few ACC teams can defend the post and perimeter well. When forced to choose, what will Florida State's opponents do? Miller sees an opportunity each possession, knowing that Florida State will be patient as it looks for an open shot. "Any time we play unselfish, I think we're one of the better teams in the country," Miller said. "And I think we can play with any team in the country. When we make the extra pass, we really can be dominant."
